The one where James had....a bikini? Laughing It was banned in the US, and for good reason too. So I never watched it.

Um...Jean... Pokemon IS a kids show >_> I know you like it... but... seriously. The only reason why they edited it was because thats the way 4Kids works.

Infact, Pokemon is about friendship and happiness and winning and evil gangs and overcoming impossible odds with a Gameshark'd Pikachu. No really... it is. That's geared towards kids in my book. <_<;

SD Gundam and Hamtaro had different companies do the dubbing, whose approach wasn't to redo everything... (Bandai and Shopro respectively) and their broadcasting company's standards were more lenient with them.

So they dubbed an anime that was for kids...(yes it is) and if they didn't... I wouldn't be buying their video games still because I wouldn't have seen it as a kid, now would I? >_>

Pokemon is actualy a safer show then most. Just that one episode at the beach and that's really the biggest problem.

And the Porygon episode and the Safari Zone episode, which had a gun in it.

And the fact that every episode with Jynx is banned in America due to it being a stereotype.

But other than all of that, yeah.

My POINT is that they should only be dubbing anime that are indeed for kids. Pokemon isn't for our little kids, there's tons of things in it that aren't acceptable and have been edited out. But since Japan has different standards.. and many 18+ people watch that show anyway, so..

Pokemon is completely for kids. The entire show could air uncut here if it had been dubbed by a different company. Let's not kid ourselves--what really is there to edit in Pokemon?

Also, in Japan, anime in general is something kids watch. They just don't have as strict editing standards.

In other words, they don't have a FCC. Lucky them. I don't like the FCC.

Not exactly. Some anime really need to be edited to air on TV, no matter what timeslot it airs. For example, Gantz was completely edited on TV while airing at a late-night timeslot. But on the DVDs, it aired uncut with more violence and nudity.

Exactly. The FCC takes out anything 'bad' that the 'public'(as in little kids) could see, even if it's at 3 in the morning or something. Why would little kids even watch TV then?

BTW, what is Gantz?

A show targeted to adults. The manga is in Young Jump in Japan. Despite it being in a magazine called "Young Jump", nothing in this show is even remotely for kids.

Really, the biggest property I've had a problem with is One Piece. It's 4Kids' best title, but it's seriously the most edited dub they've ever done. 32 episodes were cut out of the show thus far (Mind you, only around 6 of the episodes cut were filler), the characters mostly have terrible voices (or re-used ones from older characters), the amazing BGM was completely destroyed, and any of emotion that was supposed to be conveyed across to the viewer has been taken out.

The funny part of One Piece is that in a Shonen Jump interview with one of the voice actors (guy who does Zolo in the dub), he said the Japanese cast said what they wanted their character's dub voices to sound like and picked out the actors themselves. Now... If the original voice actors think these are really good people they picked out... why is everyone in the US still complaining?

Infact, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the method of how most popular anime is approached. I wouldn't be surprised if they did this method with shows like Pokemon, Inuyasha, or Naruto and other popular shows to come, such as Bleach.

The guy who does Zoro's voice is actually pretty good. However, they only picked the voices of the main cast and there was a limited amount of range. Sanji's voice is absolutely terrible. He sounds like he has a cold. Luffy's voice actress has the right range, but she can't make him sound cool enough or funny enough. Plus, she has this stupid catchphrase laugh that's really annoying.

The worst choice in a voice of all has to be Vivi. Her actress is seemingly not capable of showing any emotion whatsoever. Literally, Vivi's voice actress stays in the same voice range for every line. It's like she's reading monotone, and this is a huge problem. Vivi has the most emotional parts in this entire arc, and they chose the worst actress to do the job so far.

One Piece people are still complaining for several reasons.
1. No uncut DVDs. If there were uncut DVDs, I doubt anyone would care as much.

2. 32 total episodes were cut out of the series, with only six of the episodes being filler. One of these was a major arc that introduced a new character and important plot points.

3. All of the music has been replaced with generic synthesizer crap. Every song in the original version was catchy, and each person had their own theme song. In the dub, you can't tell a song from another. They sort of just blend into the next one.

4. All emotional moments are removed, along with nearly all instances of death to make it more dramatic. The climaxes of One Piece arcs all involve a huge tension point and then a huge climax. With The Arlong Park arc, they obviously had to remove Nami continuously stabbing herself in the arm with the knife, but they completely removed the part where Luffy's in the room she spent her entire life, trying to keep everyone alive and going through hell doing so. Luffy didn't hear her life story, but just seeing this is enough for him to understand. At the risk of his own life, he begins destroying the room that she was enslaved in while his opponent is trying to kill him. They removed the sacrifice Bellemere made for her kids, and completely covered up her death. Even after the arc, they didn't bother to show the episodes that resolved the whole thing and showed what the village did afterwards.

5. The dub isn't even decent. For a 4Kids dub, it's completely below par. Pokemon is handled better. Even Yu-Gi-Oh hasn't had 32 episodes cut out of the series. Every word in the series is pretty much painted over, even though the signs in One Piece are generally all in English. If you were a fan and heard the voice differences, you would understand really well how badly the changes were. I went into One Piece knowing the dub was butchered and not seeing it for myself. But when I was able to see the Japanese version, it came into full effect.

Can you honestly say that any other 4Kids property is edited worse? There's absolutely none that are.

When Marc Diraison said that, he probably just meant that they chose the VAs to play the characters that were there in the very beginning, like Luffy, Zoro and Nami, which would explain Sanji's pick for instance...however, I find it pretty hard to believe that 4Kids would even give half of a $#!+ to listen to what the original Japanese voice actors would be asking for >>

Also, while all of those things are prettymuch on the mark, Toto, one thing I can say now is that the dub is SLOWLY starting to pick up again. In fact, the Drum Island saga had NO episodes skipped, and they didn't even take out Dr. Hiruluk's suicidal end. Also, from what we've been able to tell by all of the new episode titles, they won't be skipping any episodes in the Alabasta saga from what I can see. Also, despite all of the edits and changes, One Piece is actually one of 4Kids' more violent shows comparitively speaking.

It is more violent than their other shows, that's true. But a lot of the edits are unnecessary and come across as pointless. Changing 'Marines' to 'Navy'? 'Ace' to 'Trace'? 'Cobra' to 'Nebra'? What was the entire point of those name changes? Aside from that, why do they refuse to put out any uncut DVDs for the show? It's the only Shonen Jump property that hasn't had at least one volume available uncut.

Mentioning Hiruluk's end, they completely made it oblivious as to what happened to him. I didn't even know what went on--it seemed like he just vanished into thin air and his hat was left behind. They erased the explosion, took out the sound of it, removed the smoke left behind, and the only thing left is this crater that doesn't make one bit of sense. Same thing with Bellemere. Arlong locked her up in a dungeon in the dub, and they never mention it again. There's nothing to indicate exactly what happened to her, and why no one went to save her if she was in the dungeon.

It's a good thing that no more episodes are being skipped--this is true. However, the writing is still terrible and the voices just aren't good. Can anyone say that the puns are remotely good? The actors aren't being directed well-enough, and if what this guy says is true, they just don't give a damn. There shouldn't be any doubt that this is the worst dub that 4Kids has ever done, if not one of the worst dubs ever created.
