Your friend has probably gotten a bad case of hyperbole. 12 feet is...quite frankly, too ludicrous to be believable.

From HERE, my research has told me that at most New York has received 3 feet of snow in areas, far short of what your friend claims.

I'd do some research next time before taking things as fact--12 feet is over one story. I'd expect there to be more media coverage about an area where ground floors are buried in the snowdrifts, but no story like that reached my ears.

There may have been 12 feet in places, perhaps, but that is an accumulation after all of the storms that passed. The main system dumped three feet, and the weather generating machine of the Great Lakes in that are may have contributed to that total, but 12 feet actually accumulated on the ground is a little ludicrous for my belief without research.

No, Takato's correct, Midnight. Never did say one storm, just "somewhere in NY got 12ft." It was an accumulation over many days and on the news every night here. Some media you guys have if they don't even talk about it in the state you live in! Search for Redfield, NY among other places. I forget the town mentioned on the news here. EDIT: That's it, Oswego. Have an old Yahoo news link: HERE It was mostly lake-effect, like I said in my previous post. But it was non-stop snow for something like 20 days, and they got an addtional 3 feet from that last major storm that tore through.

Maryland weather is fun, and so are the weathermen. You switch to every channel before a snow storm and they'll tell you how it's the end of the world and you'll need to have survival kits. County Schools close because they think it's going to snow. -_-. Everyone runs out to buy milk, bread, and toilet paper. Yes that's right, all three items. What I want to know is what kind of sandwhich can you make with milk, bread, and toilet paper? And then we get like... 2 inches and everyone's panicing, and I'm just sitting outside, going "this is the end of the world?" </rant>

Though what is fun is that when the snow has a layer of ice ontop of it, you can easily get to class just by sliding on the ice. It's cool, try it one day.

Rock: Yes, Oswego is a very intersting place, very nice in the summer but mean in the winter. But any city that is placed near a lake has the possibility of lake effect snow... like Buffalo, where I'm from. Kinda glad I got out of there. But nonetheless... lake effect snow = PITA.

Well, another 15-25cm of the stuff is forecasted my city between tonight and tomorrow morning. Lovely. Just lovely.

I pity all the international students that live here for university... especially those who come from places like south Asia, Africa, etc. Some of them say "Oh, I would love to see snow!" before Winter hits... I wonder what they think of snow now T_T

My school had a snow day about two weeks ago.
Long story short, it was crazy fun! My friend and i got to go sledding backwards on and nearly ran over a couple of little kids. Poor guys, lol. Was that a good idea? Probably not, but i had nothing better to do really.
And then, the day following that, was a two hour day for the Pennsbury school district. More fun ^_^.

Afterward, it did freeze into ice which caused a lot of stress for the adults, but not for me.
Yes, yes, there was a little snow on the ground afterwards but it's gone now.

Wheeeee! We're in the midst of a blizzard!! Get equipped with: Snow Shovel. So far about 8 inches has fallen, with up to 7 more expected by the time it ends tomorrow night. Down in the southern corner of the state where my brother goes to college, they had 14 inches overnight and expect to get around 25 inches total.

But creepier than anything: thunder and lightning! I mean LOUD thunder. I know the southern states got hit hard with severe thunderstorms from this system today, but I dunno if I've ever seen this happen. It's only happened twice, last one about 15 minutes ago. But still, freakin' creepy if you ask me.

Crazy ice storms going on in the Iowa area too, I hear. Did the entire U.S. just turn upside down this week or what? XD

That's...a pretty fair representation of this, indeed.

Another giant storm come and gone...New York got some, some being an amount of no more than 2 inches or so, while the Midwest gets dumped on.

Thus, nothing happens in the city--it just gets more treacherous to move around.

Well it certainly can't be said that the predictions made by climatologists about climate change for the next few decades so far have been incorrect. :/

Winters are actually far milder than they have been in previous years, at least here. In my parents' days, Newfoundland would see more snow, and winters were longer.
I'm not saying global warming isn't real, it is. And I'm not saying we're not partially responsible for global warming, but I do think we're blowing it all out of proportion. Climate change is, in the grand scheme, both common and natural. While we may be speeding things up a little, it's likely our climate was going to get warmer anyways.
I do think we should try and cut down pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, I don't think we should worry about climate change that much. Adapt and move on.

In Australia here, the city centre of Canberra (and Sydney, I've heard) has been swamped by a MASSIVE icestorm - heard stories of hail flying horizontally through windows.

Our university lecture halls got thrashed by ice - it's going to be a while before everything's going to be restored to its original state! Our oval was beautiful, though - so much ice!

^^^use this link for a sample! (can't seem to get it linked properly on this forum)

It's a once-in-a-decade event, apparently - and incredibly odd, too, for it to be happening on the last day of summer.

Don't know if my pics are quite Zippo level, but they're close. Saturday and Sunday we had about 13 inches total. From Wednesday night through 10'O Clock last night, we had 13 more (Yep, another thunder snowstorm!). About 4-6 were on the ground this morning, and we're supposed to have another 1-3 by 6 tonight. So this storm will be over 20 inches. Grand total in 7 days: nearly 3 feet. Shocked Considering we had just over 12 inches for the season before this and it had all melted away before the storms hit, this was a ton of snow!

My camera at home has dead batteries, so I only have one from Sunday's storm. The rest are from my aunt's house a couple miles away, taken with her camera today. You get to see her dogs as a visual aid to help illustrate how high the drifts are. Or maybe to make you say "Awwwww..." Wink If they would sit still for pics, that is.

Forgot to rotate this. It's the deck at home after the first storm last Sunday. Looks about the same now:
Deck

This is what my aunt's backyard looked like after Sunday's storm. Notice there aren't really high snow drifts for 13 inches. Dogs didn't care for me taking their picture:
Before

And this is what it looks like today! Starting to dwarf the dogs:
After

This is the largest snow drift, a good 6.5-7 feet high at the peak. The angle is a little deceiving with the steps there. If I could tell where the ground started, I'd have a better estimate. I'm about 5'11 and it's bigger than me! And if you guessed there are 3 rose bushes hidden in this snowstack, you win! You win the snowstack:
Let's play King of the Mountain!

This is what I have left to shovel in front. My back hurts big time. *coughcough* I mean snowblowers are for wimps... Rolling Eyes :
Help me shovel. Please.

Dog Path:
What are you lookin' at?

I really think the path I dug them would make a great sled or luge path...if they didn't have to do their business along it:
Luge!

Path again, in that opposite direction. I liked this angle, makes it look closer to the huge height it is:
Avalanche!?!?

Leading to the end of the path in the back. Fancy snowy rooftops and decks in the distance:
That set of stairs down the deck looks like a slide!

Well, the onslaught of snow a couple months ago was probably my punsihment for complaining on the previous thread XD.
As for when there was snow, it turned into ice and i ended up being bombarded by ice balls from my brother, lol.
Other than that, i built a random fort with him as well. Laughing Laughing We did nothing but nap in there on a day off it was good. Now, the snow's mostly melted or compunded into ice Sad

We've never had a year without snow here; I think back in Feburary we had three days of fairly deep snow.

But we live on a mountain. So I guess that makes a difference.
