Oh dear. I could bet five dollars Netto's mom is going to get a heart attack after this. XP

It's either that or she'll faint from shock.

...
I am going to go to your house, tie you up in your computer chair, and hold a watergun to your head to MAKE SURE the next flippin' story you update is THIS ONE. Good GRAVY woman! You and your cliff hangers!
Well, not so much cliff hangers as... hm. Bah, you know what I mean. Seriously though, I am very happy they went back to see Haruka. Netto's death (like you said) probably hit her worst, and keeping the news from her, even to keep Netto safe, is... would be plain cruel! Horrible! Yucky! I was going to grumble at you if you did that, so I'm veeeery happy you're telling her.
I find it interesting that Netto looks and acts like a 5-year-old, but still kinda has the instincts of a... er, however-old-he-started-out-as. Little things like backflipping and guessing what's going on / going to happen make you question his age, it's very good!
Like I said before, WRIIIIIIIIIIIIIITE.
(This one or To Be Alone. Any other and you officially get Super Soaked. =p)

Laughing Oh man, this is gonna be good! Laughing Poor Haruka. Heh, poor Netto; he may just suffocate from the hug he's about to receive. ^_^ I like overprotective Laika; it's very kawaii.

Oh my.

It's good that you got back to this one, and finally you decide to break the news to Haruka about the entire reincarnation scenario...

I enjooyed Laika's conversation with Yuu in the helicopter the most in that chapter. I can't exactly pin down why, but I felt that this sort of behavior in Laika is a throwback to some of your other fics, and it's quite appropriate given the situation.

Good work.

Oh my god, Neko that was absolutely beautiful! You did such a wonderful job with Yuuichirou and Haruka in this chapter, so did with Laika.

I await eagerly the next chapter!

Haruka let out a little scream and covered her mouth as her eyes widened until the white could be seen all around. Netto looked back up at her and frowned. “Mama?” he asked in a small voice.

“N-netto?” she asked in a soft whisper. She looked up to Yuuichirou for conformation to her claim and he nodded slowly. She knelt down and reached out to bring Netto’s eyes up to meet her own. The five year old complied but in a very puzzled manner. “Oh my god,” she breathed. “Netto!”

Netto nodded, “Yeah,” he said slowly.

Haruka pulled her son into her embrace and hugged him tightly. “Oh my god,” she murmured again. “You…” she sniffed.

Yuuichirou nodded and knelt down. “Don’t say anything about you know what,” he whispered. “He doesn’t know what happened.”

Haruka nodded and hugged Netto tighter. “He’s alive,” she mouthed so that only Yuuichirou could see. He noted that the tears that were now openly streaming down her face were tears of voice. He smiled and nodded.

“Mama? You’re squeezing me,” Netto choked out.

Haruka gave a watery chuckle and eased up a little but kept a hold on Netto. Netto didn’t protest but only because he had sorely missed his mother and he really didn’t want to be let go. Not that he’d admit that to anyone else though.

Rockman heard that thought loud and clear and chuckled, drawing a glance up in his direction from Trill. “Why are you laughing?” the small navi asked.

“No reason,” Rockman said softly. He put a finger to his lips to quiet the child like navi down so that Haruka could get herself together in silence.

When Haruka had finally settled down enough to stop crying she straightened up and picked up Netto to cradle in her arms. “Do you want…” Yuuichirou started.

Haruka quickly shook her head. “I don’t know, I don’t care. Explain later,” she said softly.

“Explain what?” Netto asked.

“Nothing,” Haruka said sweetly. “So, are you hungry?” she asked.

Netto grinned and nodded. It always seemed like his mom was the one to always know what he was thinking. Well, her and Rockman at least. “Spaghetti?” he asked.

“I second that,” Yuuichirou replied with a chuckle. He leaned down, “Listen, just know that there are people after him. Don’t let him out of your sight, I’m going to sci-labs for a few hours to examine the Saito.bat files and see if I can’t find out what’s wrong.”

Haruka nodded, “All right. Love you dear,” she said and kissed Yuuichirou on the cheek.

Netto made a face as she did it so on a whim, Yuuichirou made a show of kissing her back which made his son further his look of disgust. Haruka laughed for the first time in days and shifted her hold on Netto but kept him in her tight embrace. Not that he minded much, yet.

About two hours later Enzan, Laika, Pride and Charlie stopped by the Hikari residence at the request of Yuuichirou to make sure that nothing had happened. They found Haruka on the couch keeping her son in her view by watching him play with some old bits of wire she had dug up. She remembered Netto and Yuuichirou playing with them when Netto was younger to make the light bulb on the board. Now he and Rockman argued back and forth which wires to use while nothing really got done but they both looked as if they were enjoying it to a degree.

Netto looked up as they came in and waved. Haruka jumped and turned around, her surprised look relaxing into a smile when she realized who it was. “Hello,” she smiled.

“I take it he told you?” Enzan asked.

Haruka shook her head. “Not everything. Just enough.”

Netto once again look very puzzled but his attention was instantly diverted when Pride asked him to explain what he was trying to do. As soon as he pointed to a red wire, Rockman disagreed with him and they got into another argument over the simple toy. Pride looked on, highly amused as Haruka listened to Charlie, Enzan and Laika as they reiterated the story.

Haruka sighed heavily and glanced at Netto. “I’m just… glad he’s here,” she murmured. “I know the people are after him for some reason but, I want to keep him here,” she looked at the people in front of her.

Charlie nodded, “Of course,” he assured her.

Enzan and Laika both gave him hard looks. “Charlie,” Laika said sharply.

“Calm down, kid,” Charlie said with a grin. “It’s not like we can put him anywhere more or less safe. Let the kid stay with his mom for now.”

“He’s right, Enzan-sama,” Blues said quietly. “Your house is no more or less safe then this place.”

Enzan sighed. “All right,” he muttered.

Haruka beamed at Enzan and Enzan was unwillingly reminded of his own mother. He blushed and shook his head. “Thank you,” she said. “I couldn’t even begin to tell you how I felt when…” her lips twisted. “When I thought he was gone.”

There was a pregnant pause that ended when Netto began to cheer loudly. “Told you!” he yelled. “Ha! I was right!”

Rockman crossed his arms in holographic form. “You took the long way,” he huffed.

“So? It still works. You said it wasn’t gonna!” Netto chided his navi.

“I did not!” Rockman argued. “All I said was it would take longer.”

“You did too,” Netto stuck his tongue out at his navi. “You just changed your answer after I did it.”

“I did not,” Rockman protested.

“Did too!” Netto shot back.

“Did not!” Rockman replied.

“Did too!” Netto said with a wicked grin.

“All right,” Haruka said patiently although when Charlie looked up at her he could have sworn she had a small smile on her face. “You two can stop.”

Netto shrugged and fell onto his back to look up at his mom who was looming over him. “Mama?” he asked.

“Hungry?” she replied.

Netto nodded. “Yeah,” he said with a grin. Somehow she just always seemed to know when he needed something. It was one reason he missed her so much. He needed someone to know what he needed even without him saying so.

Rockman hid a smile as Netto thought this. Sometimes Netto could be so predictable, no matter what age he was.

“I’ve had curry stewing since you got home,” she said with a smile. “Do your friends want to stay for dinner?”

“Sounds good,” Charlie said with a nod of approval.

Pride inclined her head politely in acceptation of the invitation.

Netto looked at his two friends with big brown eyes that he discovered pretty much got him what he wanted from Enzan and made Laika at least a little uncomfortable. “Please?” he asked.

Everyone looked on in amusement as Enzan and Laika fidgeted under Netto’s gaze and both gave in at the same time. “All right,” they said together.

Netto threw his arms into the air happily. “Yay!” he cheered.

“I’ll get the plates,” Haruka said with a smile. “Netto, help me set the table.”

“Awww,” Netto whined.

“Netto,” she said in a warning voice, although even with her back turned she was still smiling.

With an over exaggerated sigh, Netto picked himself up from the floor and followed his mom into the kitchen where she handed him plates to put on the table. Finally, things were starting to go right in her life. Whether he was five or twelve or any age between, as long as she had Netto and as long as she had Saito, human or otherwise, she was the happiest mother on earth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Netto's so damn cute when he's five XD
Indeed he is.
I enjoy how you have Netto retain many of his qualities in his younger form, and how even the simplest things are treasured by many. Netto in his juvenile form, fooling around--perhaps it may have been cruelly logical for this to happen, as Netto gets his shot at childhood again, and Haruka, although scared half to death, could enjoy seeing Netto in a pristine form. However, I can't shake the feeling of impending doom...
Good work.
I love how you portray chibi-Netto as being able to pick up on Enzan & Laika's vulnerability to his puppy eyes & having him exploit it. Yay for fluff! ^_^
“The brat has returned home,” Tsuki murmured into a walkie talkie as she looked into the Hikari residence where Netto was currently setting up dishes.
The man chuckled into his own receiver. “About damn time,” he hissed. “The boss is getting impatient. We have to get him this time, you know what’ll happen if we don’t.”
Tsuki sighed. “Yeah, yeah. I know. Give me a few more hours. He needs to be alone when I strike. Those other Net Saviors are strong.”
There was a pause on the other end and then she heard, “All right, but no more then that. This is it.”
“All righty then,” Tsuki said cheerfully. “I’ll see you in a few hours.”
The man sighed into the walkie talkie and muttered, “Yeah sure,” and cut the connection.
Tsuki kneeled down and continued to observe quietly, waiting for her chance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Netto toddled around the table, obediently putting a plate at each place and making sure it wasn’t in danger of tipping off the table. After two places were set by him alone, Pride went over and helped him, making sure that things weren’t too close to the edge, leaving Netto to just place the things where they needed to be. Netto looked up at Pride happily and she smiled back, thanking whatever happened to allow Netto to live for the twentieth time that day.

Enzan and Laika eyed him and Pride then glanced at each other uneasily. It was only a matter of time before something gave way. They couldn’t play cat and mouse forever, nor could they do anything but wait for the criminals to come out in the open again. The only way that would happen is if Netto was alone, but they weren’t about to let that happen. The more they thought about it the more they realized that they were caught between a rock and a hard place.

Haruka was in the kitchen with Charlie, setting up the curry and rice and getting ready to carry it into the dining room. They were talking quietly, but not unkindly which led Laika to believe that they weren’t talking about their current predicament. He let himself smile a little, glad that there were some people relaxing after their taxing trip around the world.

Netto wandered over and held up his hand to get Laika’s attention. Laika looked down and Netto looked up and they stared at one another for a long moment, not saying anything. Laika had no idea what Netto was thinking, nor did he have any idea what to say. Netto merely stared with a tiny smile on his face until Laika knelt down and sat crosslegged on the floor in front of Netto in an effort to get him to say something. “Yes?” he asked.

Netto grinned and shrugged. “I don’t think I’ve seen you smile yet, Laika,” Netto told him cheerfully. “You look better when you smile.”

Laika stared at Netto and blushed a deep red. Netto grinned again, then scampered over to the kitchen table where Haruka was pouring out the curry onto the plated. Laika watched him go and sighed heavily. “I can’t tell if he’s kidding or not.”

Enzan shrugged. “Probably not,” he said. “It’s something Netto would say, don’t you think?” he asked and gave Laika a tiny smile and walked over to the table as well.

Laika stood up and dusted himself off; he smirked and shook his head. “It probably is,” he said to himself quietly and followed everyone else.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During dinner, Netto was loud and rambunctious, Rockman was calm and collected in an effort to keep his operator under control, Haruka was laughing for the first time in days and everyone was just enjoying themselves in the first time for a long time. It felt good to everyone who was participating that for a few short hours, everyone was able to forget the stress and the terrible danger that awaited them outside.
After dinner they cleaned everything up and Netto wandered around the living room, talking to Trill quietly and yawning periodically. When asked if he was tired he stubbornly shook his head and declared that he wasn’t. Then he and Trill would resume rambling about something or other until Netto began to rub his eyes again.
Finally, Haruka suggested watching a movie. Netto readily agreed and Rockman breathed a sigh of relief that was audible to everyone in the room. As this happened, Pride and Charlie said their good byes and told everyone that they’d be back in the morning.
Netto began to watch the movie that Haruka put in with Trill and Rockman. Laika and Enzan took the quiet moment to catch each others’ gaze and make a silent decision. Enzan stepped forward to tap Haruka on the shoulder.
Haruka was standing with her arms crossed comfortably over her stomach. She was watching Netto and smiling happily. When Enzan tapped her on the shoulder she turned around and looked at the two boys in front of her. She gave them both a nod and before either one could say anything she smiled sweetly and asked, “Would you two like to stay the night?”
Enzan and Laika both gave her relieved smiles and nodded. “If it’s all right with you, Mrs. Hikari,” Enzan replied politely.
Haruka nodded and glanced at Netto. “I’m sure he’d love the company and it will help everyone stay safer. As long as you two are sure you’d like to stay.”
“We’re sure,” Laika and Enzan said together.
Haruka nodded and turned to go upstairs. “All right, I’ll set up the living room then. Keep an eye on Netto please, sometimes he runs away when he’s tired so he can stay up longer.”
Laika saw Netto cross his arms huffily as she said this. He couldn’t help but be slightly amused at this anecdote. He walked over and sat down on the couch on the far end away from Netto and glanced at the movie that was playing. It appeared to be some faced paced sci-fi thriller for kids, which didn’t surprise him in the slightest. Sci-fi and technology had always been Netto’s thing and probably would continue to be for a long time, if not the rest of his life.
Enzan came over as well and sat on the other side of the couch, away from Netto, and together the two boys watched the film uncomfortably while Netto, Rockman and Trill oohed and ahhed at all the right moments. Being a soldier sitting in a house watching a movie wasn’t exactly something Laika was accustomed too. One look at Enzan told him the same thing for his friend.
Netto finally looked from side to side at the two boys on opposite ends of the couch and frowned. “Why are you so far away?” he asked.
“Because,” Laika said simply.
“Why?” Netto asked.
“Because,” Enzan answered.
Rockman snorted as Netto asked. “Why?”
“Because,” Laika and Enzan replied together.
Rockman sighed and cut Netto off before he could ask again. “Because you’re being silly,” he teased.
Netto frowned and crossed his arms tightly over his chest. “No I’m not!” he declared loudly.
“Oh?” Rockman asked as Netto tried to watch the movie again. “Are you sure?”
“Yes,” Netto muttered huffily.
“Really?” Rockman asked.
Netto brought his knees up to his chest and buried his face in his arms. “Yes,” he said, his voice muffled.
“All right,” Rockman conceded. “Then I don’t know why.”
“Huh?” Netto asked.
Laika blinked then laughed outright. Netto had forgotten what the question was in the first place. It seemed that Rockman was quite good at handling his little brother, no matter what age. Netto looked over at Laika in apparent amazement. “You can laugh!” he said loudly.
Laika quickly stopped and looked at the TV screen. “I can laugh,” he said calmly. “Everyone can laugh.”
Netto crawled over to Laika and stared him in the face. “But you’ve never laughed before,” he told Laika seriously.
Laika glared back at Netto while Enzan watched, quite obviously amused. “It doesn’t mean I can’t laugh. Why are you so amazed? Enzan laughs too.”
Netto glanced at Enzan and grinned then looked back at Laika. “But he looks less mean then you do.”
Enzan put his hand over his mouth in a terribly concealed laugh and looked away from the scene. Laika glared at Enzan then back down at Netto. “Netto, drop it and watch the movie.”
Netto pouted for a quick second then flopped down and put his head into Laika’s lap. “Kay’,” he said as he turned to watch the movie and yawned, curling up into the back of the couch.
Laika looked down at Netto and pondered pushing him away, but then decided against it and took the moment for what it was. He was probably safer being so close to him anyways.
Haruka came downstairs a few minutes later to find Enzan and Laika mindlessly watching the movie and Netto fast asleep in Laika’s lap. She turned to the wall monitor to see Rockman carrying Trill and putting a finger over his lips. She nodded and walked over, handing Laika and Enzan a blanket, then putting one over Netto. She then smiled at all of the them and left the room as quietly as she came.
Outside, someone watched, waiting for their chance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Holy crap! An update! I know, crazy isn't it?

Indeed, indeed. Then again, I don't know many fanfics that you have dropped the ball on completely, so I suppose I can't be surprised. It just took a while, that's all.

Anyway, I again build on the comments I mande the previous chapter--the reader can still see that Netto is himself, albeit about half as old. You can still see that Netto has the same heart that he does in his former form--he still has many of the same thoughts and stances on his friends, and making him much younger and therefore more open to expressing these thoughts makes for a somewhat unique experience and a method of allowing the side protagonists to see how the main one views them.

The antagonist haven't made a strike...yet...but the first paragraph still keeps them there. However, if you wanted to focus on the above, maybe it would have been better to omit their parts entirely.

The night wore on. Laika had long since lost interest in the movie and was now trying to shift his weight so that his right leg was not losing all it's feeling. Unfortunately every time he moved Netto also curled up more keeping his leg in a position that was less than comfortable.

Enzan looked at Laika and motioned for him to stand. "You know he won't wake up," Enzan said.

Laika looked uncomfortably down at Netto and back to Enzan. Finally Rockman's voice could be heard from the device around Netto's waist. "Enzan-san is right," he murmured. "Netto is out like a light, you're fine."

Laika sighed and eased himself from underneath the sleeping child and pushed a pillow into the space that his leg had previously occupied. Netto sighed and curled up tightly into the pillow that Laika used. Finally he stopped stirring and Laika breathed a quiet sigh when Netto clearly slept again. "You're fine," Rockman said sleepily and then turned to Trill.

"You should go to the home computer," he told the tired navi,

Trill looked up at Rockman and frowned. "Why?" he asked in the same voice that Netto used when he was looking for an answer that he knew he wouldn't understand.

"You're tired and you need to get more rest. The main console in the house will give you more energy," Rockman told him truthfully.

Trill's beleaguered brain tried to understand but it came up short. "Huh?" he asked.

"It's better for you," Rockman sighed and led the small navi to the main computer. "It helps you get more energy."

"Oh," Trill said and then went into a sleep mode.

Rockman sighed and tuned around to see Blues and Searchman looking at him. "I'm fine," he said hastily.

"We know," Blues assured him. "But you should rest too."

Rockman opened his mouth to protest but Searchman held up a hand and shook his head. "We know this can't be easy," he said quickly.

Blues nodded his agreement and continued, "we can make sure it's safe," he pointed out. "However you aren't ready to help at all. Keeping the link in check, handling Netto's emotions and your own on top of just functioning," he took a breath. "Please just rest now."

Rockman thought about protesting but he saw the look on his friend's faces and realized it was futile. "Fine," he said eventually. "Keep and eye out" he asked.

"Always," Blues replied with a small smile.

Rockman nodded and exited into his PET. He felt Netto's side of the link and was put at east almost instantly. Then he entered a sleep most and slept quietly in the peace of his home. It felt nice, was the last thought that crossed his mind before he slept.

Blues let out a slow sigh and Enzan's face appeared on a screen in front of him. "How are things there?"

"Rockman is asleep," Blues replied shortly.

Enzan nodded and pulled his PET to shoulder level before slotting it into one of the many consoles in the Hikari household in order to keep Blues' power up. "Scan the area," he commanded sleepily.

Blues nodded and realized that not only Netto was tired but so were Enzan and Laika. Mature they might be, but they were also human. The many nights of worrying and difficult days of dealing with the stress were beginning to take their toll. "You should sleep," he told his operator.

Enzan shifted uncomfortably before Blues quickly added. "We can wake you in case of an emergency," he motioned to himself and Searchman.

"You should rest as well, Laika-sama," Searchman added,

Laika and Enzan exchanged dubious glances and their navis noticed. "We can handle it. The Hikari household has a state of the art security system. Don't worry, you'll know if there's trouble," Searchman said.

Enzan sighed and Laika nodded. "Fine, keep watch," he commanded and leaned back.

Enzan finally seemed to accept the terms and fell asleep himself. After a half hour both operators were in dreamland and their navis were patrolling the outer perimeter to make sure no one was there.

Tsuki smiled and nodded to the line on her device that showed decreased net activity in the Hikari household. "Our chance," she said simply.

Her navi as well as her partner and his navi quietly went to their positions. It was finally time. Any moment now...

Netto stirred and groaned into his pillow while Rockman dealt with his own night terrors. In his dream he saw Netto impaled on the sword that effectvely ended his life and Rockman's only weeks earlier. Netto looked at him with a shocked, empty stare and Rockman reached out to him before it was too late. "Netto-kun!"

Netto sat up, his nightmare waking him up with a start. "Nii-san!" he yelled.

"Netto-kun," Rockman murmured, still half asleep.

Netto gasped and pulled his PET up to his face. "Nii-san?" he asked in a wavering voice.

Rockman finally woke up and saw Netto's small face on his screen. "Netto-kun," he breathed.

Netto's eyes welled up with tears and Rockman guiltily realized his own dreams had changed into Netto's own. "Sorry," he murmured.

"I'm sorry," Netto said shakily, not realizing the cause of his dreams. "I got scared."

"It's fine," Rockman said hastily. "It's fine," he assued his twin. "We're fine."

Netto nodded and bit his lower lip. "Are you okay?" he asked, trying to pretend that he wasn't shaking out of his skin.

Rockman smiled briefly then nodded. "We're fine," he repeated trying to will Netto to believe him.

Netto nodded then opened his mouth to reply when the house went quiet. Rockman stopped short and looked around. "Netto-kun..." he began but he never had the chance to finish his thought.

Suddenly a white smoke began to fill the house. Lunar and Solar stood by the main security programs on the first and second floor smirking. Suddenly the connection to the main net was cut off and all navis present were trapped where they were. Rockman, Searxhman and Blues in their PET's and Trill in the computer upstairs.The navis began to yell to get their operator's attention but as soon as they woke up the gas began to fill their vision.

"The hell..." Laika gasped before springing to his feet.

Netto sat up sleepily and looked around. Something was wrong but he couldn't put a finger on it.

"Get him out," Enzan said quickly as he gasped through the gas that seeped through the ventilator by the chair he was sitting in.

Laika grabbed Netto and held his breath trying to make his way through the door. Netto groaned but didn't protest as he felt himself carried to the exit.

Suddenly the door opened and closed and the figures of a man and woman entered the foggy room.

Laika backed off and looked for an exit before he ran out of air.

The man was quick and pulled Laika back, kneeing him in the kidneys from behind. Laika gasped in pain and tried to keep ahold of Netto. Netto grunted as he was dropped onto the floor then cried out as he was scooped up by someone he didn't know.

Laika tried to stand up but was unable to move his body because of the sleeping gas now filling the room. "Search...man," he gasped before he fell unconsious.

"Laika-sama," Searchman said quietly while trying to find a way, any way to keep what was happening in the real world for coming to an end. The man who hit his operator was wearing a gas mask but Searchman could have sworn the bastard smiled.

"Netto-kun!" Rockman yelled in a panic before his PET was turned off. Netto squirmed in the woman's grasp and he became weaker as he watched his mint haired friend pass out.

"Nii-san..." Netto sighed before closing his eyes for good. The woman felt him relax in her grasp and she quickly shifted him under one arm and gave her partner a thumbs up. He nodded and they made their way through the door that led outside, passing Enzan's lifeless body as they left. Both chuckled and quickly entered the car that was waiting outside in front of the house.

Once inside both pulled off the masks they were wearing and Tsuki adjusted her charge so that he was pinned between the two in the car. Both smiled as they contacted their contractor on the screen. "We have the package on the way for delivery," she said.

"Very good," the voice replied and the screen went blank.

Inside the useless PET Rockman curled up in anxiety. "Netto-kun..." he whispered. "Damnit," he growled and punched the floor then began to plot his reaction once the PET was turned back on.

He wasn't done with his counter attack. Not by a long shot. There was no way in hell he was loosing Netto-kun again. Never again...

O/O/O/O/O/O/O/O

So....yeah. I know the ending to this, despite forgetting this fic existed until 5 pm today.

Anywho for anyone left...enjoy!
