Cosplay Construction - Greiga Rockman - Tutorial

Long time no update. :D

Finally back on a streak again of working on this damned thing. Next up: the vest! I'm taking a break from actual armor work cause it gets really tedium after working on it for almost a year. >_>; thus I get to instead burn myself with hot glue and fight with the wonderful fabric known as spandex.

The base is fully completed, and it easily slips on over my head so no clasps or zippers were needed. Next I'll begin on all the details and attachments to the vest, including:

- collar
- navi symbol
- red trim along the bottom
- shoulder spikes

Wow, it really seems to be all coming together. It looks quite good! ^_^ I'm just curious to know what the vest is made of, other than spandex.

It's just 1/2 inch thick foam covered with spandex. I used hot glue to attach the spandex to the foam. :3 I made two pieces - one for the backside and one for the front. I then sewed the two completed pieces together at the shoulders and on the sides. Not that hard. ^^

It looks very good. The vest may be easier then the rest I can bet. Since it's not much more then a vest and a symbol. If I remember it well.

Today I got some more work done, and I actually do have progress photos and tutorial info to share. However, I need to head to bed since work starts at 7am tomorrow, so I'll post it after I get home in the late afternoon or so. In the meantime, here's where I'm at so far:

All that's left for the vest now is the navi emblem and the spikes on the back.

ALSO, if you are going to Oni-Con down in Houston two weeks from now, I will be debuting Greiga there. ^_^

I gotta say, this tutorial's been a big help, especially the whole helmet section, in putting together my Bass for Tandokucon xD ^^ I have a question though, have you ever had a helmet that didn't fit quite right? If so, what'd you do to fix it? (Or what can you recommend?)

I actually have had that problem. When I first made my Harpuia helmet, I forgot to factor in that the helmet size shrinks a little after you paper mache it. Well... I REALLY screwed up cause after it dried I couldn't get it on at all. XD

And really, I ended up just completely re-making it all over again. Thankfully I had made the wings separate and so that they could be attached with screws, so THOSE I did not have to re-make. So yes, technically I have two Harpuia helmets. ^_^;;

I am leaving late this afternoon for Oni-Con! All pieces are now completed except for the paint on the arms. Those I am finishing up within the next few hours. I will have photos from the con of the entire completed costume when I return Sunday night. ^___^

That looks really nice, Ryouko. I like how you made the feet as slippers. Most people would try to make a complete shoe or even go so far as to an entire boot, but your method allows for easy movement.

Indeed. XD *loves walking around in those shoes now* RAGHR BIG FEET.

The best tip I can ever give anyone is to make your footwear comfortable. If your costume hurts too much to walk in, it's going to suck really bad and be truely unenjoyable.

I know what you mean XD My mom tries to make us shoe covers, but I think my brother kept slipping in his.

EDIT: By the way, how did you get the emblem to stick?

The shoes are awesome and the vest looks good too. Those shoes could probably be used like bedroom slippers. Which is cool. This is coming together nicely.

So, I'm finally back from Oni-Con down in Houston, Texas. The whole con was absolutely fabulous, and my first cosplay contest experience was simply wonderful. With over 100 contestants, I ended up winning one of the five Judge's Awards. I couldn't have been any more excited! So here is a picture of the fully completed costume of Greiga on stage. ^___^
