well I know some people on this website may kill me but I don't think rockman was the best because of all the reused footage and samey episodes, soooo I'm gonna say FMA. But there are several other animes that were quite good.

Is Reboot applicable? If so I wanna choose that. Sure it just did the whole creat and resolve a dif issue per ep. for a while but it had awesome animation for it's time, that still can be classed as "good" even now. I loved the characters and I loved how they classed with enough other. How can you not love Bob? And Mike the TV.

Other than that I'd say Metabots or FMA. FMA really held me from about episodes 12 on but I only like up to 40 something. Before 12 it was to Pokemon-ish for me. Sure they set the world, but nothing really happenned that obviously lead anywhere. After the 40 something, it got a bit odd, like they were trying to wrap it up too quickly.

Metabots. Ikky and Metabee clashed so much, I loved it. I loved the style and the Tuxedo Mask thing Henry had going on (although they never explicitly said it was him, how can you really say otherwise?)

Cowboy Bebop.

It's mature enough without the....er.... excessive gore and exposures.
Enough serious moments.
Enough emotional moments.
Enough philosophical moments.
Enough action moments.

...If only it doesn't look too much like Lupin III -_-;

I'm with NumberGirl that Bebop is easily my fave of all time and the best ever. There are always people who say the plot isn't consistent enough, with too many fillers for a 26 Ep. series, but still. You can't forget that Yoko Kanno's soundtrack is one of the most popular anime OST's of all time and is every bit as instrumental in making it such a great show as the art or storyline. And I've always liked that you can see a bit of yourself in just about every character. As one website used to put it, everything you need to know about life you can learn from Bebop. If you're just going by the English dub, you've got some of the top VAs making up the cast, and I've always felt these were the roles that defined Steve Blum and Wendee Lee. I've seen the original Japanese version as well, and there is virtually no difference in the great quality voice work. And don't get me started about how I wish "Big Shot" was a real life bounty hunter show. Smile Plus, I honestly think Bebop is the only anime that has ever made my eyes get all watery. Guys don't usually admit that, but yeah, I teared up at the end. T_T Show me someone who doesn't after watching the series completely through!

Everything else, from Rockman, Evangelion, Wolf's Rain, Dragonball (as a whole), FMA, GITS:SAC, Outlaw Star, or G Gundam even, gets lumped into a different category in my mind. But since it has many parallels to Bebop, with virtually the same production team, Wolf's Rain would be the second best if I had to choose.

You're gonna carry that weight...

I assume this is strictly anime series only, otherwise I'd be bringing out the Miyazaki juggernauts.

Rockman Exe was, early on, the greatest anime I have ever seen. It wasn't until the middle of the first season that it started to dissolve into the usual cliches, and I consider those earlier episodes to be without equal.

Aside from that, Neon Genesis Evangelion is in a league by itself, almost from start to finish, with only a few weak episodes here and there. Sure, it's not as good as the manga itself, but it's still pretty freakin good.

Since I usually watch Romantic comedy anime in general, I'd have to say Ouran High School Host Club or, even if it's not a comedy, Tsubasa Chronicle. Rockman may be good... but it's not the best... I love Ranma 1/2 to pieces but just like Inuyasha, it ran on too long to be called the greatest ever.

Disgaea could be the greatest... if they atleast put the effort into the animation that they did to trailers for it...

You want to know what the greatest anime ever really is? Hands down.

It's Pokemon..

I've loved and still love many anime including Sailor Moon, Ranma, Galaxy Angel, Magic Knight Rayearth and Cutey Honey...

...However, if you were to ask me what I think the greatest anime ever is, I'd have to reply:

Outlaw Star.

From the well-developed characters, the awesomely done artwork and voiceacting, to the plot that constantly moves foward without skipping a beat and the overall style, I'd have to say that OS is very, VERY hard to top as an anime series.

...Although its "Sister series" does very little justice to the standard it set... >_>

I still have to answer Neon Genesis: Evangelion. I've watched it more times than any other anime, love the music, was seriously tempted to get some of the Ayanami Rei figures at Connecticon, and enjoyed the last two episodes. Especialy Rei's monologue in episode 25. The movie felt a little off track when they started using live footage, and the end was depressing, but I can look at it like this: I can watch the series, go to the movie after episode 24, then once Komm Susser Tod is finished playing, I can watch episodes 25 and 26 and ignore the rest of the movie. Oh, and I have been enjoying the manga as well. It would be nice to see it continue some time. I wonder if there'll be any more after the next issue. Kaworu's already had significantly more time in the manga than the anime. Hmm, they could probably do three more really, depending on what the writer decides to do with the story.

Other series that I enjoy are FLCL (great soundtrack), Tenchi Muyo (esp. Universe due to greater development of storyline), and Fullmetal Alchemist (also with a fantastic soundtrack), just to name what I think are some of the best. I could go on. A lot. But other people need to post too. And no, the soundtracks aren't the only things good about the FLCL or FMA, 'cause if they were, I'd be including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It's good, but not as good as those three.

Captain Tsubasa :D

Great sport (soccer), great anime, great games based off of it. Although I've only played parts 1 and 2.

Oh yeah, forgot all about Pokemon. Same thing as Rockman Exe; had some great earlier episodes, and the second movie had some nice battles, but the show's quality took a nosedive around the end of the first season. All of a sudden, it took months for Ash to get from one gym to the next, the pokemon he would use changed so often it was hard to keep track of them, and the focus of 90% of the episodes switched to minor characters with a Pokemon-of-the-week (a varation on the Villain-of-the-week cliche) style. Sad, really.

I found Azumanga Daioh INCREDIBLY hard to sit through. Naruto is okay, and NGE just sucks. The movie was like cheap frickin porn.
[spoil:fef87100ac]That one character the main character likes: I can't believe we're the only two people left alive.
Main character: LETS HAVE SEX![/spoil:fef87100ac]

>_>

As good as .exe was it is nothing close to the best. Inuyasha is INCREDIBLY reptetive, as was DBZ. DB was a lot better than DBZ. Cutey Honey looks ridiculously stupid (no offense) although I have to agree with you that Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop (despite its great fillers) were good shows.

As for the greatest of all time, I have no clue.

Disgaea is an anime? Its a good game but I don't know how it would be as an anime. But then again I said the same thing about Star Ocean 2, and Star Ocean EX is pretty good. Too bad they never finished it.[/spoil]

Disgaea anime is... I wouldn't call it absolutely good or bad, but you should definately wait before you judge it based on how it starts.

My favorite would be Noein. Plot's pretty weird and hard to follow for around the first third, but it's got some excellent animation, the plot does get pretty good overall and the character development more so.

Another thing I like is that despite having a moderately sized cast, nearly everybody gets focus at some point or another. Even one of the most minor of the "not random person walking along the street" characters gets an episode about her at one point.
It changed her to an actual character rather than a plot device for another person's character development, as she was shaping up to be earier.

Different opinions for the win. I'd like to remind people that this thread is for discussing, in your opinion, which is the best anime ever, not to question someone else's favorite series instead of adding something to the conversation.

I don't think I have many favorites, other than most of the GitS franchise. FMA was okay... not of my favorites ever but still an enjoyable piece of animation.

I'm quite surprised that there's no Haruhiists inside this topic. Not that I'm one, mind you, but they should've made their appearance by now. >>
