I just think there are many more interesting characters than Sephiroth (what I've seen of him) out there; even those whose backstories aren't completely developed (i.e., in the earlier games) seem to appeal to me more personality wise. I guess because I don't measure my interest in a character as per their pwnage level. :P

'Course, this is coming from someone whose favorite male character is a longhaired, silk-ribbon-wearing guy with a chainsaw.

He was not that strong. He was an absolutely pathetic boss, with a horribly designed weapon. His background was the only nearly decent thing about him, and even that wasn't quite as good as it could've been.

Sephiroth should've been more of a rival character, not a final boss character. Sephiroth shouldn't have been turned into the biggest raging stereotype in the RPG world. Sephiroth should have died and never came back, at all, ever.

Those reasons aside, most people hate him because a vast majority of his fanbase is pretty stupid.

The same can be said for Cloud, and, oddly enough, I don't rightly like him that much, either. I'd have been happy to see them both die and leave the thing at that, but Square Enix doesn't know when to stop.

Now, Cloud is someone I don't like too much. He's a bit of a spoiled child.
Horrible Boss? He was fecking hard for me! Well, that could be due to the fact that my characters were a bit underleveled...
His weapon is quite illogical, but there's a reason it's called Final Fantasy. Besides, you can't deny the fact that the Masamune rocks. Who doesn't like giant swords? Giant katanas at that! Laughing

His backstory is what I like most though. Most people just don't bother to look at that though. Izumi,(and maybe a few others) should look him up on wikipedia. His story, and Jenova's, are explained quite well.

Yes, the Fenrir was quite awesome.
Well, Sephiroth was powerful, in terms of the storyline. A man who can slaughter an entire building full of people and heavily armed guards
singlehandedly must be powerful. Oh yeah, and becoming a demi god must mean something, too. Razz

Concerning his fanbase....I must say that I'm ashamed of my fellow fans. >.> A LOT of them are completely stupid. Not to mention the overflowing amount of yaoi pairings. I'm looking at you, fangirls. CloudxSephiroth doesn't even make
sense.

To be honest, I have yet to play Final Fantasy 7, so I know little of Sephiroth's backstory, motives, etc. In fact, I used to be rather neutral on his existence. That is, until I fought him in Kingdom Hearts.

Between his impossibly long weapon reach, huge range of impossibly powerful attacks and "Descend Heartless Angel" (because instant death attacks are always fun, right?)...I dunno...he just sort of rubbed me the wrong way, if you know what I mean.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't mind fighting guys who are really powerful. I mind when those guys are ridiculously OVERpowered, like Sephiroth often is. Then they stop being impressive and start being annoying.

His insane disposition gives him quite a bit of character. It completely derives him of any sort of compassion for human life, making him a cold killer.
He has a pretty good idea for world domination (and possibly the universe);
which is to become a god. Now, that's orginal.
And another thing. I've heard a lot of people call him "emo."

Eh...his backstory is somewhat interesting, but I absolutely detested his character. Nothing was shown other than him being a nutcase.

I did sorta like FFVII, if only for the gameplay. The other characters I would have liked to see get development were shunted aside for Cloud, who I dislike with a fiery passion. I must agree, Sephiroth shouldn't have been the main villain, because I didn't give a crap about him or Cloud.

Well, Sephiroth seems awe inspiring and cool when you're about 12 or 13, which was the age I played Final Fantasy VII. He's sort of a character I've grown up with, but I'd have to say Red XIII was my favourite character in that game. At any rate, he's not a bad final enemy really, unlike FFIX: [spoil:226244a6a6]Chaos who just pops in at the end with the excuse of, "Hi I'm the Final Boss, you don't know me but this is really all my fault."[/spoil:226244a6a6] I think they need a Final Fantasy game where you aren't saving the world, maybe just a country or something. When you have villians who want to rule the world, things essentially have to get cheesy and cliché since it's a very unrealistic and insane goal.

Sephiroth's not bad really, but he's not that great and people really need to let FFVII go. Sure, it was great at the time but we've moved on, it's time they did as well.

To me, that excuse doesn't work. There are a lot of older games than FFVII, and they're still revered. The series of those games, like Megaman for instancem have been going on for quite a while.
I do agree with you though, with the fact that they need new goals. I want to be the one trying to destroy the world! >D

No, I think what HiKaizer is saying is that people need to look past FFVII and realize that Sephiroth is not the 'omg greatest FF villain evah', as many people like to exclaim around the internet. While he did have some degree of impact, he still pales in comparison to villains like Kefka and Zemus...at least, in my opinion. Kefka did significantly more than Sephiroth, and had a personality that made me like him. Sephiroth was just...plain.
