Ryusei no Rockman 02: First Contact talk-back (spoilers)

Points of interest...

- For some reason, I anticipated something like this happening: the intro was slightly redone. Specifically, once Subaru transforms into Rockman, the silhouetted characters in the background now scroll across the screen individually, and they're MUCH clearer. Begin the speculation. (The first figure has obvious bird wings. The next one is Oxfire. The third is pinkish with a snake-like lower body. The fourth has a very wide lower body with detachable hands; one looks like it uses water and the other fire. Then we have the presumed "Gemini" twin characters. Finally, the assumed Roll with a blurred body.)

- The episode reuses footage from the previous episode before and after the title card. First, it shows the three satellites, the city, and even the navi girl preparing a meal. Then the title card, and then we pick up with Subaru opening the door and meeting Luna.

- Luna's hair wiggles when she moves her head, or even when she just barely flinches at all. It's a nice touch; reminds you that that big chunk of blonde back there IS still hair.

- The dorky Max-wannabe, Kizamaro, is introduced in this episode. I do not like him and I want him to not exist.

- Gonta is also introduced. God, Subaru has ugly friends. And they're pretty mean, too. Gonta knocks Subaru down and sits on him while Luna and Kizamaro just sorta... stare and smile. Talk about peer pressure. Anyway, Luna has a Leo Transer (unless it's supposed to be pink, and then I dunno who that represents). Kizamaro's is a Pegasus and Gonta's is a Dragon.

- This artist has done regular work for Stream and Beast, but he seems to be having a lot of problems with profile views in this episode. I'll let you be the judge.

- A new character that works with Mamoru at the space station is introduced, but I dunno his name. (I'm watching this without sound right now. I'm at work.) He's got curly, somewhat girly, hair and bags under his eyes, and a general look of awkwardness. For some reason, I see him evolving into a villain. He has a Dragon Transer, as does Mamoru. Oh, and Mamoru has dark brown hair, whereas he has really bright red hair in the intro sequence.

- Subaru rides a really goofy looking bike, complete with headlight.

- War-Rock finally appears in his normal shape (and not a glowy figure with beasty eyes). He fights a bird FM, but it stays glowy. They only appear like shapes to Subaru while viewing their battle through the Visualizer. After a powerful attack, there's a huge explosion of light directly on Subaru. You see Subaru as Rockman in a silhouette before the camera shows him again, his normal human shape, laying on the ground unconscious. Then the episode ends.

Oh my god the opening has already grown on me XD (when I downloaded it as an MP3 I realised just how cool that music is XD I still dislike the opening art however, except the scene where the background rapidly moves away from city to earth to space to solar system).

Things ARE going slow... by the time I thought finally something was happening Warrock, or whatever he's called collided with Subaru and then the episode was finished O__o;;

Also, I don't think I like the character ensemble... I mean... at least Meiru looked pretty likeable as a girl, but this girl is just... weird and I totally don't like her (that she's class rep makes it even harder because she reminds me of Yukihira Ayaka from Negima >___> Oh yes, I hate her so much). And Dekao was kind of okay... Yaito was funny, and I guess Tohru really wasn't bad either, except that he was just... a tad boring... The characters really don't appeal astetics wise... The boy genius thing is also pretty obvious... tho I think they did a much better job with Kazuma from Detective Academy Q... in fact... I can't think of any anime that has such a dislikeable main characters O___o;; (I mean design wise of course).

Oh yeah, at one point (the beginning of that sequence with the guy who could use some serious coffee) I thought Netto was talking, when you didn't see Subaru's face :p kinda weird, but it was of course just Subaru :]

They better start using some kickass battle music soon!!! >__> (I did like that piano track they played before Subaru saw that battle of squares and circles :p

I like the scrolling to the OP only due to the fact that we can see some of the FMs better...but I kinda preferred the original scene. As far as seeing what they really look like, Heatman's final CoroCoro scan at Atomic Fire has a clear look at Cygnus, OxFire, and the serpent girl I'm calling Ophiuchus, plus two others I have no clue at what they are. Other than a Mr. Prog cosplaying as a Gyroman wannabe. Now that we can see the water thing clearly also has a fire arm, it kinda looks like a scale, balancing the elemental arms. Libra, anyone?

I'm not sure if the Dex-like kid, (Gonta is it?), is definitely voiced by Sparkman's seiyuu, but all I imagined was him telling Subaru "You're trash! Trash that fights like trash!" I agree with the general consensus that, other than Subaru, these character designs are pretty unappealing. Hopefully cooler humans will show, otherwise all my attention is going toward the FMs.

I dunno about that new creepy guy either. Kirisaki's distant relative or something like that? He's just...odd right now. I hope the future battles aren't done in radiowaves all the time! The music played there is growing on me as something that might be pretty cool. But please, more actual character battles over circle and rectangle killing each other! That explosion at the end was very intense and great eye candy. Not a bad episode, since they're putting the effort in to make it seem like we're just getting full eps split in two, rather than one crammed-in 9 minute eppy. But here's to hoping things pick up the pace.

Which one is Cygnus from the AF scan? The bird? The wings don't match up all that well. That and Cygnus sounds more like a serpent name, but I should clarify by adding that I know very little about astrology, so take that with a grain of salt. (At least I had an edge with EXE; I have internet and computer knowledge... This star/radio crap is gonna throw me off big-time.)

You know, the FMs/navis/whatever the hell they are don't look all that great in the design catagory either. I'm pretty sure everyone except Subaru, his family, and Amachi have horrible designs in this series. You know all those discarded character designs we've seen for EXE and such? It seems like they're using those now for Ryusei. (They're discarded for a reason.)

But, again, we don't know all that much of Ryusei, and only two episodes have aired. I'm skeptical, but I'm not gonna give up on it just yet. (And I still think the games look fun.)

Just as with the last episode I am impressed, but the fight at the end bothered me a bit. Warrock managed to appear in solid form, why not his opponent? I don't understand Japanese so a lot of things I have to guess.


I really like Subaru as a character and even more so in this episode. Especially because some of the other characters don't look very interesting. Despite that, I personally like Kizamaro the best. Gonta looks so, well let's just say I liked Dex a whole lot better.

What were Luna, Kizamaro and Gonta doing to Subaru in the first part? I guess they were trying to help him but I am not sure. Also I can't really call this 'helping' what they did.

Mamoru looks nice but the first thing I noticed like already pointed out by Crimson Seiko was his brown hair. The music during Subaru's conversation sounded for me personally very good.

Subaru also seemed to made a realization later in the episode, but my lack of Japanese prevents me of really knowing what was going on. I guess Subaru realizes that he has to change his behavior and that there a people who care about him? Very likely I am completely wrong and I should have kept this to myselves.

The last part was the least exciting for me. I don't know really why, I just feel that these scenes could have been done better. (Stupid reasoning on my part, I know.) However the last scenes did have some very nice moments regarding visual effects.


I look forward to the next episode, I like it that they are progressing slowly. A nice change for me personally for what we had in Beast+.

Yeah, the bird is Cygnus. Or more precisely, in constellation terms, a swan. You said you had no volume on at work, but War Rock does call him Cygnus during their battle in this episode. My source for these guesses: Absolute Astronomy. While I like astronomy, I'd have no clue on some of these FMs without browsing this site. Been too long since I took that class in college. You're right that the OP version looks really off, because it is. The serpent girl's head looks off to me in the OP as well. Roll's mouth stands out even more too, since Subaru isn't blocking most of it in the new version. Probably just because they didn't have enough reference from the game yet or something? Or just the wrong person to do the OP sequence. Or is this whole issue with the characters maybe due to Inafune not having control?!! :/ You're probably on to something with that recycled bit.

That episode really did not endear me to Subaru's new 'friends' very much. Their designs looks bad, especially Gonta's, and they don't really seem that friendly either. At least the 'fight' between Subaru and Gonta was animated well.

Gripes aside, this was servicable. So, the constellations we now have are Cygnus, Taurus, Ophiuchus, Libra, and Gemini. Too bad Aquarius (my sign) isn't in there.

I think the music that was playing when Luna was dragging Subaru around was also an EXE remix, but I'm not entirely sure.

As for the battles, fear not! I am confident that once they get going from Subaru's perspective, they'll be more than CG graphics bouncing off of each other.

Another difference in the opening is that the other characters that flash by (Subaru's mother, father, cap guy, guitar girl, girl who looks like she's trying to shave her head, and Zenigata with a light on his head) are much clearer also. Or is that just the color difference?

I didn't like his friends much either. But honestly I don't think they will be very important aside from people to be there when he is at school. I'd think Subaru would hang out more with the guitar girl than them, since they will probably be out of the loop as far as the whole FM thing.

For some reason, the OP at that point is quite reddish on the transparent figures.

Amachi makes me happy, but the animation makes his face less cute for me and the voice acting was slightly different to last episode. Kizamaro sounds exactly like I imagined he would, but he sounds a little like Bubbleman oddly enough. Gonta was well...different at least but he has serious overbite problems.

Emo worker is weird, I mean why hold yourself like that everywhere? Put a jacket on or something you idiot!

More Amachi goodness, I like that guy (but never as much as Nenji). This episode will give me enough references for some fun art.

A cygnet is a baby swan as well, plus it's the part of the genus as the word Cygnus derives from Latin of course.

I liked the weird effect in the visualiser, where Cygnus and WarRock were turned into flying circles and squares. It made me laugh a little but was a nice touch as well. As for the end, well they're teasing us as we're not going to get to see Rockman properly for a fornight yet.

Not bad so far... I like the pace this is going at so far.

Gotta agree on Subaru's friends though. I like Luna, but the other two are kind of annoying so far. Hopefully once Subaru actually makes friends with them, they'll be better.

I really like Amachi though, hopefully he'll keep a main role.

I said this before, I'll say it again: the animation (not art quality) in this show is amazing. from the hair movements to the facial expressions to the fluid movements = WOO.

Argh. Cliffhanger. But at least they know how to leave you hanging, right? This would have been an awesome place to end a 20 minute episode. Sigh, we need more 20 minute episodes! :<

Still looking forward to more Ryuusei, I'm so glad people are still going to supply the RAWs! :D

Sadly most the supporting cast annoys me. The only one that doesn't is Subaru's Father's co-worker.:\

Now I see why Subaru isn't so crazy about his pals. Well Luna is alright, but I'd definately take Dekao over Gento(sp?) any day. =P

Not much to say about this episode; obviously the action will commence in the next one. At least I got to see War Rock in his non-shadow form. He kind of resembled a genie to me initially due to his lack of legs.

Luna's bouncy hair looks awesome, its as if it's got a mind of it's own, I also like her voice, it matches with her character well. Kizamaro sounds funny

I'd say out of Subaru and "friends", Subaru and Luna come as best design, then Kizamaro, then Gonta.

Bah, and these cliffhangers make me want to get the next episode as fast as possible.

Here's a question. Why do they all have transers if they don't have the visualizers to see them in action?

No matter how many times I watch that scene, I get all confused when the big guy shows up. @_@; Also, does anyone know how long it's been since Subaru's father disappeared in the anime? In the games [spoil:8ea9b03988]the story takes place three years after[/spoil:8ea9b03988] so I was wondering. :D
