This topic sort of crossed my mind while looking at Ryo's Gregar costume. Just how do your parents/friends react to your fandom of anime, like dressing up as weird creatures, and attending conventions with other people? Or the fact you've decorated your room with these bright posters of cartoon characters and childen action figures? Or that you're watching these tv shows in a language you don't understand?

My mom has sortof a verbal question of why I wacth this stuff and can't understand, though she doesn't object. My dad doesn't mind at all in the least and seems to enjoy it as much as me (Though truthfully all he knows about is Pokemon ^.^) Well enjoy might be a diffrent term, but he doesn't seem to mind Anime North. And with the people I call friends, the issue has never really come up...so they might not even know.

They don't give a crap.

Well, they do think it's a colossal waste of time and money (especially my Giant Robo figure which is AWESOME), but they don't mind overmuch.

My parents think its a waste of time and money, and that I should grow up already. They don't really think it's 'grown-up' stuff, rather it's stupid in their POV. I think it's good, though, to go and do stuff like that. A real nice hobby, but I can't help but feel so sad nowadays. Wish I can go to Otakon and see people from this board. *sigh*

Well, my parents aren't really aware that I follow any anime series, but of course they know I buy manga. They don't mind really. My dad kinda shrugs it off; he's not bothered, as he knows I appreciate comics of most sorts. My mom is trying to learn more about what exactly manga is, she even got me an issue of Newtype recently, though it turned out to be the creepiest thing I've ever read.

Outside of home, I usually keep it to myself that I'm into anime/etc., lest I be lumped in with the folk that go around sporting anime merchandise, peppering their speech with Japanese words (UGH), or loudly discussing how they think the Sasuke/Itachi fight will end.

I only collect three manga series, and I'm currently following only three anime series (Ryuusei no Rockman, One Piece, and Tengen Teppo Gurren Lagann), so I keep it low-key. You're not gonna find any figures or posters in my room. I'm just a causal fan, not an otaku.

Okay. How do my parents react?Well,my mom has endured 3 conventions as well as the craziness that is the Pre-Reg night...she only likes the cons, mainly for the walking all over the place.

Also, she keeps an eye out for con tidbits in the paper as well as asks me about the Anime club I attend, which is a good thing indeed.XD

My dad...he's not really enjoying the joyride that happens every year.Heck,he wants me to only concentrate on studies for my Senior year, instead of cosplaying and soaking in the Anime club.

How do my friends take it?They see it as amusing, depending on who you ask.

I doubt anyone in my family but my nephew know what it is. And my firends all like it as well so, that's it mostly. People do know I like cartoons and I have a good reason: "They're better then a lot of stuff on TV." And for some people: "I'll watch what I want so please, shut up."

My parents don't think much of it, but they still somewhat lightly chide me for "watching cartoons," as they call it. I've gotten to the point where I drown out much of what my parents say.

My brother is a far worse case--he's gotten to the point where he usually sticks in his room and watches anime on his laptop. I've watched some series, but not to the extent nor vigor that he does.

I think I'll continue to watch anime for the foreseeable future, and it is my hope that I will be able to attend a con eventually. However, given that there is now a seemingly annual convention in New York City now, this may be easier than I thought.

Also, Happy New Year to those of you on the East Coast and everyone else to the east up to the IDT! o/

Eh, my parents don't really mind it seeing as I make my grades to a high enough point where anything else I do on the side will seem normal to them.

But I have to admit when I didn't do so well in school it was quite a different story. Heck, I even remember a time when I was 15 and my dad said "Sure hope you don't expect to get a girlfriend with all this Anime stuff!" mind you he didn't exactly say stuff but the next week I made an effort to get a girlfriend and then rubbed it in his face for half a week, heh.

One of the main things that most people who aren't into anime don't seem to get is that it's pretty easy to maintain a "normal" life while being heavily interested in anime and video games and what not. I mean heck I'm a pretty normal guy myself but I still sit on the edge of my seat anytime I see a fight in bleach or Gundam 00

ah well overthinking these kinda things is a bit silly in itself too heh

My mother always just laughed it off,,,I guess she expected it to go away. :P

My friends who aren't into this stuff tolerate it. Love hearing about Japan and will pin the hem of my latest crazy cosplay venture for me. Most of my friends have similar interests, though. Can't get much better than that!

At first my parents thought it was just a phase, but when it didn't go away they learned to accept it. ^_^; They eventually thought it more of as a culture experience rather than just a fandom thing. It really helped them to understand the scope of anime and manga when I brought them along to a few conventions (especially to ones out of state when I still needed a chaparone). I used to go to Animazement in North Carolina all the time for Yuu Watase (Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres, etc...)

My dad always loved all the cosplayers. ^_^; So when I started doing it myself, they didn't mind. I even received a sewing machine of my own for Christmas this year, without even asking for one. My mom's reasoning, "So you can keep making your costumes after you move out."

So...yeah. ^^; Most of my friends are as crazy as me, so we all mesh.

My mother always feels the need to tell me "You're too old for that," and generally just wants me to grow up, stop watching cartoons, and get a... real life. Whatever that is. Truth be told, I'm hardly as obsessed with anime as I used to be. I've cosplayed once, and it was for Halloween. I wouldn't cosplay again, and if I went to an anime convention, I'd just dress regularly. I love Rockman and all, but I'm not brave enough to go strutting around in spandex, and.. well, I don't really have any other anime fandoms, so I'm good to go.

Somehow mom still finds some way to complain about it, though. xD I should have her take a look at the extremes some people go to and see if she's still willing to call me obsessed. <.<;;

That was very thoughtful.

My parents don't mind my fandom just as long as it doesn't affect my schoolwork or take over my life.

As for my friends, they're all fans, too. We always watch anime & play children's card games together during class breaks. Last summer I even convinced one of them to join me to attend Animethon (he'd never gone before).

My parents, especially my Dad, were both kinda weary of my anime obsession at first. I've been into anime for about 9-10 years now and they always saw it as childish. And they really didn't like anime/J-Pop music... mostly because they understood a word of it.
They got over it, though, over time.

Now, at 23, my father doesn't even bat an eye when another Kirby or Mario plush appears in my bedroom... I'm sure he doesn't like it and still thinks it's childish... but he rarely bothers to say anything about it anymore.

I feel kinda shy cause I like RockmanExe very much. Coz... RockmanExe is kinda boyish and all so I don't really tell many ppl except for the ones close to me.... My friends have different obsessions but luckily, I got my close cousin with me Smile
She's a year younger than me and she likes Bleach, and we BOTH like the main character so I have a similar person with me lol.

My parents don't really think much of it except that my mom says that "Shouldn't it be your brother reading that instead of you?" When I asked her if it would be ok for me to buy the manga but she let me buy it anyway.

My parents like to joke when I speak japanese, but then they also supported me by buying me a japanese dictionary and asking me if I wanted to join a japanese class during holidays.

I don't really like to talk to my parents about anime. They have an interest in what I watch, however. It bugs me so I don't tell them about it. They probably think it's weird that I've gone to anime conventions, they're pretty judgmental about people there calling them freaks and stuff. I've only dressed as humans. I don't hang posters in my room, and I haven't wanted any action figures in a year or so. My family used to be weirded out that I would watch anime in japanese but I've explained it to them and now they don't question it.

My friends I think I've told most of them that I'm an anime nerd. They're probably bugged by it, I try not to be over bearing. I have some friends that like anime anyway. I've told them that I've gone to anime conventions... I don't let anyone hear any japanese music I'm listening to, also music of any language. One time my sister was on my computer and listening to itunes or something and "Soshite Kyou mo Sekai wa" by Maes Hughes's voice actor came on and I was embarrassed but I don't think anybody even noticed.

It doesn't bother them much. I used to go to Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments and they thought that was sort of a waste of money (which I'll agree), but I'm not so daring to cosplay or go to conventions. I try to keep it lowkey. I showed a friend some anime once and he just... stared. He liked it, but he didn't like some of the outfits the female characters had to wear. My bad idea showing him Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuutsu.

Really, I keep it to myself so they aren't bothered.

most of my friends share similar but not all interests, so there's no real problem or something.

The only thing they tend to mock me about is my adoration for Live Action. But then I mock them for other things, so that evens everything out. :>

But it saddens me that when I say that things are OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAND, that everybody looks at me like I called their mom's a wh-..... someone who does stuff for money.

X.

That's not that weird. I recently told my nephew to watch that and two others and then later may jokes about it that he thought were funny. He thought the videos were horrible though but that's normal.
