Hey, at least it's one step forward. Although if you have to use Shadow to throw Silver at Were-Sonic to cure him then all will be forgiven for now. Laughing

Hehehehehehe.... thats a good one unknown.XD They would call it the Silver "bullet" Attack.XD (Hey wait, Doesn't a silver bullet kill a werewolf, not turn it back to normal?)

I hope that you can play as mutiple players. What I mean is, I hope you don't just play as Sonic, but also as everyone else. I also want to see Sonic go beserk....

I believe that this plot might work for two reasons:

1) We get to see the beastly side of Sonic, which we have never seen before.

2) Being able have Sonic smash everything to oblivion XD

I have gotten over the werehog-phobia a bit, but not much.><;

EDIT: Oh, and I found a picture of the machine. http://s227.photobucket.com/albums/dd201/1cybermage1/sonic/?action=view&current=4.jpg Oh, noes it a trap! O.O

SegaDawg wrote:

Having worked in the video game industry for closing in on a decade, I've heard a lot of common misconceptions from my friends and family regarding exactly what it is that I do as my job.  The most common one seems to be: You just get to sit around and play video games all day, don't you?

The short answer is no, I don't; not even close, unfortunately.

But that doesn't mean I don't get to play games at all; on the contrary, most of the time I'll get to play one of our titles well before it hits retail shelves.  Today, as an example, I got to play Sonic Unleashed on the 360 for about 15 minutes.

The game is far from complete, but most of the game elements are in place, and in some cases its just a matter of polish and tweaking to get the gameplay to work correctly.  In other cases, there's more development that needs to be done, but since the games not due to ship until late in the year, theres still a ton of time to iron out the details, both large and small.

I got to see three different levels being played, and then got to try one of the levels myself.  Here are my initial impressions, keeping in mind that there are still aspects of the game that we won't discuss until a later time:

<li>There's speed, and lots of it.  Those of you wanting 2D; you've got it.  Those of you wanting 3D, well, you've got it too.  Each perspective brings its own challenges.</li>

<li>The gameplay itself on the level I played really felt like classic Sonic.  There's rings, there's bumpers, there's loops, there's jumping; but there's also a few other things in there as well that add to the experience.</li>

<li>The level I played had multiple paths so you'll be encouraged to play each level several times over and try to find the fastest path or the most rings you can.</li>

<li>There was a cool section in 3D perspective where Sonic has to use a quick-step to the left or right to avoid multiple obstacles in his path.  This is done with a button-push, not with the stick, so it's an almost-instant jump left or right without breaking stride.  Pretty cool.</li>

<li>The landscape and environments look great and there are some things there that Sonic can interact with.</li>

<li>A couple of the sections felt a lot like a roller coaster.</li>

<li>Not all the bumpers work in Sonic's favor.</li>

Overall, even though it was one level, it was a blast and I would have played it a lot more if I'd had the opportunity.  The gameplay style of this particular level; a style that comprises a good portion of the overall game; is going to make a lot of old-school Sonic fans really happy. The little blue guy gets going so fast sometimes that it's truly difficult to keep !

Thats all I can really say at the moment, but I wanted to throw it out there to wet your whistle on a Friday afternoon.  Have a good weekend!

EDIT Saturday 4/26:
It's a gorgeous day in the Bay Area so I don't want to spend too much time on work stuff, but after seeing the flurry of comments here and on various boards and blogs, I wanted to clarify some things.

One: I know you guys have a ton of questions about the game, but please keep in mind that there are aspects of the title; ranging from environments to characters to gameplay; that haven't been officially announced yet.  There's a lot about the game that I still don't know about myself.  So, don't take it personally, but please understand that your questions will be answered in due time, and for various reasons I ca't address some of the things that are being asked.  (Not to mention that if I did answer every question, I wouldn't have enough time to do all the other work on my plate!)

Two: I only played one level.  I played for 15 minutes, mainly because I kept dying over and over.  Right now the controls are ultra-sensitive (this will be refined in the coming months) and not having played before, it was really easy for me to mis-time a jump or fall off the path to my doom.  But for the 15 minutes I played, I had a lot of fun.

Third and perhaps most important: Yes, I am a SEGA employee.  This means that of course there will be a bias in whatever I write about any of our games.  And yes, as someone else commented, early builds of games almost always get positive reviews, at least in the gaming press, to say nothing of reviews from employees of the company that makes the game!

That said: You Sonic fans are a very loyal and rabid fanbase, and you deserve a great game.  Unleashed right now, has the potential to be that game.  Thing is, its not going to ship for a half-year at least, which is a long time; and that means your hands-on stories from the gaming press wont show up for quite a while.  But I work here, and I got my own hands-on yesterday, and I had a good time with it.  I figured giving you guys a few tidbits to tide you over, even if its from an official company source like myself, is better than just giving you complete radio silence until our next big PR announcement.

So take it for what it is: one man's impressions of an early build, nothing more.  I haven't seen well over 90% of what the game has to offer, and when I do finally see the rest (and I get the go-ahead from our execs), I'll tell you a lot more.  For right now, feel free to keep discussing what I wrote, and again, trust that your questions will be answered in due time, in most cases long before the game is due to ship.  But there's still a long way to go, so please keep that in mind.

Happy gaming!

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. I like some of the things that he mentioned, but others turn me off...

EDILITO:

- split of 3d to 3d side-scrolling action is about 50/50
- hub areas for story return once again
- Wii version is not using the same engine as PS3/360, but the team is working hard to duplicate the look as closely as possible
- mix of speed and platforming
- Wii version is different in stage design and controls
- coding and stages for Wii version is being handled by Dimps, who was responsible for Sonic Rush/Sonic Rush Adventure
- Tomoya Ohtani from Sonic Rush will be the sound director

Well, they seem to be trying. That's a good thing. And they may not put it out half done like 06. Which is what they did for that game.

You make that your self? It's pretty good. Not what I saw but it is pretty funny. I think I saw a joke like that on Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Gameplay footage has arrived:

http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14242719/sonic-unleashed/videos/sonic_unleased_trailer_061608.html

It looks beautiful and really razzle-dazzle, almost intense even. I'm liking the timed button sequences and the slower maneuvering areas...

But I can't help but notice that Sonic was moving so fast that whoever was playing missed three different shortcuts; shortcuts I didn't even realize were there until I'd watched the video through several times.

Oh wow, that looks amazing. If I had a Wii, the graphics alone would make this a Day 1 buy.

Yeah. Some of us have higher hopes then others about this game. So let's hope it's good.

The Wii version is supposed to have adapted graphics due to hardware (Dimps is working on that... may be a good thing). But I may need to buy an X360 to enjoy this full.

...SO PRETTY. ;_____;

Let's just hope they don't rush things as they usually do. -.-

I haven't played Sonic in a pretty long time. Not to mention that I've never played an original canon game before... I suck at only looking at sequels.

That's funny. You need to play them. You can get a lot of them real cheap on compilations disks.

Now that was a really good video showcasing some of the gameplay elements that will be seen in the final product. That is the kind of speed that Sonic needs to have so I know that Sega/Sonic Team are doing a really good job so far. I'm just hoping that the camera issue that has plagued them since Sonic Adventure doesn't show up as that could ruin the overall experience to some degree.

The 3D Sonic games I haven't played much of seeing as I am a fan of the original games that appeared during the Genesis/Game Gear era, yet I have watched the recent games so I could see myself playing this one for quite some time.

It looks quite awesome...I'm just not digging the sound effects. They sound so inorganic when compared to Sonic's speed.

When he crashes into a robot and sends it flying; you shouldn't hear *clunk clunk* it should be exploding metal and stuff!

Just remember, Speed isn't the only thing about a Sonic game. That's just what Sonic does.

Sonic Team is out of their minds.

Unless the speed stages are entirely push-button/timed-response oriented, then there is not a chance that the average gamer could control that thing. It moves way too bloomin' fast to keep up with, let alone steer with any degree of precision.

Now that I got that out of my system...

I'm not dead set against the WereHog notion. It looks moderately interesting, (although I'm still scratching my head over just why we need a brawler in a Sonic game) and possibly even fun. If ST can keep them from being linear, then they may be alright.

Still, I'm edging more towards Chronicles than Unleashed at this point.
