Ah, nostalgia...

Nostalgia is one of those interesting things in life. Sometimes it's fun to look back on the past and remember what went on when were were younger... and remember events and things of years gone by. Similar conversations have sporadically sprouted in the channel, but I thought I'd bring them to the forum.

I remember...

...when Rollerblades (inline skates) first came out. I remember getting my first pair for my birthday (which is in November) and learning how to use them in my basement because it was winter XD

...when we got our first modem, a 14.4kbps. Around this time, the web was starting to take off, but not many people had access to the net in their homes. Dad had Internet at work and we were preparing for it ourselves. We mostly just used it to send faxes, though... and it only worked half the time. We eventually upgraded to a 28.8kbps and got dail-up Internet at home.

...when a 56.6kbps connection was top-of-the-line for home.

...watching the very first episode of Pokemon premiere on YTV. I had heard the buzz surrounding the series online and got up to check it out for myself. I got Pokemon Blue shortly after and was seriously obsessed for years thereafter.

...when there was a distinct difference of quality in long distance phone calls. It was akin to the quality (or there lack of) of analogue cell phones.

...and speaking of cell phones, I remember the first of them... those giant brick-shaped monstrosities... Dad worked with the phone company and was one of the first in this province to have one. I remember when digital cell phones were first introduced here. The Motorola StarTAC was the very first clamshell-style, and the phone that popularized the cell phone. Dad had two StarTACs (one analogue, one digital)... and that was our third (and fourth) cell phone.

going back further, I remember the age of the ghetto blaster, and when my sister was obsessed with New Kids on the Block and Jem. I was far more interested in TMNT and Ghostbusters. I remember one time, when I was little, my Dad pulled out his vinyl copy of the Ghostbusters (movie) soundtrack... and the opening tune creeped me out... a lot.

I remember...
...Internet Explorer v.2. Dad had a copy of IE2 on his old laptop, which had a greyscale monitor... the thing was rather large and had a trackball that clipped onto the side. IE3 is far more prominent in my mind... and when IE4 came out, that was big... it updated Windows and everything. Going back a bit further, I remember when my Dad brought home a copy of Windows 95... on 12 floppy disks... we ended up uninstalling it and reinstalling Windows 3.1 because our computer ran too slowly on 95.

...when we got our first sound card and CD-ROM... this was before the days of plug-and-play, so Dad hired a professional to come in and install it... it took him well over an hour to install the hardware and drivers. Yeesh.
And I remember when Dad upgraded our computer from 4MB to 8MB of RAM.

Nowadays, Dad comes to me for computer help. He hasn't kept on top of things since the days of DOS, and so he doesn't know much anymore :/

Yeah, so I jumped around a lot, but that's what nostalgia's all about. It's old memories that just pop into your mind.

I remember when Star Wars: Episode 1 first came out, and my friends all flocked to get the goodies. Games, lightsabers, action figures, those were the days! I still remember playing that Pod Racer game and thinking it was the bee's knees. Playing it recently, it's a wonder I could even figure out ground from wall! Lightsaber fights with cousins will always be a fond memory, as will those Summers on the 4th and family get-togethers.

I remember when push-pops first came out, and how big a deal that was! The same goes for Otter Pops, which were the epitome of high-class dessert item at the time. Oh, and those squeeze drinks! Those were something special, ultra spiffy keen, etc.

I remember the premiere of the Yu-Gi-Oh card game, and playing with my friends at the local card shops. I remember how the shop owner had no head for business, and actually asked me about pricing strategies for packs! I remember pulling the best cards at the time, stuff that could blow up entire enemy fields, and still coming in tenth!

I remember when Saturday mornings were A BIG DEAL, and the cartoons were larger than life. Sonic the Hedgehog, Scooby Doo, Freakazoid, and so forth, so many great series that vanished over time. I can still remember bits and pieces of the Earthworm Jim theme. Such a good show!

The release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and all the toys with it.

And Power Rangers too! I actually owned one of those Green Ranger dagger-flutes, I was so proud! All my little friends were jealous!

I remember when the original Oregon Trail was the coolest computer game, and how on free days in school we always clambered over each other for the chance to play it. And when someone was playing it, the rest of the class crowded around behind the person. "Shoot the bear, shoot the bear!" "Oh no, Jessie died from malaria? She was my favorite!" "You need to raft! Do it! Cross!"

Oh, and there was Odell Lake too, really popular in school.


I remember my own sister being obsessed with New Kids On the Block, and getting Tiger Beat in the mail (anyone else remember Tiger Beat?).


And I still remember when kids went outside to play ;P xD

Ah, the good old days. When if you owned a NES you were instantly cool and the C=64 was the thing to get. I remember when my family first bought one of those while we were living in Germany, I was such a little one that I thought it looked cool just because the box had a jet fighter pilot on it. xD Then when we set up the computer I spent all night playing games on it because it was awesome. :3 The same with the NES, everyone was so proud of how I could shoot all the ducks in Duck Hunt and we would have competitions with some of the other families in the apartment building on who could beat Super Mario Bros. faster.

I remember watching my dad program new computer games for our C=64 using the RUN magazine, and typing in all the commands to change directories just to get a game running. I also remember how in one of my classes in school in order to teach us how to budget and plan things they had us play "Oregon Trail". I even remember rushing home from school in order to watch the new shows that they had on AFN, such as "Garfield and Friends" and "Muppet Babies", and "Dino The Last Dinosaur", "He-Man", "Thundercats", "Transformers", and even a short lived series called the "Porky Pig Show" if I recall correctly. Then the fall of the Berlin wall, which we have a piece of, and the moving back to the United States where suddenly I was an evil outsider and everyone spoke such a strange language based on the popular music at the time. D:

I remember the pops game. You know, the game with the little cardboard chips that you slam a heavy coin into and if you flip the chips over you win them. I use to have some for the "Apollo 13" movie, and you only got those if you got a section of the rocket as part of a toy prize for a meal at one place... which I forgot now. At the same time I remember "Beetle Borgs" as well as "Mighty Max" toys.

OH! And I remember something that most likely a lot of you don't know about since it was on "AFN", and that is "Spaghetti Television". It was a show that was on during Operation Desert Sheild and Operation Desert Storm, where they showed cartoons for young kids as well as messages from soldiers in Iraq to their kids and family, wishing them happy birthday or happy holiday's (depending on which holiday was coming up). It was fun because the hosts would put on a show also, similiar to "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and to get the TV to work they would have to open it up and a scientist just ended up changing out the pasta that they put in it. Pasta powered TV! \^non^/ Now though, you don't really get things like that... There are some airings of soldiers and family wishing a merry christmas and happy new year at times, but no shows like that. v;-;v

Awwwww yeaaah!! Oregon Trail!! Everyone loved getting diseased in that game. Odell Lake was popular at my school too. EAT SOME PLANKTON!! But I loved Word/Number/Super Munchers. How many Troggles could you avoid at one time?! We actually had the craptacular Megaman game at our school too. Those were the days I enjoyed "computer" games. Way better than any of the stuff they put out today.

I remember Crystal Clear Pepsi and the hilarious Saturday Night Live sketch about Crystal Clear Gravy. Back when SNL was funny, with Phil Hartman's "Frozen Caveman Lawyer" and Chris Farley living in a van down by the river and Mike Myers being "Lothar, of the hill people!"

I remember the first airing of Adult Swim being the greatest thing ever and the old days of Toonami with Tenchi and Sailor Moon and stuff. And after Adult Swim ended, there were always old Scooby Doo celebrity episodes. Don't know how many times they played the Harlem Globetrotters or Sonny and Cher ones over and over again!

I remember cartoons on weekdays after school like Mummies Alive, Ronin Warriors, Pinky and the Brain, Eek the Cat, Bobby's World and yes, I'm another Freakazoid fan. "Hey Freakazoid, wanna go look at paintings of hot dogs drawn by those dogs playing poker?" "Sure thing, cop Ed Asner!!"

I remember ABC finally bringing us puppets in prime time with "Dinosaurs." NOT THE MAMA!!! *whack* The baby was Stewie from Family Guy before his time. With the most annoying Elmo voice ever.

I remember how awesome it was that the cult classic show, Mystery Science Theater 3000 was made here. If you couldn't find it on cable, one of the local stations picked it up somewhere. Everyone loves Crow and Tom Servo.

I remember by brother asking for a Steve Urkel doll for Christmas. They made those. We still have the talking Urkel doll in the garage. Along with an MC Hammer one. With his puffy pants. If my brother read this, he'd kill me. I think I have cassettes of Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and New Kids somewhere still too.

I remember 80's NBA basketball with the "short shorts." *shudders* Reminds me of the skimpy piece of fabric I had to wear when I ran cross country in high school. In 20 degree F weather.

That's enough random nostalgia for now. Sweet, sweet memories...

Oh my god...

MECC was one hell of a developer. I remember playing Number Munchers while I was...I dunno, six or seven? I remember seeing people impressed with my speed and accuracy...it was one of my first endeavors in mathematics. I remember Oregon Trail...I got the second game in the series, and was quite impressed with it. I used to be quite good at it, and still would probably be if I could find the CD for it. I remember playing the bundled first version of that game...and thinking how primitive it was compared with the game I was familiar with.

I remember the days of the classic Kids' WB--populated with such classics as Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Histeria!, and other such cartoons. That was the golden age of that channel...I'm quite saddened with what has happened to it since then.

I remember when Super Mario. Bros was too hard for me to finish. I remember watching my uncle play his Turbografx 16 (or whatever it was called) in wonder as he played Bonk's Adventure and Military Madness. I feel like I can play that game if I felt like buying it for the Wii...

I remember when Gameboys came out and I played Tetris endlessly.

Oh gods, I remember the height of the Pokémon craze XD Cards and games everywhere.

Adding to my previous post, I remember when Cartoon Network first started. And when Nickelodeon was still all one channel ;P XD

I remember the old TMNT too, and still love them to this day (and am currently listening to the theme song XD ). I saw how they were releasing the fourth season on DVD, I'm assuming because of the new movie out. Oh I would LOVE that DVD @_@...

Oh, thought of something else XD Anyone else remember those snap-on bracelets? I remember I used to have a neon green one that said "Don't have a cow, man." I think I broke it xDD

I remember the good old Nickelodeon shows. Mr Wizard's World, Double Dare, Finders Keepers...

I remember Beakman's World. Yeah, I loved those nerdy kids' shows

And maybe two or three shows featuring Benji and Lassie.

Balki Bartacamous and Larry Appleton (sp?), and all those Myposian stuff with outrageous names, especially the Dance of Joy
I loved that show's theme song, if only I could remember the title....

I wonder if anybody else remembers the time when everybody thought that the world will end on the year 2000

I remember Crystal Pepsi... and I remember my cousins renting Super Mario Bros 3 when it came out and being totally enthralled with it... playing it all night.

My first console was the SNES... Got the bundle (system with two controllers and Super Mario World) for Christmas.
