Well, we lost that old topic on snow... so since we had about 35-40cm (~14-16 inches) of the white stuff fall between yesterday evening and this morning, I thought I'd bring it back up.
I took a handful of photos this morning; before and after shoveling the driveway...
http://photos.extracaffeine.com/index.php?dir=Snow2007%2F
Even I got a snow day today. The winds were so high last night and this morning that even the snow plows had to be taken off the roads... visibility was just... nil. The snow, just like sand, drifts quite a bit when the wind is high. In some places, the snow has built up to five feet.
Our road still hasn't been plowed (we're low priority), so still can't go to work, even if I wanted to. Doesn't matter, all schools, the buses, and most businesses including mine are shut down today. I think the mall is reopening around 5, though. _________________

Whoo.
New York hasn't seen snow like that for close to a decade, now. Yes, we did get some snow, but it amounted to about 3~5 inches, and based on the photos I'd say a good foot and a half fell over there.
I think what was more severe about this snow as opposed to other years was the cold snap that accompanied the snow. At least in New York, it snowed last Wednesday and today is the first day since then that the temperature has gone above freezing. I was told to shovel everything on the day it fell to prevent it from turning from a layer of snow to a layer of solid ice, and thank god that I did--traversing sidewalks with several inches of ice on them is treacherous at best.
Today, it's well above freezing...all of the snow deposits are finally beginning to melt. That is fine and dandy, save the brownish slush that results on the roads and sidewalks. It's messy, but at least it beats slipping and nearly breaking vertebrae. _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! We'll see a good dumping like this at least twice a year, sometimes more. We've had double this in one day in previous years. I can remember it snowing 70+cm (27.5 inches) in one day.
What was bad last night/today was the wind, which gusted to 110km/h (~68mph)... high wings plus snow = severe white-outs. Driving was treacherous and my house was shaking the whole night >_o
We haven't seen above-freezing temperatures in weeks. I don't remember off-hand the last time it went above 0°C, but it wasn't anytime recently. This time of year, it's always around -5°C (23°F), give or take 5 degrees Celsius. The wind-chill will bring the temperature down even further. Right now the temperature is -1°C (30.2°F) with a wind-chill of -10°C (14°F). Nothing too bad. Once the wind-chill drops the temperature to -15°C or lower, then it's too cold.
And that brown slushy stuff? We get that all winter-long.
Some sidewalks around the university campus are kept cleared and the city tries to plow other sidewalks around town, but they're rarely plowed down to bare concrete. We won't get to see all the sidewalks around the city until late March. In the meantime, pedestrians have to walk on the road sometimes... because there's no where else to walk. _________________

I live in Southern California. No snow for me! I have sun, and the occasional storm. The only time I have ever seen this much snow was when I went to Colorado at Christmas of 96. We got two feet of it. I assume snowdays are in effect for these districts. _________________

Sure, you can have our snow for snowcones, Malik! All you need to do is not mind the whole mixture of soil, asphalt, bits of garbage, rubber off tires, coffee, dog urine, motor oil drippings, gasoline, and whatever other things people and animal alike decide to put in the snow.
Enjoy! _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! But they'll have to avoid the Whammy, as they play the most exciting game of their lives! From Television City in Hollywood! It's time to 'Press Your Luck!'--Rod Roddy

Considering we're sometimes called "Minnesnowta," you expect us to have a lot. I think last time on the news I heard we've had about 12.6 inches ALL SEASON. We're on a record-low pace. Considering that New York storm had places with 12 feet of lake-effect snow, it kinda sucks. Sounds like a storm is moving in here Thursday-Saturday, but since it's been in the 40's the past 2 days, it might be more of a freezing rain/ice storm, especially to start out with. They're hoping it turns into a good snowstorm, but I doubt it. Another foot would be nice before Spring, though. _________________ Avatar art thanks to toberboobap, animated gif thanks to Dr. Wily II

Your friend has probably gotten a bad case of hyperbole. 12 feet is...quite frankly, too ludicrous to be believable.
From HERE, my research has told me that at most New York has received 3 feet of snow in areas, far short of what your friend claims.
I'd do some research next time before taking things as fact--12 feet is over one story. I'd expect there to be more media coverage about an area where ground floors are buried in the snowdrifts, but no story like that reached my ears.
There may have been 12 feet in places, perhaps, but that is an accumulation after all of the storms that passed. The main system dumped three feet, and the weather generating machine of the Great Lakes in that are may have contributed to that total, but 12 feet actually accumulated on the ground is a little ludicrous for my belief without research. _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! Meh, I used to live up north, and the highest we got was around six feet in a sort of empty pond-type thing. And that was once, and never again.
We got a good amount of snow up here this week, I was sitting in the basement around 1:00 pm, and I look out the window and I see not light, but black. The stupid wind pushed most of the snow in our back yard up against the side of the house. _________________

Since there is very little pollution here, the snow here is very pure, as long you're not getting this snow from near a road. The snow in my backyard is probably perfect for snow cones.
Ah yes, the "lake effect"... we get that here, although it's more like "surrounded by the ocean effect"... The Atlantic is a big lake. _________________

I'm frankly amazed a thread about snow of all things can last this long. XD
Maybe if we enter an ice age I'll have to worry about snow. But considering it's about 30 degrees celcius, I don't think it's an issue anyway! _________________
