okay, so I was talking with some friends when the discussion of favorite characters came up. And then you go onto the next obvious question, why? While we talked I realized that the character(s) that was named was named because he was sneaky, coniving and ultimately very interesting as opposed to the nice 'hero' type.

So, who is your favorite character and why? Do you think that when a character has more faults and problems it makes them more likeable?

The consensus was Murata from Kyou Kara Maou and without giving away any spoilers to anywho who wishes to see the show (which you should, it's amazing) it was because he was sneaky and used what could be described as underhanded methods to gain his wanted outcome but in the end what he did was what saved everyone.

So, what do you think?

Hands down my favorite character from anything I've ever seen/read/played is quite obviously, Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury. I believe I've had a crush on her ever since I was 9 or so and that has developed into fanboyism beyond fanboyism in my older years.

If you have to ask why, I'll refer to something from my old journal:

Quote:
The top ten reasons why Azure is a Sailor Mercury fanboy:

10: She's the least annoying of the inner senshi
9: The color that defines her appearance is blue
8: Her favorite food is the same as mine (sandwiches)
7: She's drop dead gorgeous
6: She's a hard worker (Which I respect greatly)
5: She's somewhat shy (I'm not much for type-A personalities)
4: She's calm and collected the vast majority of the time (See above)
3. She's highly intelligent and knowledgeable (This kind of thing is a major attraction point for me.)
2. She has a dream that she's willing to shoot for no matter how hard it may be to achieve (Another mark of respect from me)
1. Ultimately, she's a kind, gentle soul. (The proverbial last straw).

and there you go.

Me other all-time favorites would be (In no particular order)

For being incredibly badass:

Terry Bogard (Garou Densetsu & King of Fighters)
Gene Starwind (Outlaw Star)
Domon Kasshu (G Gundam)
Duo Maxwell (Gundam W)
Renji Abarai (Bleach)
Midori (Mai-Otome & Mai-Otome Zwei)
Fate Testarossa/Fate T. Hallaoun (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha/A's/StrikerS)
Kaede Nagase (Negima!/Negima!?)
Killua Zoaldyck (Hunter x Hunter)

For being the kind of guy most like me:

Shikamaru Nara (Naruto/Naruto: Shippuuden)
Shiki Tohno (Tsukihime & Melty Blood)
Ky Kiske (Guilty Gear)
Kazuki Mutou (Busou Renkin)

For being ultra heroes of JUSTICE:

Midori Sugiura (Mai-HiME)
Haruka Armitage (Mai-Otome)
Galford D. Weiler (Samurai Spirits)

For being supar cute:

Mikuru Asahina (Suzumiya Haruhi series)
Illyasviel von Einzbern/Illya (FATE/stay-night)
Michelle Chang (Read or Die: The TV/Read or Dream)

For being the smart one:

Shuichi Minamoto/Kurama (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Mint Blancmanche (Galaxy Angel)
Kahlua/Tequila Majoram (Galaxy Angel II)

Hmm, after some consideration, I think this is how it will be for me.

Male - Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchmiest) or Ishida Uryu(BLEACH).

I really can't decide between these two as I like them both pretty much the same. First, for Edward. For all the major shounen animes I've watch, I've gotten really sick of good-hearted main characters. Edward is different however, and he is similar to me for a lot of reasons. One being his shortness, which I share (not exactly short, yet I am not exactly tall either.) Another is his character - being a punk-kid is just awesome. Although in real world I am (not meant to brag) a smart kid, I never like to follow rules unless absolutely needed. However, I share a quality that we also both have - a sense of justice. Exception to bullies (because I cannot beat them up), I do not like people who do things harmful to the society or anything "bad". And I don't know, I've just like Edward ever since the start of Fullmetal Alchemist.

Ishida is probably for his appearance that's similar to me - a bit nerd-looking, wearing glasses, and like to lecture other careless people (aka. Ichigo). He's my favorite BLEACH character for he is a mix of serious and a comedian in the series - and no, not like Ichigo or Histugaya. For such a superb A++ student, Uryu tends to make silly and simple mistakes, just like I do. Although not a great lot of reasons, he's just been a favorite character of mine in BLEACH. Ichigo probably comes second, IMO.

A couple others are probably Takamine Kiyomaro (Gash Bell), Kurosaki Ichigo and Isshin (BLEACH), and Edogawa Conan (Detective Conan). I am more of the "liking main character" type when it comes to male. Now, onto females.

Females - Nagato Yuki/Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) and Mayumi = Thyme (SHUFFLE!).

Do I really need to give reasons for females? Overall, it's for their major cuteness and moe-ism. But what the heck.

Yuki is for her "I.am.a.robot" character. I just love characters like those, especially when I watch they start to develope emotions. And I just tends to dislike the main character when it comes to shoujo animes - don't ask me why.

Haruhi - okay, seriously. Do I really need a reason for her?

Mayumi - She is my favorite character in SHUFFLE for that her "flat" chest has given her no fans at all - and I just hate to fanboy girls that most fanboys ... well fanboys. (That means Sia, Nerine, Asa, Kaede, and Primula.) I am not a big fan of Kareha, and so it came to Mayumi. She is really the only one in the anime that can act like herself in front of Rin - a trait that I like in most girls. And besides, she just looks so moe! *shot'd*

Others are Hinamori Momo (BLEACH) and ... probably Nodoka/Chisame in Negima!. I really look into the character traits for females - since the net is now always filled with moe girl characters.

Well, that says about it.

I'd have to say that my favorite character of all time is Wolverine from Marvel Comics. Although he started being written off as simply the "little psycho", his character has evolved into more of an honorable beast. Unlike many of the other heroes in nearly all of comicdom, he's the only one who doesn't hesitate to kill when he needs to and knows when he doesn't need to. What really impresses me is that he's become something of a wandering samurai, traveling the globe to lend his skills to those that need them. He's an incredibly skilled warrior who doesn't trash-talk and is capable of showing mercy and compassion and I love it.

The runner-up would probably be Doug Ramsey aka Cypher. Yeah, I bet you're wondering who the heck he is. Well, back during the first iteration of the New Mutants team, he was the kid with the lamest power in the world; a complete mastery of languages. Aside from being the only one of the team without a power that could be useful in a fight, he was barely athletic. Yet, he had the most courage out of the team, and the biggest drive to do what needed to be done. When the shape-shifting alien Warlock joined up, the two formed a partnership of sorts- Cypher was the brains and Warlock was the brawn. In times when the New Mutants were seperated and in dire straits, it was always Cypher with Warlock's assistance that reunited the team and gave them a fighting chance. Ironically enough, despite being the weakest member of the team, he was also the one who put his life on the line and took the biggest gambles. It continued up until his death, when he was killed in action taking a bullet for one of his friends; a tragic but fittingly heroic end.

I have so Many fav characters!! I'll list a few below.

MALE

Peter Pan

Peter is the kid that never grows up, which is every kid's best dream come true! He's someone who plays constantly with no rules to abide by, never doubts his own ability and best of all, He can fly!! Razz I think the reason I really like Peter though, is that sort of naive innocence about him, and that nearly infinite ability to inspire those around him to achieve things they never thought they could do, if only they believe in themselves.

I DO Believe in Fairies!!

Edward Elric - Fullmetal Alchemist

Ed is the type of protagonist alot of people can relate to. He has a definate sense of realism about him in both his personality and in his flaws. He's the type of character who feels he needs to be out there doing something to make the world a better place to be rather than letting others do the job for him. But at the same time, he realises that the task is well and truly beyond him. It's very interesting to see him mature throughout the series, and I really felt a connection with him. It's also quite amusing to see his short complex. Laughing

Albus Dumbledore - Harry Potter Series

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (yes, I looked it up) is Jo Rowling's genius at it's best. The guy is one of the oddest and most enjoyable characters I have EVER come across. The odd comments he comes out with, along with his obvious wisdom and eccentricities, and his total devotion to his teaching of the students in his school, make him one of my fav role models. I guess he's the solid point of knowledge and sanity in Harry's and every other person's life, so I dunno how I'm gonna react to this latest book.

FEMALE

Sakura Kinomoto - Cardcaptor Sakura

Sakura is a really cool character. From average elementary student to magic wielding Cardcaptor, she sure takes the transition in her stride. Not that she's not nervous about it right to the end. She struggles with decisions of the heart, but always stays true to herself. That and her invincible spell: "I'm sure I'll be alright!"

Tohru Honda - Fruits Basket

Tohru has this uncanny ability to see the good qualities in nearly everyone she meets. Not only that, but she has a way with words that comforts and reasures everyone she meets. But she's not immune to her own problems, which she has a bad habit of bottling up and hiding. I can kinda relate to that feeling. Best thing about Tohru though, is that she's willing to give people a second chance, no matter what.

Jasmine - Deltora Quest

Jasmine is a bit of a tragic case come good. Orphaned in a dangerous forest at 5, she grew up quickly, learning to communicate with birds, animals and trees. She's extremely strongwilled and has improved senses thanks to growing up in the wild. And best of all, she kicks serious butt!! She's one of my fav characters from my youth, because she showed me that it doesn't matter what your gender is, nor your circumstances of birth, if you set your mind to it; you can achieve anything.

I must say, you've impressed me with your analysis of her character. As someone who has watched Shuffle! rather thoroughly, I can see what you mean about Mayumi. What probably makes her stand out is her stark contrast to the other characters, in many ways (notably appearances). She's a protagonist who seems more...normal than that of the other girls, and her personality seems to also be in stark contrast to that of the other girls--a respect for Rin as opposed to a blatant adoration. That aspect also draws me to her, as she seems a lot more colorful than that of the other characters.

I can't say anything about Bleach, but you've certainly hit the nail on the head with Nodoka. Although Shinobu, her predecessor from Akamatsu's previous work, was someone that I wasn't too fond of, I've found that I've grown more fond of this shy character in this iteration of his works. Yes, she is quite shy and somewhat introvertive, but now that she has the will to carry out her wishes and to stand for her desires, her character comes out much more.

For the Negima! series, I'd have to say that she definitely ranks among my favorite characters, somewhere up there with Asuna and Setsuna.

My all-time favorite character would be: Hercule Poirot. He's just such a collection of oddities and obsessions wrapped up in absolute genius. I love the way he pretends that romance and love are beneath him, yet time and again he ends up putting two people together and setting them on the path to romance.

As towards his tendancy to be right all the time? Hercule pulls it off without being annoying. Watching him come to his conclusions is so entertaining that you never really realize how unreal his reasoning is.

And finally, because I've always found Ms. Marple's cases to be waaay to easy. Hercule's have me pulling my hair out most of the time.

My second favorite would have to be Tuppence. Simply because she was so masterfully done in By the Pricking of my Thumbs- and I still remember screaming in disbelief when they revealed whodunnit.

And my final favorite... Frank Hardy. *shot* Maybe because that was the first bookseries that I really got into and read from beginning to end... all 50+ of them. My fandom of his level-headed action carried me from the old classics to the semi-modern Casefiles. The computer-nerd with a hot-headed sibling. I just connected with him somehow.

<_> *sigh* I feel really old right now...

Yeah, one thing that Shinobu lacks is courage - while they both share the shy trait, Nodoka has the courage to set out and do what she wants to do - clearly different from Shinobu. That is one reason I prefer her - but again, Shinobu's awkward movements for her shyness are also quite funny in Love Hina.

Asuna was originally my favorite character, but like I said, after seeing her as a main character too much times, I stopped liking her. I have to agree with you on Setsuna however - she's around a 2nd or 3rd place for my favorite Negima character. (After Chisame, that is.)

From my sig, you could probably guess that my favorite character is Hikari Netto (yup, from rockman.exe) Why you might ask? I like his attitude and hyper sprit.
Other faves-

Yuna Miyami from Maburaho- She's really nice and smart. A little obseesed with Kazuki though.

Kazuya Shirinami and Apricot Sakuraba- They are an unlikely couple but still are really good. Both are from Galaxy Angel 2.

For anime/manga:

One I can relate to the most: Misugi Jun, of Captain Tsubasa
"Bad-ass" award: Golgo 13 (a.k.a. Duke Togo), of Golgo 13
Comic relief character: Ishizaki Ryo, of Captain Tsubasa
Best hotblood: Fudo Akira, of Devilman
Good role model for anyone: Oozora Tsubasa himself, of Captain Tsubasa

More to come.

Wow, I like so many characters. I guess I'll highlight my three favorites from my top three series, and then a couple of others.

-Nico Robin (One Piece): She's essentially the Strawhat's voice of reason, and her special brand of black humor is quite amusing. Also, she has a very creative and cool power, which she uses in many interesting ways.
-Youichi Hiruma (Eyeshield 21): Hiruma needs very little reason, he's violent, manipulating, but also an expert quarterback and good friend. Plus, his expressions are just hilarious.
-Urahara Kisuke (Bleach): Urahara has always been one of my favorite characters, he's got a cool design, and his behavior is a good mix of comic relief and sage advice. And even in the most serious situations, Urahara makes witty observations and pokes fun at his opponent.
Nara Shikamaru (Naruto): One of the few reasons I still can stomach reading Naruto II; Shikamaru reminds me a lot of myself, he's lazy and sarcastic. He also manages to overcome ridiculously difficult challenges using his intelligence alone.
Don Patch (Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo): Probably the greatest gag character in the history of gag characters.
-Haruhara Haruko (FLCL): Haruko is Haruko is Haruko. Everyone loves her.

Edward Elric (FullMetal Alchemist - Manga Version)
He teaches you that you -can- like characters who are total jerkfaces! He's sour and childish, but you learn to like him anyway, and the fact that you like him despite how awful he is at the beginning of the manga pretty much just cements it for you. I mean, if you can like him from the start, you'll like him as he matures and stops being so brash. (Although I think he's stuck like that.)

Rock Lee (Naruto)
I don't even like Naruto as a series. Rock Lee is such a sweetheart, though. He's so devoted and he endlessly works so hard. Finally an example of a character who became skillful through hard work, not through genes or "natural skill" (and certainly not through ridiculous jutsus).

...and I can't think of any others right now.
