|
|
So. Now that it's April, the spring season has been pretty much initiated. Out with the old, in with the new. What is it that you've watched or are planning to follow?
What I've seen so far (names link to the ANN page for the series.
Kanokon:
Umm...to put it lightly, this almost makes Shuffle! look like a church. I mean, fanservice is great and all, but when that is what the strength of the series is based on, there seems to be problems. Oddly enough, based on my general run through the series prior to the season, this was the one that caught my eye the most. Now that I've watched an episode, I'm not all that impressed by the overall quality of the season--if it is going to be more of the same, and nothing about a story, then it seems that one should stay *far* from this series. The seiyuu, though good, don't seem to fit their roles--I think Mamiko Noto's talent is wasted (on a male who completely sounds like a woman), and Ayako Kawasumi doesn't sound so great as a tomboy-ish character. The animation earns a "meh", and the music isn't that great either.
Grade: D
Vampire Knight:
Seems okay so far. I don't think I've watched an anime yet that covers vampires, but this one seems to be a nice starter to me. The animation style is above average, and the characters a little shallow, but it's the first episode and I can forgive them for that. It's a little on the heavy side when it comes to being serious, but the story's concept seems to have potential. Yui Horie at the helm is also a nice plus. So far, it seems a little on the slow side, but I think this is one I will keep an eye on.
Grade: B
Zettai Karen Children:
Wow. This seems to be in contention for a crack filler of the season. It immediately projects an aura of silliness (who can forget SUPER BIG MAGNUM?), and the way the three heroines work with their superiors and the antagonists is reminiscent of Inukami!'s sort of humor. The animation studio, SynergySP (fresh off a year-long run of Hayate no Gotoku!), is behind this, and their animation style is quite good. With Haru--I mean Aya Hirano at the helm with Ryoko Shiraishi, the voice talent is quite apt for the situation. I'd definitely take a look at it to see if it is worth your time.
Grade: B+
Itazura na Kiss:
The story behind this seems contrived, to the point of me being able to predict what fate would befall the heroine about five minutes into the first episode. Nevertheless, the setup seems ripe for some sort of romantic comedy bantering between the leads. The setup's done as of the first episode, so I suppose I need one or two more episodes before I can see if I want to continue on it. Still, of the options for romantic comedy this season, this seems to be the most promising (if not the second most so.)
Grade: B
Special A:
Huh. An anime about the meritocracy in school. This certainly appeals to me. It has a sort of School Rumble feel to the comedy, and the characters (at least Hikari, the female lead) has the air-headedness of Tenma about her. Still, I'm tempted to continue to watch this, because the ever-present competition between Hikari, who is incidentally ranked second in the academy, and her admirer, who is ranked first, seem to tickle my fancy. Even though the admirer has that Karasuma-like omnipotence, I'm finding that I like Hikari's counterpart more than I did Karasuma in his series. This one seems to fill the comedic niche that Minami-ke left behind (I hope).
Grade: B+

Watching: Kurenai, Soul Eater, Kaiba, Yugioh 5Ds, Tower of Druaga, Library War, Wagaya no Oinari-sama, Kyouran Kaizoku Nikki.
Was watching Nabari no Ou too, but I dropped that. And I have a feeling that KKN won't be around on my list for long either. |

I'm mildly interested in watching Soul Eater, as the few chapters of the manga I did read were decent. Heavy Metal DETROIT or whatever looks rad, and it's pretty awesome that they've brought back Slayers. Other than that everything looks pretty generic and forgettable.
I tried watching Code Geass but...I just couldn't. It was like Gundam SEED with the most nauseating art style I've ever seen. _________________

I have a lot of new series this spring ^_^.
the list would be katekyo hitman reborn, shuffle!, shugo chara, and mahoromatic ^^. i watch a lot of it on crunchyroll, and only some of it on dvd that i got. as for manga, the third and fairy cube are really good, i can't wait for the next volumes to come out!! _________________

Seconded on Chi. Who knew an anime that lasts for three minutes an episode would be so captivating?
I've since dropped Itazura. It was pretty good, but it seemed to drag on, and it wasn't funny or amusing enough for me to continue. I've heard good things about some of the others of this season, so when I'm not buried in work or watching classes, I'll get back to it. _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! Well then I'm sure you'll be acting GAR! and saying that reason is pointless or something like that. And you get very upset after one episode. |

Well, I decided to pick up Code Geass. And finished the first season in a week. Well, complain about CLAMP's artstyle and Death Note parallels all you want, it's impossible to deny that the Knightmare fights are superbly animated. The story kind of fell apart at the end though.
Guess I'm on to R2 next. _________________ ' I don't care if the buzz isn't real- I can roleplay being drunk!'

What's the anime like, since I've been contemplating picking it up.
Anyway, my current shows are as follows:
One Piece
Code Geass R2 (Unintentional humor FTW!)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
When I finish Eva, I think I'll look into Outlaw Star. _________________ ' I don't care if the buzz isn't real- I can roleplay being drunk!'

I only just started and I've only seen the first fifteen episodes. It's got its funny moments and so far it's all pretty light-hearted.
However, based on a few plot summaries I've skimmed over, there should be plenty of action in the future.
The story's basically about this kid, Tsuna, who's being trained to be the next mafia boss of the Vongola family by Reborn, who is the current boss' best hitman.
So yeah. If you like mafia stuff, ComicX6, then Kakekyo Hitman Reborn! would be a good series for you. _________________

To be honest, I don't know what to think of it yet. I'm past the 'Monster of the Week' section, but I haven't quite gotten to the point where everything goes into full-blown psychoanalysis/wangst mode. The concepts are...interesting, to say the least. But I would appreciate it if Shinji didn't mumble half his lines.
I will admit however that I enjoyed Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0 immensely, mainly because the bootleg-quality torrent still managed to look artistically beautiful, and they somehow managed to make the battle with Ramiel look amazing. _________________ ' I don't care if the buzz isn't real- I can roleplay being drunk!'

The thing you have to realize about it is that it makes now sense. It helped the creator get through many issues he had. So all you can do is research is and pretend you understand it. Then move on to wondering why people like Rei so much. And also, Gendo is that horrible. |

I feel sorry for all of the people who were watching this back in the 90s and didn't have access to all the information on the Web that we have now. Because if it weren't for Wikipedia, I would have no idea what the hell's going on in the background of the series. I guess I'll post back with my full impressions when I complete the series, which won't be for a bit, since I'm away from my home computer.
As for why people like Rei... Well, she spawned a new character archetype for fanboys to get their jollies off on. That should be enough indication. _________________ ' I don't care if the buzz isn't real- I can roleplay being drunk!'

Rei is completely submissive until the End of Envangelion movies. This is what makes people so sadly attracted.
One doesn't necessarily have to understand the series and movies to enjoy it. I find the symbolism intruiging, the mecha action (especially in the new remake) to be quite enjoyable and the way characters explore issues (in many cases by accident or by avoiding them) is a refreshing change to a lot of what's out there. _________________
