Tribe 5 (Snowcone with your spoilers?)

We begin in a small village deep in the snow covered mountains. Inside the chieftain's hut, Gori Monjiou is making the chieftain an offer he can't refuse. He has even brought along a brief case filled with cash! The chieftain doesn't want any of it though. Gori gets flustered, so his fem-bots (yes, that's what I'm calling them) open up more brief cases, also filled with cash. The chieftain wants no part of it.

The deal doesn't go through, and we see Gori's limo (equipped with skis) driving away. Gori downs some alcoholic beverage, and we discover that the fem-bots can actually speak. Gori isn't too worried about the failed deal. He'll show them... Oh yes he will...

Title Screen: The Snowman of Himanara

More materializing craziness at AMAKEN. Now the crew are materializing Wave Boards, using them to 'surf' an artificial wave...wave. Utagai looks happy. Subaru's Star Carrier begins to beep. It's a call from Orihime.

After making his stylish exit, Orihime tells him that she thinks she's found the location of an Oopart, and wants Subaru to check it out. So he calls Cancer Bubble. It seems that Misora is currently in the middle of a concert, so she can't come right away. So Subaru sets out on the Wave Roads by himself. The destination: a snow covered mountain range, Himanara.

He ends up in the village we saw eariler. The idiot, he's not dressed suitably for the weather. While he's shivering, a kid who's even more androgynus that Tsukasa steps out of the nearest hut. She is Laana, the daughter of the chieftain it seems.

So Subaru finally gets a winter coat and a nice mug of hot chocolate. The chieftain makes some remarks about Subaru's lack of preparedness for the weather, then gets riled up over something he says, and leaves.

Subaru and Laana go outside, she shows him what appear to be wrecked stone pillars. There are giant footprints in the snow. There's some mention of a 'Bunji Company'. Subaru finds a business card, and then notices the prints. He wonders what made them, and then gets a call from Misora. She doesn't seem to be happy to see Subaru with another girl though. Heh heh. Throw another log onto the fire, why don'cha? Him cutiing off the call doesn't help her mood either. This is followed by some Cancer Bubble funniness.

Back to Subaru and 'friend'. They've followed the tracks to a stone altar. Some talk explaining the altar's signifigance. Then the wind picks up.

As the two are heading back, there is a large crash, followed by villagers running from a 'Snowman'. Yeti Blizzard has desecrated another stome pillar to get at what's inside, but there doesn't seem to be anything. The chieftain, armed with a shovel, yells at him to stop. Yeti Blizzard is amused and chucks a snowball at him, which is destroyed by a well placed buster shot from Rockman.

The two know who the other is this time, so they clash in midair. Yeti Blizzard sends a volley of snowballs Subaru's way, but he out runs them and counters with a Gatling. After chasing each other for a bit, Yeti Blizzard summons a whipping gale with Nadare Deiko. Subaru blasts through it, but Yeti Blizzard escapes.

Back in the limo, Gori downs another bottle while muttering about the Ooparts. At the far end is a monitor, and Yeti seems to have a plan...

Next Week: Subaru talks to the chieftain, Harp Note shows up amidst a volley of snowballs, and Berserker Rockman squares off against Yeti Blizzard inside a building.

Whoever designed those parkas should be kept locked inside an apartment with no ventilation while the air conditioner is full blast until he/she realizes that they're ugly as sin.

After the big budget-fests of Tribe 3 and 4, this ep was more low key. The brief scrimage with Yeti Blizzard was animated fairly decently, I thought, even if there wasn't that much going on in it.

I have a message to Akira Takahashi: Learn how to draw Orihime's eyes please. They're supposed to look more...oriental?

Webb's list of random observations:

Cancer's so wrapped around Misora's finger it's beyond funny. I actually thought he was going to break down and cry when Misora brushed him off. And his trench coat of doom just keeps getting better... although his fedora was strangely absent.

And why are we having the coolness of the Utagai Area repeatedly rammed down our throats? It's gotten to the point where I'm wondering if the Three Stooges just live at Amaken now and do nothing but test out the Materialization feature. If the directors are wanting to show Subaru being chummier with the Stooges, there are other ways of doing it.

Subaru gets the 'Golden DUH Award' for this episode. You'd think that he would have at least had the foresight to pack some better clothes, although he gets points for remembering that he can just wave around wherever he wants.

I had a momentary lapse and went 'BRIGHTMAN!' when we panned over Laana's back. That scarf is so Brightman...

Overall it was a fairly solid set-up episode, but the battle felt really out of place. I think it would have worked better to omit the fight altogether and spend some time developing the rest of the plot since everyone with brain cell knows that Gori is Yeti Blizzard.

I first saw this, and I realized how much better the Utagai Area has become. But, I find it strange how Gonta can jump over Luna, barely, with that surfboard. Plus, I see Orihime-san's eyes was missing shade, DUH. After that, my first imprssion of Yeti was... well... dumbstruck. His EM form looks nothing like a Yeti. As far I can only see, it's a mouth-moving mask floating in purple stuff. Finally, I see now that Misora's really REALLY serious about Subaru and another girl just like in Ryuusei no Rockman 41. Oh boy, I laughed so hard after noticing Misora's impression of the situation: Subaru together with an androgynous girl

Well, I think that both the anime and Capcom are to blame for Yeti's mediocre design. Capcom's fault for making such a bland design to begin with, and the anime's because the static glowy energy stuff...was originally flamey and animated. Just look at the game sprites of the FMs. I guess the flames would've been too impractical to animate, which is why they went with the glowy stuff.

Finally caught up with Tribe and I have to say: is anyone else bothered that Misora's role seems to have been diminished to moe lolibait and jealous girlfriend? True, she was lolibait before, but I just feel that'll explode in Tribe. Just a hunch.

I thought it was a good episode. The gorilla guy makes me think he knows how to clone or I'm trapped in the 1980s. Is he addicted to something? (See how many get that if it's even funny.) But Cancer = funny. And you'd think he'd grab a coat. But oh well, the girl sounding girl got him one. And Misora's jealous. Ha ha ha. Funny. Robo, you have a DA link? I'm not on there but I do go there from times.

But I agree with you that her role does seem to have taken that step, to start out the season at least. Probably will be as long as they try to focus on new characters and plots for now.

And of course I was just joking about adding more, this was great enough. Forgot about that gypsy-lookin' mom pulling her kid away from Jean, though! Misora's mom: who says she can't be fine in the anime world. Not like we've seen her! And glad you took that Mayu stance.

Words fail me, Robo, except maybe "woooow" and "lol."
Though, I do find it interesting that Subaru's first two brothers, and the brothers he had the longest in the first Ryusei game are Misora and Luna. Coincidence?

On another note...
Don't get me wrong, I like Misora: she's a thousand times better than Luna and infinitely times better than Meiru, but, to be honest I really don't care if her role is downplayed to the jealous girlfriend character, since she really doesn't have anything to do with the actual plot, other than being a support character.
The main focus (at least early on) will be on Burai and Orihime.
But, hey, that's just what I think.
