I've never had one before and am considering buying one, but am unsure if it'll do what I want it to do. So here are my questions:

1) Would I need to buy anything else besides the IPod itself?

2) Sources I've read don't state at all if IPods can play wmv, vmv, avi format videos. If this is true, is there any way to convert them?

3) Is the playback clear/decent (or better)? I've been asking others, only to get different opinions (some say it's screechy, others say it's not that bad, etc.)

(feel free to call me ignorant for not having an Ipod or not knowing anything about them)

You don't need to buy anything else, as all the essentials (charger, Firewire cable to connect to your PC, etc.) are included. The playback is simply just as good as the file's compression quality. If you play a 320kbps MP3, it'll sound great, if you play a 64kbps MP3, it'll sound screechy.

I'm happy with my iPod.

You have .wmv's and other music files that aren't in the .mp3 format? Don't worry, iTunes will convert for you!

How do you convert MP3s into IPod music? I know I was able to do that with AF's music files, but I can't do it anymore.

iPods can already play MP3s. Just open iTunes, load up your MP3s and put them on your iPod.

If anyone has any suggestions for (free) Video-Nano converters that aren't Videora, I'd like to know. :D

Err, the DRM crap is in iTunes. To my knowledge, the iPod doesn't have all that crap.

And I doubt you'll find much legal digital music from American sources without that DRM crap, iPod or not. Even Steve Jobs has said he dislikes it, but they HAD to put it in iTunes before any of the music industry companies would license their music to Apple. [ Source: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughtsonmusic/ ]

In short, blame the stupid American music industry and especially the RIAA. It's not Apple's fault. If you hate DRM, the iPod is actually probably the BEST choice. Just look at Zune, it's a zillion times worse.

Perhaps iPod have changed since I last tried to play with one, it was my understanding that if you had an iPod that you could not transfer music on or off it without itunes... nor could you put them on a computer the file did not orignate... unless you used it as a portable harddrive, in which case the player would not read the files as music, so if you did want to use it as back-up storage for your music you had to have the files on there twice, once with itunes and once as a hardrive.

Bah.

Anyway, I suppose it all depends on what you really want to do with it, and where you plan to use it. I don't know much about the Zune except the software used to transfer files. All my friends have one, even my father has one. Not my thing though. My major reasoning behind getting an iriver was there was no software to install, you just pluged it into your computer, droped your music into it and you were good to go, you didn't have to have the files on there twice. Also it suports a good span of file types. But like I said, for a first time MP3 player, a iPod is probably a good choice.

I have a 2 gig Sansa MP3, and it does fine for me. I can even listen to the radio w/o a stupid adapter thing (which you need w/ an iPod. The good thing about iPods are that they hold an insane amount of songs, though. MP3's cost less an I'm fine with mine.

If you have an iPod, you can downlaod off of Rhapsody.com and put songs on from Rhapsody, but not Windows Media Player. If you have an MP3, though, you need to burn a disk of songs that you got from iTunes and put them on something else and then transfer. It's just a few simple strategies I've figured out by playing around w/ my friends iPod and my MP3.[/url]

I'm on my second iPod now (first was an original nano, the new one is the new nano), and I'm pretty impressed with them. i don't think I've ever really hada problem with the iPod itsself, but iTunes likes to delete my music upon occasion, which can be pretty annoying. ^_^; Oh, and if you want to keep it unsratched up, you might want to buy a case for it. Also, if you dislike earbud headphones, you'd need a pair of those, too. Other than that I don't beleive you'd need anything else.

iPods are quite good overall. The interface is the best, bar-none, and iTunes is excellent for managing music, especially when you start to pick up a sizable collection. One notable problem that plagues them, however, (and it's one that plagues many an MP3 player) is that it's a bit underpowered. It might be a good idea to get yourself a Chu Moy amp and a decent pair of headphones.

That's not DRM. Yes, iTunes sells DRM'd music, but that doesn't mean the iPod plays it exclusively. The reason you need iTunes is that the iPod needs to have a database of songs built each time it's synced. The music files themselves are kept in hidden folders - they're actually quite easy to access.

Personally, I really like the Apple's approach with the iPod. They were the first that offered an MP3 player that properly displayed metadata. Prior to that, only the file names were displayed.

Hmmm..... Really? So, what's your opinion on other MP3 players? Like Microsoft's Zune.

Have you ever heard of Rhapsody Music Store. You can burn stuff to the library, or buy stuff and sync it to an iPod Without iTunes. I've done it before.

The iTunesDB used in the iPod has been figured out for quite a while now. There are 3rd-party programs that allow iPod syncing. On Ubuntu, I personally use Rhythmbox, for example. In any event, however, most people out there would just use iTunes, hence my reference to it.

As far as Rhapsody goes, its music is DRM'd, so I'm not very fond of it. I also don't like any of Real's software, but not to the extent of their late-90's monstrosities. Aaaaaand, I personally find their astroturfing against Apple quite distasteful.

Anyhow, that said, what set Rhapsody apart is that Real reverse-engineered Apple's FairPlay DRM and began using that to allow iPod customers to buy from Rhapsody. Of course, Apple threatened Real with a lawsuite, and that was the end of that.

The Zune's not bad. Didn't make much of a splash sales-wise, but it's a pretty decent player. The Zune2's automatic WiFi syncing is a very nice feature that I'd love to see catch on, to name one thing I like about it.

In the end, though, unless Microsoft (or anyone else) can come up with a totally killer, must-have feature, I'll stick with Apple's offerings.

I got a 30 GB Video/MP3 player awhile back. It's wonderful. Close enough to an IPod and at a lower price, but more difficult to control because the touch/sensor button to move the menus is so sensitive. Still worth it, got it at $170 and it works fine.
