Hey, just thought of starting a movie related topic.

My bro and I have this unusual past-time of collecting 'outdated' horror/giant monster movies. Think of movies that were usually created between 1940 and 1960. Black and white, mediocre acting, terrible special effects, lame monsters, funky stories. That kind of stuff. If you have watched the cartoon series "Angry Beavers": the movies Norbert and Daggett watch are perfect examples of that XD

So I wanna open this topic for people to discuss horror movies and maybe give us some suggestions of movies to get.But ofcourse, you can discuss horror movies you have watched, be they old, new, good OR bad.

So I'll give a kick start of a few recommendations:

Bad (but interesting) old horror movies:

-Attack of the Giant Crab Monsters (Strings galore, you can see ALL the strings on the creatures. Also... worst ending EVER XD)
-The Giant Claw. (It was awarded a prize for worst monster design. 'Nuff said? ^^; )
-Night of the Lepus (Mutant Killer Bunnies XD)

Good old horror movies:

-Island of Terror (These creatures are pretty original. Also... the way people die in this movie is very uncomfortable ^^; )
-House on Haunted Hill (Vincent Price is in it XD And it's definetely a house I wouldn't wanna spend the night in)
-Killer Shrews (Didn't watch this one, but my bro says it's good?)

We also occassionally watch modern horror movies. Although I usually regret watching those since I get spooked REALLY easily. Why do I watch horror movies then? It's morbid curiosity -w-

Anyways, a selection of the creepier modern horror movies I have watched has got to be Signs and The Mist. These two really freaked me the heck out.

Okay, this post has gotten far too long. But I will update on any unusual movies should I come across them.

Anybody got any good stories on horror flicks? :3

I'm not sure if giant monster movies qualify as the same thing as horror movies. I mean, I've watched almost every Godzilla movie made and not one of them was scary. On the other hand, all I've ever seen are Godzilla movies so maybe I should expand my horizons a bit.

In any case, I'm very disappointed in the horror movie genre. These days, horror movies are all about graphic blood and gore. Sure, it'll scare some people, but it's just absolutely weak. There's just nothing really scary I find about gore. Psychological horror films are the real scary ones. They're scary because they're not explicit about a lot of things; they leave a lot to the imagination. And the way I've always seen it, nothing is scarier than what your imagination can conjure.

In my opinion, the SAW and Hellraiser (especially the third) series are good examples of horror. Some may say these are cliche, but this is just me speaking.

The only horror movie I've ever really liked was Cloverfield, which Nobi-chan introduced me to. XD Such a wonderfully done movie.

Cloverfield was good, I just though when they showed the monster at the end in the park before bombing the place, ruin the whole mood and setting, seriously who looks up with the camera at something like that and holds that perfect shot, but that's just me Razz

On Horror Movies, all the serial killer slasher flicks aren't scary appealing to me, they are like fun action/suspense movies to me.

Though I will say the ones that mess with your mind and make you think the whole time but then hit you with a surprise twist are the best....My favorite was the first Saw movie

First time seeing it, I sat there and wonder who was the mastermind behind the whole ordeal Was it the Janior? Was it Danny Glover? Could it be actually Gary Elwes? WHO IS IT! and then BAM! the ending no one saw coming! It was the "dead" guy in the middle of the room!, Movies with those endings just out of nowhere, shock me and surprise me completely and just open my eyes and I just go WOW! Perfectly played.

Though Saw II alright, I loved how III & IV went and worked together, but it should of ended there. Personally, it should of end at the first one and left it at such a high note!

There's a few new horror flicks coming out:

"Sorority Row"
"The Collector"

And I believe "The Orphan" counts as well...then there's "30 Days of Night" and that Swedish vampire movie?

It's true that horror and giant monster movies are not the same thing, indeed. But we began watching (lame) giant monster movies and that sort of escalated in watching (lame) horror movies. Hence why we put them together.

Yes, it seems that gorefest/slasher movies take up a lot of the horror genre. And quite frankly, we tend to leave the very bloody ones out of our collection. SAW is definetely a series we will not watch therefore. So to be more correct of term, I think 'thriller/paranormal' would befit our interests better.

More examples of rather interesting old horror movies are The Fiend Without A Face (about brainsucking creatures) and X The Unknown (about a radioactive killing entity) which was made by Warner Bros. actually. The movie called The Brain That Wouldn't Die caught our attention mainly because of its title, but didn't turn out as amazing as we thought XD

Oh I can definetely sympathize. When it comes to getting spooked, I am pretty easy. So when it comes to horror movies, I need to be in the presence of at least one more person XD Guess I watch these flicks as a way to desensitize a little ^^;

Ehh. Horror and monster movies aren't my cup of tea. As far as the latter goes, it's always just another Godzilla clone (or yet another tired Godzilla sequel). As for the former, it's usually an ugly gore-fest with a flimsy story line, a mere stone's toss away from a faux snuff film.

There are occasional good horror movies (though I have yet to see a good monster movie). American Psycho and Silence of the Lambs were notably good examples, and I have high hopes for Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll. Beyond that, it's just not my cup of tea.

I am trying to get my hands on some Gamera movies. Gamera is a lot like Godzilla (a giant turtle monster who fights for justice and stuff XD)

Yeah, it's difficult to find a horror movie that actually has a good storyline and characters. It seems that the typical slash-gore horror flicks all have (teenager) characters you don't care about. But an exception has got to be The Mist. You do care at least about the characters and the story is very well built. But then again, it's by Stephen King. Not much can go wrong when it concerns his movies XD

Alright people, if you want a good laugh at a pretty darn mediocre sci-fi/space movie, watch Teenagers From Outer Space. The acting is terribly stiff (but highly amusing), the special effects are near zero and the giant alien monster is hilarious.

Not joking, it's a blast XD

I remember watching From Dusk till Dawn, Piranha and Leprechaun. But I've forgotten them, for better or worse.

Although if I were to name a contemporary and a modern horror movie, it would be Night of the Creeps and Silent Hill. These are my favorites in both categories btw. But I have to say, while Silent Hill the movie brought psychological horror with it, the elements they used from the game they based the adaptation from were improperly executed and considered a gail in the eyes of the game fans.

There is also this one movie where they get invited to a movie theater named metropole ans weird stuff start to happen when they wear some kind of a mask or something. Anybody have an idea to what that movie might be?
