There's a Barrel in EXE, and a Barrel in Dash. Are they equivalent/alternate universe/different time period forms? I know Colonel is from X, which is yet another alternate universe/different time period. This makes things confusing (for me). So...is old man Professor Barrel an older version of EXE's Barrel in an alternate universe? Or did the guy's re-use the name because they liked it?

No...they are two completely different people. Barrel Casket is an old digger, in the Dash Universe, which supposedly takes place hundreds of years after the X Series. EXE Barrel is a military-type man, who has nothing to do with archeology. We do see him older in Stream, but he's nothing like Barrel Caskett.

I think they just reused his name, to create a character for EXE. The two aren't related in a cosmic way

That doesn't neccessarily mean the EXE Barrel isn't a reference to the original Barrel. >.<

For example, Glyde and Glyde.exe are rather different in key ways, but it is widely accepted that Glyde.exe is a reference to Glyde from DASH.

Roll was like a housekeeping robot with a screwdriver for a main weapon while Roll.exe is a Rockman-phile with an overdose of pink.

Slashman was a hideous beast that became a steamlined ninja like being in the EXE series.

Yaito in DASH was a quiz girl. Yaito in EXE is a spoiled rich brat.

Need I go on? The only character I can say is a direct cross over is Dr. Wily.

And Tadashi Hikari, don't forget about him.

It's certainly possible the character designers at Capcom thought making the EXE Barrel a sortof younger, more action-heroy version of the Legends Barrel.
