Pulseman was a video game developed by Game Freak, the creative geniuses behind the Pokemon Game Boy games. This was developed in 1994 for the Sega Master System in Japan only. The video game, in my opinion and that of several others, was brilliant. However the game did not have a strong background and fan support in Japan, so a remake nor anime series was developed.
It has been quite a while since I’ve done a fan based fiction, and therefore have decided to recreate the Pulseman universe. However with a franchise such as this where there isn’t that much context to go on, I’ve also decided to add in new characters and merge characters from the DC and Marvel universes. You’ll see hero’s like Static, Batgirl, Deadpool, and Iron Man all wrapped into one universe.
The main story background has been modeled off the original storyline in the video game, which starts in 1999. After that we move onto the “Big Bang” of 2000 in Dakota which takes place in the Static Shock TV show. The story itself takes place in 2004 out of respect of when the game came out. Also, some of the characters themselves are in respect of the names of the original staff of the video game.
Fans of the video game can recognize the heroes and villains that will be played out through the story. For many of you however, this will be a completely new experience. But if it wasn’t for VOLTECCER (volteccer.atomic-fire.com), the only Pulseman Fan Site I found, I would not have been able to pull the background of the original game to recreate it in this fan fiction.
Because of the fact this story takes place in Tokyo, Japan, several times the characters will speak Japanese. Full dialogue in Japanese will be in italic so that you can understand that they’re speaking a different language. Full dialogue in English will be normal text. However there will be sometimes that the characters, either by the slip of the tongue or by habit, will say Japanese words in the midst of the English dialogue. Although I have yet to complete a Japanese course, these references are taken out of the QuickStudy Guide to Japanese Vocabulary and will be footnoted at the bottom of the page what the words mean. For college students, you can pick up this guide in your college bookstore if your college has a Japanese Foreign Language course.
In the event that I have received the knowledge elsewhere, the reference material or website will be displayed, however most of the information I seek will also be from Matsumo, a Japanese High School teacher in Japan who ironically teaches English. The link to his blogging site will always be referenced.
Although this will be a long and slowly worked project, due to the fact I only have time to work on it in-between studies, I would like to thank everyone who reads this fan fiction and gives any feedback on it. With that said, enjoy. |

Chapter 1
Everyone always wishes to become a super hero. The ability to fly, the ability to use special powers such as the power to command the weather, or to levitate objects, or even run really fast have often been the dreams of many. But not everyone becomes a super hero, even when they’re given the power. Some of them actually become villains, overusing their power. My name is Jonathan Fielder, I’m seventeen years old and this is my story.
I was born March 4, 1987 in Dakota, Maryland. My dad is David Fielder, now the head of Pearl Electronics’ Tokyo Division. My mom is Ashley Fielder and is a typical mom, nags you every second of every day of how come you’re not helping to clean around the house. Let me tell you, that’s hours of entertainment.
I wanted to become a super hero myself, but I never dreamed it would actually happen, that is until the Big Bang back in four years ago. I was 13 then, and trying to join the Dakota High School track team. I usually took long jogs around the docks. There I was, minding my own business when I spotted some police helicopters flying by. I ran off to find out where they were going when a giant explosion happened and a pink gas filled the air. I started coughing and wheezing and ran out as fast as I could.
Over the next few weeks, there were outbreaks of the “meta-humans” also known as the bang baby’s, who apparently got super powers from that gas. However, most of them were using their powers to do whatever they wanted. I knew I was affected by that gas, but so far, I didn’t know if I had super powers or not, and I didn’t want to take a chance. Pearl Electronics was frightened about the attacks that they moved their entire corporate offices to Gotham City. If only we stayed a couple more weeks, I would have gotten to meet the only bang baby who decided to be a hero. His name was Static. So I packed up and said good bye to two of my closest friends, Virgil Hawkins and Richard Foley.
Gotham City wasn’t a paradise either. Apparently their “Dark Knight”, named Batman, had run off with other super heroes to form an alliance called the Justice League. And to make matters worse, the Dark Knights in training, Robin and Batgirl, had also disappeared. Robin ventured to form an alliance of his own with teenaged super heroes called the Titans whereas Batgirl just disappeared.
The next month, my father got promoted in the company and was sent over to Tokyo, Japan where their main offices were held. So once again, my family had to move to a new city where they spoke a different language. It wasn’t all bad, except I had to be in double the Japanese classes in school so I could learn how to speak in Japanese. Fortunately, I have a knack with learning languages, which is why I did so well on the SAT’s after taking Latin. So it wasn’t too hard for me. However, my mother couldn’t learn a new language even if her life depended on her, so I had to be around most of the time to work as a translator. Fortunately for my father, the staff he would be working with all know and how to speak in English, so he doesn’t have to worry about it that much, but at least he’s making an effort to attend some night courses.
About nine months ago, I finally figured out what my powers were from the Big Bang incident. Apparently I was given some sort of electrical pulse powers. I found this out after falling off a ladder, but somehow was able to fly in the air. I also found out that I could create an electrical field around myself to go in and out of TV’s, using the electrical current as a means of travel. One of my best friends I made at school, Rylan Yamayuchi, helped me create a costume for my new super powers. He modeled it off of an old video game he used to play. The costume consisted of a red helmet, which covered my eyes, a red and yellow jumpsuit, black under armor, white gloves which my right hand had a special watch on, and red and yellow boots. The problem was I made him modify the leg area. It was a bit too fitting if you catch my drift. I became Pulseman. After a couple of tryouts, we went out into the forest outside of the city to practice on my attacks. I had the simple martial arts attacks, but it was mainly for my electrical pulse type attacks. I could use my electrical pulse waves to create a sword, which I was able to attack some targets. I could wave my arm and create a slashing attack; I could even launch arrow type attacks as well as grabbing stuff, flying, and even a special attack. I can roll up into a little ball and send myself flying at objects, bouncing off of them. We needed a cool name for that attack. My friend and I were pitching ideas back and forth until he remembered something. There’s a game that’s very popular in Japan, and I’m guessing America too, called Pocket Monsters. In that game there’s a little electrical mouse called Pikachu that at a certain level learns an attack called Volt Tackle. After seeing the Anime version of it I kept saying it over and over again until it blurred into one. And that’s how we named it, my special move to wipe out a whole lot of bad guys, Volteccer.
After a couple months of taking care of bad guys, the Japanese Police were more than happy to have me help out, even though I was somewhat of a vigilante. However, there was one day where even I didn’t see this one coming.
---
“Suspects are heading west down Tenechi Street,” the police’s radio informed. There were two police cars chasing a red station wagon in the middle of traffic. Suddenly the red station wagon’s passenger window rolled down as a man stuck his body out and shot at the cop car with a 92FS handgun. Two shots pierced the window as a third shot at one of the tires.
“This is Car 65, we need backup. Repeat, we need backup,” the officer replied over the radio.
“Backup has arrived,” a voice shouted from above. The officer looked above him as he saw a red figure flying through the air.
“Pulseman!” the officer cried out.
“Get your men back. Don’t want to injure anymore then we have to,” Pulseman informed.
“Understood,” the officer replied as he slowed down his car.
“Okay, that’s out of the way,” Pulseman said to himself. He looked at his watch on his right glove. It was a small blue watch, which was somewhat stitched to his glove. However it never really told the time. “Rylan, what’s my status,” he asked.
The blue watch flickered on as Rylan’s face appeared on it. “You’re doing well, Pulse. It looks like there’s a cutoff street up ahead. If you force them to their left, they’ll be going down a dead end,” Rylan replied. Pulseman’s watch quickly flickered as a GPS map appeared.
“Okay then, time to be a hero,” Pulseman said as he looked back at the fleeing car. He held out his hand as an electrical pulse wave extended from his palm to the roof of the car, peeling it off. He then whisked his hand back as the roof detached itself from the car and bounced along the side of the road until it stopped.
“What?” The passenger replied. “Boss, it’s Pulseman!”
“Take him down,” the driver replied. The passenger grabbed his hand gun and shot at Pulseman. However he wasn’t fast enough. Pulseman quickly put both of his hands out as an electrical like shield appeared in front of him, deflecting the bullets.
“Now that isn’t very nice,” Pulseman replied putting his hands down, making the shield disappear.
“What’s he saying?” the driver asked.
“I don’t know,” the passenger replied.
“Looks like you two weren’t paying attention in English class now where you?” Pulseman asked as he charged up an electrical pulse in his right palm. “So, why don’t you figure out how to learn it after you take a look at my Slash Arrow!” Pulseman flung the electrical pulse ball at the cars’ left front tire. The tire blew as the car started swerving to its left onto the road that was the dead end. “Gotcha now,” he replied flying after them.
“What do we do?” the passenger asked.
“Get out of the car and split up!” the driver informed as he opened the cars door and jumped out. The passenger did the same. However they suddenly couldn’t move as they saw an electrical field around them. They looked up and saw that the field was coming from Pulseman’s palms.
“Sorry guys, you’re not leaving that easily,” Pulseman replied as he brought the two criminals together.
A minute later, three police cars arrived as the officers handcuffed the robbers. “Thank you again, Pulseman.” The officer said.
“No problem. Anytime you need help, you know where to look,” Pulseman replied. He then jumped up in the air and flew away.
On a building, a little far away from where Pulseman captured the two robbers was a person looking through some binoculars. “That’s a positive on the match. Orders?” the person asked.
“Green light to engage,” a voice replied over the person’s radio.
---
Pulseman flew into a dark alley. Suddenly, a red light shined out of the cracks of the alley and then Jonathan walked out. He was about five foot eleven with somewhat long dark brown hair. He wore a white shirt with a blue button down overtop of it and blue jeans. He turned the corner as he felt something touch the back of his neck.
“Freeze,” the person behind him said. Jon put his hands in the air. “Gimme your milk money,” the person replied.
“My milk money? You kind need to come up with a better line than that,” Jon replied as he turned around. It was Rylan with his finger pointed at Jon like a gun. Rylan was about a couple inches shorter than Jon wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with a white circle and a red M on it. He also wore blue cargo slacks as well. The two of them started laughing as they started to walk down the street together.
“Gotta be careful now, Jon. You don’t know who will sneak up behind you after you change out of your hero clothes,” Rylan replied.
“I told you that the watch needed to be fixed,” Jon replied grasping his wrist where his watch was on. “I really don’t like that flash of light.”
“Yeah, I’ll get to it,” Rylan answered. The two of them walked up the steps of Jon’s home as they opened the door.
“Mom, I’m home,” Jon called out. The two of them took off their shoes and placed them in a cubby and then walked into the living room.
Jon’s mother walked out wearing a white blouse and dark blue dress pants. Overtop of it she wore an apron. Her brown hair was in a mess too as she held a ladle in her right hand. “Well it’s about time you got home, Jonathan. Where were you?” she asked.
“We were out near the park, mom,” Jon replied as he sat down on their couch and turned on the TV.
“Well your father will be home soon, and the table still needs to be set,” his mom replied as she went back into the kitchen.
“Yes, mom,” Jon replied as he turned to Rylan and winked.
“Tough times?” Rylan asked.
“Oh, it’s just mom acting like her usual self,” Jon replied.
“And I don’t want you to talk in Japanese while you’re in this house, understand?” his mom called out from the other room.
“Yes mom,” Jon sighed.
“In the news of superheroes today, Pulseman successfully stopped two robbers who had robbed downtown Tokyo bank today. The two were cornered on South Linberg street today and were sent into custody,” the TV anchor informed.
“Hey, Pulseman made the news again,” Rylan said.
“In our international news, local heroes of Dakota, Maryland Static and Gear saved the day from a meta-human called Cypher. Apparently the villain broke out of jail and started his rampage of absorbing the super powers from the bang babies.”
“Man, I’d love to go back to Dakota. I miss those two,” Jon said.
“Well, look at it this way,” Rylan said as he walked over to Jon and whispered in his ear, “You’re a super hero too that can travel through TV’s. I’m sure it’ll be easy to get back there,” Rylan then walked back to his chair and sat down.
“New York City in America was in shock today after the nefarious ‘Shocker’ escaped out of prison and rampaged through Grand Central Station. Fortunately, the local super hero Spider-Man was able to web up the victim fast before anyone got hurt.”
Rylan grabbed the remote and turned off the TV. “Man, what I would give to meet all those guys. I’m sure they’ve heard of me, right?” Jon asked.
“You never know. I mean, they talk about them. Why wouldn’t back home talk about you?” replied Rylan.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Jon replied.
“Look, I need to get home before my oya’s* yell at me. I’ll see you tomorrow, that is unless you have night duty,” Rylan said as he got up.
“Probably. I’ll see if I can sneak out of the house tonight,” Jon replied as he got up and walked Rylan to the door. Rylan grabbed his shoes and put them on.
“Later Jon. Goodbye okaasan**,” Rylan said.
“Goodbye Rylan,” Jon’s mom replied from the kitchen.
---
Jon opened up the window in his room as he slowly crawled out. He made sure the door was locked and the lights were off, so it appeared that he was sleeping. He was also to make a sort of illusion of himself sleeping in bed; he only hoped that it would last long enough for night patrol.
After climbing out the window, he hovered in mid air for a moment to close the door and then used his powers to lock the window from the outside. He dropped to the ground as he looked around his surroundings. He then quickly ran out to the nearest alleyway. He checked both ends of the alley before pressing a red button on the side of his watch. A red light shined out of the watch. As it dimmed, Jon was in his Pulseman outfit.
Rylan was pretty good with electronics. He usually made different toys that would help him out during classes. Making a watch that would cover Jon long enough to get him the outfits wasn’t hard. Since Jon’s powers also include entering electronic devices, such as TV’s and computers, Rylan fitted the watch with the same electronics. Jon then was able to store his costume inside the watch and leave a trace of his powers inside the watch itself. So when Jon presses the red button, his costume either leaves the watch or enters the watch.
Jon made sure his helmet was on good and tight as he then shot up into the air. Night patrol was tough for him. Not only did he have to look after a large city, but he also had only 3 hours to do it in. Otherwise, he wouldn’t get enough sleep to function the next morning. Jon looked at his watch. “Pulseman to Rylan, you there?” Jon asked.
“Read you loud and clear, Pulse. What’s the story?” Rylan’s face appeared on the watch as he replied.
“I was gonna ask you the same thing. Anything wrong with the city?”
“Nope, nothing new.”
“Okay, keep me informed.”
“You got it.”
Pulseman flew high up into the air as he landed on the roof of a rather tall building. He looked out on the streets below. It was vibrant with life, but also hard to tell if there was any trouble going on. He sat down and sighed as he zapped his watch. A can of Diet Coke popped out as he grabbed it, opened the can, and started drinking it. It had been quiet all day and he thought that the rest of patrol would be like this. He figured he only had an hour left before he had to get home, otherwise his mom might find out and get worried. He always risked doing night patrol, though every time he didn’t do night patrol, something happened. Rylan on the other hand always risked night patrol. Rylan would normally stay up hours past when he quit. Though if it wasn’t for Rylan’s stand-by alarm on the control center, he would be up all night checking to see if there were any emergencies.
Pulseman sighed as he took another sip of his can being bored out of his mind from yet another fine night patrol.
“You always patrol the city sitting down?” a voice called out behind him.
Pulseman spit his drink out on the floor as he zapped his can back into his watch. He turned around to see a girl standing in a dark purple suit, yellow utility like belt, black gloves, a black spiked cape, and a mask covering all but her nose and mouth with her red hair sticking out underneath in the back. The mask made her eyes look a bright white and had two bat like ears sticking out on top.
“Who the hell are you?” Pulseman asked as he got up, ready for anything.
“Gee, is that anyway to talk to a girl?” she asked.
“Well, only when they’re not in a costume on a tall building,” Pulseman replied.
“I’m here to test you,” she said.
“Test me? You know, I’ve always done poorly on tests.”
“Then this should be easy,” she said as she jumped at Pulseman and kicked him in the stomach. Pulseman flew backwards and off the side of the building. “Well, he wasn’t much of anything,” she turned around and headed back to the door on the roof.
“You know, I’ve always been told not to hit girls,” a voice called out behind her. She looked around to see Pulseman flying in midair.
“So, you’re really not down for the count. In that case,” she reached behind her cape and pulled out a boomerang. She flung it at him. Pulseman, however, just simply put his palm out and zapped the boomerang, creating a constant field from his palm to the boomerang.
“Wow, so cleaver. And here I thought you might actually have some powers,” Pulseman replied as he gently sent the boomerang back to the girl.
“Being a hero isn’t just about having super powers,” she replied taking the boomerang.
“Right, and slow and steady wins the race too,” he said.
The girl just looked at him with a puzzled expression on her face. “What? That doesn’t even make sense,” she informed.
“Didn’t have to,” Pulseman replied as he flew at high speed towards her. She smiled as she ducked out of the way and stuck her foot him. Without any time to react, Pulseman’s chest collided with her foot, causing much pain. He screamed out in pain as he rolled across the floor. The girl got up and looked at him as he struggled to stand up. “What the hell was that for?” he asked clutching his stomach.
“I told you, I’m here to test you,” she replied.
“Yeah but,” Pulseman tried to say.
“But nothing,” she replied as she threw the boomerang at him.
Pulseman quickly charged up his energy in his right palm as he flung a Slash Arrow at the boomerang, knocking it off course; however the Slash Arrow continued on course, hitting the girl and knocking her to the ground. Pulseman held out his palm as an electrical field surrounded the girl. Unable to go anywhere, she just sat on the ground and pouted.
“All right, did I pass?” Pulseman asked, still holding on to the field.
“That all depends on what the test was about,” she informed.
“Okay, how about telling me who you are?”
“I can’t do that, Pulseman.”
“How do you know-?”
“Please, I’ve been studying your tactics for the past week now.”
“Oh, I see. You’re a stalker. You’ve been studying my ‘tactics’ now,” Pulseman replied smiling.
“Hey, it’s not like that!” the girl informed.
“Oh sure it is,” Pulseman replied laughing.
“Whatever, pervert,” the girl said looking in another direction. Next thing she knew she was in mid air flying off the roof of the building.
“Jerk,” Pulseman replied walking away. He then heard the sound of a grappling hook as the girl sprung in the air and landed on the roof.
“Hey, what was that for? You could have killed me,” she yelled at him.
“What was that for? You’re the one that started the whole ‘this is a test’ crap,” Pulseman yelled back.
“Hmph, to think he wanted me to partner up with you,” she replied. Pulseman took a step back as he looked shock. “What does he know? You’re just a pompous jerk with no since of what being a hero is really about. You think cracking jokes is better than saving people,” she informed.
“Hey, timeout,” Pulseman said.
“I can’t believe I was sent here to partner up with you,” she continued.
“Timeout,” Pulseman tried again.
“I should have just stayed in,” she said.
“Timeout!” Pulseman yelled.
“What?!” the girl yelled back.
“What the hell are you talking about?” he finally asked.

Chapter 2
She told me everything. Apparently her name is Batgirl, or at least that’s what super hero name she goes by. Ever since Batman left her and Robin to team up with the Justice League, Robin got very frustrated that he left her in charge of the team. He eventually left for Steel City. But with both Batman and Robin gone, the villains had no motivation to leave their prison, so all that was left for her was the occasional robbery. She contacted Batman, who said he would keep a keen eye out for Gotham, but for her to find someone to team up with. Robin had already gotten a team over at Steel City called the Titans, so she tried other heroes. All of them didn’t work out. So she tried to help out a city overseas, that is until she found out it already had a hero. All she wanted to do was prove to herself that she was better than any hero with super powers. If Robin could do it, why couldn’t she? So she contacted Batman once again, but she said to partner up with the hero of the city already.
---
“You going to be okay?” Pulseman asked Batgirl as they both sat down looking over the city.
“Yeah,” Batgirl sighed.
“Well listen, I need to get back home so I can rest for tomorrow, thanks to school,” Pulseman replied while getting up. “Here,” he said giving Batgirl a copy of his watch.
“What’s this?” she asked taking it.
“It’s a watch, like this one,” he said showing off his watch. “Not only will it tell time, but it also acts as a sort of communicator. My friend made it for me.”
“Thanks, but why-?” Batgirl started to ask.
“Well I’m assuming that you don’t know any Japanese, and if you were told to partner up with me, you’re going to need that to keep in contact,” Pulseman replied as he stepped towards the edge of the roof.
“Hey, I know some Japanese,” Batgirl informed still looking over the watch, wondering if Pulseman always kept copies with him.
“Really now? Okay. You’re pompous brat who loves to be with all the girls and guys don’t turn you on,” Pulseman stated.
Batgirl looked at her with a confused look on her fact. “Okay, so I don’t know any Japanese. What did you say anyways?”
“I said how you look lovely under the moonlight,” Pulseman lied.
“Um thanks?” Batgirl asked while getting up. “Well, I should be going too.”
“Yeah. Take care,” Pulseman said as he jumped up in the air and flew off.
Batgirl smiled as she took out her grappling hook and fired it at another building, swinging away.
---
Pulseman zapped all the lights on his street as they all went out. He slowly flew into his bedroom window, closed the drapes, and zapped his watch returning to his non-super hero form. The lights outside slowly blinked back to life. He started to change into his night clothes as his door opened, there standing was his mother.
“Sneaking out of the house again, Jonathan?” his mother asked.
“What? No, I just um… well, you see now,” Jon tried to come up with a good excuse.
“If you’re going to leave the house to come back in the middle of the night, just tell me,” she replied.
“Yes mom,” Jon replied.
“Now get to bed,” she said closing the door.
---
The next day, after school, Jon ran out of the school and ran home as fast as he could. The faster he was home, the faster he could go out on patrol. He already had to use a “I feel sick,” excuse in two of his classes already.
“Wait up, Jon!” Rylan called out behind him.
“No time, Rylan. I’ve got to go find that girl again,” Jon turned around and said. When he turned back around, he bumped into a man wearing a tan trench coat with black glasses and a red orange hair and moustache. Next to him was a girl, a little shorter then Jon, who had red hair and looked about to be the same age is Jon. She wore a light blue t-shirt and dark jeans. Both of them looked American, but out of habit, Jon replied, “Sorry about that, mister.”
The man raised his eyebrow as he looked at Jon. “He said sorry, Dad,” the girl replied.
“Oh, sorry. Force of habit,” Jon apologized again.
Rylan finally caught up to Jon as he bent over wheezing. “You know, you could have run a little slower Jon,” Rylan replied.
“Can I help you with something?” Jon asked, ignoring Rylan.
“Yes, I’m here with my daughter. She’s an exchange student coming to your high school. We’re supposed to meet up with the Principal,” the man replied.
“Exchange student? Oh, is your name Barbara Gordon by any chance?” Jon asked.
“Yeah, it took my dad forever to find this place,” the girl replied.
“Oh, it’s no problem. To be honest, you weren’t expected today anyways,” Jon informed.
“See Dad, I was right,” Barbara turned to her father.
“Yeah, it was actually yesterday,” Jon backed up.
“What?” Barbara asked as she turned to Jon.
“International Date Line, heard of it?”
“Told you,” Barbara’s father replied.
“Don’t worry, just go in, down the hall, and on your first left is the kenkyuushitu* ,” Jon informed. “The sensi** should be waiting for you.” The two of them looked at Jon. “I’m sorry; the first left is the professor’s office. He should be waiting for you. Still a little force of habit switching between two languages and all,” Jon rubbed the back of his head embarrassed.
“Thanks, um,” Barbara asked.
“The name’s Jonathan Fielder,” Jon replied.
“Fielder huh? Is your father now the head of the Tokyo Division of Pearl Electronics?” the man asked.
“Yeah, why do you ask?”
“David was a good friend of mine. Well it’s a good thing that my daughter is going to the same school as you. Maybe you two can become great friends,” he replied.
“Well, I’m always busy so it’s kind of hard to,” Jon started to say until his watch went off. He quickly looked at it. “Oh, guess I’m a bit late,” he replied shutting off his alarm.
“That’s a neat watch,” she said.
“Yeah, I got it a little while back. Oh well, take care. Come on, Rylan,” Jon replied as he ran off.
“Jon, wait!” Rylan called out as he began running after him again.
Barbara looked at the two and just smiled.
---
Pulseman flew over the city looking below for any signs of danger. On his watch was a picture of Rylan. Rylan looked to be complaining at him for what happened earlier, but unbeknownst to him, Pulseman put the watch on mute. He landed on the roof of a tall building as he looked at his watch. “Gotta go, Rylan,” he said as he turned off the communication.
He walked over and leaned up against a tower as he looked down at the ground below. He waited for a while and then said, “How long are you going to stand there, Batgirl?” he asked.
Batgirl walked up next to him. “You do know I’m not all up for the fighting crime in the daylight sort of thing. I am Batgirl after all,” she replied.
“Yeah well, I’m not a bat. So I have to be active all the time.”
“And how does that work with your classes, Jon?” she asked.
“Not too bad, Barbara,” he replied back. Batgirl had a shocked expression on his face. “Oh come on, you didn’t think I’d notice on first glance?” he asked.
“How?” she replied.
“For one thing, you were still wearing the watch I gave you last night,” Pulseman informed. Batgirl rubbed the watch that was fastened to her left glove. “Secondly, if there’s on thing I can tell, its girls. Everyone else out there may be dense, but I’ve got a keen eye.”
“Oh really?” she asked.
“No, not really. It was just the watch,” he said pushing himself off the tower. “I thought you didn’t know any Japanese?” he asked.
“Well, I don’t. I figured that’s what you probably said to my dad,” she informed.
“Spiffy. So, you got your father to get you in the exchange program, huh?”
“Well, for one thing he doesn’t know I’m Batgirl.”
“Is that a good thing?”
“I don’t know. And secondly, if I’m going to be helping you, better off that my father knows I’m here in Japan then me trying to fake my way by saying I’m over at a friend’s house or whatever when he calls looking for me.”
“I can give you that.”
“So what’s your story? You obviously figured out mine.”
“Big bang.”
“What, that thing?” That was over four year’s ago.” she informed.
“Yeah, I know. And I didn’t get my powers until nine months ago,” he replied as he peered down once again.
“Calling all units. We have a stolen car running down the 34th block of Kiuki Street,” Pulseman and Batgirl’s watches went off.
“What are they saying?” Batgirl asked.
“I told him to have a translator built in. Stolen car, 34th block of Kiuki Street. Let’s go,” Pulseman replied as he jumped off the building and started to fly away.
“Hey, wait up!” Batgirl replied pulling out her grappling hook.
---
Pulseman flew down three streets before reaching Kiuki Street. He started to scan different cars to see if they matched the image of the stolen car. He finally came across one and hovered in the air as he started to scan inside. There was no one inside.
“What’s the problem?” Batgirl asked as she landed on a building close to Pulseman.
“This is the car, but there’s no one inside. Maybe they bailed.” Pulseman replied.
“Or, this could look identical to the stolen car,” Batgirl informed.
“Same license plates.”
“Oh,” she frowned.
“Hang on, they went into that store,” Pulseman informed scanning footprints.
“I’ll go in from the roof,” Batgirl said as she opened a window and hopped inside.
“Great, I’ll just bust through the front door then,” Pulseman sighed. He landed as he opened the doors. He looked around inside the small electronics store and saw no one. “Hello?” he asked, trying to find someone. He kept walking forward until he stopped as he felt something hit the back of his helmet. He blinked wondering what just happened since he didn’t get hurt at all.
“Don’t move, hero. That is, unless you want these innocent people to die,” the man behind him informed.
“Oh, whatever shall I do,” Pulseman mocked.
“You’ll keep your hands up where I can see them,” the man replied.
Pulseman turned around and faced him. He had a black ski mask on, so he couldn’t see any of his facial features. In his hands was a gun pointing right at Pulseman’s chest. He saw another man pointing a gun at a family, sitting behind the counter. “Keep my hands up? Okay,” Pulseman replied as he put his hands up. Pulseman zapped the two guns and pulled them away from the men. They both looked at him in shock. Pulseman then zapped the one man in front of him and stuck him to the ceiling. He turned to the other man who was charging after him. Suddenly a miniature ball and chain went flying at the second man and wrapped themselves around his legs. He fell to the ground and slid within a couple inches from Pulseman’s foot. “Aw, too bad. But don’t worry, everyone leaves with a copy of our home version. It’s called, Guess the Years.”
“Guess the Years?” the man asked struggling to get up.
“Yeah, guess how many years you’ll be sentenced to in prison,” Pulseman replied as Batgirl came down and handcuffed the man.
“What were you telling him?” Batgirl asked.
“Nothing,” Pulseman replied. Batgirl looked at him not believing his story.
A few minutes later, the police arrived to capture the two criminals. The Director walked in and went to Pulseman and Batgirl. “Thank you Pulseman. Once again, you’ve saved out city from criminals,” he said.
“Oh it was nothing, that is if Batgirl didn’t come and help,” Pulseman replied. Batgirl just looked at the two talking back and forth in a language she couldn’t understand.
“So you’re Batgirl. Your legends with Batman and Robin are quite amazing,” the Director complimented.
Batgirl looked at Pulseman. “He said that your legends with Batman and Robin are quite amazing,” Pulseman translated.
“Oh, thank you,” Batgirl replied.
“Arigato gozaimasu***,” Pulseman informed.
“What?” Batgirl asked.
“Say Arigato gozaimasu,” Pulseman replied. “It’s a formal way of saying thank you. Just say it to the director. Everyone else you can say domo**** to.”
“Why just him?” Batgirl asked.
“Just say it,” Pulseman replied.
“Arigato uh-,” Batgirl started to say.
“Gozaimasu,” Pulseman informed
“Gozai,” Batgirl started to say
“Masu,” Pulseman informed yet again.
“Masu,” Batgirl finished confidently.
The Director smiled. “American, huh?” he asked Pusleman.
“Yeah, so am I though. But she just moved here, so it’ll be a while to get used to,” Pulseman informed.
“That is okay, my friend,” the Director informed as he cleared his throat. “You are quite welcome,” the Director informed.
“Wha?” the two of them asked the Director. “You know English?”
“Of course. I took an English course in high school and college should I ever meet someone outside of Japan,” the Director replied.
“Really?” Batgirl asked. “I really need to brush up on my Japanese then.”
“Yes you do,” Pulseman replied. Just then his watch went off. He looked at his watch and pressed one of the side buttons as a picture of Rylan appeared. “What’s up?”
“I’ve got trouble back at HQ,” Rylan informed.
“We’re on our way,” Pusleman replied.
“We?” Rylan asked just as Pulseman deactivated the communications.
“We’ve got to go,” he informed the Director. “Let’s go, Batgirl.”
“Wait, HQ?” Batgirl asked.
Pulseman ran out of the store and zapped Batgirl. With her around his electrical pulse field, he could fly and carry her with him. He flew into the air with Batgirl in tow. “Well this is certainly a new sensation all together new to me,” Batgirl said.
“Are you loving it?” Pulseman asked.
“Not so much. It’s kind of tingly,” she informed.
“Well tough,” he replied.
---
Back at HQ, otherwise known as the abandoned warehouse, Pulseman flew into a window, still towing Batgirl. He landed and let go of Batgirl as he ran to an elevator, with Batgirl following. There, he selected the Sub Basement 34. With the doors closed, he took off his helmet.
“Who are we seeing?” Batgirl asked.
“Rylan Yamayuchi, the kid from before telling me to slow down,” Jon informed.
“Oh,” Batgirl replied. “So it’s safe then?”
“Yup. He’s the one who made the watches after all.”
“Oh, okay,” Batgirl took off her mask just as the elevator stopped and the doors closed. The two of them walked into a large darkened room. Jon dropped his helmet on a table nearby and continued to walk to the center of the room. “Rylan, you here?” Jon asked.
“I’m trying to re-route auxiliary power. I could use a nice jump,” Rylan called out.
“Hang on, I’ll head to the main power,” Jon informed as he created a small electrical field around him, illuminating the area around him.
It was hard to tell anything about this place. For one thing, it was dark. Suddenly she noticed Jon sending out his energy to a power unit, and then the lights came on. It was a large cave area. There were about seven tunnels, all labeled with a corresponding number. The tunnel they just walked down was Tunnel 3. In the middle was a giant computer cortex, made up of a lot of TV monitors all with one keyboard. It looked like a command center.
Jon walked up next to her. “It’s a thing of beauty, isn’t it?” he asked.
“Batman had better,” she replied.
“Yes, well Batman doesn’t have seven tunnels all leading out to different areas of the city,” Rylan informed as he walked back from the auxiliary power. “You must be Batgirl?” he asked.
“And you’re Rylan?” she asked.
“The one and only,” the two shook hands as Rylan turned to Jon. “And you, I told you we were running low on power a day ago.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry. Been a bit busy,” he replied.
“So I see,” he glanced at the two of them standing side by side. The two of them looked at each other, noticed the space between them, which was somewhat small, and both took a step to the side.
“So you have a power generator that runs off of Jon’s electrical power?” Batgirl asked.
“Yeah. We severed the line from the normal plant so we didn’t have to rack up energy bills. Only problem, that generator is so old it can only hold two weeks worth of power,” Rylan informed hopping on the chair near the command center.
“And auxiliary power lasts for an additional week,” Jon added. “You want something to drink?” he asked heading towards a refrigerator.
“No thanks, I’m fine right now,” she replied.
“Hey Jon, don’t forget you have to study for the History quiz tomorrow,” Rylan informed.
“Yeah, I know,” Jon replied with his head in the fridge.

Chapter 3
Jon looked at the quiz in front of him. He then looked at his watch. A light off to the side was the alert indicator. It was currently blinking yellow, meaning there was an emergency, but not anything urgent. He looked outside the window as he saw black smoke rise up from the air. Somewhere downtown, a building had caught on fire. If the light was blinking yellow that must mean there’s people trapped inside. He knew Barbara was on the scene seeming she sent him a text message on his phone saying so, though he had hoped she would just use the watches’ messaging service.
He looked back to his quiz. He was never good at taking quizzes or tests. He’d study for the test, knew everything that was going to be on there, and yet every time he came face to face with a test and his mind would go completely blank. It was as he brought up the courage to ask a girl out on a date, but when he walked up to her, he would start stuttering and the girl would eventually leave. He sighed as he looked all around the room. Originally his history class had thirty-four students sitting down taking the quiz. As of right now, there was only about ten. He sighed as he looked back at his quiz. There were only eight more questions to go on this thirty-five multiple choice quiz. “Okay,” Jon whispered to his paper, “I don’t like you, and you don’t like me. Let’s make an agreement, shall we?”
The teacher looked up from her computer sitting on the desk and saw Jon talking to his quiz. She just shook her head and went back to her computer. Jon always did this on every quiz he knew he was going to do terrible on. He thought by somehow making an agreement with an inanimate object would allow him to receive the correct answers.
“You help me with getting the right answers. The sooner you do this, the sooner I’ll be done, and we can both go our separate ways,” Jon continued to whisper to his quiz. “Agreed?” Just then the yellow light on the side of his watched started to rapidly blink red. That only meant one thing; the situation had gotten out of control.
About ten kilometers down the road, a three alarm fire turned into a four alarm fire as the firefighters battled the blaze. It was an old apartment complex, roughly ten stories high. The fire had started on the fourth floor and spread in both directions. Out of a sixth story window the glass shattered as a grappling hook latched itself on the building on the opposite side of the street. Batgirl jumped out and swung to the ground below, holding onto a three year old kid while a six year old held onto her back. As they landed the two of them ran off to see their parents safely on the other side. Batgirl turned to the fire marshal and said, “There’s still more people in on the eighth floor. Try to hold the fire as best as you can,” she replied.
"Batgirl, we’re losing the battle with the fire. We don’t know how much more we can pump out of the water supply. Is there anyone else still in there?" the fire marshal asked.
Batgirl sighed and wished Jonathan was here right about now to be her personal translator. In fact, she didn’t know why Rylan ever built her a translator so she could understand what they were saying. For her however, this was much different from fighting super villains. But then again she didn’t complain. It was much more relaxing and away from someone as insane as the Joker. She took a deep breath as she shot her grappling hook to the eighth story window and climbed up there.
Jon panicked as he continued his quiz. He didn’t know how much Batgirl could withstand in that heat. He looked back down on his quiz. Only three more questions to answer. He looked around the room, and panicked even more as he was the last one to finish the quiz. He jot down three random letters for the last three questions and ran up to the teacher’s desk. “Here you go, sensi,” he said as he laid the paper on the desk and ran out the door.
Jon bolted out of the door, even though it was only one in the afternoon and school didn’t let out until two fifteen. He ran towards a dumpster as he pressed a button on his watch labeled GO. The ground under the dumpster shifted to the left as a tunnel appeared. He jumped down into the tunnel as the dumpster returned to its normal position. Jon emerged in their underground base coming out of Tunnel 4. “What’s the situation Rylan?” Jon asked as he ran up to the command center.
“Batgirl’s on the scene, but I don’t know how much more she can hold out,” Rylan informed punching up different reports on many different computer screens.
“Great, which tunnel will get me there quicker?” Jon asked as he activated his watch. A red light shinned as Jon appeared in his Pulseman outfit.
“The one you just came from,” Rylan responded. “Oh by the way, the last three were D, B, and B.”
“Damn it. I put C, A, and D,” Pulseman replied as he flew down Tunnel 4, back to the school.
Batgirl helped a family climb down one of the fire engine’s ladders out of the eighth story window. According to the head count that should be all of them, but the fire was getting way out of hand. “Rylan, is there anymore in the building?” she asked over her watch.
“Checking,” Rylan replied over the watch’s communicator. “There’s still some more on the tenth floor. I believe they’re trying to make it to the roof.”
“Pulseman, where are you?” Batgirl asked as she started to head for the stairs.
“Right here. History quiz was a chore. I’m about a couple minutes away,” Pulseman replied over the watch.
“It’s about time!” she yelled as she made it to the ninth floor.
Pulseman flew to the ground and shouted to the fire marshal, “There’s still some more on the roof. Can you get the ladder up that high?”
“No, It barely reaches the eighth floor,” the marshal replied.
“Okay, hang on. Batgirl and I will get as many as we can either to the seventh floor or off the roof entirely,” Pulseman replied as he landed on the roof. He looked at Batgirl who was trying to calm down the group of kids. “Batgirl, we either have to get them to the seventh floor or we’ll have to help get them off the roof,” he informed her.
Just then a fire blast spread from the door leading to the stairs. The two of them looked at the raging fire then back to each other. “Off the roof,” the two of them said together. Batgirl grabbed two kids, one in her arm one on her back and grappled off to the ground below. Pulseman zapped two of the kids and gently floated them down to the ground. There were only six more children to go. Just then the door blew open and landed to the ground near Pulseman. He panicked but then calmed down. He went over to the roof of the building. “Deploy the ladder!” he shouted to the ground. The fire marshal ordered the ladder to be deployed again, but at a safe thirty degree angle. Pulseman walked over to the kids, most of them around the age of seven. “Listen to me, I’m going to lower you to the ladder below. Do you think you can climb down the ladder safely?” he asked. The kids nodded. He zapped two more and sent them down to the ladder. The fire was spreading worse. Batgirl swung up to the roof, grabbed two more kids, and swung down to the ground. When Pulseman saw that the kids were safe he zapped two more and sent them to the ladder. He zapped the remaining two and flew with them to the ground. With everyone out of the building, the remaining fire crews dealt with the fire.
After an hour with battling the blaze, the fire was taken care of. Pulseman and Batgirl explored the fourth floor to see how this fire started. The director soon showed up and met up with the two of them “What can you find?” he asked.
“Not a lot. We can’t even tell how this fire was started,” Pulseman informed him. “No gas leaks, no stove top indications, nothing. It’s like the fire started spontaneously.”
“Shouldn’t be too sure about that,” Batgirl informed as she picked up what looked to be like an ant trap. On the top however, two letters were engraved, “GG”
---
“GG, huh?” Rylan asked as Barbara handed him the object back at HQ. Her mask dangled behind her neck as if it were a hood. Jon’s helmet was on the table as he was busy raiding the fridge for something to drink.
“Isn’t that an online gaming term or something?” Jon said throwing out an empty box of Diet Coke.
“Not in this context no,” Rylan replied. “I’ve got a bad feeling about this though.” He stuck the object into a rather tall machine. In there was a tray in which you could place an object. Around the inside of the case were two backlighting strips and the rest filled with infrared sensors. He looked at the computer next to it as it started to scan the object. The results were done and were displayed on the screen. “Just as I thought,” he said. Jon walked back, drink in hand, to the computer just as Rylan started to read the computer screen.
“What is it?” Jon asked putting his face in front of Rylan’s, trying to read what the computer was saying.
“Let me see what it says,” Barbara informed as she pushed Jon’s head to the side a bit.
“Do you two mind?” he asked as he pushed Jon and Barbara’s heads aside. Jon’s drink fell out of his hand and spilled all over the front of his Pulseman outfit. “It’s a remote fire starter,” he informed.
“Fire starter?” Barbara asked. “So you mean this was arson?”
“Pretty much. All set up by the Galaxy Gang.”
“The Galaxy Gang?” Jon asked trying to find the paper towels in the kitchen cabinets.
“Yeah,” Rylan replied. He walked over to the command center and loaded a video file up which played on one of the computers closest to Jon and Barbara. “The Galaxy Gang is a group of thugs who were lawless and leaderless. They basically did whatever they wanted.”
“I guess you could call them terrorists, huh?” Barbara replied.
“To an extent, however they’ve been dormant for the past couple of years. I’m surprised to see them start up again,” Rylan informed.
“I don’t think that was just a spontaneous act,” Jon said as walked back to the command center, trying to dry off the front of his outfit.
“What do you mean?” Barbara asked.
“He’s got a point. These new fire starters aren’t cheaply made. They must have someone who’s got some big bucks to make these,” Rylan informed jumping down from his chair.
“Which means they now have a leader. Whoever’s funding these obviously knows what he or she wants to do with it,” Jon informed as he took the fire starter out of the scanner. “Which means this little baby is going to lead us right to them.” He tossed the fire started in the air like a coin and caught it as it came back down. “I’m going to check this out with the Director,” he informed.
“I’ll go back to the apartment, see if I can find any more fire starters,” Barbara replied putting on her mask.
“I’ll be here at the computer helping you guys out if you need anything,” Rylan replied.
Jon put on his helmet. “See you soon,” he flew down Tunnel 5 as Batgirl ran down Tunnel 4.
Rylan walked back over to the computer as he saw the soda can that Jon spilled on the floor sitting there. He sighed and shook his head as he grabbed the paper towels and cleaned up whatever was still left from the can that was spilling onto the ground.
At the police headquarters, Pulseman walked up to the front lobby and asked to see the director. The secretary led him down a hallway and into his office, stating to the director that Pulseman was here to see him. As Pulseman entered his office, he noticed a lot of different paintings and trophies showcased on the walls. “Quite an office,” Pulseman said being impressed.
“Thank you, Pulseman. What can I help you with?” he asked.
“Got a present for you,” he informed as he flipped the fire starter towards the director. He noticed on his desk had the name Sugimori Satoshi. So that was the name of the director, Pulseman thought.
“What is it my friend?” Satoshi asked.
“It’s a fire starter. I had my friend analyze it. Guess who it comes from? The Galaxy Gang.”
“Galaxy Gang? I thought they went underground forever.”
“Well guess what, they’re back. And from what we could analyze, they’ve got someone with a lot of money making those,” Pulseman informed.
Satoshi cleared his throat. “The only place I know that has this kind of technology would be the Taniguchi Institute,” he informed.
“I’ll check with them there. Batgirl’s back at the scene trying to find any more clues onto Galaxy Gang’s attack,” Pulseman replied taking back the fire starter and placing it in his pocket.
“Good luck,” Satoshi replied.
From there Pulseman flew down the city until he came to a rather tall building. On it read Taniguchi Institute. From what he knew, the institute was named after Dr. Kenji Taniguchi a researcher in the field of electronics. He had worked closely with Dr. Shakuei Yoshiyama who was working on a way to develop computer personality programs. The project was dubbed “Project C-Life”, C-Life short for Computer Life.
Pulseman met up with Dr. Taniguchi, and asked him about Dr. Yoshiyama. He informed him of the success they had with Project C-Life. They were able to create their first, independent program that was named Lilah. Eventually they were able to communicate with Lilah and able to create a virtual world for her. However, Yoshiyama became obsessively in love with her and started to work on a project that would be able for her to substantiate in the real world. He called it the EUREKA Project saying that it stood for something; however he never officially said what it stood for. Over the next couple of months his staff started to get thinner and thinner as he saw his friend become completely obsessed with the project. At times he would ask him to take a break, but Yoshiyama wouldn’t stand for it. Then one day he believed that EUREKA was finished. He decided to test it out. The problem was that he hooked the entire project backwards and instead he was sent into the computer world. After that, no one ever heard from him again.
Pulseman was shown EUREKA. It seemed to be a large test tube in which a C-Life form would be able to substantiate in the real world, but only inside that tube. “As you can see, that was over five years ago,”
“Five years ago?” Pulseman asked. That would place it a year before the Big Bang, which occurred in 2000. “So you’re saying that with the EUREKA system, anyone can visit the computer world?” Pulseman asked again.
“Based on how Dr. Yoshiyama set it up, yes. The EUREKA system adds C-Life into the blood stream, allowing one to survive in the computer world. When you exit, the C-Life is removed from your body,” Dr. Taniguchi replied.
“Am I safe to assume I don’t want to know how that process is done?” Pulseman laughed. “Can you do me a favor doctor? Can you take a sample of my blood and see if there’s C-Life in it?” Pulseman asked.
“Of course, I guess,” Dr. Taniguchi replied.
After waiting about thirty minutes, Dr. Taniguchi came back with the analysis of the blood. In fact, Pulseman did have C-Life running through his blood stream. However it was an advanced form of C-Life that hasn’t been seen before. The advancement of C-Life, Dr. Taniguchi explained, may be the reason behind his ability to control electricity and enter through televisions to the computer world. Pulseman thanked him and started to walk out the door before he turned around and asked that his records and his blood sample were to be erased and disposed of by him personally. He had to cover who he really was.
Pulseman returned to their HQ as he took off his helmet and placed it on one of the nearby tables. “What did you find out?” Rylan asked.
“I got the backstory of Dr. Yoshiyama’s life,” Jon replied, “and I know why I can control electricity and go through televisions.”
“Okay, that’s good. But what about the important stuff like finding out if they’re making those weapons?”
“Well when I had them take a blood sample I took a peak into every small corner of the building I could find. If they are making these things, it’s pretty well hidden. Otherwise, they’re clean,” Jon informed placing the fire starter back on the table.
“You had them take a blood sample?”
“To find out if I have C-Life in my bloodstream, which I do.”
“Wait, back up. What’s C-Life?” Rylan asked. Just then the alert indicator on Jon’s watch rapidly blinked red just as the command centers computers turned to a red shade with sirens going off.
“Something’s up,” Jon informed as he grabbed his helmet.
“Ya think?” Rylan asked. He quickly searched through the computer banks. “It’s the Taniguchi Institute. It’s on fire,” Rylan informed. Jon put on his helmet and flew down Tunnel 5. “Batgirl, this is Rylan. Taniguchi Institute is on fire. Right now it’s a one alarm fire, however if memory serves, the fire will get a lot worse.”
“I’m on my way,” Batgirl replied through the command center’s speakers.
---
At the Taniguchi Institute, Pulseman and Batgirl entered the main doorway as they saw the scientists heading for the emergency exits. “Does this mean we can scratch them off the list of being the bad guys?” Pulseman asked.
“We’ll worry about that later,” Rylan informed.
“Pulseman, Batgirl,” a voice called out as they entered one of the main hallways. It was Dr. Taniguchi. “It’s Galaxy Gang. They’re trying to steal EUREKA!” he cried out.
“That doesn’t sound good,” Batgirl replied.
“No it doesn’t,” Pulseman informed as he ran towards the stairs. Batgirl ran after him.
They two of them entered the third floor as they saw some men dressed in full black with black masks and red goggles on their faces. In their arms they held MP5N sub-machine gun. They saw the two enter the floor as they raised their weapons and opened fire. Pulseman stepped in front of Batgirl and set up an electrical shield which reflected the bullets. Batgirl grabbed a boomerang and threw it at the men. It hit them both in their hands, knocking their guns out of their hands. Then Pulseman and Batgirl jumped in the air and kicked a guard in the face, knocking them out. “Not bad,” Pulseman said impressed.
“Same to you,” she replied. The two of them continued down the hallway. More guards appeared as Pulseman set up a shield, blocking the shots. He then clenched his right hand as an electrical sword appeared. He jumped up and slashed the barrel of each gun right off while Batgirl made sure each one of them were knocked out.
The two of them soon entered the room containing EUREKA. They saw some men trying to take the system as a tall man, wearing a orange vest, black under armor, white gloves and boots, and black balding hair spiked in the back ordered them to get a move on.
“Hold it right there!” Pulseman shouted as Batgirl grabbed some boomerangs.
The man turned around and looked face to face with Pulseman. “And who might you be?” he asked.
“The name’s Pulseman, and we’re turning you in,” Pulseman replied.
The man started to laugh as he said “You’ve got to be kidding me. Don’t you know who I am?”
“I don’t care who you are, put EUREKA back.”
Batgirl just signed as she slouched. “Will you please talk in a language I can understand?” she asked.
“I’m sorry but I need EUREKA, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me,” the man replied.
Pulseman jumped after the man, but he side stepped, sending Pulseman head first into EUREKA. He collided with it, chipping off his red spike near the front of his helmet. The man laughed again. Pulseman got to his feet and grabbed the spike, throwing it at the man, Batgirl threw a boomerang also at him, but the man sidestepped both as they collided with each other.
“Please, we must do this again sometime, but we have to go now,” the man replied as a portal opened in front of a TV monitor. The guards carried EUREKA with them as the man turned and dropped pill. It cracked as a purple gas filled the air. Pulseman didn’t want to give up as he jumped at the man, barely getting him. However the man entered the portal as it closed, and all Pulseman did is smack his head yet again. Eventually the gas took over and the two of them passed out. |

Chapter 4
Rylan put on a mask that covered his face as he walked into the Taniguchi Institute. After walking around he saw Pulseman and Batgirl unconscious on the floor. He sighed as walked back to get two stretchers. There, he put the two on the stretchers and walked out the back door with them. Rylan carefully tried to get the two to the nearest alleyway that led to their underground HQ. Rylan then activated his watch which slid the dumpster to the left revealing a lift. He put the two stretchers on and pressed the button again. The lift lowered with Pulseman and Batgirl and the dumpster slid overtop of the hole again.
After arriving back at HQ, Rylan dragged Pulseman near the command center and took off his helmet. He then attached a device he called Angel. He then routed the cables to one of the computer monitors and watched it unfold. There he was able to see what Pulseman was thinking about. What he was thinking about was in fact the fight he had with the mysterious person. Rylan glanced at another computer as he started to copy some of the images of the man. He then ran a background check. Sure enough, he found who he was.
Switching to another monitor he started up a location search, but it came up negative. He then tried to find the information on the man, still no luck. With no clues on where he went he turned to the information on EUREKA. If he stole it knowing what it was used for there must have been a good reason. Still no luck.
With his options running slim, Rylan turned to the gas that knocked him out. He noticed some residue on Pulseman’s helmet. He scraped some up and put it on a slide. He then went over to the research station and put it in the scanner. He then started a search to see if this matched anything that they had encountered or by chance it was in the police database. Sure enough it was pure simple sleeping gas. They would be up in about an hour.
Just then one of the monitors blinked red in the command center. He ran over and hopped in his chair, turning attention to that monitor. Apparently a mysterious man had appeared in New York City and was unleashing some kind of robot killers, trying to take over the city. He looked at the profile of the man. It was the same one as the one that attacked the Taniguchi Institute. The only question was how he made it to New York in such a short time. The answer was simple, EUREKA. The good news was that tomorrow was Sunday, no classes.
Jon slowly woke up followed by Batgirl. The two of them saw a kid sitting at the command center with a black mask covering his face. The kid turned to them and said, “So you’re awake.”
“What do you want from us?” Jon asked noticed that he was on a stretcher and somewhat tied up.
“What?” the kid asked. “Oh right, the mask,” Rylan took off the mask as the two sighed. Jon yelled at him for scaring the two of them like that. But they didn’t have time to argue. Rylan informed the two of what was happening in New York City as he helped untie both Jon and Batgirl.
“Okay, how are we going to get to New York City in time?” Barbara asked taking off her mask. “Do you guys have some kind of flying ship or a teleporter? God knows you have a ton of technological stuff.”
“Kinda,” Jon said as he turned to Rylan.
“Hey, I said it was safe for you to do it. I didn’t say it would be safe to bring a passenger,” Rylan barked back.
“Come on, how bad would it be to bring along Barbara through the televisions?” Jon asked.
“I don’t know, and I’m not about to risk it. That’s final.”
“Would you two like to speak in a language I can understand please?” Barbara asked. “How many times do I have to ask people to do that?”
Jon looked at Rylan, however “no” was the only word that came out of Rylan’s mouth.
“Listen, if you have a faster way to get there but it’s a bit risky, I’ll take the risk,” Barbara replied.
“He’s going to take you through the TV’s and travel that way to New York. Fine for him; don’t know about you seeming you don’t have C-Life. It could kill you,” Rylan replied.
“If only we had EUREKA,” Jon informed. “Wait, that’s it,” Jon cried out. “Rylan, could you create a EUREKA like machine that could add C-Life to Barbara’s bloodstream?”
“Only if I had some C-” Rylan started to say as Jon held out his arm. “I’ll take the blood sample immediately and get to work on it.”
“How long would it take?” Barbara asked.
“Well, if I got some help from the Taniguchi Institute,” Rylan informed as he got a needle and some rubbing alcohol, “Probably a couple hours. They should still have a prototype in there. They could refit it and have us borrow it.”
“I’ll go talk to them about lending it to us,” Jon replied putting on his helmet. “Stay in contact,”
Pulseman started to head down a tunnel when Rylan called out. “You know, I’ve been thinking,” he said. Pulseman stopped and turned around. “I need a good codename.”
“Make one up,” Pulseman replied as he turned around and continued to head down the tunnel.
“Make one up,” mocked Rylan.

James Gordon finished filing his paperwork on yet another criminal caught in Gotham City. It had been lonely without his daughter, and the caped crusaders that protected Gotham. Every now and then, Batman poked his head in to see how things were, but he was too busy with the Justice League to stay behind.
He sighed as he took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes, trying to stay awake. He looked over to his phone. Next to it was a picture of Barbara with her mother and him. He reached over to the phone and dialed up Barbara’s cell phone. It rang a couple times and then finally it picked up.
“Road Kill Café, Larry speaking,” Barbara replied.
“Hey Barb, its dad,” he replied. “Just seeing how you’re doing over there.”
“Oh everything’s going fine pop. Already hanging out with a few friends and all,” she replied.
“Well that’s good to hear. Staying out of trouble?”
There was a slight pause. “You could say that,” she finally replied. “I might be able to stop by soon.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah,” Barbara stuttered. “We’re going to New York for a day or two, class field trip and all.”
“A class field trip from Tokyo to New York?”
“Hey, what can I say? These people really know how to make a good field trip.” A beep was heard through the phone. “Dad I got another call coming in,” she replied.
“It’s okay. Just wanted to know how you were,” James sighed.
“Thanks Dad. Love you,” Barbara said.
“Love you too,” he answered. He then hung up the phone and turned looked at the picture again.

Spider-Man swung around New York chasing after Shocker once again. If it’s one thing he didn’t like doing, it was chasing down enemies that always escaped to do what they do best. That and it was freezing cold outside, which wasn’t a good combination. Fortunately for him, it also applied to Shocker.
Shocker came to a rest at a nearby light pole as he tried to gain his breath. Spider-Man swung over and sat on top of one light pole in front of Shocker. “You know, you’d think that the man wrapped in a giant quilt would stay nice and toasty in this weather,” he said.
Shocker looked at him as he charged up one of his fists. He sent a shockwave towards Spider-Man, who quickly leaped out of the way firing a web at his hand. It made contact and stuck to the light pole. Shocker tried as hard as he could, but he couldn’t seem to break free. Spider-Man sat on the light pole behind him. “Didn’t your mother ever tell you to not touch the light pole with your hand, that’ll get stuck to it?” he asked and then thought for a moment. “Oh no, I guess that would be if you touched a pole with your tongue,” he corrected himself.
“I’m going to paint this whole street with your dead carcass, Spider-Man,” Shocker replied still struggling.
“Hey now, that doesn’t sound like the Shocker I know and love,” he replied jumping down to the ground.
Just then something hit Spider-Man in the back knocking him down. He looked behind him to see a man in wearing camouflage pants, a black turtle neck and a black military vest. His one eye looked to be a robotic eye and his right arm had been completely replaced with a large mounted cannon of sorts.
“I’m so terrified that I can’t come up with a corny line,” Spider-Man informed. Shocker too was, well, shocked.
“Marvelous isn’t it?” A voice cried out. A man stepped out of the shadows.
“And you would be?” Spider-Man asked.
“My name is of no meaning to you,” he replied.
“Would you like to speak the language of the good ole United States of America?” Spider-Man asked.
The man looked at him with a perturbed look on his face. “Kill him,” he ordered as he walked away. The second man with the cannon took aim at Spider-Man.
“This can’t end well,” Spider-Man replied.

“Doctor who?” Pulseman asked setting down the prototype of EUREKA. It was pretty heavy, even when he was lifting it using his electrical powers.
“I love that show,” Barbara replied.
“Dr. Waruyama,” Rylan ignored Barbara. “He’s got to be the leader of Galaxy Gang. No doubt about it. Professional background in robotics and C-Life. And didn’t I say not to use your powers to move it? You might fry the circuitry inside!”
“Why would someone like him turn to-” Jon started to ask taking off his helmet.
“Don’t even finish that sentence,” Barbara informed, “because it’ll never make sense.”
“Point taken,” Jon replied. “Though you can’t help look at the similarity in their names.”
“What do you mean?” Rylan asked starting to look over the machine for any damages.
“Well, Dr. Yoshiyama was the one that invented C-Life and EUREKA and got so obsessed with that C-Life girl that he almost went insane. Now you have Dr. Waruyama who has a professional background in robotics and C-Life, and now he has EUREKA,” Jon informed.
“Yeah, come to think of it, I think Yoshiyama means good mountain and Waruyama means bad mountain,” Rylan said put the pieces together.
“How would you like it to go around saying ‘Hi, I’m Jonathan Bad Mountain,’” Barbara joked.
“There are worse last names to go by, Barbara,” Rylan informed. “But sometimes the meanings of your last names don’t really reflect on the person.” He looked in the inside and noticed a lot of corroded circuit boards and connecters. “Jon, I’m going to kill you one of these days,” Rylan threatened reaching for a flashlight to look closer inside.
“Yeah, look at Dr. Yoshiyama, he went almost insane over the C-Life girl that he started not to trust anyone,” Jon ignored and pointed out. “Well look, it’s getting late. I’d better go home before my mom wonders where I’ve been.”
“Yeah, I better get back to my exchange home,” Barbara sighed.
“You know you can always stay with us if you want,” Jon offered.
“Thanks but no, I need to have some normality in my life for a change,” she replied.
“Suit yourself,” Jon said as he pressed the button on his watch as he returned to his street clothes. He said goodnight as he walked down Tunnel 1 and Barbara walked down Tunnel 2.
Rylan poked his head out from the machine and grabbed his cell phone. He called his mother and said he would be late as usual, and then continued work on the prototype muttering an elaborate plan to kill Jon once and for all.

Chapter 5
Rylan was still busy working on refitting the EUREKA prototype Jon brought back from the Taniguchi Institute. The entire insides were shot to all hell thanks to Jon carrying it by creating an electrical field around it. However since he used too much power due to the weight of the prototype, he fried everything inside. He was up until one in the morning and then started work again around nine. He finished working out the inside circuitry and also made a computer panel on the side of the machine so that he could control it from there instead of the command center. If he hooked it in the command center, it would drain the entire places’ electricity supply. He finished tightening one bolt as he wiped the sweat from his forehead. This wasn’t easy work, though it had to be done in order for them to get to New York and faster than taking a plane, or Jon flying.
The prototype itself was the same as the final version of EUREKA. It was a giant test tube with a glass door in front. It was designed so that someone could stand in the middle of and have C-Life added into the blood stream via air molecules. After that, the person would be electrified and sent into the computer world, thanks to the added C-Life. He had to connect the transfer cable to Command Center, but that was about all. With the added computer panel, he could manually input destinations, type of person, and the amount of C-Life needed for a full transfer.
He looked behind him as he saw Barbara and Jon sitting at a table talking to each other. He shook his head and went back to the finishing touches.
“Four armed gunman, three of which who are throwing grenades at me. So I had to zap the grenades out of the path from me while blocking bullet shots,” said Jon. “Finally, I got a chance to take out the one firing and zapped him to a building. Fired three spark arrows at the grenades that were just launched, having the recoil of the explosion send the other three back. Then I roped them all up and there you go.”
“Four words,” Barbara informed. “Joker, Riddler, and Penguin.”
“All at once?” he asked.
“Yes. Of course Batman tried to help, but I came late to the party and he was kind of battered up. So I had to step in and help him out.”
“Okay, try this one,” Jon informed as the two of them tried to one up them other on the best, and most difficult, way out of a situation and coming out the winner.
Rylan finished with the outer casing and struggled pushing it to the Command Center. “I have an idea,” he blurted. “Why don’t you stop trying to impress Barbara and help me power this thing?”
“Can’t you hook it up to the main power junction?” Jon asked getting up from his chair.
“If we want to have a whole ten seconds worth of power to this thing and then having the whole place shut down,” Rylan informed him as he finally got it to the Command Center. There he hooked up the transfer cable and verified the connection with the Command Center’s computers.
“That much huh?” Jon walked over to EUREKA and zapped the power core. Rylan told him to stop when they got full.
“Okay, that should give us about four uses out of this puppy before we have to recharge it,” informed Rylan.
“Great, well now that’s all done, let’s pack and head to New York. I’m going to tell my mom it’s a class field trip,” Jon informed as he walked down Tunnel 1.
---
About an hour later Jon returned with a bag of clothes. “You guys ready?” he asked.
“EUREKA is all online and ready for transfer. You’d better hop inside before we send her on her trip,” Rylan said.
“No problem,” Jon replied as he transformed into his Pulseman outfit and zapped himself into a computer. “All ready on this side,” his voice came out through the speakers.
“Ready Barbara?” Rylan asked as she stood there and gulped. “I’ll take that as a yes.” Rylan walked over to EUREKA’s side computer panel as he started to punch it up. Barbara, still in her Batgirl outfit, attached her mask and walked into the chamber as she looked at Rylan with some discontent. “Don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe,” Rylan informed as he closed the chamber door.
“How are you supposed to know? You’ve never tested it before,” she replied.
“Point taken,” he replied as he pressed the start up button. The chamber filled with a yellow gas as Batgirl coughed a bit. The gas then got electrified and shocked her all over her body. “Stage one complete, beginning stage two,” Rylan informed.
“Everything looks green over here,” Pulseman’s called out from one of the monitors.
The yellow gas started to get sucked into her costumes down to her pores as she continued to get shocked from the electrical current. As soon as all the yellow gas vaporized, Rylan called out “Stage two complete.” The electrical shocks started to create an aura around Batgirl as she slowly herself started to turn into an electrical current. “Beginning stage three,” Rylan informed. The electrical shocks stopped, but the aura remained as she began to dissipate. She then suddenly disappeared all together. “Stage three complete, beginning transfer,” Rylan informed as he pushed three sliders from bottom to top. “Always wanted to do this,” he replied as a hum came out from the machine.
Inside the computer network, an electrical field opened up and made a figure of a person. Batgirl then appeared as the electrical aura disappeared. “Transfer complete,” Rylan’s voice boomed throughout the network. Batgirl opened her eyes as she saw the computer network, lots of wires, platforms, and terminals to access computers.
“Rylan, please tell me you didn’t set the transfer sound to be the transporter from Star Trek,” Pulseman replied recognizing the hum.
“It fits doesn’t it?” Rylan asked.
Pulseman rolled his eyes. “Are you ready to get to New York?” he asked.
“How do we get there?” Batgirl asked. Just then a portal opened up displaying GOV.
“Internet,” he informed as he hopped into the GOV portal. Batgirl followed. Inside there was a vast network with many portals. There were also people running around dressed in green transferring data with between portals. “Those,” Pulseman pointed out, “are computer programs. They’re getting data from websites and transferring them back to the computer’s owners.” Pulseman looked at his watch, “Rylan, where to from here?” he asked.
Rylan’s face appeared on the watch. “You’ll want to head to NYC,” he informed.
After looking over the different portals, Pulseman located NYC and dragged Batgirl into it. There they were in a new network with a few portals this time around. Pulseman located the portal WWW and hoped in, Batgirl following. There they entered an office complex of sorts. There were many links that shown as well as a desk with several different programs helping out other programs. A couple was open, which meant there was some kind of connection. He walked up to one. “Where are you guys located?” he asked.
“You want to go to the Contact Us link, located over there,” the program replied.
“Stay here,” he said to Batgirl as he hoped into the link. He then reappeared and walked up to the same program. “No, I meant where is the server located?” he asked the program again.
“You’ll want to go to the-” the program started to say.
“No, I was just there. I’m trying to find the server location in New York City itself,” he stated.
The program reached underneath a desk and pushed a red button. “I’m sorry, but like I said you’ll have to go to the Contact Page,” he informed.
“This is going nowhere,” Batgirl informed. She suddenly felt a chill go down her spine and looked behind here. There were three large programs holding out guns at the two.
“Freeze, hacker programs!” the one large program informed.
“Hey, were not hacker programs,” she informed.
“You are attempting to hack a United States Government website. We’ve already sent programs to your IP address in order to track you down and bring you to justice,” the large program replied.
“Okay, hold it buddy,” Pulseman informed walking to the program. “The name’s Pulseman from Tokyo, Japan. This here is Batgirl from Gotham City. We’re actually humans. There’s an evil mad man going around in New York, but we live in Tokyo. We’re superheroes. So we-” Pulseman tried to inform. The large program shot Pulseman in the arm as he cried out in pain and grasped his arm.
“You are hackers from a foreign nation. We will let your government aware of this,” he informed.
“Oh yeah, this is pure crap,” Pulseman informed struggling to stand up. He grabbed Batgirls arm as an electrical portal appeared. He jumped in it, dragging Batgirl with him.
In New York’s City Hall, some IT professionals were huddled around a computer frantically trying to track down the source of the IP when the computer monitor started to give off an electrical glow. They backed away as Pulseman and Batgirl jumped out of the computer monitor. “Sorry about that,” he apologized. The IT guys just stared, not knowing what to do. “But there’s a madman from Tokyo running amok in New York, and this was the fastest way to get here. Put it on my tab,” he then flew out the window with Batgirl.
The two flew high in the sky, looking for a safe place to land where they could change and not be noticed. No luck what so ever. Pulseman then glanced behind him and noticed a red and yellow blur coming at them pretty fast. “We’ve got company,” he informed Batgirl. Suddenly, an electrical beam shot out at them. Pulseman flew to a nearby building and landed Batgirl as he took to the skies again. “All right buddy, you want a taste of action,” he said. He shot out a beam from his hand, but the red blur dodged it.
The blur got closer revealing the shape of a man. Dressed in a red and yellow armor, he hovered in front of Pulseman. “Who are you?” he asked.
“The name’s Pulseman from Tokyo, Japan. That’s Batgirl,” he said pointing to Batgirl.
“Batgirl huh? From Gotham City?” the armored man asked.
“Yes, and who are you?” Batgirl asked.
“I’m Iron Man,” he informed.
“Iron Man?” Pulseman geeked out. “All right! Big fan of yours, can we come with you to Stark Tower so we can change?” Iron Man stared at him, but because of his mask, Pulseman couldn’t tell what his expression was.
Iron Man looked at Pulseman, then Batgirl, back to Pulseman and said, “Follow me.”
Stark Tower was huge. It sat just inside New York City overlooking Central Park. It was roughly one-hundred stories tall, with a balcony on the ninety-seventh floor. There Iron Man and Pulseman carrying Batgirl landed. “I’ve heard about you kid,” Iron Man informed.
“Thanks?” Pulseman asked.
“Not you,” he corrected, “Batgirl.”
“Thanks?” Batgirl asked.
Iron Man put out his hand on a scanner as the doors opened. The three walked in as Pulseman and Batgirl were shocked. Even if it wasn’t the top floor, it was huge. “Welcome to Stark Tower, my pride and joy,” Iron Man informed taking off his mask.
“I’ll sure say,” Pulseman replied taking of his helmet and placing it on a nearby table. Batgirl removed her mask as it hung by the back of her neck like a hoodie.
“So make yourself at home,” the man replied. “My real name is Anthony Stark, but people call me Tony for short.”
“Jonathan Fielder, Jon for short,” Jon replied.
“Barbara Gordon,” Barbara informed.
“Nice to meet you all,” Tony replied.
Just then a cloud of smoke appeared as a person wearing a black and red uniform appeared. He wore a red mask with a black outline of eyes and white eye covers. He had interesting holster which strapped from his shoulders, connected around his chest, and down the front of his stomach to a belt, which had an emblem similar to his mask. The holster carried two swords that were diagonal to one another and three guns clipped at his belt. Two SMG’s on both sides, and a handgun in the back. White lettering was painted on both of the SMG’s which read “Deadpool’s Gun” and near the barrel had “This End Towards Enemy” with an arrow showing the direction the gun would fire. He looked at Tony and said “Sorry, Big Red. No sign of web head,” the man replied.
Jon’s eyes widen as he recognized who the man was, but Barbara just stared wondering what the guy’s problem was.
“Wade, meet some new recruits. Jonathan and Barbara, also known as Pulseman and Batgirl,” Tony greeted.
“So what do you look like underneath the mask, Deadpool?” Jon asked.
Deadpool took a step back being a little creeped out. “Teen heroes?” he asked. Tony nodded.
“Wait a second, what do you mean?” Barbara asked. “Who’s web head?”
“Spider Man,” Tony sighed.
“Spider Man’s missing?” the two of them asked in unison.
“That’s the thing,” Tony replied. “He’s been gone since this morning and we’ve had no way to find him.”
Jon and Barbara looked at each other. Jon then pushed the communicator on his watch as Rylan’s face appeared. “Rylan, how long ago was that alert?” he asked.
“About two hours ago,” Rylan informed. “It’s like nine in the morning here though.”
Jon looked at a nearby clock; it was roughly seven at night. “Thanks Rylan,” he thanked as he shut off communications. He turned to Barbara. “Waruyama?” he asked.
“Has to be,” Barbara informed.
Jon turned back to Tony and Deadpool. “We think we know who it might be,” Jon informed.
About an hour later after the backstory of themselves, EUREKA, and C-Life, Tony and Deadpool thought for a while. “If it is this Dr. Waruyama person, why would he come to attack New York?” Tony asked. Deadpool lifted up his mask just enough so that he could eat another chip without exposing his whole face. From what Jon could tell just by looking at his jaw, his entire skin was all discolored and misshaped.
“We don’t know. But with EUREKA, he would be able to teleport anywhere in the world, or even send computer programs into the real world,” Barbara informed. “I guess he chose New York City to be a perfect place to test it out.”
Deadpool tried to say something in between him trying to cram some more chips down his throat. Tony looked at him. “Wade, just take off the mask,” he said. Deadpool shook his head no. “Wade, take off the mask,” he repeated.
“What, and ruin my secret identity?” Deadpool asked, clearing his throat. The three of them just looked at Deadpool as he realized all three of them had their masks off. He sighed and took off his mask. Jon was right, his entire face with misshaped and discolored but also he was bald. “It’s because of those moron’s responsible for the Weapon X project,” Wade informed.
Jon kept looking at Wade. “Yes, well,” he tried to start a conversation but couldn’t peel his eyes off Wade’s face.
Tony cleared his throat. “If you think this Dr. Waruyama came to New York, then we’d better split up to cover the entire city.” Wade stared at Jon back with a contemplating expression. Jon continued to look at Wade. “I figured Wade and I could search the city in the skies while you two check the ground,” Tony added. The two kept the staring going.
“Jon and I should not be in our hero outfit, it’ll make us blend in easier,” Barbara added.
“Good idea,” Tony replied as he looked back at the staring contest Jon and Wade were having.
Wade finally blinked and then shouted in disgust. Jon kept looking at him not because he wanted a staring contest, but because he had never seen a face like that before, and it was interesting to him. Wade put his mask back on as Jon blinked and shook his head. Jon pressed his watch as he returned to his street clothes. Barbara, on the other hand, ran to a bathroom to change. Tony put his mask back on turned to Deadpool. “Let’s go,” he said as he walked over to the balcony and took off.
“Right behind you, tin man,” Deadpool replied as he teleported away. Barbara came back out in her street clothes and grabbed Jon by the arm. The two of them headed to the elevator to exit Stark Tower. |
