Classic series, if I may say so myself.

I began with the original and managed to perfect it. The same applied for the second game, and I have good memories of working through the game to perfect it as well. The third had much of the allure of the second while retaining and/or expanding on themes presented in the first two games.

Much like the Spyro series (which Insomniac also created), the trilogy stands as the best. And much like the Spyro series, the second installment was of the highest quality, even though the third title comes a rather close second.

The characters were colorful, story intricate, and gameplay challenging enough to keep me occupied for hours on end. And hell, you blew *$!? up. Always a good outlet for stress.

Anything after the trilogy was markedly worse. Deadlocked was a good follow-up on the schemes of the main games, with extensions to the weapon and HP upgrade system, but my main gripe with it is that it took away the element that made defined it on the PS2--Ratchet and Clank is primarily meant as an adventure game, similar to that of Metroid or other games of its genre. The trilogy had the perfect balance of exploring large, treasure-stocked zones and tactical combats with enemies, either singly or in groups. The transition to a primarily combat-based game detracted from its flavor. Furthermore, the weapon upgrade system was taken and stretched FAR too much. I don't want to sit and play through arenas waiting for my minirocket launcher to advance to level 64. In the old games, advancing a level meant something. Here, it's just mostly a hop from one number to another.

I admit, Deadlocked was the last game I played in the series, and I plan to sell it off (since I've been too lazy to do so anyway.) It has much less of a replay value than its predecessors.

Oh yes, and who could forget about emitting noxious effluviums in your general direction?
