Oh wow.

This was actualy quite a thrilling chapter, even if there was little to no combat in it. As always, there are good ideas in there about what the distinction between light and dark are, and how each side deals with Netto, and perceives him. The charcterization is excellently done, and...the ending is abrupt as always. Great work.

Dark Rockman looked around but saw nothing but light around him. “What!?” he managed to gasp out as his voice echoed eerily around him.

Rockman appeared in front of him. Or rather, Saito appeared, even though the dark half knew who it was. “Hello,” he said kindly.

“What are you doing!” he hissed. “What is this?”

“I’m just trying to get you to see the light,” he said softly. “Dark Rockman, we’re not separate, I am you and you are me, just like Netto-kun co-exists with his dark half we’re going to have to do the same.”

“Never!” Dark Rockman snarled. “I will never be with you again!”

“Why? What’s so frightening about being whole?” Saito asked him.

“I am whole!” the navi snapped back. “I’m fine and once I have Netto-kun with me I will be that much stronger! I don’t need anyone…”

“You don’t need anyone but you want Netto-kun,” Saito said softly. “Isn’t that a bit contradictory?”

“SHUT UP!” the navi bellowed.

Saito’s gaze remained impassive. “Please, stop this. Netto-kun is getting worried.”

“He’s worried?” Dark Rockman asked.

Saito nodded, “He is. About both of us. He knows who you are, Dark Rockman. I do too. You’re not the misunderstood navi you seem to think you are.”

Dark Rockman’s red eyes widened. “What? No,” he shut his eyes tightly. “No, no, no! I don’t believe you. I’m Dark Rockman, the strongest navi. I don’t need you, I don’t need anyone. Not… I…” he took in a deep breath. “Netto-kun…”

“You care about him, don’t you?” Saito asked him gently.

Dark Rockman looked at Saito, startled. “I…” his red eyes wavered with an emotion that he technically should not have had. “Yes,” he whispered.

“Then let’s go back. Just go back to being with me and we can return to Netto-kun together,” Saito told him with a tiny smile. He extended his hand, “Come on.”

Dark Rockman looked at it, then let a shadow fall over his face. “Never,” he hissed.

Saito looked on sadly.

“NEVER!” Dark Rockman snapped. “I will never go back to you! Never!”

“Aren’t you lonely?” Saito asked him.

Dark Rockman stopped dead and stared at Saito, his mouth slightly open. “What?” he asked, obviously startled.

“Aren’t you lonely?” Saito asked him again. “Don’t you miss being with me and Netto-kun? Even if you weren’t what you wanted to be, weren’t you happier when you were a part of me?”

Dark Rockman closed his mouth and shut his eyes. “I…”

Saito nodded kindly and walked over to the navi. “I know you are hurting. I can feel it.”

“You can?” Dark Rockman mumbled.

“I can, and Netto-kun can. We know you’re in pain, Dark Rockman,” Saito held out his hand and smiled at him. “This isn’t any way for someone to live.”

Dark Rockman looked back at him and frowned. “Why? Why give me a second chance like this? What did I do to deserve your pity?”

“I’m not pitying you,” Saito told him kindly. “I just feel sorry for you. I know you’re in pain and I know you’re lonely. I know you want to be strong but… maybe its better this way,” he said while moving his hand a little. “That way we both can protect Netto-kun.”

Dark Rockman looked at Saito’s hand. “Protect?”

“That’s what we’re meant to do, isn’t it? All those crazy ideas about getting Netto-kun to be with you. In some off handed way you were just trying to keep him safe, weren’t you?” Saito asked.

Dark Rockman let a smirk play on his lips. “The world’s a dangerous place, Rockman.”

Rockman nodded, a tiny glimmer of sadness in his hazel eyes. “I know. But we’ll do what we can now.”

Dark Rockman nodded and took Saito’s hand. “All right. But don’t think this means I’ll disappear.”

Saito nodded as Dark Rockman’s data dissipated around him, “I know.”

When the light faded Rockman stood in the center of the room with his icon pulsating. Netto ran over and held up his weakened navi. “He’s back,” Rockman murmured.

“I know,” Netto replied.

“Everything… should be fine now,” Rockman said with a small smile on his face. “Thanks for your support, Netto-kun.”

Netto smiled, “Any time,” he replied and held up his PET as Rockman logged back into it. Then slowly he turned his back on Dark Rockman’s sanctuary for the last time.

And it was a joy to read it, again.

It's great how you have Dark Rock portrayed here and how he reacts to a seemingly paradoxical situation. He wants to be with Netto ultimately, but he cannot do so without going back as part of Saito.

This was quite an engaging read.

Quite a nice ending. You wrapped it up well.
