I started this thread because Phantom of the Opera is my favorite book and movie. I've never seen the stageplay, although I might be during this summer vacation.
The movie is just too beautiful for words, and at some parts left me in tears. It goes deeper into some parts that the book just lightly touched on, like Erik's childhood, for example.
I guess you can just discuss how you felt about any adaption of the story, whether it be the novel, play, or movie.
And just one question: Does Erik have a last name, or did he abandon it when he began referring to himself as the "Opera Ghost"? _________________

Erik isn't even his real name, it's just a name he adopted. He doesn't know his real name. Actually, I can't remember if that part was in the book, or in one of those weird backstories.
I LOVE the Phantom, I my life I have dressed up as him for Halloween atleast 6 times. I listen to the songs daily, and I can recite the whole stageplay from memory, so you could call me addicted.
It might have been better if you had seen the stageplay before the movie, because then you wouldn't be comparing the stageplay to the movie. You certainly are for a treat when you see it.
And on another note, stay away from the book, The Phantom of Manhattan, the so called sequel to Phantom of the Opera. It mutilates alot of the points in the original novel, such as redemtion through Christine. The author also tries to "coorect" what Gaston leroux got wrong, which is dumb. I really wish ALW wasn't making it a sequel to Phantom. _________________

I've never known Erik to have a surname.
And speaking of Erik, I have a question regarding his disfigurement. How EXACTLY did it happen? I've seen different versions regarding that. In one version, he was born like that. In another, his face was burned by acid. And in a third source, his face was burned by fire.
So what's the original explanation? _________________

Book, ALW Play: He was born with the hidous disfigurments
Silent Movie with Lon Chaney: It's sutly implied that he might have recieved them as a result of a revolution, some sort of accident.
Movie with Claude Rains; Has the most famous disfigurment scene, with the Acid in his face. _________________

Thanks for clearing that name-thing up. Boy, he's a man of mysteries. ^_^
As for other characters, Raoul is practically how I hope my boyfriend is(if I ever get one). He's sweet, kind, sensitive, and protective, and also is adorable. Seriously, I practically bawled at the part where Erik has his arms tied to the gate and he's about to be choked/hanged. Patrick Wilson can be very convincing when it comes to crying. Every time I see his face, I always say, 'aww!' He sounds so pitiful(in a cute/good way) when he sings, "I fought so hard to free you." That part makes me burst into tears. T^T
EDIT: I've only seen the Andrew Lloyd Webber movie and read the book because I'm only thirteen; I haven't been around long enough to have seen any other versions and actually have appreciated them. I've only heard the soundtrack to the Canadian stageplay, and they sound great. I hope I get to see the play soon. _________________
