It would seem that rockman-exe.com has outgrown its current server, so it's been shut down temporarily. I'm currently working with my hoster to correct this problem, and I'll try to get the main site back online as soon as possible. If it means more money every month to shell out, then I'll do it. Please be patient in the meantime, I would appreciate it very much.
Thank you. _________________ "Cats are interesting. They're kind of like girls. When they come talk to you, it's great. When you go talk to them, it doesn't go so well." - Miyamoto

At worse, I must change my affiliates so it links to kishuku instead.

Saa, don't I know it. ;_; I've lost track of how many times I've had to move between hosters. I would rather work out a deal with my current one than have to move AGAIN. _________________ "Cats are interesting. They're kind of like girls. When they come talk to you, it's great. Hopefully, Ryouko, the site will return with most of the stuff in there still. I, hopefully, hope that it will return soon. _________________ "An unholy light is here again. Sorry to hear that, Ryou-sama...If there's anything we can do, don't hesitate to ask.

you have broadband internet right?
just host REO from your PC and you'll have enough space to host all you want. _________________

Easy to say, eh? Just consider the electricity bill, she's living with her parents, so the idea of having the computer on 24/7 may not appeal to them. :P _________________

My computer is not always online, either. We continually loose power in my house, so if I'm either sleeping or at work I'm not here to power my comp again.
Not to mention my internet is shared with two other computers in this house, so I only get a third of the bandwidth. _________________ "Cats are interesting. They're kind of like girls. When they come talk to you, it's great. When you go talk to them, it doesn't go so well." - Miyamoto

1: pc's don't use a ton of power
2: there is an option in the BIOS setup of your PC that automactaly turns it back on if power is lost and as for runing the webserver prog, you can just put it in the startup folder
3: just beacuse there are 3 pc pluged in at once doesn't mean that they are using it all the time _________________

Consider also that most webservers run on connections faster than T3+ (the correct name for which I can't remember) to provide the speed you regularly enjoy to multiple (from dozens up to thousands depending on the website) users simultaneously. Even on the very fastest home broadband, you don't get remotely near the speed that takes. I've been on pages hosted on someone's personal machine, and even on a pretty decent college ethernet off peak times, the speed was horrible. Remember also that no matter how fast your broadband downstream speed is, your upload is typically about a third of that speed, and that's the speed visitors would get.
To put it simply, it is just not technolgically practical at all to self-host unless you're a good sized company with loads of money to burn.
Ryouko, I'm really sorry to hear about your problems. I've had my share of trouble like this over the years, so I can totally relate. I hope this is resolved for you quickly and inexpensively! |

I was wondering what happened to the main REO page. I'm glad I finally found out... I was afraid it had gotten hacked or something. oO So sorry, Ryouko. Hopefully everything will turn out all right. _________________

I just heard back from my hoster, and we have agreed on a new hosting plan that is actually much better than the old one. :) We hope to have the site reinstated before the weekend is over. _________________ "Cats are interesting. I do this myself, and I even have a UPS (battery backup - keeps my computer, monitor, hub, and DSL modem up and running for 15-20 minutes... only cost just-over $100, too). It's a very effective way to save yourself from the hassle of web hosting fees.
However, it's not logistically possible for REO. If a professional server is having trouble keeping up with REO, a PC would likely keel over and die. Not to mention the fact that, on consumer-grade bandwidth, the site would become ungodly slow.... Ryouko's bandwidth would be totally drained, keeping her from ever using the internet. I only host some personal artwork, a tiny little homepage, and a forum of <20 members. Anything more is likely to kill your RAM and bandwidth. The only way Ryouko could host REO on her own would be to purchase a buisness-grade T1 LAN-line (or higher) and buy/build a new computer to act as a dedicated server... which would cost her a hellava lot more than what she'll be paying.
Personally, I believe the method to keeping REO afloat is some marketing and fundraising. If it were me in the same situation, I would place a Paypal button on the main page and possible start up a little eBay store - buying and selling games, toys, etc. That's a lot of work though - there's a reason why, for many webmasters of popular sites, their website is their full-time job. _________________
