timeline from start to end*possible spoilers**

so i think we can all pretty much agree that as far as series goes, its classic, X, Zero, and ZX (i haven't played Legends/Dash enough to know where that might fit).

there just seems to be huge debate about where the exe and RnR series are placed, as most people are content with leaving it as separate time line.

I personally believe that exe is the very first game in the time line thus far, now my basis for this only stands that the last names match up, Netto's Grandfather reveals that the family have a disposition of similar appearance as does Wily's, Rush and other pets were eventually introduced, and a few other minor details that can and probably will be argued.

my only statement amongst this chaos is lets see where RnR takes us, its already reveled that RnR is possibly the future of exe (though i havent played all the way through 2 yet so im a little fuzzy on the whole Mu thing.)

but if RnR really is the future of exe, and RnR 3 really is the last game, maybe they will use it to connect the two series to the other timeline, some stuff may be bunk... trust me... im even questioning my own saying this after they established a time link between RnR and exe instead of a Spatial link... but they are finally starting to connect the Zelda time line in parts so Megaman has hope

It was proven that EXE and RNR are a series of their own and haves no connection with the others what so ever. From what I was told.

Without going into great detail. I'll keep this extremely simple.

The classic Rockman series takes place in the time period of 200X AD also written as 20XX AD. The Rockman X series takes place in the time period 21XX AD, one hundred years later.

The EXE series takes place during the time period 200X / 20XX AD while the RnR series takes place during in the time period of 220X AD. Now the EXE series couldn't possibly take place before the original Rockman series since they take place in the same time period. And since the Ryuusei no Rockman series takes place two hundred years after the EXE series, it kind of makes it even harder that it would take place before the classic series or even the X series. Thus creating the two timelines.

The EXE and RnR series are more of a Parallel universe to the Classic series. In the classic series timeline we see the development of Robots and advanced AI. In the EXE timeline we see in development of the Internet and Program AI.

Currently the timelines goes like this

Timeline 1: Classic > X > Zero > ZX > Dash
Timeline 2: EXE > RnR

To answer your question about the connection between the EXE series and the RnR series. It has been official said that the RnR series takes place two hundred years after the EXE series. There are even clues in the first game that point to this and certain things in the second game that proof this statement.

In Ryuusei no Rockman 1, you got to meet Rockman.EXE and obtain his EXE Buster. In Ryuusei no Rockman 2, you find several dairies from Netto who turns out to be the person responsible for the Brother Band system that everyone currently uses in the RnR series.

huh. Dash is after ZX? never played it so thanks for clearing that up. i've been wondering about the 20XX thing myself.

ZXA should be placed after ZX right?
I never knew Dash was after ZX.
But if I'm not mistaken, Dash was created earlier than ZX, wasn't it?

Yes, but we're not going by the date they were created, we're going by the date of when the creators placed it into the continuity.

DASH was originally thought of as an AU of the X series, considering the "bad end" of X5, but the Perfect Memories book said that it took thousands of years after the Zero series, which happens after Zero places himself into stasis at an undetermined time.

Of course, DASH takes place SO long after the conclusion of Zero and probably ZX that there's really no connection to previous series, excluding the whole Irregular Hunters thing Elysium had going on in the series.

I'm pretty sure that the ZX series was supposed to be a bridge to the DASH era. In the first game Serpent talks about realizing Project Heaven, a society where Rockmen would rule over the people. Taking into account how both Trigger and Juno have a Rockman prefix to their names, I think it's safe to assume that the two Heavens are meant to be one and the same. The end of ZXA also hints at an apocalyptic event that would 'reset' the world. The flood maybe?

You can also take into account Girouette looking like the Master, but at this point, I view it as nothing more than the character designer having some fun, as the ZX series is full of Easter eggs from every Rockman series save Ryuusei.
