Episode 1
Episode 2 rewatch party is Sunday, Feb. 15, at 9:00pm Central time (GMT-6)
Okay, guys, we've met some wonderful characters so far. There's the childish but brave Netto, and his powerful new navi, Rockman. This looks pretty good so far! I think Meiru has a thing for Netto, but then Dekao likes Meiru, too. :D
But who were these mysterious men causing the fires? What were they trying to accomplish? Ooh, I wonder what's going to happen next :O I guess we'll find out more on Sunday, when we all watch it together! :3

...Dekao's room is cleaner than my room :<
OH MAN! IT'S THE CAT! XD I remember that cat! Ufufuu~
And man, I like how
OH MASA <3
Man, it's amazing how many characters they're cramming into this episode. Along with Netto, Dekao, Meiru, and Masa, they're introducing Saloma and Miyuki and Elec Hakushaku. Ten minutes in, and we haven't even seen Rockman yet.
There's a lot going going on in this episode, and yet it doesn't feel rushed or cluttered. I never even realized how well-written this series is! A nice pace where we get to learn about the cast.
...You know, we got to the commercial break with only one mention of Rockman. What's up with that? XD
Oh, THERE he is. ...15 minutes into the episode. I suppose the writers wanted to focus on the realistic parts of the show first? It was mentioned in the episode 1 topic that one great thing about EXE is how realistic it tends to be.
...YEAAAAH IT'S ELECMAN. Oh, what a great entrance.
You know, the puppy saving Netto is probably the only thing I remembered about this episode, heh.
...God, Elec Hakushaku is insane. I love this guy. XD
"Netto-kun, the brakes!" Jumping into an uncontrollable train, and then not thinking of the brakes... Netto, you are a silly boy ;D
2CM! XDDD I remember that... AND THE WATER HOSES. XD
All in all, a really good ep. Lots of time to get to know the humans, and as we know, the navis come later. I really like the pacing in this one... and somehow, the animals biting Dekao get funnier each time. X3
Next week, we meet Yaito! And Madoi-chan~ Are you ready?
Edit: One thing I do really like is how un-formulamatic these early episodes are. In Axess and beyond, they're like a monster of the week show -- Netto meets the enemy, cross-fuses, beats them, day is saved. In the early episodes, though, the Navi of the Week tends to be the secondary problem, while Netto has to solve the main problem in the real world in the meantime. I think that's another thing that turned me off during Axess, and drew me to the original. _________________

You're right; Axess/Stream/Beast just didn't seem to have any creativity behind them. They had way too many episodes that could've come right out of Power Rangers, too many gimmick episodes and too much of a focus on either Netto or secondary characters; Rockman's supposed to be one the stars of the show, yet he got stuck on the sidelines more often than not.
But that's a discussion for another time; onto the first episode of EXE that I ever saw and arguably the best.
Everything about this episode comes together in such a wonderful way, and with so many funny moments. I mean, which is better: Dekao being hospitalized by a robo cat chomping on his leg? The ensuing "OUCH!!!!" running gag? Netto and Meiru's reactions? (which, by the way, fit their characters perfectly: Meiru politely tries to contain herself, while Netto doesn't even BOTHER XD) Meiru rejecting Netto with that rather painful-looking elbow to the gut? Masa's calcium rant? His accidental enragement of Dekao? The kid just standing there as a giant clock hand is hurtling towards him? Hakushaku's imitation of the Back to the Future scene? The reactions of the people as the subway train blasts past their station? Rockman slashing off all of Elecman's coil-things at once? (Beating his Elecsword with a vanilla Sword, I might add?) Netto getting blasted by those hoses? (Bit of an over-reaction, wasn't it? I mean, there was only a bit of smoke coming out of the control panel, yet those hoses put out enough water to drown a freakin' elephant.) Rockman somehow finding the time to remember Miyuki's prediction and Netto's subsequent reaction? (Then again, HE wasn't the one getting drowned by the rescue crew...)
Oh, and technically Rockman appears five minutes in, commenting on Netto's dense-ness. XD (I also think it's pretty neat how they set their PETs up so it's almost like Rockman and Roll are sitting at the table with them.)
There's only two things about the episode that I'm not entirely solid on. The first is Netto's comment when they're visiting Dekao, something like "rats seem to be getting bigger these days since they get more food". Is he calling Dekao a rat, or is he implying that the rats are having their way with Dekao's fridge while the cat's latched onto his leg? (That cat's got some serious dedication too! Dekao's running around and the thing's STILL holding on even at the end of the episode.) The other is the fact that, on a subway train with what looks like a good few intelligent adults, they let the 10-year old schoolkid have their way with the controls of their runaway vehicle. XD I know it's the sort of "for the sake of the plot" thing, but it always just sort of sticks out for me every time I watch it.
Still the best episode ever, though. _________________ Stuck In The Middle With You; a Metroid and Halo crossover

Episode two, here we go! Kaze wo tsukinukete kimi to~! :D I love this song. It never gets old.
So... if what Dekao's saying is right and they're going for a rematch (presumably against whoever damaged Gutsman), did Gutsman lose his arm fighting Rockman, or is this the night after Fireman's attack? Either way, rematch against Rockman makes sense, but less so if this is the damage from Fireman's battle. Not to mention I don't remember Gutsman losing an arm against Fireman. This must be at least a couple of days later.
kitty! :D
Dekao's room... doesn't look all that great. Other than the clutter, there doesn't seem to be much there.
OMG I never noticed this before! Chip art for Mega Guts Punch on Dekao's wall!
Evil kitty. >D
Netto and Meiru checkin' on Dekao in the hospital... even though he doesn't want them to. And that's for good reason! Dekao is shaaaamed. I love how Meiru's trying not to laugh. And Netto's just looking at evil!kitty with this happy little smile on his face. XD
Netto is in ur hospital room, pickin up ur girl. With this creepy look on his face. XD "Dream on!" Netto is pwned. Dekao pwns himself laughing.
Saloma! Who has pretty teacups and pretty plants. The Navis get little stands, so they can admire the plants and be part of the conversation too!
Meiru seems a lot more... I don't know, mature? Aware? Streetwise? ...than she does in later series. Maybe I just need to give it another watch, because that's a strange thing to notice, but... yeah.
When they start talking about the World Three, Saloma gives them a little look. Now that made me think of the Net Agents.
Cool WWW music is still cool. ELEC! :D :D
Netto and Meiru sic Masa on Dekao. XD And now they're going to spy on Mariko-sensei! Admit it, anyone would.
Masa can't hypnotize the cat with his fish juju. Dekao is all grr over Netto and Meiru... which leads to his second pwning! Don't strangle the messenger.
Some little kid nearly gets skewered as Elecman's reign of terror begins! Evil appliances of doom!
Elec Hakushaku is his normal crazy self. It's Elecman, subs, not 'Electricman'. >_>
"What if your Net Navi..." ...was deleted? Is this some foreshadowing?
Dekao managed to track Netto and Meiru down with an evil cat AND an evil dog on his leg! Now that's determination.
Evil dog left bite marks in Dekao's leg and stole Mariko's purse! :O
LEET SKATES! Dekao is pwned again.
Netto and Meiru chase the dog on their leet skates and leet scooter. Way more cool/charming than an Enzan limo. :D They barely make it on the subway!
Now the dog is good again. Yay. :D But the speed is goin' up! I think Elecman was hitching a ride with the dog. It makes sense considering the timing of its reverting to normal and the subway speed-up.
Subway driver can't take his electricity, I see.
The officials are helpless--send in the kids!
ROCK ON! Elec is crazy.
Netto breaks some glass. The officials aren't so helpless after all--they keep the train (208) from colliding with the other one.
"Can you control this, Netto?" Of course he can, he takes subway driving lessons in his spare time. The officials have averted disaster for now--time for Rockman to plug in!
That's a lot of viruses. Rockman's lookin' awesome.
But now Elecman's coming for him!
Rockman may not be able to stop the train, but he's got a plan!
Ow. That looked painful. Elecman looks cool. And those subs are still calling him 'Electricman'. Rockman's not doing so hot--Elecman's just too fast. "You're finished--OW!" Elec rocks on. The guitar seems to be like his PET--I think it's giving commands somehow, like how you see a lot of early EXE Operators pushing buttons. Elecman delivers the finishing blow... but Netto's here now! "This is where the battle really begins!"
Dang, early!EXE Swords are lethal. Elec plugs his Navi out.
Don't get too happy, Netto, you're still about to crash. That sound effect as they pass the station bugs me--they used it when the CD players were firing CDs during Elecman's attack, and it's just too cartoony. It doesn't really fit here. With a little tutoring from Rockman and a little intuition, Netto halts the train... missing the wall by 2 cm! Whew. The official people douse the fire... and get Netto soaked as well. Miyuki was right! Not that Netto's happy about it.
Glomp! He blushes before she even gets to him. Actually, Dekao, it's Meiru who's got her hands all over Netto, not the other way around. Looks like the dog remembers him!
All in all, this episode is just as great as the last one. :D |

Count Elec and Masa-san for the win! They crack me up. Hey, at least in this episode Rockman is still the hero. I was appalled by how little we saw him in the later seasons. I watched this ep not too long ago, so I'm going on a semi-new but not fresh memory of the episode. The PET's on the table is another one of those things that gets neglected later on, like the floating screen of doom that Roll used. This was back in the beginning when the EXE series was still somewhat mysterious and had that charm that was lost later on. Ah, I miss those times.
The first episodes I saw were 3 and 4. I found them on some random website way back in the day and spent forever finding what the heck would play an .rm file. Took ages to download them, and I never stopped looking for more episodes. I didn't know how to use IRC, even though I tried. XD Oh... *sniff*... the nostalgia's getting to me.
I shall no doubt continue to comment as more thoughts on this episode come to me. (I am yet again putting off watching it. I've got homework i should be doing) |
