... Ha ha ha, so, funny story: I wake up this morning (Around 11:30 AM.
Hooray Floridian Spring Break!) and go on the computer, do my rounds,
etc. etc. I got onto Hotmail and see I have a new e-mail asking me if
I want to upgrade my Internet Explorer 7 to the newer version 8. So I
go for the upgrade.
(Yes, I still use Internet Explorer. At least, I used to. Read on.)
Now, the upgrade went fine. No viruses or problems were seen, so the
e-mail was legitimate.
My problem is that my computer apparently thinks the new IE 8 is a bad
program, and is now preventing me from using it. (Before you ask, I'm
posting this through a PortableApps version of Firefox that I have on my
USB drive.) It keeps saying something about a 'Data Execution Prevention'
program that's apparently the source of my problem. Supposedly, it prevents
malicious code/viruses/etc. from running on a computer. Apparently, it
thinks that this includes the new version of Internet Explorer. I've already
checked and made sure to set it so that it 'protects' programs except IE,
but it's still coming up with the same stupid message.
So, my real question: Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix
this problem?
By the way, yes, I am considering just deleting Internet Explorer off of my
computer and installing Firefox. Just wanted to see if there was any way
of saving poor old IE first. _________________ MegaMan Kilobit

I honestly didn't think people still used Microsoft's steaming crap heap of a browser.
You could try nuking DEP altogether and installing Windows Defender in its stead. Poking at it with WD might do something. _________________ *placeholder* |

Or...you could just keep using Firefox. _________________

Well, I've already tried getting rid of DEP. Can't figure out how to delete it. :/
Guess I'll just get Firefox then. Better than nothing. ^^; _________________ MegaMan Kilobit

Yeah. I use Firefox. I had to install it on my aunt's computer since I couldn't get it to work with signing up for an email. Just use Firefox and leave IE there. |

It kinda sounds like you're not too enthusiastic about Firefox. There are alternatives that you might be interested in trying, like Flock, Wyzo, Chrome, Safari (the 4.0 beta is pretty slick), and Opera.
Then there's a more long term option of getting a Mac, which in addition to not having to fuss around with bad design and engineering, would also net you Camino, Konqueror, and Epiphany to try out. _________________ *placeholder* |

I'm one of those people who gets frustrated by those who call IE crap. Yes, it has it's problems, but I've found that Firefox really isn't all that better. And in terms of security, just be careful and don't click on any ad's or unkown links. XD
That said, I too eventually got sick of IE's slowness and switched to Chrome. I think everyone's infatuation with Firefox is merely a bandwagon thing, it's not really THAT great. |

Firefox was the first to break down the rut that browsers fell into after Microsoft dominated the market. People got familiar with it, and it still does offer the richest selection of extensions among modern browsers. _________________ *placeholder* |

Yeah. So basically, anything that isn't IE seems to be what people say.
But Mozilla was first so they get mentioned first. |

Personally, I go by the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The only reason I really used IE was because I could surf the net just fine. Sure, it was a bit slow sometimes, but still.
Of course, now that my computer hates IE 8 and I have no way of turning off DEP (I've searched, apparently there's no easy option to remove or turn it off.), I'm now using Firefox. The only reason I sounded not-too-enthusiastic because... well, I knew nothing about Firefox. But I've gotten used to it by now. ^_^
So, yeah, guess there was no way of saving IE? Ah well. At least there are other options. Thanks anyways guys! _________________ MegaMan Kilobit

Well, see, the thing is that IE is broken. Even if it runs.
It doesn't respect W3C standards, it mangles code every which way it likes, its UI is a mess, it's terribly insecure, and its progress is slow. _________________ *placeholder* |

I think Firefox's UI is a mess. That's why I don't use it. Chrome FTW! |

I tried Chrome but something about it just got on my nerves. I could never pinpoint what it was. As for FF, it's not perfect to be sure but it does work fine and I know how to use it; which is a good reason to continue to use a browser. A lot of people don't care if a program isn't optimised after all. _________________

And you can "trick-out" Firefox and possibly the others with different add-ons. I have a bunch on mine and it's quite useful. Make sure you get IETab. Runs like IE but in a Firefox way. |

Well, for one, it's a browser built by engineers who think they're designers. Chrome irks me for four principle reasons.
First, it's a hell of a resource hog. Running each tab as a separate process might have made sense back in the days of 56K modems, but a session manager on a single-process browser takes up a lot fewer resources.
Second, I don't appreciate how it replaced the title bar with the tab bar. The whole point of a title bar is to see what it is you're doing at a glance, and with Chrome, it becomes more and more difficult as you open more and more tabs, especially with pages from the same website.
Third, I hate how advanced features are tucked away in a labyrinth of nested menus. If they were trying to mimic Apple, they failed miserably here. It's not about hiding away the advanced features. It's about presenting the most important features as straightforwardly as possibly while neatly organizing the less used features just beneath the surface.
Finally, I hate how the homepage reflects your recent browsing history. I would much prefer to pick the sites I want quick access to, like Opera did with Speed Dial.
Besides that, there's little incentive for me to leave Firefox on Windows and Linux. Opera may be fast, but it suffers from nasty feature bloat, and Chrome and Safari (on Windows) or Epiphany (on GNOME) just don't offer enough features. Firefox hits a sweet spot with its strong support for extension developers and the flexibility of its UI (especially if you're willing to jump into editing your userChrome.css file).
On Mac, of course, I jump between Safari and Camino, depending on whether I need WebKit or Gecko. Cocoa FTW. _________________ *placeholder* |
