Nethack. It takes a bit to figure out the controls, but it's pretty fun and there's all sorts of crazy stuff you can do.

If you have no life, or a LOT of spare time.

Ragnarok Online.

There.

Trackmania Nations, free. Offers an awesome singleplayer mode, LAN multiplayer, Internet multiplayer and a track editor.

Be aware that while this is a free game and doesn't need to be burned to a CD, it does include StarForce. (So you need a removal tool after deinstallation if you want to get rid of it)

There's also The Kingdom of Loathing:

And Runescape, I guess:

http://www.runescape.com/

I suggest KoL more than RS, though. Sure, there are limits to how many 'adventures' you can do in a day, but that's better than losing almost all of your items when you die on RS. -.-

A note of clarification about KoL:

It's an MMORPG, since it seems that the topic title implies you want a game you can download. Browser-based, so it requires no download. Alternately to the link posted above, you can also use the link in my signature.

P.S.--Haly K--if you do play, send me your player ID and I can get you in our clan.

my friend has Trackmania... Sunrise, i believe. those are interesting games.

if you looked hard enough, you could find games that are flash versions of NES games. i found a Duck Hunt one once. there was also a VERY addicting game at that site. you had to pilot a helicopter with your mouse and you had to see how far you could get it without crashing.

Rodent's Revenge. I used to play that all the time when I was a little kid.

Or you could just go to BYOND, download Dream Seeker and some games to go with it.

NES flash games are pretty cool. I liked Kung Fu Remix, made by Ironclaw.
