We saw this coming.

As is what happened with PS2, and with 360, Sony fails at supplying the demand again.

Some have said that this is partially a marketing move to get more hype for the system in the future. I don't feel this is the case. You don't launch a system right in time for the holidays and not be able to fill the extreme demand for the product. Even the price isn't a factor at this point.

I still am waiting for a year or so to pick mine up (provided the funds), so I'm in no rush. However, I'm merely pointing this out due to Sony's lack of economic intelligence.

Discuss. Razz

Oh VG Cats, you tell it like it is.

If Sony really is trying to increase hype for the system by purposefully reducing supply to increase demand, they're achieving practically the opposite effect. People are going to be LESS willing to buy a PS3 if they know they're not going to be able to get their hands on one. That just means they'll send more people over to buy the less expensive and more readily available Wii.

Am I upset? Not really. Am I surprised? Not at all. This is Sony at its finest.

Well according to estimates, that's 100,000 unlucky people who won't get Taledega Nights on Blu Ray! If they wouldn't have spent so much time getting dolls to come to life, rubic's cube's to play themselves, eggs to roll and doves to fly out of walls, maybe this wouldn't be an issue...

The marketing excuse does work to an extent. Knowing people who were marketing majors in college, yes, they do preach that crap even though you would think people would be smart enough to be so ticked off they'd boycott or wouldn't buy it or something, but it doesn't happen. But I've never thought marketing people to be that intelligent. If they are having trouble with things like backwards compatibility on some games, it would be to their benefit to delay a huge launch and to fix the problem so the system owners don't get angrier. Why would anyone want to pay more for a fix to that if they got one at launch? So, in a way, it is better that there are fewer consoles at launch.

At least in the case of GameStop, they are giving the pre-orderer's a little something extra. I've never been a pre-order myself, but at least they're trying to make up for the delay. And they did say they should be able to cover the orders before Christmas, so in a way, I believe that's important not to forget, since a good chunk of them might be Christmas gifts. Makes me curious to see what lines at stores like Best Buy or Circuit City will be since they're handing out tickets when the store opens that'll only guarantee you "a chance" at buying one. If there will only be like 3-5 per store, I can see the fights already. Having family members that worked part-time at Wal-Mart in the past, when X-Box 360 came out with their limited misjudged launch, there was a fight that broke out. Guns even got shown (not fired, thankfully) and management had to send everyone home, so nobody got a 360 on that launch day at that store. Scary, especially with younger kids trying to get the system, and pathetic on the part of those who so desperately wanted the stupid thing. Another reason why I personally want nothing to do with launch days and preorders. I get it when I get it, good enough for me.

This is the result of the PS3 shortage.

The marketing shortage really sounds plausible. Did you people already forget about the Tickle Me Elmos? Oh the horror of the Elmo rush...*shivers*

Dut to Sony cutting their launch numbers down to around 200,000 GameStops are only getting around 25% of their original number of PS3 units. So a lot of those people selling pre-orders on eBay are pretty much screwed. Not everybody who pre-ordered a PS3 is going to get one.

Sucks to be them.

*Looks at Cloud-kuns's findings* Holy Crap... :O Good thing I'm not getting one for a year or two. Way too expensive online and in stores.

PS3 shortage? Wow, people aren't going to be too happy about that. DX

But I bet even when they are cutting down on supplying, hardly anyone would buy it.(500 bucks plus games and extra stuff? No thanks Razz ) If anyone wants to buy it, then 45%(IMO) would wait one or so years before buying it, so they can get it when there are more and the price goes down. -.-

Sony's lack of intellegence strikes again.... :eyes:

lol I laugh at the PS3 RSX GPU (Its video card) currently my brother has a Video Card in his Computer (The ATI EAX1600PRO 512MB DDR2) superior to the PS3 GPU.

Quote:
from the PlayStation 3 camp today after an nVidia spokesperson was quoted in PlayStation Magazine saying that the RSX GPU is basically a slightly less powerful GeForce 7800.

anyway back on topic..

Man I thought that the PS3 would already have a shortage since they are only shipping One Million, but now since they are lowering the shipments, its going to make it harder to find a PS3 for those who want to buy it.

Oh and a little bit of information for those wondering why the PS3 will have a lack of shipments.

Currently Sony is having problems getting enough parts for the Blu-ray. I know this because it was reported in the news paper today

"Besides better graphics and wireless technology, a major selling point for the PS3 is the high-definition Blu-ray DVD player. But a shortage of Blu-ray parts has limited Sony's ability to produce enough PS3 consoles to meet demand." - Houston Chronicle

That's IF you'd have still gotten one. My local GameStop was supposed to be getting 8 PS3s and as such did 8 preorders. Now with Sony cutting back on their numbers, they'll only be getting 6. That means two people are SOL. Another nearby GameStop was supposed to get 16 PS3s and will only be getting 10. Ooops.

As I recall, Sony had never planned on one million units, but instead it was 400,000. From what I've heard, they'll be hitting closer to the 200,000 unit range. Ooops oops.

I remember hearing one of the Sony officials saying something about shipping 1 million... maybe I heard wrong.. ether way, 400,000 units is a even smaller number of units being shipped and with this problem they have hit, only means that there will be less PS3's then I first had thought.

Bah! As I said in the 360 thread, this is why I stick with handhelds. Consoles are getting ridiculously expensive, and that coupled with a seeming lack of intellect (here's looking at you, Microsoft and Sony), have pretty much ensured that I won't be buying one anytime soon. Before I said that I was joining in on the 'lack of Xbox-ness', well, now I'm joining in on the 'lack of PS3-ness.'

Nintendo DS FOREVER!! *bricked and shot by an angry mob*

*sigh*

I pity the fools that are camping right now for the systems. I wouldn't worry about not procuring a Wii in the near future, but the people for PS3's have started gathering since _Tuesday night!_ I can count the amount of people from the start of the line on my 2 hands who will actually GET a system, and them tell the rest of them to either go home and on with their lives, or fight to the death over their place in line (which would cause quite the news headline... and amusement).

I work a shift at my game store from 1130 - 6, and the only thing I will be telling people all day is "No."

Anyone else believing that adding blueray to the PS3 was incredibly stupid? So far it's been nothing but trouble it seems.

Sony is trying to push their Blu-ray technology to compete with HD, and hope to push HD out of the market so that everybody switches to blu-ray and thus Sony gets all our money. That was the entire point to adding blu-ray, pushing their tech down our throats.

Kinda like how UMDs flopped for the PSP.

Yep, that and the competitve one-upsmanship of the industry. They tried to do something that would make them stand out about the other consoles graphics-wise, but the technology just hasn't been perfected enough yet for it to be called the best. Also might have to do with HD being required for all TV programming (in '08 is it?) in the US (not sure if there is something like that in other countries as well). They figure if TV will be required to be in HD, gaming might as well be too. And they had to get something out with Microsoft's selling for a year already and to try to take some sales from Nintendo while they could. Risky and troublesome, yes, but no doubt if the players were switched, they'd try it as well, just so they could be considered the king of the next-gen console.

And just a random edit since I just finished reading a story on PS3 campers in today's paper: Best Buy is saying the 400,000 estimate is accurate as to what they were told. They're supposedly having at least 20 60GBs and 6 20GBs per store (I assume the entire chain, not statewise only), with larger, more popular stores getting a slightly higher amount than that estimate. A few more than Gamestop, but I guess that's to be expected.

And here is the result.

Can't say I was surprised that this was going to happen. Way for positive PR, Sony.

Somehow, I believe that they will somehow warp this to make it positive for them. Discuss.
