Well it's been a while. Been busy with other fics, but that's no excuse, so without further ado, here it is (once again I apoligize in advance).
Chapter 15- Doesn’t Know When To Give Up.
Damn it! Enzan’s thoughts streamed quickly. Damn! I didn’t think he had that trick. Kawarimi? When…how? A look of realization. Oh. Shit, forgot he’d gotten some new powers from Forte. Enzan’s head slumped in disgrace, jaw resting on Starman’s hand.
Starman looked at him, almost amused. “he fell asleep… must’ve been too much for him.” He shook his head sullenly. Suddenly a searing pain hit him in his leg! “Argh!” he yelled loosening his grip on Enzan. In a flash Blues was upon him, wrenching the egg-haired boy from the Starman’s grip. With a final grunt of effort Enzan was pulled free.
“Enzan-sama!” Blues cradled Enzan in his arms. Enzan’s head was low, his mind unreachable. A knife was held loosely in one hand.
I wonder… thoughts trailed. I wonder how many attacks hit him before he used Kawarimi… I’m pretty sure the sword hit, so… yeah! That’ll work! Enzan’s head suddenly snapped to attention. He glared at Starman. “Let’s try this again!” he ordered Blues.
“… as you wish Enzan-sama.” Blues seemed saddened. He’d only just saved him, and now Enzan wanted to risk his life again. Blues let out an unnoticeable sigh, letting go of Enzan.
“Listen…” Enzan instructed Blues as he began making hand motions. Starman raised an eyebrow.
What the hell are they doing? They finished whatever conversation they had been having, suddenly turning towards him again. A click of something being slotted in.
“Slot in Gold Fist!” An oversized golden fist appeared on Blues’ hand, replacing his sword. “NOW!” Enzan and Blues charged at Starman from both sides.
“No idea what you were talking about, but this is too easy!” Starman quipped, ducking as two fists came hurtling towards him.
“!”
“!” Enzan and Blues both let out a gasp as they hit each other, locked in a cross counter.
“See what I said? Too easy!” a shuriken suddenly struck him in the back. “! How?” he sputtered. In a puff of smoke Blues’ image was replaced by that of a dummy’s.
“Kawarimi,” Enzan smiled, passing his thumb over his nose- a large bruise was present on his face.
“!… but you! You took a hit just to land an attack! You’re… you’re CRAZY!” Starman took a step back as Enzan staggered towards him.
“Crazy am I? You’re the person walking straight into my trap.” Enzan said calmly. Starman’s eyes were filled with fury.
“Me! You’re kidding, right? YOU WILL PAY FOR THAT REMARK!!” Starman screamed, raising his arms. “METEORS!!” Enzan smiled slyly.
“Trap triggered. Anti-Fire.” A tremor shook the area as the flaming rocks that had been flying towards Enzan changed direction, pummeling Starman from all sides. When the smoke cleared it revealed Starman on his knees. Enzan took a step towards him. Blues cautiously followed.
“Impossible.” Starman slammed his fist to the ground.
“Do you give up yet?” Enzan asked. Starman’s face spun up to glare at him.
“IMPOSSIBLE!!” with a leap he was on Enzan, tackling him, punching him, pulling at his hair like a child.
Enzan let out a scream as Starman bit him in the shoulder. “Blues! Help me!” Blues rushed to his aid, pulling Starman off him.
“STARMAN! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!” Blues eyes were filled with rage. His words came out fast, nearly hissing. “I am your opponent! Attack Enzan again and I will show you no mercy!”
“Do you ever!” Starman snapped. “Do you ever show anyone mercy? You’re famous for it, aren’t you… that merciless killing?” Starman was on a roll now, his voice rising to a howl. “You’d kill your own mother if she got in your way! Foolish navi, if your owner doesn’t ever show mercy, how can you say you do?”
“I do so show mercy… Enzan-sama, what’s wrong?”
Enzan’s features were shadowed, his words soft. “It’s true…” Starman’s ears perked up.
“What was that?” he smirked evilly, expecting Enzan to give up then and there.
“It’s true…”
“Enzan-sama!” Blues looked at him in shock.
“It’s true,” Enzan went on, getting to his feet, face still dark. “It’s true, what Blues says. We do so SHOW MERCY!” his face snapped up, tears streaking down his cheeks. “We do so show mercy. WE SHOWED YOU MECY, gave you a chance to surrender. But now there is no mercy! You have gone too far!” and with this Enzan pulled out his PET.
“Enzan-sama, don’t tell me you’re going to use it?” Blues voice trembled. Enzan nodded coldly.
“Like I said, no mercy.” Starman looked from Enzan to Blues in confusion.
“What? What’s going on?” Enzan looked to Blues- Blues nodded. “I have no idea what’s going on!” Starman whined.
Enzan interrupted Starman, slotting in a chip.
“What is that?” Starman looked on nervously as the chip slid into the PET. He trembled in fear. Is this one of their legendary moves? Could it be… Delta Ray Edge? He’d heard of this move, so powerful even Forte feared it. Would that be his fate? He looked on seriously, eyes tuned to the PET, waiting for some sign.
“Thunderball!” Enzan muttered finally, as a slow-moving yellow sphere appeared in front of him.
“NANI!” Starman sweatdropped in shock. Here he was expecting something deadly, something truly legendary.
“Hah! I knew it! You’re all just a bunch of hype and hot air!” he laughed egotistically, slapping his sides as the Thunderball slowly drew closer. He got ready to dodge it. “Now!” he leapt into the air as it slipped past him, floating off into the distance. “HAH!!” Starman suddenly realized Blues was standing behind him, facing the wrong direction. A puzzled look crossed his face. “?”
“Slot in, Magnecoil!” With a flash a magnetic coil appeared on Blues’ hand, and he quickly thrust it out towards the Thunderball, drawing it in. The second it was drawn in he spun around stabbing Starman in the stomach.
“There,” Blues chuckled. “Now you wont be going anywhere. How’s that for merciless?” Starman was stunned- in more ways than one.
“Double slot in, Assassin Sword, Machine Sword! Transmit!!” a curved scimitar appeared in one of Blues’ hands, glinting in the street light. He smiled. A second blade, blunt, rectangular, and laced with golden wires, appeared in his free hand. It pulsed with power.
“Hyahhh!” he slashed Starman with both blades. Starman trailed into pixels, as bits of him were cast away with the wind.
Starman Plugging Out
“Wow,” Enzan laughed to himself. “Netto was right… the hype factor really does work!”
“Enzan-sama, I’m so ashamed.” Blues shook his head sadly. I really hate that technique. Only an idiot too caught up in trying to figure out what the hell it is would fall for it.
***
A cold wind beat down on the ground outside of the Science Bureau as Gyroman made an emergency landing.
“I’ve been hit!” he yelled as he spun, caught in a tail-spin. Meijin clung to the rope as hard as he could, fiancé clutched in his arms as they spiraled towards the ground.
Reaching into his pocket, Meijin pulled out his PET, flipping it open and on. “CHARLIE!” he yelled into the PET’s com-link. Faint static crackled in the background.
“Charlie,” he tried again, getting desperate. From within the static he thought he heard a voice. Casting aside uncertainty, he shouted an order into the PET- “Send a recovery chip quick!” He wasn’t sure whether he’d been heard or not as he slipped the PET back into his pocket.
Gyroman spun wildly on- a slow, hot wind surrounded the area. Meijin raised an eyebrow, looking to the ground; several types of virus scuttled on the ground below. Just great, he thought as Gyroman slowly descended into the center of the virus throng.
Suddenly Gyroman got a boost in strength, rising several feet into the air. Meijin smiled down at the ground. Charlie you jerk, waiting until the last minute. They landed safely on the roof a minute later.
Meijin hoisted Makoto over his shoulder, walking past a bragging Gyroman, towards the door leading from the helipad into the building. He grinned as he walked past- “You’ll have to stay out here and stand guard. The ceiling inside is too low for your big head.”
Gyroman sweatdropped in shock. “Hey! I just helped you out big time! Don’t I get some credit?”
“You also almost killed us,” Meijin strode coldly past him, stepping into the darkened building.
***
“… Hey!”
Fuujin stared blankly at the yellow navi; Kouryuu clutched his gun tighter.
“What do you want?” he said through gritted teeth.
Brightman paused, putting his finger to his lips to consider this for a moment.
His face lit up. “Check it out! I want you guys to fight me!”
Kouryuu glared at him. “Are you sure you can’t just cut your losses? It seems like Forte has lost interest in you and your friend.” Brightman closed his eyes and crossed his arms confidently, completely unfazed.
“Might be true, might not. But CHECK IT OUT! I gotsa’ plan!” On the words “gotsa’ plan” Brightman leapt into the air, forming a ball of energy in his palm!
“I’ll just beat you, and then I’ll be back in his graces!” Brightman shouted, tossing the sphere recklessly at Kouryuu, who, after grabbing Fuujin, leapt to the left, dodging.
Brightman pouted. “That was supposed to work!”
Skidding to a stop on the wet pavement, Kouryuu once again addressed the wiry navi.
“I’ll ask you once again. Can’t we just put this pointless violence aside? I don’t much feel like fighting right now.” his voice was tense as he looked down at Fuujin.
“NO WAY!” Brightman gave his answer, launching himself towards the pair in a mad rage.
Kouryuu sighed, cocking his revolver. “So it’s come to this…”
Fuujin looked up from where he sat, completely confused, as his navi and Brightman clashed, locking fists in a grapple.
“Why is this happening? Why can’t you just-” he collapsed without finishing the sentence.
“FUUJIN!”
Fuujin lay motionless on the pavement.
*** Science Bureau
BEEP BOOP BOP
Shifting Makoto to his left shoulder, Meijin entered the security code into the access panel.
“Urhhhh… Meijin?” the woman slung over his shoulder moaned, waking up.
Looking over his shoulder, Meijin’s face was bright.
“You’ve woken up!”
“No shit Sherlock.” Makoto groaned, rubbing her head. “I feel like a building fell on me.”
“It very nearly did.”
“What?” Makoto eyed him sleepily.
“Nothing,” Meijin replied, turning his attention back to the security panel.
“Where… no, why. Why are we at the Science Bureau?” Makoto asked accusingly, looking around.
Meijin ignored her, finishing the code- the door slid open without a sound.
“And why are you ignoring me?” she continued, her voice rising slightly. “What did you want to talk to me about earlier?” she asked as he set her down.
“… Follow me.” his voice was low as he stepped through the doorway.
She did as he said, taking a nervous step into the next room.
“Oh. My. God!” She exclaimed slowly, gazing at the spectacle she saw as she entered the room.
It was filled with monitors and keyboards, with random math and statistics streaming across the screens; a few glass chambers filled one corner of the lab- this wasn’t quite what had her attention though.
What was inside them did.

Chapter 16- “Coming Undone- I’m Coming Undone”
“This is an emergency evacuation announcement for all of Akihara town and the Den City area,” Kero Midorikawa’s voice blared over the city’s loudspeaker system, and on every television screen in the shop’s windows.
Higure and Shuuko stared in shock at the screen as Kero continued her announcement.
Higure adjusted his glasses nervously, the turned to leave.
“Where are you going?” Shuuko asked him, tears welling up in her eyes- this all was too much for her to handle.
“Kero-chan said to head to the Science Bureau, or to the Center’.” Higure replied, slinging ‘de masu’ onto the end of his sentence as was the usual.
Shuuko shook her head with confusion. “But I don’t know where that is!”
Lifting a finger Higure pointed in the direction of the Science Bureau. “That way, huh?”
Turning to look in that direction she saw an opening as the uncontrollable crowds parted. Biting her lip she ran through the newly opened path before Higure could say another word.
Realization struck him. “Oh. The Science Bureau’s in the other direction, huh?” he said to no-one in particular, watching as Shuuko ran off into the rain.
Turning, he walked calmly in the correct direction, uncharacteristically thinking only of himself.
***
Netto clutched Meiru’s palm, helping her up onto the platform with a grunt.
“Am I that heavy?”
Netto gave a quick ‘no’ before raising his head to look around at their surroundings- the view from the top of the elec-tower would help them find his brother.
Meiru stood nervously next to him as he concentrated on the horizon, skimming through the city… it looked like the idea was a bust. The tower just wasn’t tall enough.
“Netto…” Meiru spoke, frowning. He looked at her intently.
“What, Meiru-chan?”
She bit her lip. Maybe the idea she’d had was a bad one… she was about to say as much when Netto interrupted her, pointing.
Tesla and Charlie trudged towards them through the newly forming crowds running rampant in the streets.
***
“Fuujin!” Kouryuu turned his back on Brightman, rushing to his owner’s side.
“Humph,” Brightman smirked, creating a bulb of energy in his palm. “Check it out,” he sighed, shaking his head without passion.
Kouryuu turned to look with frightened eyes at the bright-eyed navi. Suddenly the eyes were brighter as Brightman realized he now once more had his foes attention.
“CHECK IT OUT!” he thrust the pulsing bulb of light from his grasp, sending it hurtling towards Kouryuu.
“Damn.” Kouryuu cursed under his breath as he moved to dodge the attack, stopping a second after taking his first step. “Damn, damn, damn!”
He’d forgotten about Fuujin.
With an about-face he leapt back to where he’d been, scooping the bearded boy up in his arms, and moving to escape the blast once again- he was a fraction of a second too slow. The blast caught him full in the back, spinning as it slammed.
Kouryuu let out a grunt as he fell forward, Fuujin soaring out of his arms.
With a skid the boy landed three feet away, in a muddy heap. Kouryuu reached out a feeble hand, clutching at the moment- the moment passed.
Cursing Brightman mentally Kouryuu climbed to his feet, and turned to face the object of his aggression.
“You have no morals.” Kouryuu said simply, arms dropping inconspicuously to his side.
Brightman smiled. “Do I need them?”
Kouryuu forced a fake smile, reaching to his side, where a collapsed red staff dangled. “Not really.”
With a quick action Kouryuu grabbed the staff, twisting it in his hands as he darted towards Brightman. With a snap the staff slid out, extending- the monk navi leapt into the air.
“This is for Fuujin!” before Brightman knew what was happening Kouryuu was beating him with the staff.
Fuujin stirred behind the robed navi, sitting up, and scratching his head.
“Kouryuu…” he said sleepily. His eyes widened as he got to his feet. “Kouryuu, no!”
There were several things monks must never do, rules that were set in stone… it looked as if Kouryuu might break those rules a bit.
***
Mugen dangled helplessly by his broken arm, in Forte’s grip. Groaning, he raised his head to look up at Forte.
A cold smile pursed Forte’s lips. This angered Mugen to no end.
Mugen’s eyes burned brightly, then his fire died down as he lost consciousness. Deep down in his mind frantic thoughts echoed… If only… If only. If only.
If only. A second voice interrupted his thoughts. Dazed, he looked around, lost in the world of his mind.
Gazing out over the dark world within, a lone white-haired figure stood in the distance, leaning casually on a sword. His white hair was long, and trailed behind him in the breeze.
“Wh… who are you?” Mugen stammered.
The navi was silent for a second. “… Me? You shouldn’t be asking that. You don’t even know who you are.”
Crackling thunderheads hung thick over the simple black plane within his mind.
“What?” Mugen stared blankly at the figure- a hand tapped him on his shoulder.
“What is the right question for a time like this.” the second figure smiled- his pure white teeth were the only distinguishing feature on shadowed face.
Mugen’s eyes wavered as he stared at the mystery figure. “… but… who are you?” Mugen asked again.
A crack of thunder lit the area, illuminating the navi’s face- Mugen let out a gasp as he stared himself in the eyes.
“I’m you, bro.” the navi smiled casually.
***
Makoto stared at the object in one of the holographic chambers. “What is it?” she asked, her voice trembling.
Meijin strode past her, towards the one of the larger computer consoles. Makoto waited a minute, then, when she was sure she wouldn’t be getting her answer anytime soon, walked over to Meijin with a huff.
“I said what is it?” she asked, thrusting her hands on her hips. Meijin continued his silence, focused on the work at hand. Getting angry, Makoto looked from Meijin to the glass tube housing the hologram. She’d just have to figure it out for herself!
Stomping over to the chamber, her hand reached out to push a button- Meijin’s hand reached out, stopping her before she’d made contact.
“NO.” he ordered simply before turning back to his work. Makoto’s cheeks burned crimson.
“What do you mean No? Can’t you even tell me what This is?” she pointed to the hologram- the image was of a navi-like figure in black armor. The armor was lighter towards the chest, where the navi wore an orange vest- orange boots, and gloves were also present. From its black-and-orange helmet a jet of long red hair fell down over its back, concealing the clear V-shaped sword strapped there. Its entire body was lined and dotted by purple bumps and crags, symbolic of bug fragments- its corrupted data flickered from time to time; soulless red eyes stared at Makoto, contemplating.
Meijin said nothing. “Is this what you wanted to show me earlier?” she went on. Again she was rewarded with silence.
“Say something, damn-it!!” she snapped.
“No.” Meijin replied, letting out a sigh.
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO? Are you saying you won’t even talk to me anymore?” She was furious- reminders of the reason their previous relationship failed rushed through her mind. He simply hadn’t been there for her, always too intent with his “research.” That was why she’d finally threw in the towel… so she was surprised when he had contacted her morning-
“No,” Meijin said, adjusting his shades as he interrupted her angry thoughts. “I wasn’t saying I wouldn’t talk to you, just answering your question.” he corrected her.
“… Oh.” realization hit her. “…Then answer my other questions. What is That… and what did you want to show me?” this was getting her nowhere.
“This,” Meijin said after a while, pulling up an image on a screen, “is what I wanted to show you earlier. And this,” he brought up a new window, and a second image, “is That.”
Statistics and graphs dotted the second image, alongside sprites of the false navi in question- the number “0” showed up highlighted at random intervals throughout the document, alongside the words “virus,” “neo,” and “change.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah,” Meijin continued, pulling up two chairs for them. Makoto sat down next to him as he opened his mouth to speak.
“But what is it?” she interrupted him before he could say a word.
Rolling his eyes he said what he’d been preparing to say before the cut-off. “What I’d called you up to look at this morning was this.” he drew her attention to the first window. “That other ‘project’ can wait until later, but this. This is much more important.”
The screen showed a dome made of data, alongside images of strange battle-chips.
“What is it?” Makoto asked with interest.
“Something I need your help with.” Meijin replied.
***0101010101001
“What?” Mugen’s jaw dropped.
Smiling, the toothy navi leapt over Mugen’s head and landed crouching in front of him. “You sure say ‘what’ a lot,” Mugen said to Mugen.
“Huh?”
“What the hell do you mean ‘huh’!?” Mugen sputtered, teeth flashing. “Don’t you have something more important to say?”
“What?” Mugen asked blankly.
“Damn,” a fourth Mugen spat, leaping to join the pair. “This guy must be the dumb one.” His eyes were red and untamed.
“What is dumb really?” the long-haired Mugen yawned, stretching as he strolled over to join the rapidly multiplying group. The red-eyed Mugen glared at him.
“Dumb is this,” the smiling Mugen knocked his fist against long-haired Mugen’s head, pointing to the Mugen.
“This is starting to get confusing…” Mugen trailed.
“What?” the other three Mugen answered in unison. Mugen sweatdropped.
“I see what you mean.” a voice from above caught the original Mugen’s attention, and he raised his head to look at the source.
“Up here.” the black-clad Mugen called down from where he hung upside-down in the air- his black overcoat barely stood out against the “sky.” His face was serious.
“How many of me are there?” Mugen raised an eyebrow, counting on one hand.
“As many as you can imagine,” Grinning Mugen leapt down to pat Mugen on the shoulder.
“Huh?”
“We are you. You called us into existence to fill a void… to help you deal with yourself.” Black-clad Mugen added seriously.
“But what are you?” thunder clashed in Mugen’s mind as he asked this. Red-eyed Mugen stepped forward menacingly, shoving Mugen back.
“I thought we established that,” he trailed angrily, glaring at Mugen. He considered him for a moment, then turned back to his comrades. “Hey Jacket, you sure this is the original?”
The black-clad Mugen stared sternly at Red-eyes. “Yes.”
Red-eyes gave a menacing smirk. “Good,” he said, cracking his knuckles. “I’ve been aching for a good fight!”
“What? I don’t understand…” Mugen’s voice trembled as Red-eyes drew near him.
“Damn, like I said before…” Grin chuckled, stopping Mugen from behind. “Use ‘what’ less man.” Mugen’s eyes widened.
“But what are you-” Grin cut him off, covering his mouth.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. What did I say about using ‘what’ so often?” Mugen’s eyes watered as Grin dragged him closer to Red.
Red eyed him evilly, Jacket sighed dramatically. Long-hair ignored the moment, examining his nails.
“You want to win against Forte right?” Jacket muttered as Red placed a hand on Mugen’s symbol, the picture of two green lines slashing into each other in the shape of an X.
Mugen nodded, mouth muffled.
“Good!” Red smiled, pushing down with all his might on Mugen’s symbol- dark green energy traveled down his arm, while a lighter green energy traveled up from Mugen’s symbol. The two greens converged in the center, and with a loud flash the two navis vanished. Sulfurous smoke and scorch marks were all that was left behind.
The white-haired Mugen look-alike yawned. “I thought that it would be more dramatic,” he sighed. Jacket glared at him, eyes narrowing.
“Be patient, Angst.”

Wow! This fic is pretty funny (even though certain parts aren't supposed to be). What's the deal with that Mugen character getting taken over by himself? That's a little odd. This fic has parts that are really gloomy- is that intended?
Anyways, great fic! Can't wait for an update! _________________ The stars are projectors, man. Projecting our lives down to this planet Earth.

Chapter 17- “I, My, Me, Mine!”
Raucous laughter sent cold vibrations down Mugen’s spine as he hung limply, then, the fire arrived.
“Stop it.” the voice was terse, tense, as it addressed the cloaked navi.
“What was that?” Forte teased. “Growing a spine are we?”
“I said shut up.”
“And what are you going to do about it? You’re helplessly trapped in my clutches. You know it. I know it. There’s no way you’re getting out of my reach unless you tear your own arm off.
“That’s true. No way out short of tearing my own arm off. You have me trapped so that I can’t escape without losing my arm, your grip is so tight,” his voice was low, contemplative on all but the last part- on that he nearly taunted.
“But what, pray tell would you do if I took your option?”
This threw him. Forte took a step back in midair (a tricky feat), taking another wide-eyed look at the seemingly-catatonic navi.
“What?” Forte held him up for a better view- the navi’s eyes were red.
“What was it someone was saying about ‘what’ earlier?” he smirked.
The sickening sound of tearing flesh and bone- Rock’s heart skipped a beat as Mugen skidded near him, free from Forte’s grip.
“Are you just gonna’ stand there?” red pixels streamed from Mugen’s torso as he turned to meets Rock’s stare with a mixed glare/smirk.
“Or are you gonna’ do something about it?”
***
“Ah, I see. So this should…” Meijin and Makoto conversed, hard at work on their side of the plan, as elsewhere Tesla and Charlie were working on theirs.
***
Rock stared at Mugen… at least it looked like him. Something was different… he shook off the thought. Just the same old random Mugen.
“Okay, I’ll try and pull my own weight, but I’m not sure what I can do against that.” Rockman readied his buster. He’d give it a shot, battle chips or no battle chips.
“About time you did something outside of standing there- thought you were dead,” Mugen growled, then smiled.
“Let’s attack him together then!” Mugen sneered, facemask sliding up.
“RIGHT!” Rock raised his buster-arm.
“NOW!” Mugen and Rockman flew at Forte.
***
“No… where is it?” Shuuko’s voice was frantic as she searched. Where was the Science Bureau?
As she ran she fumbled over something in her pocket.
“Aquaman, I need a map… Aquaman?” the screen showed static. “Aquaman!?”
“Kouryuu!!”
“Eh?” Shuuko turned her head towards the sound of the familiar voice.
Turning a corner she came in sight of an odd sight- a man dressed in priest garb being pulled off some freak with antennae by a bearded boy. Her eyes met those of the boy.
“That weird kid from the party!”
“That blue-haired chick from before!!” they pointed at each other accusingly.
In the moment their guards were dropped Brightman saw his chance and took it.
“BRIGHT BEAM!!” the attack sped towards Shuuko. Fuujin’s eyes widened, his grip on his navi slackened, and he ran to intercept the blast.
“No!!” his back was to the blast, inches away. The ball of energy crashed into a back; Shuuko cried.
“Why did you do it?” Fuujin cried. “Why’d you protect me, Kouryuu?”
“Why wouldn‘t I?”
“Good point.”
Kouryuu slumped over Fuujin and Shuuko, pinning them in a heap. Brightman slowly stepped towards them, a wicked smirk on his face.
***
The rain-streaked building’s side was slick, but Rock’s feet clung to it strongly all the same as he rushed towards Forte.
“Rock BUSTER!” a close-range blast whizzed between Forte’s ears, causing them to ring slightly.
“Come to me!” Mugen called, stretching his arm out towards where his sword lay. With a flash the sword transformed into two crescents of light and flew towards him, landing crisscross on his only good arm (his right one). With a flick of the wrist he sent them flying at Forte.
“Crisscross.” he smiled as they spun around like boomerangs, coming at Forte from behind- they cut into his back leaving a small gash. Forte rocked from the buster fire in front.
“Strange,” he thought out loud; he muttered to himself as he got to his feet. “That wont happen again.”
Mugen looked to Rockman. “More than useless,” he smirked
“Doing my best.” Rock shot back.
Mugen nodded as if to say ‘Keep it up!’ He then said “Keep it up!”
Rock raised his Buster, Mugen recalled his crescents, forming them into a sword.
“Will do,” Rockman replied, aim focused on Forte’s chest.
“What are you two muttering to yourselves?” Forte asked dryly.
“Nothing,” Rock charged his buster.
“… I see.”
Aiming to the ground, Rock fired a blast that sent him soaring up a wall- he ran across it nimbly. Mugen followed by ground, carrying his heavy-blade with difficulty. Leaping to the air, Mugen swung his blade at Forte, who ducked under him, kicking up a concrete slab as a shield. Buster-fire scattered the shield into a thousand pieces of rubble; rock-dust hung in the air briefly, causing the trio to cough.
“Maybe not the best choice of attack.” Forte trailed humorlessly, clearing his throat.
“I know that!” Rock glared back- he once again raised his fire-arm. Mugen readied his blade.
Kicking off against the ground Mugen tore towards Forte. He executed a feeble slash at his mid-section, which was easily blocked by one hand- Forte dragged his second fist against the ground, crumbling a rock in his palm. A vile sneer crossed his face as he ground the rock’s remains in his palm- he’d be sending more than just one ‘rock’ to its grave today, if he had his way.
“Smile!” Forte threw rock-dust into Mugen’s eyes, blinding him, only to be shot in the back of the head seconds later. He fell to one knee, clutching the back of his helmet- it steamed gently in the rain.
***
Charlie and Tesla stood on either side of Netto and Meiru as they ran.
“So, you say you know where Rockman is!?” Netto enthusiastically questioned Charlie. He nodded.
“Good! Then where?”
Tesla stopped running, pulling Charlie back by the collar. “Charlie, are you sure you know this?” she frowned.
“Yeah. After Gyroman dropped Meijin-san off at the ‘Bureau I sent him to do some recon. He told me he saw them.”
“And where is he now?” Meiru trailed skeptically.
“Right here, people!!!!!!!!” Netto and company jumped, looking to the sky.
“A warning for next time you do that, Gyroman…” Charlie said.
“Yes?” Gyroman cocked his head to one side.
“DON’T!” Gyroman slumped.
“… anyways,” Meiru changed the subject silently. The silence was interrupted as Roll popped up in hologram form on her shoulder.
“WHERE’S MY ROCK?” she wailed. Gyroman looked as if he was ready to faint.
“Er, well. Follow me,” his voice dropped on the words ‘follow me’ as he started walking. After a few minutes they arrived at a building.
“Through here,” Gyroman trailed dramatically.
Stepping into an elevator within the building Roll sighed. “This is taking way too long! Why do we have to go on an elevator!?” she complained.
With a ping the elevator doors swung open- top floor. Gyroman stepped out, leading. Roll glared at him.
“Why?”
Gyroman gestured over the rooftop with his arm, muttering blankly “you wanted a good view, right?”
Netto and Meiru leaned out over the ledge. “Rockman!?” Netto shouted, staring in shock at the battle below.
“Netto?” Rock looked up from his buster, dropping his guard.
“AREA STEAL, SLOT IN!!” Rock quickly teleported a half-step back, narrowly dodging Forte’s tackle.
Rock shook himself, rising to his feet. “Thanks Netto.” he held his head.
***
Fuujin groaned as he shifted Shuuko off his chest. “Get up, were leaving. Kouryuu, return,” he called his navi back to the PET.
Brightman looked at them humorously. “Where are you going?”
“Away from you,” Fuujin turned, supporting Shuuko on his shoulder and taking charge. For some reason Brightman didn’t scare him anymore.
Brightman laughed. “What’s that supposed to mean? You can’t just leave- we still have a fight to finish.”
“You won, okay? Tell that to your master.” Fuujin shifted Shuuko uncomfortably- the attack had caused her to faint. Brightman thought about this for a second.
“Okay,” he shrugged. “Guess I can let you guys go.”
Fuujin raised an eyebrow. “So easily? Okay.” he walked off nonchalantly. Who was he to question that insane navi’s convictions.
As he turned, Brightman eyed his back- he had other plans. “BRIGHT BEAM!” he attacked Fuujin’s unguarded back.
CLANG! The blast was reflected, hitting Brightman in the chest- he looked at it in confusion.
Enzan stepped out into clear view. “That was pretty ruthless,” he held his wounded shoulder. Blues crouched in front of Fuujin, shield raised and steaming from the blast.
“Blues, get rid of this pest.”
Blues smiled faintly. “As you wish, Enzan-sama.” and with that he charged forward, slashing a very surprised Brightman across the chest, and forcing him to plug out.
“Now… as to you two.” Enzan limped over to where they stood. “How are you?”
“In better condition than you,” Fuujin said matter-of-factly. Enzan coughed, then smiled.
“Right.”
Blues appeared at Enzan’s side, supporting him as he changed directions. “Let’s go.” the group walked off, leaving the wreckage behind them to find brand new wreckage.

Rockman: Wow! Were actually doing well against Forte!
Mugen: And who was it who stood still for three chapters, just watching in fear?
Rockman: HEY!
Mugen: Or was it four?
Rockman *glaring at Mugen: Okay, okay. Five. *Rock raises a finger. But seriously, thanks for the help.
Rockman: Yeah. You’re welcome.
Forte *smiling oddly: It’s not over yet. I’ve still got an ace up my sleeve.
Rockman: Right. Hey, remind me never to invite you to play poker.
Netto *changing the subject: NEXT CHAPTER… something happens!
Mugen: No duh! Do you even know? _________________

Wow. Rather shocking! Your character lost an arm... you pulled it off without it being too gruesome, and that's good. I'm glad to see Rock doing something helpful for a change... why did he sit around staring for about ten chapters again? Interesting foreshadowing- I wonder where Aquaman is, if not in the PET.
Anyways, good chapter (keep it up, I guess). _________________ The stars are projectors, man. Projecting our lives down to this planet Earth.

Chapter 18: Where You At?
“The sky has gotten darker.” Aquaman ran through the streets, uncertain of where to go; above him the sky rumbled with thunder, dark clouds illuminated by brief flashes of lightning. As he barreled into an alley he toppled a pair of trash cans. Crying and rising to his feet he was met with a pair of voices.
“You lost? Puku, puku?”
“Shuuko?” Aquaman wept.
“No.” a low voice replied. Watching nervously, Aquaman saw a trio step out of the alley’s shadows. One was of medium build, and wore a diver’s uniform; he crossed his arms dismissively. Another was taller, but still fairly short. He wore an ice-blue hoodie with a big front pocket, and stood next to a smaller, hobbit-sized figure in a parka.
“Whoosh, whoosh?” Aquaman trembled.
The hobbit-sized navi whispered something into the human’s ear.
“Ah, I see Iceman.” the human took a step toward Aquaman, who cringed. “It’s okay,” Toru smiled, bending over to rub the water navi’s head. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
Aquaman choked back tears. “Really?”
“Really,” Toru smiled.
***
“Hikari-san, where are you?” Enzan spoke into his PET frantically.
Fuujin stared at him… he sounded really desperate.
“… Got it.” Enzan slipped his PET into his pocket and motioned for them to follow him and Blues. After a few minutes they came to an alley.
“Just on the other side,” Enzan said. Silently the group pushed through the darkened path, shifting trash cans aside as they went. A faint sound of battle echoed through the alley, growing louder with each step. From their place in the alley a faint crack of the street beyond was visible; As the reached the exit a blast seared the area beyond. As smoke cleared charred brick and scattered glass became visible, alongside a hole in the wall. A second later Rockman crashed into the rubble.
Shaking his head he got to his feet. He caught the groups movement out of the corner of his eye, and did a double-take.
“… Blues?”
“ROCKMAN? WHAT’S GOING ON DOWN THERE?” Netto yelled, “Get your head in the game!”
“I agree,” Mugen bared his teeth in a jagged smile, leaping back as he passed Rockman; he fired his Vulcan. “You really should stop spacing out.”
“Right!” Rock raised his buster, returning his attention to Forte- he just hoped that group knew enough not to get in their way.
***
Blues poked his head out the alley, taking in the battle- he quickly pulled it back in and turned to speak.
“Enzan-sama, should I go help?” Blues’ voice held a touch of excitement; Enzan shook his head.
“Let those two finish what they began.”
***
Eyes narrowly focused over the top of his buster, Rockman took aim.
“CHARGED SHOT!” the blast exploded from his buster, hitting the streetlight on Forte’s right. Metal screeched as the pole crashed down on Forte, taking a good portion of a nearby building with it.
“Yeah! That’s how you do it, Rock!” Roll cheered him on from Meiru’s shoulder- Meiru rolled her eyes.
“Sloppy,” Netto sighed, “but it works. Here’s something a bit more technical! Slot in! Airspin, WideBlade, TORNADO! Triple download!!”
A hovering puck appeared in front of Rock, and he jumped onto it as his right hand morphed into a WideBlade, and his left turned into a tornado-arm. Aiming the tornado-arm to the ground Rockman shot forward, swinging the blade up to catch Forte as he got to his feet.
“Pathetic…” Forte caught the blade in an iron grip, breaking it and throwing Rockman back- Rock’s fist streamed pixels as it regained its form. Forte sneered and stepped towards him.
“Through me first,” Rock stared at Mugen’s back as Forte’s path was blocked; Mugen held his blade aloft, tip pointed at Forte’s chest.
“That shouldn’t be too difficult.” Forte effortlessly shoved his fist through Mugen’s symbol, lifting him in the air. Closing his eyes in concentration, he paused for a second. Red and green lines of computer code traveled up his arm as he drained Mugen.
“Stop!” Rockman raised his buster, aiming at Forte’s head.
Forte teasingly considered him for a second, continuing what he was doing. Rockman gulped, tightening his grip on the buster barrel; he closed his eyes and fired. The blast grazed Forte’s cheek, and he rubbed it with his free hand. Pulling it away he looked down at red pixel remnant.
Mugen chuckled, red pixel remnant trickling down his chin from the edges of his mouth- Forte glared up at him.
“What’s so funny now?” his voice was tense.
“I can still feel her squirming inside you. She‘s not dead yet.”
On Forte’s face a glare of utter disgust was present; he tossed the bleach-haired navi aside, pulling back a pixel-stained hand. That was enough of that- he turned to face Rockman, one arm at his side, the other upturned and charging.
“We finish this.”
***
As Netto looked down on the battle his PET beeped. As he stared down at his screen he noticed others looking at theirs.
“This message is to all net-ops in the area with navis materialized in the real world,” Meijin Eguchi said, “please call back your navis to the PET within the next minute.”
“What!?” Netto yelled at his PET, “why should we do that?” With a crackle the message ended abruptly, leaving Netto wondering. He looked to Meiru; she shrugged.
Around town others recalled their navis, starting with Charlie. In mid-town Toru raised an eyebrow and pulled out his PET, plugging out all three water navis.
Blues set Enzan down. “Enzan-sama…”
“I know,” Enzan muttered, holding his aching head with one hand, and his Pet with the other. “Plug out.”
“… Yes Enzan-sama.”
“Netto-kun…” Rockman said into his COM link as he dodged Forte’s scattershot, “heard the announcement. When should I plug out?”
Netto stared glumly at his PET. Why’d Meijin order this? If they withdrew at the wrong time that would be it, Forte would win. He swallowed and gave his command, hoping it to be the right one. “on my signal.”
Rockman nodded, assessing the situation… he’d just have to keep from losing until then; he raised his buster, charging it, then released. Forte quickly dodged to his left, dropping low to the ground, and launching himself at Rock. Rock took a nervous step back, but stopped… or rather his movement was stopped. A cold pressure in the pit of his stomach told him to run, but he fought it back. Forte stood behind Rock, face emotionless.
“You seem… distracted.”
Rockman gulped, but his fear was quickly replaced by a sense of complacency. “No reason.” he grinned nervously. “Right Netto?”
“ON IT! Slasher, SLOT IN!”
Rockman dropped into Iaform, preparing for battojutsu.
***
As Rockman continued the fight Fuujin looked at the navi that lay before him, streaming data. What should he do? He didn’t know him, but… it just felt wrong to leave him there.
***
Screaming, Rockman quickly unsheathed his blade. Forte blocked it effortlessly, and tossed Rockman back. Rock got to his feet with a great effort, jumpsuit torn at the knee. Forte smiled and waved him on tauntingly.
***
Meijin’s finger hovered over the button. He looked to Makoto; she nodded. He pushed down.
“Dimensional Area, activate!”
Three satellite dishes outside the lab shot out beams as the process began. Starting from the center of town the domed shape of the area began, pushing itself over buildings as it spread. As it went, viruses dispersed into pixels and plugged out wherever it touched.
Netto stared out over the horizon, jaw dropped. He could see it coming, but still couldn’t believe his eyes. Just what it was, he had no clue… but it looked dangerous.
“Rockman, plug out.” Down on the battlefield Rock looked up at Netto questioningly, but obliged.
“RUNNING AWAY?!” Forte screamed, staring at where Rock had been, then looking up towards Netto and the others. “We’re not done yet human! If your navi runs like a coward, you’ll just have to fill in for him, I guess.” Forte smiled darkly, launching himself at Netto, cape fluttering in the hot battlefield air.
***
Fuujin looked towards the horizon, seeing the wall of data speeding towards them, then looked at the navi splayed out in front of him. He noted how everything that touched the wall reacted, and made a quick decision.
***
Cringing, Netto took a step back; Forte was in his face now, ready to strike. Flashing before his eyes, Netto contemplated his life, sure it would be over momentarily. Forte sneered… and was suddenly hit by a wall of light! Cursing, he fought against the dimensional wall as it pushed him away, but to no effect. Gasping, Netto felt the area pass over his body. In a blink the area had finished surrounding the city, and left Forte outside its borders. He punched and kicked at the barrier, but it was to little effect.
***
Meijin sighed, and slumped in his chair- Finally it was done. Countless hours of research and design had not gone to waste. Drifting off, he felt a tap on his shoulder. Opening his eyes a crack, he looked groggily at Makoto.
“Hmmm?”
“Shouldn’t we, I don’t know, call them or something?”
Meijin stood up, stretching. “No rest for the weary, eh Makoto? Just like old times.” He smiled and sauntered off to alert the area of the situation, leaving Makoto wondering.
***
Hours passed, and slowly net battlers from around the area began arriving outside the doors of the Science Bureau, eager for more answers. The murmur among the crowds was near-deafening, the crowd shifting and writhing like a snake, tense, but ready to strike. It was nearing dawn when Netto arrived at the main gate, company trailing behind. He skated madly towards the crowd, yelling at the top of his lungs for them to part.
“Hikari-san!” Netto spun back to pout at Enzan, shooting him a uncertain look. “Let’s take another entrance! Also…”
“What?” Netto stared at Enzan. “What is it?”
“We’ve got to let the others catch up.” Enzan replied bluntly.
“Oh, right,” Netto said, slouching forward in embarrassment. All that had happened in the last 24 hours had really been taxing, mentally and physically. His limbs felt like lead, but he didn’t want to stop until he had answers, and a battle plan. Earlier, he’d nearly… Rockman had nearly…
“Netto!” Meiru called, interrupting his thoughts. “Let’s use the employee entrance.”
Netto glanced at the group behind her. They all tired too…Tesla, with her tattered wedding dress, Shuuko unconscious, Enzan barely able to stand. Toru had joined the group as well, and led a very distraught looking Higure by the hand.
Netto nodded, fumbling in his pocket for the Science Bureau guest ID card his father had given him. Retracting his skates he slowly led them towards a back entrance, carefully passing by the crowd without drawing any attention.
As they entered the building they were greeted by two scientists. One had short red hair worn in a bowl-cut. He wore silver-framed glasses, and was slightly taller than Charlie. The other was short, possibly an intern, and wore a lab-coat half opened. His collar was undone, and a blue sweater was visible beneath the coat. He was slightly taller than Enzan, and wore his black hair slicked back, and parted to both sides.
“Follow us!” the second scientist stated, leading the group to a room with two long orange couches positioned against the West and East walls, with a maple table in the center of the room, surrounded by fairly comfortable brown padded chairs. Sighing, Charlie and Toru slumped into their chairs, Higure sitting with his back against the back of Charlie’s chair. Wobbling, Fuujin laid Shuuko down on one of the couches, sitting apprehensively beside her for a second. His eyes drooped slowly as he put the closeness out of his mind. Muttering something, he drifted off to a well-deserved sleep. So much had happened, a little rest wouldn’t hurt, would it? As the others thought and did the same Netto paced the room. He just couldn’t stop so soon. He’d been… he didn’t want to say.
“Netto?” Meiru mumbled sleepily as Netto paced past her. “You must… rest.” Netto smiled at Meiru. Soon, he thought, turning towards the door. Right after talking to those scientists.

Love you're literay techniques, you're writing style.
Everything about this screams "awesome" to me. I love how you write and it's not too dry, like my stuff.
I can't wait until the next chapter! _________________ Though some would contest the point that the words I have spoken mean naught, I choose to believe that the words I do speak will reach the souls of all those who choose to internalize their message. A decent chapter. It seems to be wrapping up. I liked how you brought Toru back into the story, and how Meijin is being slightly evasive with Makoto. You're getting a better handle on her personality now, and that's good.
Can't wait to read the next chapter! _________________ The stars are projectors, man. Projecting our lives down to this planet Earth.

I'd like to make a slight clarification to the time-line this story follows, as I noticed a problem in the continuity. This fic is set in a post-Battle Network 6, though without the system of crosses. In otherwords, all that happened was Netto moving, and taking on the respective enemies. This fic is only inspired from the anime, and not following any true timeline aside from the event mentioned in the next chapter I post, and some soul-unison chip data. Thus, after Netto returns home the fic becomes AU. This works on the point that there will be no cross-fusion found in the following chapters, though future seasons may dictate otherwise. Netto's comment about dimensional areas brought on this clarification.
From here on in the fic is taking solely from the game's timelines, so characters met in seasons beyond the first and second will only know Netto if he met them in-game.
I apologize for my error. The next chapter should be up in 2-3 days. _________________

Chapter 19: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Stronger!
Taking a step quietly out the door of the lounge Netto extracted his PET from his pocket; looking down at it he brought up the holographic touch-screen- a moment later Rock appeared on his shoulder.
“What’s up, Netto-kun?” he tilted his head at Netto, a puzzled look on his face. Netto smiled at his navi, noting the wear from the last battle, still present on his frame. Dust and skid marks sullied the normally pristine blue jump-suit he usually wore, and a tear in the fabric was visible just over the left knee.
“Rockman, could you bring up the phone function,” Netto asked, a tinge of nervousness discernable in his voice- a moment later Rockman cheerily brought it up. Netto slumped wearily against the wall of the darkened bureau hallway, resting his eyes for a second. A moment of worry crossed his mind, how maybe, just maybe he couldn‘t- NO! he told himself, closing his eyes in meditation for a moment- I will not give up that easily. Sliding his back up against the wall, he corrected his posture, and his composure.
“Rockman, dial up papa.” a series of beeps, and a second later, the PET’s intercom system rang, in a mock-20th century way; a brief smile parted his lips at the thought of such a retro novelty, and then a voice came on the other side.
“Hello, who is this?” Yuuichirou Hikari questioned hastily, his voice giving off a tense vibe.
“Papa,” Netto spoke calmly, masking his inner worries, “It’s Netto. Could I… talk with you and your scientists for a bit?”
Yuuichirou bit his lip on the other side of the conversation, staring at the others in the room he was in; he sat at the head of a large circular mahogany table around which were seated 4 other men, and a woman- he surveyed their expressions briefly before turning back to the phone. A red rectangle flashed next to the words “hold” on the machine- he knew he’d have to make this quick, so as to get back to the call he’d suspended. And it was important.
“Netto, I have to make this quick: meet me in lab 204 in 30 minutes,” he covered the mouthpiece and whispered a brief apology to the other in the room, “Yes! See you then,” he smiled and hung up.
Netto stared down bleakly at his PET screen, feeling as if he’d just been handled by his father. If the conversation was brief though, at least he’d gotten a result… and results were what he needed now, not what he’d been getting.
Sighing, he set his PET alarm for twenty minutes, and stepped back into the lounge for a short nap.
Twenty-five minutes later he awoke to Rockman’s voice. Looking around sluggishly, he quickly surveyed the room: Toru on a couch by the east wall, Charlie in a chair in the center, Tesla on his lap, Enzan draped oddly over another chair, back splayed over both armrests horizontally. Shuuko and Fuujin lay close together on the couch against the west wall, with Meiru resting serenely in the chair to his left- he paused for a second, watching her rest, then forced himself from the chair.
After a few minutes walking Netto came to lab 204. As he knocked on the door, he noted the large window beside it. Something about it intrigued him, and taking a step away, he peered through, cupping his hand over his eyes to reduce the glare- within, he saw two tables covered with strange schematics, and a trio of large, person-sized glass tubes emitting a low glow; within one, a murky silhouette stood. Squinting, he tried to get a better look- a sudden voice behind him made him jump.
“Eh!? Meijin-san?”
“No need for the ‘san’, Netto. You’re late enough as it is.”
Netto nodded, and followed Meijin into the lab without a second word.
*** morning
As the first dull rays of morning touched down on Fuujin‘s brow, he opened his eyes, stretching slightly. A faint sound of breathing beside him drew his attention, and looking down he laid eyes on Shuuko. For a moment he let his mind wander, and a dumb grin spread over his face- just as quickly the smile was replaced with something else. Concern. Leaning forward he pulled out his PET.
“Kouryuu… how is he?” Fuujin’s smile faded from his face as he stared down at the hazy screen. Kouryuu bit his lip as he looked at the navi on the floor.
“Not well, I’m afraid.”
“I see…” Fuujin bowed his head, resting in thought for a second.
Within the PET Kouryuu sat, cross-legged, a thin trail of smoke issuing from his mouth; he held his cigarette lightly in one hand, and frowning slightly, he beckoned towards Mugen.
“What should we-”
The sound of a chip clicking into the PET silenced him, and he looked down moodily at the palm of his hand; it glowed with healing energy. Getting up slowly, he moved until he was standing over the unconscious navi- Fuujin closed his eyes tightly as Kouryuu prepared to issue a healing shock.
Opening her eyes groggily, Shuuko awoke- she stared blearily at Fuujin’s back, his bowed head. He looked so… sad somehow. She opened her mouth to say something, then stopped, looking around self-consciously; she had no idea where they were.
“Fuu-” she started rising from the seat- he spun around in shock, not thinking to conceal the look on his face!
“Jin.” she finished, frowning at the ground. The look on his face had… shocked her. So full of sadness, and yet… and yet-
“Sh-Shuuko, was it?” he stuttered slightly, forcing a smile.
She nodded without lifting her head- in her mind flashed that moment, the flash of light, sparks flying, when that man had been silhouetted before her. She shifted nervously, pushing down on one foot with another.
“Why are… why is it so tense around here?” he laughed weakly.
“I’m sorry!” she interrupted boldly, jaw trembling.
“Come again?”
“I’m sorry, for earlier. Your navi… he must’ve been damaged protecting me. It’s all my fau-”
“Shhh,” Fuujin whispered into a finger, “don’t get so worked up about it. Not your fault.” his smile grew, as did his nerve. “Don’t blame you, this lies on my shoulders. And my navi wasn’t-”
A faint beeping from across the room derailed his train of thought, and they both looked over towards a boy in a blue hoodie. Suddenly, three navis appeared on top of the boy’s head, pulling at his hair. The sheer randomness of this made Shuuko laugh, and looking at her with a tinge of concern, Fuujin joined in. The boy shifted, swatting at the holograms uselessly as he sat straight up.
Shuuko suddenly stopped laughing, rushing over to the boy’s side- Fuujin stared, uncertain of what to make of this change in mood. Slowly, he followed her over to where the boy sat, listening with care to her adulations, her coos, her ahs.
“Aquaman! There you are, where were you!?”
Fuujin smiled at the reuniting of navi and net-op, basking in the memory of when he’d gotten back his own. That feeling, so-”
Sounds of people moving, and waking up around the room stopped him, and turning to his right he caught sight of Enzan. There he sat, slung carelessly over the sides of the chair, like some human seat-cover, snoring… but what was with his leg? Looking from Enzan to the others, he caught sight of Charlie, and sensed they were on the same page.
“Sir,” he said, rushing over to the unfamiliar man.
“Charlie.”
“Alright, Charlie. What do you think we should do about,” he paused, and jerked his thumb back at Enzan. Charlie’s gaze narrowed to the lone leg, bent at an odd angle.
“It could just be the seat, and how he’s sitting,” Tesla ventured, but Charlie dismissed this instantly. No, it had to be something worse. He’d have to rise to the occasion.
Snapping to attention, Charlie began issuing orders, calls to Higure to fetch a doctor, to Fuujin to help him with Enzan, to Shuuko and Toru too. In the bluster to get in control of the situation, Tesla stepped back, agape. And since she was the only one awake who was watching, she wasn’t busy in the scuffle of following orders, she was the first to notice Enzan open his eyes.
“Ne-Netto!?” Enzan called, half-asleep. Stopping what he was doing, Fuujin turned to talk to Enzan.
“It’s okay, you’ll be alright.” he said coaxingly.
“But! Where is Netto!?”
Looking around uncertainly, Fuujin finally realized it.
“Netto’s gone,” Meiru replied from across the room, “he left last night to look into something.”
Hearing this, Enzan calmed down slightly. “Good, he’s safe.”
“As safe as we’re gonna’ be here, huh?”
Enzan stared at Higure, unsure of how to react. “Um, yes.” Without a warning, he suddenly cried out in pain! Looking down at his feet, he caught sight of Charlie.
“What are you doING!?” on the ‘ing’ he raised his voice in pain.
“Trying to move you, to get help.”
“But I’m fine!” Enzan insisted, grasping the chair to keep from being pulled off. A door clicked open, and Netto, Meijin, and Yuuichirou Hikari stepped in.
Netto took a sip of his steaming cup of coffee, then asked “what’s going on?”
Charlie let go of Enzan’s collar, walking over to the trio, and bowing. “Dr. Hikari, I need you to look at this boy’s leg.”
Yuuichirou raised an eyebrow, but walked over, crouching next to Enzan. He stared at the leg for a moment.
“So, what do you think?” Charlie asked.
“Well first off,” Yuuichirou muttered, “I’m not that kind of doctor.” Charlie sweat dropped. “And secondly, he looks fine.”
“That was what I was trying to tell them,” Enzan replied smugly, craning his neck to look over Yuuichirou’s shoulder. “Glad you could join us, Hikari-san.”
“Netto!?” Meiru rushed to hug the boy, nearly making him spill his coffee- he wrapped one arm around the girl, the other preoccupied with handling the paper cup.
“A… little help,” he managed to squeak, as the girl hugged him tightly.
“Sure,” Meijin replied, walking smoothly past Netto, snagging the cup from his grasp as he passed. Netto stared, wide-eyed at him.
“Meijin-san!?”
“No need for the ‘san’… and no need for this either,” he waved the cup tryingly in front of Netto’s face.
“Meiru,” Netto pleaded, getting her to let go. Dusting off his sleeves self-consciously, Netto turned back towards the group.
“I… no, we, have some important things to tell you all.” he addressed them calmly.
_____________
Enzan: News, huh?
Higure: Hey! That’s my line!
Enzan: Pfht.
Higure: What!? What’s that supposed to mean?
Enzan *addressing someone else*: So, what do you think this thing he has to tell us will be?
Toru: No clue, but it should be important.
Rockman: Next time on Defying the Voice of the King- Forget me not!
Group: We certainly won’t! _________________

Decent chapter- I like how Netto's PET had a ring tone. I could feel a definite mood going on in this chapter, and am interested where it will go.
Keep it up! _________________ The stars are projectors, man. Projecting our lives down to this planet Earth.

After waiting for so long (and it was worth the wait) I know that I'll have to wait to see the conclusion of this one too! Darn cliff-hangers! _________________ Though some would contest the point that the words I have spoken mean naught, I choose to believe that the words I do speak will reach the souls of all those who choose to internalize their message. Sorry for the delay, but I've been busy with college.

Chapter 20: Have It All.
"Tch," Forte cursed, clenching his fist as he looked down at the barrier below; the glassy expanse shimmered pristinely in the morning sunlight. The dark clouds had moved on hours ago, but he really didn't see a problem with that. He'd have his say, no matter the mood or setting. His eyes narrowed as he looked down on the barrier once more, and he thrust his fist into it half-heartedly; not a budge, like each time before. It seemed rather strong, but he'd put an end to that.
He gave a wry smile as the scene faded to black.
***
"So that's what's going on," Netto finished silently, bowing his head for a second; he brought it up a second later, putting up a weak smile. "We do have a plan though."
The others in the room looked less than thrilled.
"So what you're telling me," Enzan started, "is that as it stands now, Forte seems unbeatable."
"Yeah, pretty much."
"Do we even know his motivation? If we knew that, then maybe..."
"Nope, not a clue."
"The basic death-to-all-humans jive?" Charlie ventured. Enzan shot him a look that said just how stupid he thought he was; Charlie raised an eyebrow, prepared to question it when Netto spoke up.
"Maybe."
Enzan stared at him blankly. "You can't be serious."
"Regardless," Netto changed the subject uncomfortably, "what we do know is that for now the dimensional area seems to be keeping him out. You all understand that, right?"
The group nodded in unison, and Netto continued.
"Good. So for now we don't need to worry too much about that. Currently, our worries should be on how we'll respond when he does."
Tohru and Enzan shot him a blank look, and replied in unison "... isn't that the same thing?"
"Don't talk when I'm talking!" they spun to face each other, eyes narrowed.
"No, you!" Tohru yelled.
"Hush up. It's not like you're important in our planning anyways!"
"People!" Higure shouted over the two boys. "Calm down. Fighting amongst ourselves won't get a thing accomplished, huh?" They spun to shoot him a death look, and he inched away nervously.
"ANYWAYS!..." Netto spoke over the entire room, "Papa and Meijin are currently working with others on our secret weapon, so rest assured."
"Rest assured? Rest assured!? How are we supposed to-!?"
"Calm down, Enzan-kun!" Meiru interrupted, eyes watering. "Netto has a plan! Everything will be fine!"
"Meiru-chan..."
"Everything will be fine, right Netto?!?"
"... Yes," he nodded weakly.
"Right!" Yuuichirou interrupted, "So we all know what we have to do, yes?"
"No."
"Exactly," Yuuichirou wandered off, leaving everyone wondering.
"Oh-kay!" Netto said, clapping his hands nervously. "Well I'm going for a walk." Everyone stared at him as he stepped out the door.
"Wonder what has gotten into him?" Enzan muttered; Meiru stared at him glumly, then looked wishingly towards the door.
"..." Meiru frowned.
***
Striding silently away, Netto pulled out his PET, and flipped a button on the side.
"-other thing!" the sound blared as Netto smiled down at Rockman; he looked around for a second before realizing he wasn't muted anymore. "Don't ever do that again," he said, glaring up at Netto.
"So, how've you been Rockman?"
"How have I been? I have been on mute, Netto. Do you have any idea how infuria-"
"Yes, Rockman,” Netto interrupted with muted reply. "And I'm very sorry I had to do that... but something serious came up."
"And you couldn't LET ME have a say?!"
"Rockman, you were simply screaming too loud." Netto frowned. Rockman paused, finger arced in mid-thought.
"I was... screaming? When was I...?"
"I didn't let them know about it, Rockman," Netto said through tears. "I just couldn't!"
"... Netto-kun."
Netto brushed his sleeve across his face, wiping away the tears.. "We'll fight him... but I don't think...-"
"We'll win." Rockman interrupted, a fire in his eyes. He clenched his fist. "We'll do it, just like we always do."
"I hope you're right," Netto trailed, thoughts elsewhere.
***
"Listen, Enzan..." Tohru broke the silence. "About our argument earlier-"
"I'm sorry," Enzan cut him off, "I had no right. Megane-san was right..."
"Mega nee-san?" Tohru raised an eyebrow.
"The... guy with glasses. Didn't catch his name." Enzan frowned uncertainly.
"OH!" Tohru chortled, "I thought you meant mega NEE-san!"
"... no. No Mega-sister." Enzan replied, jaw clamped, taking all the control he could muster not to throw something.
“Anyways,” Tohru said through a cushion, “apology accepted. Now…” he squirmed under the weight, “WILL YOU GET OFF ME!”
***
“So… how have you been, Shuuko-san?”
Shuuko looked up from her PET absentmindedly, glancing at Meiru. “I’ve been fine, but him…” she looked towards Fuujin, “he seems worse-off. He’s been worrying for a while now. I think I’m the cause…”
“Oh, Shuuko. Don’t think that!” Meiru comforted Shuuko, patting her on the back. “Fuujin’s just got other things on his mind. But you know…” a mischievous smile drew over Meiru’s face, “if you really want to make things better, you can go over and talk to him. He was the one who saved you, after all.”
Shuuko nodded, rushing over to Fuujin’s side.
***
“Fresh air. It does the body good,” Charlie inhaled deeply, puffing out his chest like the manly man he thought he was. Tesla nodded, enjoying the view. A cool breeze blew back her hair, and she smiled.
In the distance the sun was setting, painting the surface of the dimensional area with vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and green; a flock of birds fluttered near the barrier, trying to pass through. On the ground below a faint mist trailed, the coldness of the night fast approaching. Tesla took it all in, breathing a sigh that could have meant a great number of things. Relief, in that the day was soon to be over. Stress, that the day had gone too fast, with little gained or lost; a feeling of unease that things would go bad soon. Relaxation, that something so beautiful could exist on the precipice of disaster.
“Charlie, what do you think will happen to us?”
Charlie turned to smile at her. “Something wonderful, babe. Something wonderful.”
***
In the sky to the East, lightning crackled over the horizon as dense black clouds moved slowly closer to the barrier, blocking out the sky. With them came an aura of darkness, and a sense of foreboding. Also, there was a pretty wicked breeze.
Looking up to the sky, Netto saw it coming, and instantly wished he was somewhere else.
“No! Not so soon! This can’t be good,” he muttered, pocketing his PET and running to the Science Bureau. As he ran, a foul wind kicked up.
Looking to the sky, Charlie knew it was coming before Tesla. He drew her close. “We have to get inside!” he shouted.
“Why!?”
“Because,” Charlie replied.
***
“Tornado.” Forte smiled blithely. “This should be fun!” _________________
