It's gonna stay in the same double-case as my DS Japanese-English/English-Japanese Dictionary ^_^

If you have a DS and want to learn some Japanese, I suggest you get the second one. The Kanji dict's not coming out till March 30, anyways

Geez. You can't learn Japanese unless you have a decent teacher. My Japanese teacher is fairly competant but she has weird rules and ways of teaching. Her page on ratemyteacher.com is full of negatives.

I am only in my second year and I know there's a whole lot more I have to learn to even understand a little bit of manga. Yes, that's right, manga. If you can't understand manga, what makes you think you'll be able to understand anime that talks at a high speed? It's also unlikely that you would get a hold of the script. Even so, I am fairly certain there is no furigana to help pronounce kanji, much less understand it. Of course, you can always get a kanji dictionary, but it's fairly useless if you don't even know how it's prounounced. I think few dictionaries have stroke order, but then it's hard to distinguish how many strokes a kanji has.

ANd let's not forget street dialouge. Even if you do get a proper education, anime, manga, and games are more than likely going to use Japanese slang. Most of what you learn in a Japanese class is polite. A few people or things will use the more polite, formal speech, but just a few. The kids and teens will most likely use street language. It's hard to understand phrases from a different country. I doubt you'll be able to find the slang term for more *ahem* inappropriate words in a Japanese dictionary.

And then there's forms of words and sentence structures. It took me a while to get used to the present tense form (ending with て or で) of verbs. You can learn the patterns and rules, but it's still hard. There's several different sentence structures and particles. Half of the time, the same kana is used for different particles and it's hard to remember which is which. And with particles, there's also different prounciation.

So overall, to summarize what I just said for those of you who don't bother reading posts that have obviously had effort poured into it....

Japanese isn't something you can learn from dictionaries and online guides. You need much more guidance to learn any language. At birth, your parents are the one who teachers you how to speak, you have teachers who teach you how to perfect that language and other teachers to show you how to learn other languages.

Edit: Oh yeah... WHY is this even in the anime section? O_o

I have to echo what Malik says here. Learning ANY language is impossible if you just want to learn it from a dictionary. Sure you may get a large or somewhat decent vocabulary, but that tells you nothing about syntax or grammar. What good are words if you cannot string them together to make intelligible sentences or phrases?

With many Asian languages, this problem is compounded by the fact that there is no alphabet. Each word has a discrete character or set of characters assigned to it, so there really is no way to look at a character and discern how to say it if you don't know it. Language, on the whole, is an acquired skill that requires a lot of practice as well as rote memorization. Getting a translator will, at most, teach you the pseudo-language. It's not real unless you use it on a constant basis or learn all about it, not just words.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with wanting to learn Japanese to help understand Anime, if you learn more about the Culture and like other things about Japan on the way. Everyone has a reason for starting anything, so it's hardly fair to judge someone else's as childish or silly.

I learn Japanese and Chinese because I like the history and culture, being able to understand Japanese Cartoons and Video Games will just be an added bonus.

Oh and having a friend who speaks Japanese at home really helps, because you have not only someone who can teach you new words or phrases, but also someone to help correct pronunciation and intonation. Anyone can wrote learn, but learning to speak a language fluently is an art.

They do say that translating Japanese is more of an art than science. =P

The Japanese dictionary may not teach me enough to know the Japanese language fluently, but it was the Japanese dictionary that taught me how to read hiragana and katakana when I did an attempt on translating Forte's side stories. =P I also recognize a few kanji (like light, disappear, fight, heart, etc.), and I recognize a few words and phrases in anime or spoken (when I was visiting Japan). But that's about all I know about the Japanese language.

I would like to learn it, and I had wanted to learn it for a while now, not just for knowing anime and manga, but I thought it's interesting and fun to write, and to say. I also had a dream of making my own manga and living in Japan when I graduate from college (*laughs* like that'll ever happen XD).

left-right thing -> yeah, you got it ri-- er, correctly.
When written vertically, Japanese text reads from right to left.

The [to pieces] thing's optional.
Tear to pieces and tear apart translates the same way into Japanese. Reversing the translation is a matter of guesswork and experience.
