Here's a great question:
Is it more important for you to choose your favorites, or do you just pick the strongest, most generic?
I like to cover all types, so I like pokemon with certain coverage and great diversity. Skarmory, Heracross, Swampert.... My favorite out of that is only Swampert, though.
Then I choose my favorites... some are good at kinda annoying people. My favorite pokemon Gardevoir, has recently become OU. Now the reason I like Gardevoir is not because it has anything to do with how great it is... I like Gardevoir because Ralts is always the FIRST pokemon I catch. and it ALWAYS comes up with a Maxed IV for SP ATT.... but it always has a nature that kinda detears from it's full potential. I usually end up with Brave or Serious or something like that... I know, HAX right? Apparently the game just likes giving them to me... I love it... yet I can't breed them.
Anyways, My other Favorites like Espeon and Vaporeon I don't use in a competitive team all the time since I like type coverage. But I do have a good battle with them.
So here's the question... Favorites? or The same as everyone else... or do you have a reason? _________________ http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?ref=profile&id=100000142872316

Oh, I always try and go with a mixture of the two. On the one hand, Marshstomp, Salamence, Metagross, etc, all have awesome stats, especially the latter two, while they are also my favourite pokemon. Could be just that they are my favourites simply because they are strong... but I'm just like that way. _________________

My favorite pokemon are the ones with hidden potential, like Umbreon and Crobat. But I also love the power of Metagross and Blaziken! I personally think that If you have a favorite, even if it's weak, you can train it to be stronger. The only exception to this is Ditto. It will always be a pink blob of mock-usefullness (although I love to use the Jello-mold! Great for getting Eevees!). I saw a wicked Smeargle, and a HAXing Dusclops the other day, and I'd thought they were dead to me. Learn something new every day, eh? _________________

Oh, brute-force, much like in EXE or ANY other game, is defintely not the only way to win. Take the Pokemon you just mentioned: Dusclops has insane defense stats, special defense, to be more specific.
Meanwhile, Crobat has high speed, and can learn extremely annoying moves like Confusion Ray which has an accuracy of 100, which combined with its high speed and other moves like Toxic, Protect and Charm can create an extremely annoying Pokemon, which, unsurprisingly, is named an 'annoyer'.
Umbreon is somewhat underused but can be VERY deadly because it can learn the insane two-part combo Mean Look/Baton Pass, which will make the opposing Pokemon unable to switch out while you switch out your Umberon with a Pokemon that counters the opposing one's element, hopefully with a STABed move, that will wipe 'em out quite quickly, in most cases. /o/ _________________

I usually win all my battles using brute force but rarely use special attacks. _________________ Guernsey Adams Pierre

NJ's right. Brute force will rarely win you a battle against a serious player. Take the following moveset for Umbreon:
Umbreon @ Leftovers:
Mean Look
Swagger OR Confuse Ray
Double Team
Moonlight OR Wish
EVs:
HP: Maxed
Defense: Around 140
Special Defense: Around 115
This is what I like to call the "Mental Waster" set. The strategy is simple enough to get down: Trap the enemy, confuse the hell out of them and use Double Team to dodge. If it starts taking heavy damage, use your selected healing move to restore that nice, fat HP bar along with your Leftovers.
Advantages: This strategy works with Umbreon's naturally high defenses and can put a huge dent in a large number of enemies, if not stop them completely. Umbreon's got the HP to take a boosted physical hit, unless it's coming from something like Slaking, but in that case, it's best just to swap out anyway, the same goes for Fighting-Types and any Pokemon with the "Own Tempo" ability.
Disadvantages: Swagger's my preferred confusion attack, since you can get it from Emerald's Battle Frontier Move Tutors, but I can see Confuse Ray being more commonly used, not just because it's easier to get, but because it has better accuracy. Like I said before, Umbreon's weak against Fighting-types, and this set will fail against anything like Spinda that has the confusion-preventing Own Tempo power. _________________

Hmmmmmmm. Maybe I should consider that. So should I stick with specific types of Pokemon or should I be versatile with all types? _________________ Guernsey Adams Pierre

I think to get Lugia, you're supposed to beat all the gyms in Johto, get a Silver Wing, go to the Whirl Islands and explore the caves to find Lugia but I haven't played in a while so you might want to go to www.gamefaqs.com or any Pokemon fansite. |
i mean for the emerald/ruby/sapphire version _________________

Azure: How about the following moveset:
Mean Look
Confuse Ray
Baton Pass
Moonlight/Wish
With that deadly combo I mentioned earlier, the opposing Pokémon will be both confused and unable to switch out, making a (hopefully) easy target to faint.
Magicman DX: I'm fairly sure that you can't get it in either Ruby/Saph without importing it. Not sure about Emerald, though. _________________

You can get Ho-Oh and Lugia on the GBA Games. On FR LG and E.
You need to get a Mystic Ticket from a special event. Or you could do it the easy way and obtain them through Colloseum and XD: GoD
In battle I tend to rely on my Espeon and Venusaur. Espeon makes an awesome Special Sweeper. With a special attack of 310 it's the strongest member of my team.
Venusaur generally is an all rounder. It has a good defense and a high HP. _________________ ~Come to Spriting Haven~ |

NJ, I personally disapprove of the Baton Passer set, since if Umbreon winds up being your last Pokemon in play, it will become totally useless, and with Umbreon's great defensive powers, it's more than likely to outlast most other possible team members. But like I said, it's a preference and the fact that I like to be prepared for most types of situations.
A better strategy would be to have a more suitable Baton Passer like Mawile(Who can at least fight back with something like Seismic Toss or Ancientpower) on your team. Have Mawile use Iron Defense, then Baton Pass into Umbreon, with Iron Defense, Umbreon's defenses would then become that much more absolute. Then annoy and tank away with Confuse Ray/Swagger.
Another strategy is to abandon all hopes of dodging a hit and go with Toxic over Double Team. Mean Look + Confusion + Toxic will make your enemies not very happy. Then you can use Moonlight/Wish to recover any damage you take. Of course, without Double Team, I would use Confuse Ray over Swagger. :puku: _________________

Well then. So we would have:
Mawile
Ancientpower
Iron Defense
Confuse Ray
[Filler Move]
Umbreon
Confuse Ray
Mean Look
Toxic
Wish (I find this a mite stronger IMO)
But if you're looking into SPECIAL defense and don't mind using legendaries, go for Regice. _________________

I usually will use anything that's allowed in the Battle Frontier, so yes, Regice would be acceptable, especially since he's awesome at special walling, which is what he was made for.
Now then, here's a basicly workable set for your average Mawile.
Mawile @ Brightpowder
Ancientpower/Seismic Toss/Rock Slide
Iron Defense/Swords Dance
Toxic/Confuse Ray/Poison Fang
Baton Pass
EVs:
HP: Maxed
Defense: Around 120
Special Defense: Around 135
Mawile is another Pokemon with decent HP and Baton Pass, however, unlike Umbreon, it's defenses aren't the best, and it will be forced to rely on it's beefy, yet still not quite perfect, physical Attack stat. Thus, it is best suited for Baton Passing. Use your boosting move of choice, slap the enemy with a status condition, and Baton Pass to something that can get the job done better. If Mawile becomes the last Pokemon on your team, it can at least go down fighting with the selected attacking move. Each one has it's pros and cons. Seismic Toss' controlled damage is always good, especially if your Mawile is level 100. Ancientpower is a bit weak, but you have that 30% chance of raising all your stats in one go, which would help Mawile to survive a bit longer, and Rock Slide is more powerful, but a bit less accurate than Ancientpower. With this set, it's really up to you to decide what's best. Both of the rock-type moves will benefit from Brightpowder's effect, and make it harder for foes to hit you, thusly making a good set up for the likes of Umbreon.
Advantages: Makes a great annoyer, and combo play with Umbreon is awesome if you use either annoyer move. The attack stat is serviciable, and if you choose Swords Dance as your booster move, you can generally faint any non-resistant foe in little time.
Drawbacks: Like I said, Mawile's defenses aren't the best, it will most likely go down from anything strong against it's type in one or two shots without some appropriate stat boosting, that is, if you get the chance to stat boost. The rock-type moves will fail against any Rock, Steel or Grass-type, in which case, you're meat. Toxic will fail against Poison and Steel types, as well as anything like Zangoose or Snorelax that has the Immunity trait, which blocks Poisoning. _________________

Ahh, here's something I can really cover.
When I was younger I used to use Pokemon for strength, and never used defensive moves. But nowadays I choose Pokemon because I like them. My Emerald team had a Minun, and my Gold had a Sneasel. This is proof enough. XD
How I judge favourites are by look/behavoir and how they opperate. I'll use a stereotypically strong Pokemon if I really like it, but I'd never use one just because it's strong nowadays. xD _________________ deviantART / Live Journal / Yaoi Gallery |

My choices leaned mostly in Jean's direction as well when I was younger - nowdays, I pick what would most objectively be the strongest, and in particular, pick my moveset very carefully. However, I have a tendency to lean towards sweepers.
Oh, and yes, that's your average Mawile there I guess, Azure. My personal choices would be to pick Ancientpower/Iron Defense/Confuse Ray. _________________

Oh, favorites, without a doubt. I try and fit Charizard and Sandslash on all of my regular teams, even the ones that aren't feasibly strong enough to win competitively. And I can't help but mention the lizard team I've made with Charizard, Feraligatr and Sceptile.
As for movesets, I always try and have STAB moves, filling out the rest of the movelist with moves that help protect the pokemon against types it's weak against, or support moves. _________________ Stuck In The Middle With You; a Metroid and Halo crossover
