This is the kind of thing that qualifies as a launch from Sony. Ha.

Cars being broken into, in full view.
PS3 musical chairs! Now w/ brain damage

This and things I've heard from GameStop employees, like how a PS3 system set up for demos at a different location would frequently overheat and just shut down on them. And the reports that the PS3, which Sony hypes as the HD experience, doesn't actually support all resolutions, and will simply display in a lower resolution in that case.

Hell, I've even seen a video of a PS3 lagging a television. Yeah, PS3s are capable of that. Sweet!

I believe the appropriate response to that is: ZOMG PYO GOT AN ARTICLE FROM THE STAR TRIB!! THAT'S LIKE WHAT I READ!"

Or maybe more like I kinda expected those things to happen at Wal-Marts across this land, as I mentioned previously in this thread. Definitely sad that kids (or I guess adults in enough cases) think they're cool trying to rob and hurt people just to get one. Even stupid things like that BB gun incident in Middy's link, where a reporter even got hit, are just unforgivable. But any PR person they got will try to work their magic, I don't doubt that for an instant.

"PS3 equals street cred, ya heard? This one guy who knew a guy knows that Fiddy Cent took 6 bullets to get his PS3 at the Sony afterparty launch! He didn't even go to the hospital, 'cause PS3 like cured him or some stuff. Daaaang, gotta get one now, boooooy!"

Deja vu indeed. Didn't similar things happen when the 360 came out? I certainly hope that that won't happen with the Wii. Come on Nintendo fans! Show that you're a step above the muggers and burglars!

Thing is, there's a Best Buy quite close to my school... They're most likely sold out at this point, so I hope nothing bad happened or will happen. From what I heard, people weren't allowed to camp out, as there are several restaurants and a movie theater in adjacent locations.

The Wii is in MUCH greater supply than the PS3. In fact, my Gamestop still has three preorders untouched. I'd get one, but I'm running short this month.

As for the PS3 nonsense, it's always fun watching violence over a "I'm sorry, we're sold out."

The thing that really makes me grit my teeth is the fact that Sony is SO DARNED OPTIMISTIC about this launch.

Lets put some some facts in this: at my store, our game reservations are in the NEGATIVE due to people cancelling their PS3 titles. It has been like this all week, and my manager demanded I make at least 4 reservations today.

I took none and cancelled several. You be the judge on whether or not this is considered "successful."

The supposed robberies, shootings and pole injuries alone makes this the most chaotic launch of a video game system I've ever experienced. Add to that the shortages, ebay sellings, and problems some people are already having with theirs. It's just insane.

Thank God I'm getting a Wii (and thank God my brother couldn't get his, from what I've read on Gamefaqs it doesn't seem to be worth it at this point).

Good grief... now that's a new one. People getting hurt because of the PS3 shortage? This is nuts. Then people breaking into cars, people getting shot....(Reminds me of when some people got killed over a Xbox...)

What's next? PS3 Serial killers? :eyes: *Gets shot*

This is absolutely insane. :eyes: :eyes: Well, its my opinion, but Sony should have waited a little longer before they released the PS3, honestly. Then it wouldn't have been so bad. -.- I feel sorry for the people who didn't get their PS3. But life is never fair, isn't it? Sad

The sad thing is that Sony is indirectly responsible for the robberies. Why, you ask? Because they made the PS3 so friggin expensive. All these burglars and muggers can't afford it on their own, so they would rather prey on those who can than make a real effort and try to get one honestly. Actually, now that I think about, honesty is something most people try to avoid. Why go hungry for a month to save the money when you could just jump the first sucker that comes your way?

With that sort of behavior running rampant, how much sense does it make to still have these midnight launches? It's cool and all to get your hands on something new in the middle of the night, but can't people just set their alarms and line up in front of the store when it opens in the morning? Oh wait, I forgot, that takes rational thought. My mistake.

It's actually sad rather then a chance to say anything bad about the PS3.
What's the deal with sony? Why do they do this. Good thing I choose nintendo.

Add to all that the rumor that the "shipment" that "arrived" in the San Francisco event are actually empty.
A big show, that's all it was.

Well, I'm all for handing out blame when it needs to be, but you're stretching things a bit here. If you're going that route, blame companies for the expense of plasma TVs, high-end cars, the cost of homes anymore, heck, a loaf of bread even. Whatever else gets stolen and broken into for money. People get corrupted by greed, yes, but these are still in many ways isolated incidents and as much as the thing costs, a lot is due to what goes into making it, what they need to pay employees, etc., etc. Edit - and if this doesn't explain why it's so high, nothing will:
Quote:
It was clear that the cost of producing PS3 units were high for Sony, forcing the company to charge $600 per unit, but now we know exactly how high. Next-gen.biz has offered a full analysis of Sony's expenses. As it turns out, Sony is losing $306.85 for each 20GB system sold and $241.35 for every 60GB system.

The full production cost for a 20GB system is a whopping $805.85, with the 60 GB coming in at $840.35. Chief among the expenses are the RSX graphics chip at $129 and the Blu-Ray optical drive at $125. In contrast, the $400 Xbox 360 only costs $323.30. For the first time in its five-year console publishing history, Microsoft is making a profit on each system sold.

For those wondering about retailers, it should be noted that stores make almost no money selling consoles. Retailers such as EB Games and Wal-Mart make money on software and peripheral sales.

The steep cost of producing PS3s won't last forever. In general, the longer an item is produced, the cheaper it becomes to manufacture. Over time, the cost of the PS3 will get lower as the cost of parts gets cheaper and production becomes more efficient. That doesn't guarantee Sony will ever make a profit on selling the system alone, but it can still bank on earning a hefty paycheck from software sales and digital downloads. (Found on Comcast.net news page)

Just as much blame goes out to stores not being able to get the security they should have had, not properly planning how to allow customers to purchase them, things like that. The places that were organized didn't have these problems. The running of the bulls should take place in Pamplona, not a Best Buy parking lot/entrance. Just because some people act like idiots doesn't mean a company and their product are really responsible for those idiot's actions.

And while we're talking about money, this is supposedly the highest legit winning bid on eBay so far, accoring to the news tonight:
PS3 eBay bid
Some rich athlete perhaps? Not LeBron James, though. He got his "through a connection" before launch *coughcoughforfreethoseluckyrichloserscough*, according to Yahoo. There's more of your reason why there were fewer for the public at launch!

Hm, I smell some video games = violence dealies coming our way.

Really, people getting shot? Absolutely ridiculous. Some blame can be pushed onto Sony for that lack of available units and for apparently shoddy units to boot. Some blame can be given to individual stores, whether for their security (and for an event like this, there must be security) or for their methods in dealing with the crowds (that Best Buy with the tickets seemed like a good idea, but that musical chair thing was, simply put, unsuccessful). Some blame can be attributed to human nature itself. With an expensive and popular console coming out, the sense of greed and I don't think I need to say anymore.

-_-' It's times like this where we gamers look down upon these foolish incidents and shake our heads in shame. We wonder why there are those out there who consistently give our fandom a bad name. What a bunch of idiots. Now getting a PS3 in the near future is going to be even harder!

And on a lighter note, is it just me, or is it only men who're doing this whole "lining up" business? Heh, it's just like the old comic book and Star Wars/Star Trek stereotype. Wink

Yeah. And most of them wouldn't play them at all. Like paris hilton.

Heh, you're well within your right to bring up all this information, but I'm afraid you misunderstood my statement. I didn't mean that Sony jacks up the price intentionally "Mwhahaha, let's take these suckers for all they're worth" and all that. I meant that they decided to make their next console a monster machine without trying to keep the costs down. When they said "the PS3 will be $599", they painted a big target on everyone who wanted to buy one at launch. But yes, I could've worded that better.

On another note, someone at a gaming news website managed to get an interview with "SCEA exec VP Jack Tretton" (yeah, I never heard of the guy either) and asked him about the PS3's launch situation. Well, he doesn't exactly have the best things to say. http://blog.wired.com/games/2006/11/scea_vp_on_back.html
Ah well, atleast the Wii launch is coming soon and everyone can forget about the PS3. Laughing

Eh, my bad, no prob. I'm as guilty as anyone for hating a certain system, but somebody's gotta play devil's advocate on the whole PS3 issue! Smile But as far as keeping the costs down, well, it's all relative to what we're used to. I mean, yeah, of course it sounds like too much, but seeing that last info I edited into my last post, more and more I'm feeling like it's really not as big of a deal as it's being made out to be. If you're looking at it subjectively with all that goes into it.

Being a journalism school grad, seeing the guy write that he "stitched together certain quotes" makes me even wearier of the accuracy of that Wired article. Major no-no! At times the SCEA guy does an A+ job of avoiding the question, but he does have some decent points if you read between the marketing bs he's spewing. And he has a nice idea for future scientists with flying cars that make breakfast!

I almost forgot about this place...

Anyway, my friend actually got a chance to get 2 PS3s. He waited at Best Buy on Tuesday. After he got them, some people outside offered around 2,500 for each one. My friend sold it in seconds. Laughing

Out of all the crazy things that people did, racing to get a PS3 was the most hilarious thing I've seen in a launch. Seeing all these people running down the street saying "Whoever reaches the other side gets a PS3!". You gotta imagine how many people there would've been if you take out the folks putting it on E-bay.

Since my birthday is pretty close to the launch, my parents actually gave me the chance to camp out for the week and skip school. :/ As tempting as it sounds, I declined it. I'll wait early next year instead. The games right now are poor and the only game worth trying is Resistance.

As for the Wii, I could get it cause my dad gave me $500 for a b-day present but I'm holding off on that for now.

Well, at least they finally caught two of the guys who caused problems across the country. If they couldn't afford a PS3, I'm sure they can't afford bail:

Quote:
PUTNAM, Conn. - State police arrested two men Tuesday in the shooting of a man waiting in line to be one of the first to buy a PlayStation 3 game console.

State police said William J. Robertson, 20, of Woodstock, and Andrew Patnaude, 17, of Putnam, were charged with attempted murder, robbery, assault and other crimes. They were being held in lieu of $1 million bail pending court appearances set for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Early the morning of Nov. 17, Michael Penkala was shot by two gunmen who tried to steal his cash as he waited in line to buy one of the new PlayStations at a Wal-Mart in Putnam.

Penkala, 21, of Webster, Mass., said he was shot when he refused to give up his wallet, which held more than $2,500 in cash. He is still recovering.

Yeah well that guy got 4 and he wants to sell them. All he wanted was the PS3s. Pain didn't matter. Probably because he had the dollar signs in his eyes messing him up.

Wii had already sold 600k units...
http://wii.ign.com/articles/747/747728p1.html

that beats sony's 400k by year end, granted you can buy 2 Wiis and 2 games for the price of 1 ps3 but still the more people that have it the more word will spread and in the end only the sony die hards will be like Wii sucks the graphics are sooo much better on the ps3 yeah i like had to buy a $1800 tv and a $600 ps3 to get really good graphics (an alienware!!! cost less) you can get a 100 buck tv from walmart or just used your old one and a Wii and play zelda...advantage wii cause i care about my wallet more than i do great graphics.
