@_@ It just went on and on and on....
Anywho, here's a one shot for all yours enjoyment. Heh, now Rockman is on the other end of the reciving XD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rockman opened his eyes slowly and groaned. His head felt like someone had hit it repeatedly with a frying pan and his arms and legs felt like they weighed about 200 kilograms each. “Ow…” he said slowly.
“Morning,” Netto said in a thick voice. “You okay?”
Rockman forced himself to sit up. “Ugh, Netto-kun. Are you all right?”
Netto shook his head, “Obviously not,” he said and coughed. “This is the human equivalent of a virus.”
Rockman blinked. “You’re sick then?”
Netto nodded slowly. “Yeah, I felt it last night but I didn’t say anything cause I didn’t think it would be this bad. How’re you feeling?”
“Like I just sparred with Blues and lost,” Rockman admitted. “You sound horrible.”
“Gee, thanks,” Netto said dryly and sneezed.
Haruka came into their room and smiled at Rockman. “Oh, you’re up. Netto said that it would be best to let you sleep.”
“What time is it?” Rockman asked.
Haruka stuck a thermometer in Netto’s mouth, surprising the boy and turned around to smile at Rockman. “It’s about 9:45. This is the first time Netto’s been sick since you two got the link, isn’t it?” she asked.
Rockman nodded and sat down. “Yeah, I almost forgot humans could get sick too.”
Haruka frowned and took the thermometer out of Netto’s mouth and checked it. She sighed, “Yes well, viruses really don’t have any medication that make them go away. You boys are just going to have to sit this one out I’m afraid. And you’re not allowed to go anywhere, do I make myself clear?” she asked.
Netto nodded and lay back down, “As if I’d want to go anywhere,” he muttered.
Haruka sighed, “I doubt you’d make it a block with this fever, dear. It’s too soon to take more medicine so just try and get some more sleep, all right? We’ll see if you can handle any food later.”
Netto nodded and Haruka left the room. Rockman lay back down and took a deep breath, “At least I don’t sound funny,” he said with a smile.
Netto curled into his comforter, “Ha ha,” he said sarcastically.
Rockman felt him fall asleep not long after that and considering how bad he felt he decided that perhaps a nap was a good idea for him as well.
A few hours later Haruka came back into their room with a bowl of soup. She set it on the computer desk and gently woke Netto up. “You need to take more medicine,” she said softly.
Netto groaned and pushed his face into the pillow. “Already?”
“You’ve been asleep all morning,” Haruka said while continuing to shake him. “I promise to let you sleep once you eat and take the medicine.”
Netto sat up and coughed. “Right,” he said stuffily.
Rockman woke up too, not feeling much better for his two hour nap. “Ugh,” he groaned.
“Not much fun being sick, is it nii-san?” Netto asked wryly as he took the bowl that Haruka pressed into his hands.
Rockman stayed on his back, not trusting his balance if he got up. “I think this is one thing I’m happy I’ve lived without up unto this point.”
“You’ve no right to complain after the Neko Virus incident,” Netto growled at his navi while taking several sips of the soup.
Rockman looked up at the ceiling of his homepage. “That’s true,” he admitted.
Netto managed to finish half the bowl before handing it back to his mother. She sighed and looked into it, “Is that all?” she asked.
Rockman eyed Netto, “Not hungry?” he asked.
Netto made a face, “Not today.”
Haruka sighed and handed Netto a small cup filled with red syrup for his cough and fever. “All right then, take this and I’ll check back in later.”
Netto eyed it apprehensively. “What’s wrong?” Rockman asked.
“This stuff is disgusting,” he said.
“You’re not old enough to take the pills,” Haruka reminded him. “It’s still children’s medication for you.”
“I know,” Netto sighed. He eyed it one more time then drank the red liquid. “Yeck,” he said as he handed it back to his mom.
Haruka smiled and patted Netto on the head. “I know. It’s just for a few days, although if your fever doesn’t go down by this evening you’re not going to school tomorrow.”
Netto sighed, “Okay,” he said.
Haruka kissed her son on the forehead and gave Rockman a gentle smile before she walked out of their room.
“Almost rather be back in school, huh?” Rockman asked his twin with a small smile.
Netto nodded and lay back down, “I hate being sick. It’s boring for one, even more boring then school. Plus, I hate taking medicine.”
Rockman smiled, “Really, I couldn’t tell.”
Netto laughed into his pillow and coughed a little. “I try not to show it,” he said good naturedly.
Rockman sighed and curled up. “I hope you get better soon, Netto-kun. This is miserable.”
Netto snorted, “Like I said, you have no complaining rights.”
“When my head stops feeling like I just fell head first into a pool of stone cubes then you can tell me I have no complaining rights,” Rockman said sleepily.
“Touché,” Netto muttered and yawned. “I’m ready for another nap,” he said quietly.
Rockman didn’t reply because he was already fast asleep.
Netto grinned at his brother then turned around and went back to sleep himself.
~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~
Both of them slept through the night and well into the next day with a few interruptions from Haruka. As she promised she kept Netto from school the next day as well because his fever really didn’t go down as much as she would have liked.
In the afternoon Haruka left them to go grocery shopping after Netto and Rockman convinced her that they would be fine without her supervision for a few hours.
Netto was well enough the second day to be walking around his room and even playing a few video games to pass the time. After he was defeated for a third time on his current game he sighed in disgust and turned off the council.
“Bored?” Rockman asked as he went to go lie back down.
“Yes,” Netto muttered. “Very, extremely bored.”
Rockman sighed, “Well, my headache isn’t that bad,” he admitted. “But you still have your fever. Why isn’t it going down?” he asked.
“It’s a virus Rockman, medicine won’t kill it. I just get to take happy cold medicines until it goes away,” Netto groaned. “You never can really tell how long you’ll be sick when it’s this kind of thing.”
Rockman crossed his arms, “I know that.”
“At least it’s not going up,” Netto said as he pulled his covers over himself.
“This is true,” Rockman admitted.
Ten minutes later Netto’s PET rang loudly. Netto groaned and pulled his sheets over his head to ward out the intrusion on his eardrums. “Rockman, you get it,” he whined.
Rockman sighed and answered the call. “Yes?” he asked sleepily.
Manabe’s face came on screen. “There’s a new mission,” she said then peered at Rockman. “Are you all right?” she asked him.
Rockman shrugged, “Netto-kun’s a little sick and I’m dealing with it. Can’t you ask Enzan-san or Laika-san?”
Manabe frowned, “Actually, that’s what I called you about. Enzan-kun and Laika-kun are already on a mission but their communication was abruptly cut off fifteen minutes ago. It’s in a dimensional area so we can’t send our normal field agents for back up.”
Netto groaned and got out of bed. “Manabe-san, can’t you ask anyone else to go? Mama would kill us if we went out on our own.”
Manabe sighed, “Charlie is out of the country at the moment, Meiru-chan isn’t a listed member of the Net Saviors and even if she was we don’t have the time to look for rush. Tesla-san disappeared, Neiji is out of the city planning a fireworks show in Jawaii and your curry shop friends are there as well catering for that show so Dingo is out of the question. Jasmine is in Choina, Pride is in Creamland so that leaves you and Rockman. Boys, I’m sorry. I realized you were out of school today and yesterday so I knew something was up but I’ve exhausted all other options at the moment.”
Netto grabbed his clothes from his desk. “Netto-kun, where are you going?” Rockman asked.
“I’m getting changed,” Netto growled. “We can’t leave Laika and Enzan in danger like that.”
Rockman sighed as Netto left the room, “Mama’s going to kill us.”
“I’ll talk to your mother if need be,” Manabe sighed. “I’m so sorry Rockman. I really don’t want to do this.”
“Don’t be,” Rockman said with a pale faced grin. “If we heard something happened to them tomorrow that we could have helped with we would never forgive ourselves. It was just some bad circumstances that’s all. Besides, we’re feeling a lot better today.”
Manabe smiled at them, “All right. Are you sure you don’t want me to call your mother?”
Netto shook his head as he came back into the room, “No, she’ll get all worried about it and I don’t want to do that to her.”
Rockman nodded, “Yeah. We’ll take care of it, Manabe-san.”
Manabe sighed, “All right you two. As soon as you make contact with Enzan and Laika call me. All right?”
“You’re beginning to sound like mama,” Netto laughed as he tied his hair up.
Manabe shook her head, “I’m concerned. This is my last ditch effort. I’m afraid to take down the dimensional area because if Enzan-kun and Laika-kun need it then I’d be taking away their only defense.”
Netto nodded, “We know. Don’t worry, we’ll just be back up, I promise.”
“All right, I’ll be waiting for your call.”
Netto grinned and cut off the connection. “Let’s go, Rockman.”
“Right,” Rockman said as he linked into his PET.
~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~/~
Netto skated to the area that was surrounded by the dome. He leaned against a building and panted a little as he tried to catch his breath. “Netto-kun?” Rockman asked him worriedly.
“It’s all right,” Netto said as he went up the elevator of an adjacent building. “I’ll be fine.”
Rockman sighed, “I get a bad feeling about this.”
Netto stepped out onto the roof and looked at the bubble below him. “Not much I can do,” he said with a frown. “Laika, Searchman, Blues and Enzan need our help.”
Rockman nodded, “Right,” he said. “Let’s go.”
Netto nodded and jumped off the building, praying he had enough speed when he reached the surface of the dome. He slotted in the chip at the right moment and held his breath as he sunk into the dimensional area as if it was Jell-O. When he came out inside of it he quickly ignited the boosters on his jet pack and hovered in the air. “Quiet,” he said softly.
Rockman’s voice spoke into his ear. “We’re on borrowed time, Netto-kun. Your body won’t take the stress of cross fusion for long. And don’t battle if you can avoid it.”
Netto nodded and landed softly on his feet. “Right,” he said as he walked into the building.
Around him there were obvious signs of battle as well as several signs that Laika and Enzan may have gotten into trouble. Netto gulped nervously and walked further into the building where what little internet activity he could sense was coming from.
“Netto-kun?” Rockman asked.
Netto’s fingertips brushed a closed door. “Here,” he said.
Rockman nodded, “All right, can you get in quietly?”
Netto tried the door and realized it was locked. He typed in a simply override command into the pad next to it and the door clicked open silently. “They must not have expected back up,” he whispered as he went inside.
Once inside the room they got a good look around as a strange navi floated in mid air. Laika and Enzan were both unconscious and on the floor while the navi seemed to be searching for something in a desk nearby.
Remembering his promise to Manabe he sent her a quick e-mail explaining where he was and what was going on. Then he quietly made his way over to Laika and Enzan and shook them. “Hey, get up,” he said softly.
Enzan was the first to respond as he slowly came to his senses. “Huh?”
Laika groaned softly and pushed himself off the floor. “Ow,” he hissed.
The navi heard the disturbance behind him and whirled around. He eyed Netto and gave him a nasty grin, “Oh, backup, huh?” he sneered. He held out his hand and Netto watched in amazement as it formed into what looked like Searchman’s default gun. He fired it directly at Netto, who didn’t have enough time to get away and watched as he cried out and fell to the floor.
“N-netto-kun…” Rockman said quietly.
Netto took in several deep breaths, “Ow… I had no idea that attack hurt so much, Laika…” he said quietly and coughed.
Laika and Enzan stood up and quickly held up two shields to protect their friend from any more attacks. “What are you doing here?” Enzan hissed. “Rockman sent me an e-mail yesterday telling me you two were sick.”
“Manabe-san was worried about you and no one else could come,” Netto groaned as he sat up. “She was right too. What the hell happened?”
The navi growled and transformed its hand into what looked like Blues’ sword and ran in for close combat.
“Enzan, you take him,” Laika said. “I’m going to get Netto out of here.”
“What?” Netto asked.
Enzan nodded and summoned his own sword and jumped at the navi.
“Come on,” Laika growled as he helped Netto up.
“B-but, Enzan…” Netto protested.
“Come on!” Laika said more forcefully and pulled Netto out of the room.
“What in the hell is going on?” Netto growled.
“That navi’s name is Copyman,” Laika hissed. “He was looking for some kind of program housed in this building. He has copied all of the attacks of every navi he’s ever fought, and then some.”
“Oh,” Netto said softly.
Laika pulled Netto into another room and sighed, “Stay in here please. I know Manabe-san had no choice but to send you but you’re going to get seriously hurt if you try and fight someone like that while you’re sick.”
Netto sighed, “I know. I already promised Manabe-san I was only on backup.”
Laika gave him a brief smile before running back down the hall.
Netto sat on the couch, “This sucks,” he hissed.
Back in the room Enzan was parrying fairly well with each attack that Copyman was throwing at him. “You think after your first failure that you’ll win this time?”
Enzan grimaced as the swords met hilt to hilt. “I think I have a better chance,” he said with a cold grin as he forced Copyman back.
Copyman jumped back and summoned a buster. He fired it and it split into four separate shots, “Not this time!” he yelled.
Enzan cried out as two of the four shots hit him despite his best efforts to dodge. He fell to the ground and lay there.
Copyman went over and gloated over his fallen prey. “One down, two to go.”
Laika ran into the entrance of the room and eyed it. He quickly assessed the situation and pulled up his sniper. “Freeze bullet!” he yelled and fired it into Copyman.
The navi cried out before he was frozen solid. Enzan stood up and eyed the navi, “Sonic boom!” he yelled and fired the supersonic shockwave into the Copyroid navi.
The Copyroid that was housing the navi’s data blew up and destroyed all of the data inside of it. Enzan and Laika both gave small sighs of relief when the dimensional area disappeared.
Netto felt himself fall out of cross fusion as the dimensional area fell away. He sighed and sunk onto the couch as his navi’s strength left him. “Oh boy…” he groaned.
“Netto-kun?” Rockman asked.
“Hm?”
“Do you feel like you did yesterday by any chance?”
Netto groaned, “Yeah. You?”
Rockman laughed shortly, “I guess that’s what we get for our troubles.”
“Mama is going to kill us,” Netto sighed as he leaned back. “But I’d say it was worth it.”
“At least we agree on the outcome,” Rockman said softly.
Laika and Enzan came into the room and looked at Netto. “Are you awake?” Laika asked in a concerned voice.
Netto laughed and sat up. “Yeah, yeah. I’m awake.”
Enzan walked over to him and felt his forehead. His eyes widened as he looked at his flushed friend, “You’re really sick.”
“Thanks for clearing that up, Sherlock,” Netto muttered as he swatted Enzan’s hand away.
Enzan smiled and pulled his hand away, “Glad to see you’re no less tactful for it.”
Netto crossed his arms. “Whatever. Are you two okay?” he asked.
Laika nodded, “I think we’ll live. Can you walk?”
“I will if it kills me,” Netto growled.
As it turned out, a block and a half later, he couldn’t walk and the rest of his trip home was on Laika’s back, much to his embarrassment. However, his protests didn’t last long and soon he was fast asleep.
When they got into Netto’s house, a very unhappy Haruka was waiting for them. “Hello,” she said dryly.
Enzan bowed politely and Laika nodded. “Sorry,” Enzan said. “He was only helping us.”
Haruka walked over and felt his forehead, “His temperature is back up,” she sighed.
“He’s fell asleep about five minutes ago,” Laika told her.
Haruka nodded and led them inside. “May I ask what happened?”
“We were knocked out by a Copyroid inside a dimensional area and Netto came to help us. He didn’t fight at all and he was only hit by one attack so there shouldn’t be any damage from battle,” Enzan explained. “It’s just the energy he used to be in cross fusion.”
Haruka sighed and led them into his room where Laika laid him on his bed. She covered him up and put Rockman’s PET into its charger. “I know why they did what they did but I was still worried.” She smiled at them, “However that doesn’t change the fact that they helped you out. I’m not too upset but I wish they would have told me.”
“I don’t think they wanted to worry you,” Enzan said.
Haruka nodded, “I know. But sometimes I’d rather be worried then ignorant. I worry about all you kids, going on dangerous missions like that. I’m sure your parents worry as well.”
Laika and Enzan both frowned but didn’t say anything.
Haruka smiled at Enzan, “Your mother would, especially. I had the fortune to meet her at a fundraising ball for the science department quite a few years ago. She was a very sweet woman, Enzan-kun and I’m sure she would be proud.”
Enzan blushed and looked at the floor, “Thanks,” he murmured.
Haruka smiled, “Well, once Netto wakes up he and Rockman are going to have to start their bed rest all over again. Would you two like to stay for dinner?” she asked them.
Laika nodded, “I’d like to wait for him to wake up.”
Enzan nodded his consent as well and Haruka clapped her hands together. “All right then, I’ll get you two something to eat.”
Netto smiled into his pillow. Laika noticed and sat in his computer chair, “Your mother is an interesting woman.”
“Mama worries about everyone. She thinks we’re all kinda young to be doing this but she’s really supportive of it all the same,” Netto said without opening his eyes.
Enzan sighed and sat down in an extra chair. “You’re going to be in bed for at least another three days you know.”
“I’m aware,” Netto yawned. “I don’t care, as long as you two are all right.”
Laika and Enzan both smiled at him and Netto opened one eye and smiled back. “But don’t expect me to do it again any time soon.”
“We know,” Laika answered. “Go back to sleep.”
Netto nodded and closed his eyes once again and drifted off to sleep while his friends waited patiently next to him. _________________ Roses are #FF0000, violets are #0000FF. All my base are belong to you.
Cute. This is certainly quite longer than your usual vignettes, and for some reason, a lot more gratifying to read.
A lot of it incorporates many elements that you are known for doing well--elements of fluff, fairly decent combat scenes, good dialoigues...etc, and they all work in concert with each other quite well.
I'd suggest for this story to be an "introductory" story--since it's a fairly homogeneous sample of all of the styles of your writing, and it's a good sample to a reader who is just introduced to you as an author--it whets the appetite for much more. Great job. _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! But they'll have to avoid the Whammy, as they play the most exciting game of their lives!
