Chapter Seven:

Mercury held up the burning Chaos Emerald and smirked. "Darkspell will forever hunt you," he muttered before disappearing in a flash of light.

A soft breeze wafted through the trees. The temperature warmed. Mercury the Hedgehog was gone. "They're gone...," Katya whispered. Seconds ago they had been in front of her...now there was nothing.

"I'm sorry," Neptune said softly, and she was: her eyes showed it.

"There's nothing to be done about it now. Just let them go for now," Tails added.

"How can you...this is all your fault! You and your stupid world!" Katya screamed, her eyes filling with hot tears.

"Stop. This isn't gonna help anything..."

"Oh, shut up Netto! This is all so dumb!" Katya pulled away from her friend and stepped back away from the group before turning and disappearing into the trees.

"Let her go," Sonic said as Netto started after her. "She needs time to cool off."

"So what now...," Netto asked wearily.

"Now...we collect the Chaos Emeralds," Neptune replied

"What good will that do?"

"It's the cloud's only..." Neptune paused, looked thoughtful.

"What, what is it," Tails asked.

"Mercury said...didn't you hear what he mumbled before disappearing?"

"So? What does Darkspell have to do with anything?" Netto asked hesitantly.

"It sounds like some sort of dark magic or somthing," Sonic said thoughtfully.

"I think it's a name." Neptune frowned. "But I'm not sure...it sounds oddly familiar."

Back at his lab, Tails worked on his latest invention with Neptune and Sonic. The Chaos Emerald Scouting Instrument (CESI), as Tails had dubbed it, would, once operational, efficiently track all of the Chaos Emeralds and make it easier for the team to find them. "I hope it works," Neptune said for the upteenth time. Tails sighed.

"We won't know until we get a Chaos Emerald. We have to show the machine what it's looking for."

"Well, we know where one of the Emeralds is," Sonic said in disgust.

"Teh...unfortunately, there's no way of getting it...for now." Tails pushed a panel into place on the machine and sat back, stretching his arms above his head. "It's done." CESI was a deep gray color and was little larger then a Chaos Emerald. There was a glass covering over a groove in the machine; the groove was the size and shape of a single Emerald.

"Great. How does it work then?" Sonic asked casually.

"Once we hook CESI up to the Tornado it'll be able to show us where the Chaos Emeralds are on the airplane's monitors," Neptune replied, carefully picking up the machine.

"But...like I said..."

"First we need a Chaos Emerald. No sweat, I have a feeling one of our good friends has one." Sonic grinned and the two foxes looked at each other tiredly. Once Sonic had his mind set on something, it was impossible to get him to focus of anything else. Tails looked around suddenly, puzzled.

"Hey, where's that Earth boy?"

"Stop yelling!" Netto said loudly. He and Katya were standing outside of Tails's lab; Katya had worked up the nerve to come back and face him again.

"If you were in your right mind, you'd be yelling too!" Katya sobbed.

"It won't help anything," Netto said for the tenth time. "Just stop it. If you really wanna help Cyclone then you'll help Sonic and Tails and all of them." Katya froze but the tears still flowed freely from her eyes. The color in them had changed from a chocolate brown to a shiny green flecked with bits of auburn.

"It's just that, sometimes it's easier to be mad then it is to let it go," she whispered after a moment and pulled Netto into a hug as an apology. Netto opened his mouth to say something when the door to the lab opened and Sonic came out, followed by Tails and Neptune who was holding a machine of some sort.

"Oh, there you are." Tails didn't sound surprised to find them and half smiled as the two humans quickly took a step away from each other.

"Are we gonna get this show on the road?" Sonic asked, already in one of the Tornado's seats.

"What's that?" Katya asked, not bothering to wipe her tears. She liked the feeling of the cold salty drops on her cheeks at the moment.

"CESI," Neptune replied.

"'Cessie?'" Netto asked, puzzled.

"No, C-E-S-I. It stands for Chaos Emerald Scouting Instrument and will help us find all seven easily," Tails explained patiently.

"If it works," Katya added, still feeling pessimistic and wanting to be difficult. Tails sighed, his patience evaporating into the night air.

"Tell your girlfriend to lighten up," Neptune said to Netto with a smile. Netto blushed crimson at the comment, but Neptune and the others chose to ignore it as they hooked CESI up to the Tornado. Katya did lighten up, although reluctantly. She couldn't stay upset, however, around machines, and began to admire Tails despite the part of her that refused to like anything about this place that they had been transported to through a power that was unknown to her world.

Wait...you and Razorblade are brothers? Cool!!! Now, about the fic...AWESOME. It was good to have some angst among the characters. And now they're setting out for the Chaos Emeralds. Makes me wonder what'll happen along the way. Well, good job as usual Cyclone!

Woah. Today is so totally a writing day...just like yesterday. Why? Cause. It's raining here. O_o

Chapter Eight:

Tails turned and faced Katya. "You know how to fly?" The girl blinked.

"Uhm...no...why are you-"

"Here, look, there are five of us and only three seats in the Tornado." Katya nodded.

"Well...yeah...so two of us are gonna have to stay behind."

"No...Sonic and Neptune can ride on the top of the plane."

"But..."

"Yeah, I seed a co-pilot." Katya's eyes brightened.

"Ohmygosh, I've always wanted to learn! Is it really...?" Tails nodded and Katya slid into Neptune's spot behind the pilot seat.

"Is it safe?" Netto asked, buckling his seatbelt. Katya stuck her tongue out at him.

"It was like teaching Neptune all over again."

"That bad?" Katya groaned. Neptune stuck her tongue out at Katya as she climbed onto the Tornado and stood behind the third seat. Sonic had already taken his position at the front of the plane.

"Okay, here we go."

"Are we there yet?" Netto asked for the third time.

"Neptune," Katya said sullenly, "smack him for me." Suddenly, a mass of dense clouds that had been hovering below the Tornado cleared and a titanic fort stood below them. The building was jagged black and ugly and it looked as dark as the aura it radiated. "Woah."

"Let's hope he's home so we don't have to come back later," Tails grumbled. Sonic grinned at the remark as the Tornado slowly came in for a landing near the ugly, foreboding building.

The group filed down the large hallway, looking around shiftily as if expecting something to jump out of the shadows at them. And, indeed, there were shadows everywhere. But, there was only one dark umbrage in particular that Sonic was looking for. "What're we looking for," Katya whispered, sidling closer to Netto. "I mean, I know it's a Chaos...Emerald..." The group stopped, Sonic a few feet ahead of the rest of them.

"So we meet again Sonic the Hedgehog." The speaker was a black hedgehog with red markings on his arms, legs, quills, and around his eyes, which were also a blood red. His shoes were black and red and white with some golden yellow parts on the bottoms and his gloves white with black and red around the wrists. "What are you doing in the Dr.'s base?"

"Maybe we just wanted to say hi...Shadow," Sonic said casually, although it was obvious he was ready to fight if there was a need.

"I doubt you wanted to exchange greetings with us," Shadow replied stubbornly, his eyes narrowing.

"Alright...you've got us." Sonic sighed, although keeping a smug smile on his face. "We came to say hi...and get a Chaos Emerald." Shadow let a smirk run across his face.

"A Chaos Emerald. What makes you think we would have a Chaos Emerald?"

"You always have a Chaos Emerald Shadow, am I right? The only way we've ever gotten all seven in the past is by taking at least one from you." Shadow's smirk dissipated and he scowled.

"You don't think I will hand it over willingly." Shadow opened one of his clenched fists and a ruby red Chaos Emerald shimmered in his palm.

"No, I didn't think so."

"Is Sonic gonna fight him?" Katya whispered. "Coolness!" Tails gave her a stern look.

"Not coolness if you're standing next to the fight." Katya swallowed.

"Well..."

"Look out!" Neptune and Netto pulled Tails and Katya down just as Sonic went flying over their heads and slammed into a wall behind them.

"Holy shat," Katya coughed, waving the smoke and debris from the wall away from her face.

"You can say that again." Netto pulled her up. "C'mon, Neptune and Tails are already halfway out of here."

"Holy shat..."

Another great chapter. I cannot wait to see Sonic and Shadow battle it out (They do, right?). The next chapter should be awesome. I'm a huge fan of Shadow the Hedgehog.

Ho Kay, I'm so sorry about the wait...but you know how writer's block goes so well with being busy...yeah...no more excuses now...writing. Here's the next chapter.

Sonic picked himself up off of the ground and dodged another of Shadow's strong kicks. The black hedgehog was using Chaos Control to move as fast as he, and Sonic always found it a challenge to beat this opponent. He liked the challenge. "Let's take this outside," Shadow said shortly before disappearing after another chunk was taken out of the black walls of the fortress. Sonic shrugged and followed him.

Tails and Neptune had taken Katya and Netto to an isolated area of forest not far from the large dark building where Shadow and Sonic battled. "Don't move," Tails said as he and Neptune turned to move closer to the base as to monitor the fight between Shadow and Sonic. Katya glared at the fox, never liking anyone to tell her what to do.

"Why are you going closer then? As I recall...you were the one who said, and I quote, "not coolness if you're standing next to the fight." She mimicked Tails's voice and Netto held back a laugh. The orange fox chose to say anything to that and disappeared among the trees after Neptune. Katya let out a sigh and sat on a rock next to Netto. "Great. This is fun."

A soft noise like that of an explosion sounded not far away. Seconds later, another rose in the air. Smoke billowed in the trees. "That doesn't sound good," Netto commented, standing up and peering into the dense vegetation. Another boom, this time louder. The ground shook and Katya pushed herself to her feet.

"Okay, are we allowed to move yet?" she asked as the noise moved closer to where they were standing and two figures advanced toward them, leaping among the treetops.

"I dunno, but let's!" Netto grabbed Katya's hand and they took off away from the two hedgehogs. The words 'Chaos Control' rang out through the woods and the shaking of the ground nearly threw them off balance as they ran.

"I think there was a crimp in Tails's plan to just leave us here without a clue," Katya muttered.

Behind the two humans, Sonic had managed to garb hold of the Chaos Emerald and wrestled with Shadow as he struggled to teleport out of the blue hedgehog's grasp. With a smirk, Shadow disappeared and reappeared a few feet away from Sonic, in front of Katya and Netto. The two teens stopped in their tracks, confused.

Netto saw Sonic coming up behind Shadow and thought fast, using his random randomness to come up with a distraction. "Woah, that was cool! Can you show me how to do that?!" Shadow hesitated and Sonic leapt on him, wrenching the Emerald form his grasp before the hedgehog could react.

Tails and Neptune flew the Tornado by, picking up Sonic, and Netto and Katya grabbed a rope ladder, which was hanging from the plane clumsily and clamored aboard. "I'm never doing that again," Katya muttered as she slid into her seat. She looked down at the ground and shivered. "I hate heights, hate them hate them...hate them..." Netto snorted and Katya reached back to slap him.

"This isn't over Sonic. You haven't seen the last of Shadow the Hedgehog yet." The black hedgehog stood poised on the tip of the black jagged tower, staring into the distance as the Tornado flew out of sight. "You will have to come back if you want to know about what lies in the darkness." he smirked, red eyes gleaming. "My part in this story is far from over."

Yea, yea, short and stuff...but hey, I'm getting back into it.
