That's what everyone thought about Sega. Now they're making shoddy-to-decent games and cheapo PMPs.

Sega never knew what they were doing. They copied Nintendo's business model to create the Genisis and when the SNES started to outdo it, they blew all their money on useless attachments. I read they even mistook the Saturn's shipped numbers for sold. I swear, they were run by the Pointy Haired Boss.

Nintendo has lately been milking the Wii and DS. Though I hope not to imply that Nintendo's little ecosystem isn't a viable gaming platform, they're putting out way more cheap software toys than they should be, sometimes at the expense of developing actual games.

Those "cheap toys" are downmarket products and are extremely important. Nintendo's entire strategy is to bring in more gamers, and the current games sure aren't doing it. Too many barriers such as complex controls and time requirements. But now they have these simple games to start with and then they'll move on to the more sophisticated ones as they get more comfortable just like they did with the orignal DS. When this happens, the Wii series will go the way of Brain Training and there'll be many new gamers who are brought up on Nintendo's new values of interface and accessibility, instead of everyone else's graphics and processing speed.

Tachyon360 wrote:
It's really hard to say what the future might hold, only that it'll be interesting to see how things pan out.

Look to the past. When the NES was launched, it was up against the 16-bit Amiga and Commodore 64 game centric computers. The NES was called a fad and it's games "casual" by the hardcore gamers, the analysts, and the gaming magazines. But since it was aimed at the kids who couldn't get into the computer games due to complexity, installs, even reaching the keyboard, the NES destroyed them so utterly, it's been mostly forgotten that it had any competition when it first came out.

Now we got the Wii up against the HD PS3 and 360, and it's being called a fad and casual. And it's winning. History's repeating itself.

As for the DSi, this is part of the Blue Ocean strategy, which is to compete against disinterest. As stated in this interview, the Lite's sales have saturated in Japan so instead of a simple price, they're focusing it's design to appeal to the people who either chose not to get one, or even don't know what one is without losing the core focus of gaming.

As far as I am aware most of the shoddy titles are 3rd party titles; not exactly Nintendo's fault there.

So true, so true. They look at the simple games, think "Durr, casual games, uh hyuck! Uh hyuck!" and slap them together with no effort thinking that these so-called "casual gamers" will too stupid to tell the difference.

I'm so glad I became Malstrom fanboy.

Well you are right. The more people they get to play games the more money they get, the more games they can make. Or the better good games they can make. Seems simple.

I agree with everything you said Shadowbass. The NES came out before my time though, so I was definitely surprised to hear that Nintendo had "competition". And, battling against disinterest? I never thought of it that way.

Would it be okay if I linked to the website I got the info from, or would that be against the "no advertising fansites" rule, because Malstrom knows this stuff a hundred times better than I do.

I don't think it would be a problem ... just make sure to read the posting guidelines in the main forum. If you feel there's a sort of gray area, PM one of the mods or Ryouko herself.

You can change the hardward, but, to be honest, crappy software will continue to flow from Nintendo.

attn: nintendo:

you should probably focus on making consistently making quality games like you used to and making quality games in general, instead of relying on your waggletech and .3 MP cameras. GG nintendo

RIP Nintendo, NES-Wii. We hardly knew ye or ye good software!

But hey, at least they'll still have the money to try again next generation!

DS: DSi = GB: GBC

The DSi is going to get its own share of exclusive titles, and I'm pretty certain the system specs clock differently from the DS phat/lite. Soon enough, we'll have mainstream games for DSi exclusively, but that will have a completely unnecessary feature that will require the DSi. I.E. next Pokémon game, that uses the camera for trading with friends, or some MarioKart game that has the player upload a picture of himself as a referral. Or something even more stupid: "take a picture to use as an icon for your savefile".

Super Princess Peach and Mario and Luigi 2:PiT, I'm looking at you two. Those were GBA games forced to the DS to push the sales. Nintendo has a back-history of these.

Truly, I'm not amused. I feel actually kind of gipped, considering that some DS games that will use the hardware slot are not going to be compatible (i.e. Guitar Hero on Tour), and atop of that, how Nintendo chose to make a new system in a 5 years span, which is far too little for a handheld. The GBA was no longer supported on the software side within a year from the DS launch, same for the old GB and GBC, and GBA and GBC, and don't talk about GBmicro, it was crap and Nintendo too knew it.

I sure hope I'm wrong. As do several millions people that bought a DS these years, and that will otherwise need to buy a brand new one.

I sincerely hope you're being sarcastic. Most Mario Sports/Party games aside (though some of them are actually quite a bit of fun), all of Nintendo's systems have had quality first-party titles.

As did all of the major platforms. The question is, how many does Nintendo have, and how many do all the rest?

Nintendo truly has the largest amount of first party franchises that people would buy their systems for. The others often rely on third parties.

Come on. Why people buy Nintendo systems at all? For the third party support, or for their first party games like Mario, Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Metroid and more?

Thank you Dan and Heat. I wanted to say something but I didn't know how to say it. And this is just a different DS.

Just to not repeat somebody else's words, I'll just show who said it best...

http://www.duelinganalogs.com/

"Nope, don't expect the DS and DSi to be sharing the shelves together for long. That's probably the reason why Nintendo is delaying the release of the DSi North America... so they can get rid of there stock of Nintendo DSs."

I didn't think of that last part of the statement, and all in all, it seems the most logical conclusion.

Yeah, I shoulda specified third-party titles. I should've also said "publishing" third party games. My bad! My judgements against the DSi still stand, however.

The only reason I'd think about getting this system is if DSWare comes out with some really amazing stuff, but that SD Card functionality might be interesting as well. The only question is, would it support SDHC?

Frankly it's not as though Microsoft and Sony don't have a ton of shovel-ware on their consoles. Peoples attention is simply drawn to the Wii and ton the DS, because they are doing so well at the moment.

Especially PS2 and Xbox, but PS3 and 360? Not as much as the Wii or DS. =/

Can't really argue in defense of the third-parties. :/ I've noticed that, for atleast the first year that the Wii and DS were out, the third parties were content to make quick and dirty cash-ins rather than take the time and effort to make a quality title.

And the PS2 did have a ton of shovelware, the most popular console of every generation does. The NES had a ton of shovelware, the SNES had its fair share and the PS1 got LOADS. It gets even worse if (like the Wii and PS1) the system introduces new technology; all the third-parties become eager to crank out their own version of whatever cool new game takes advantage of the new technology, WiiSports-like minigame fests for the Wii, 3D fighters for the PS1.

Personally I would attribute that to frankly less numbers. I'm sure percentage-wise they do not fare any better at all. I can say when I went to my local shopping-centre (Mall for you in the US), that the PS3 and XBox360 lineups had about 7 or 8 decent games on the shelves and half of those were multi-platform releases.
