What is with Sega and making moderately smart decisions as of late?

EDIT: Due to many people misinterpreting simple English, here's a clarification. Sonic Unleashed has not been confirmed to follow directly from Sonic 06's story. It is simply to be considered the next 'real' Sonic game in the series, after Sonic 06 - which was the next canon game after Sonic Heroes. There is clearly a big dark creature that reminds us of Iblis in Sonic Unleashed, much like there was a dark evil Iblis-esque creature in Sonic and the Secret Rings regarding the Ifrit. This suggests - but not confirms - that SEGA are once again being influenced by a similar 'dark' storyline to tie up the game. Thank you for misunderstanding. If English is not your native language however we'll let you off.
Further, The Sonic Stadium has obtained this information via its own sources and the only information that lies under 'speculation' is the information that immediately follows the word 'speculation'. END EDIT.
Sonic Team has a funny way of making games these days. This morning The Sonic Stadium broke news of a forum post leaking images pertaining to be from Sonic Unleashed. We can now confirm that these images are real. This will be the next Sonic game.
And yet, we don't know quite how to take the news. On the one hand, we're excited with the promise of gorgeous levels and a Sonic that we actually want to associate ourselves with. On the other hand... well, read on.
Sonic Unleashed will be the next Sonic 'canon' game, if you will, intending to follow on from Sonic 06's Iblis disaster ('disaster' in more ways than one), hence the weird unimaginitive dark creature git in the screenshots this morning. You see Super Sonic attempting to stop Eggman once more, but a new trick up his sleeve results in Sonic having to deal with a rather unnatural curse.
A werewolf. Sonic has to fight a werewolf alter-ego of himself.
Yeah.
But hey! Look how gorgeous this is!
Makes it all better in a weird way, right? The locales look stunning, and Sonic has never looked better. During the Sonic stages you can expect to encounter levels in a mixture of tried and tested ways, including Sonic and the Secret Rings style running and switching to 2.5D platforming on the odd occasion.
At various points he will change into his werewolf form, at which point a gameplay gimmick will come into play - something we've been told isn't exactly in keeping with trying to make a Sonic game... well... let us say, 'good'. We have our suspicions.
The blue hog won't be alone on his adventure either, as another new character that will probably be dispensed of in ten minutes will make a no-doubt unwelcome and unnecessary appearance. Just who or what this character will be is unknown as of yet.
Finally, Sonic Unleashed is currently a working title and, like Sonic Wildfire before it, will likely change before its release. We weren't told what consoles the game is destined for, but if we were to put our speculating caps on we'd say the SatSR elements would point to the Wii being a likely candidate. Sonic Team appear to want to continue the trend of adapting old stories into the Sonic universe, let's hope the werewolf thing doesn't bring things down a peg or three.
To see some official art of the were-hog, check out SEGA-Portal's archive of screenshots that were added throughout the day.

Now, here's what raises my hopes.

SEGA is launching SONIC UNLEASHED with a HUGE production budget and it seems not only SONIC TEAM is involved but a very huge part of SEGA’s developer teams including those from Japan, the US and, apparently for the first time, even Europe. There seems to be one clear mission: Rebuild the Sonic brand and prove it could work in 3D environments. |
I dislike the whole Werehog thing, but if the level design is good I may just forgive it. That's going to be it's only saving grace, though, is the level design. Plot and transformation are going to ruin this puppy.
I'm really glad that the designers are going more 2.5D than true 3D. Sonic has always thrived in 2D, and the majority of his 3D excursions have been utter failures. Now if they can pull this off withough being too linear and throw in some multi-tiered level design a al Sonic 2 and 3 it'll be good times.
Also, kudos to the character designers for knocking Sonic back to the Genesis days. Seriously, he looks like he walked right off of Green Hill Zone. Major win.

Quoted for truth. Even though I only played the games off the Adventure series, I found that they didn't work out as well as I had hoped. The story...eh. I can't recall when a Sonic game was driven primarily by the story. I would be almost tempted to disagree save the one biggest annoyance and discontent about the Adventure series of games--the camera. The levels worked quite well, but the damned camera aggravated me almost to the point of throwing my controller at the screen in frustration.
2.5D seems to be a fine solution. I'll keep my eye on this as we progress. _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! Well, depending on how the game is so far, it might be good. But it better be on the Wii. And they better finish it this time! Not like Sonic 06. |

Actually, Sonic 2006 didn't even look all that good. Looked below-par sometimes. And with clunky animations. _________________ SPOILER:

Hmm, seems to me like Sega is gearing up to go back into the console wars. They already patented a bunch of things, including controllers and peripherals, so chances are they are planing a Dreamcast 2 |

Sonic Is Unleashed!
SEGA’s newest Sonic title is set to combine amazing next gen capabilities with classic Sonic 2D gameplay!
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (April 3, 2008) – SEGA® of America and SEGA of Europe Ltd., today announced that everyone’s favourite hedgehog will be breaking new ground yet maintaining his roots, in the upcoming title, Sonic Unleashed™. Developed by renowned studio Sonic Team, the latest installment in the multi-million selling franchise, will take players on an unforgettable high-speed journey around the globe in a way never before experienced in the world of Sonic. The game is set for release later this year and will be available for the Xbox 360™ videogame and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, Wii™ home video game system from Nintendo and PLAYSTATION®2.
Sonic Unleashed is built on a powerful new “Hedgehog Engine”, which introduces seamless 3D to classic 2D camera transitions, whilst delivering a rich and expansive world with multiple paths to choose from. Under development for three years, the Hedgehog Engine produces a visually rich next generation look and feel with elements of classic Sonic gameplay mechanics. The Hedgehog engine will help re-define the gameplay experience for Sonic fans and newcomers to the franchise alike.
“By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love” commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe. “In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic… making this his most exciting adventure yet!”
Having been broken apart by the evil Dr Eggman, it’s down to Sonic to put the pieces of the world back together again by retrieving the power of the chaos emeralds. In doing so, Sonic will find himself in a race against time and faced with an unusual situation that will challenge him in ways never before seen. By completing a wide variety of action-packed stages, spanning the seven broken continents of the world, gamers will need to unleash Sonic’s amazing abilities to save the world, and himself!
The opportunity to engage in Sonic in different ways during the day and night time levels brings a completely original way of playing to the Sonic franchise, in addition to running at high speeds in classic Sonic style, combat fighting will become possible. Super quick Sonic’s speed skills will be highlighted by four new modes, whilst the all new combat, movement and functional abilities will offer depth and variety to the game. As the sun sets in Sonic Unleashed, a different type of adventure will awaken in Sonic’s newest quest…
Sonic Unleashed is scheduled for release worldwide in late 2008."
Sonic must reunite the 7 continents with the 7 chaos emeralds and when Night hits him he goes were-sonic.
Coming for everthing cept the DS. _________________

So, what this tells us:
1) Sonic will indeed mutate into the WereHog (quite literally, it appears)
2) You'll have to go through the game multiple times to unlock the true ending. (So help me, if they do this like they did in Shadow the Hedgehog I think I will scream.)
3) Sonic Advance 3's plot is getting recycled. <_<;;
I think my confidence in this game just took a hit. But I'm hoping that the gameplay will redeem it. _________________

V_V *Watches video*
O.O *Screams in terror*
I think I'm gonna die......;_; Sonic is too cute and cuddly to be a werewolf!!!(Well, not exactly....)
Sidenote: In wikipedia, there has been an update that (SPOILER) Sonic contracts lycanthropy from Eggman's machine. Who would have thought that? _________________

Not sure if you guys/girls have heard this yet. But Sonic Unleash has now been confirm to be Sonic Adventure 3. Has no connection to 06 or Sonic and The Secret Rings what so ever, Its continuing from the SA series. |

@Aries, WereHog is tied to the Chaos Emeralds, actually. And yes, I'm not thrilled with the idea either.
I agree though, Sonic's appearance in Unleashed is actually eye-pleasing enough that he shouldn't have to be stuffed into a fur coat (sorry, but that's what the WereHog reminds me of, Sonic in a fur coat) and given a set of teeth. I wish that they'd just left them alone...
I actually can't wait to see Tails and Knuckle's Unleashed designs. If Sonic's back to looking like his Genesis counterpart, then Tails could actually return to the realm of the adorable.
Anyways, following up with Robin's info... highlights from the Official Nintendo Power Magazine... credit to Roy Alvein over at CN since I'm basically playing copy/pasta.
Quote: | - Originally penned to be Sonic Adventure 3
- Has no/little relation to previous 3D sonics, including 2006 and Secret Rings
- The power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds are misused by Eggman and something changes inside Sonic’s body.
- Sonic heads around the world, with various different realistic locations.
- No direct mechanics from Wii’s Sonic Rings, but uses a move known as “quick step” to allow for fast movement left or right.
- Sonic Boost allows for a quick boost in speed (much like in Secret Rings) by collecting rings throughout the course, as well as a Sonic Dash move.
- Sonic’s classic moves like spin and homing attacks make a return.
- The game turns from day to night at times, day seeing Sonic in his usual form and at night players will slow down, brawl, and manipulate objects…
- In Unleashed players will also use the Nunchuck in some form (presumably for analogue movement)
- New robot creatures developed by eggman, some darker elements and some colossal beasts (one would be about 7m tall)
- Developed from scratch to be a completely new take on Sonic.
- Interview with lead game designer Yoshihisa Hashimoto tomorrow. |
Two steps forward, one step backwards. *sigh* _________________
