There are obviously different types of anime drawing styles. What I'm wondering is if there are any specific names for different styles. For example, shows like EXE and Pokemon have a very different atmosphere than the really "line-y" ones that remind me of that one painting: http://iconicionic.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/the_great_wave_off_kanagawa.jpg
I doubt there are specific names for styles. Like, in the US Nickelodeon has a type of art style, and Disney has a style, but those aren't really good categories. Does EXE fall into anything more specific than "Cartoony?"

I'm not very sure what the hell you're asking, but I'm very certain the answer is "The style used is the style of the artist for the series, and nothing more."
Because, you know, it's the obvious answer. |

Generally speaking, style -is- categorized by the person/company. I mean, you can go by certain characteristics to make a general category, but it would probably end up really broad.
Of course, not everyone does all of their work in the same style, but I think it's still easier to go by how a person approaches a certain characteristic over the characteristic itself. _________________ Greatness is achieved through the pursuit of greatness. |

Yes, it's obvious that an artist will have a characteristic style. I meant are the Japanese words for different types of anime. Like, is there a word for extremely bubbly ones (Chibi?), realistic ones, basic cartoony, exaggerated cartoony... noir? XD
Like, I dunno. Ones aimed at 10 year old boys. (Shounen?) And then ones aimed at young adults...
You do know what I mean when I say Nickelodeon has a distinct style, right? |

Hm, I'm trying to understand what you mean, but for some reason I'm just not understanding... When you say Nickaloean has a distinct style, what do you mean? There are lots of shows in Nickaledan that have many different art styles. For example, Jimmy neutron uses 3D animation, Making Fiends is cartoon, SpongeBob is cartoon... But even tough Making Fiends and Spongebob are both cartoons, each one was made by different artists. It's just that artists' style, so they don't really have a name.
When something is drawn (like an anime/tv show cartoon) usually characters who are big and bubbly, simple in design, and/or have big eyes usually catch the attention of young children (such as chibi). Such is with the anime Chi's Sweet Home: http://208.71.113.236/final/2/4/2401589/171709.jpg
There is no particular name for it. It's just simply an artists' style of drawing/animating. Unless you're talking about something completely different?? O_o I don't really understand. D: _________________ My art blog: http://annamariacoppi.blogspot.com/

There are a few general styles you could name (Shoujo or gag manga, for example), but as the others said there's still gonna be a lot of variation from the individual artist.
And none of them really apply to EXE. |

Well, when I think about style...really only two come to mind.
There's the really detailed style, like you see in EXE, and then there's that kind of flat, simple style that flows very well. The sixth One Piece movie is animated this way, and it's one of my favorite styles. _________________

Speaking of styles, who was the lead artist of Axess and Beast? They were pretty amazing (at east to me) so far. _________________ Guernsey Adams Pierre

I'd like to know the main animators as well. Axess had a pretty cool style, but I thought Beast made everyone look pudgy (and a lot of stream too. Some of Stream had the movie look though and looked great.) Beast+ was more cartoony/cutesy but suited the series. |

Anime doesn't have sub genres of styles. In fact, Anime itself shouldn't really even be defined as a genre while I'm at it.
Anime just means animation, and in that context, there's a good handful of ways to define animation.
First there is Cel-shaded, then Flash, CGI, as well as stop motion where you have sub-genres like claymation. you could also use scientific devices and use those to make a unique type of animation.
by definition most of these styles of animation involve caricaturing the character. how the caricature looks is up to the individual artist. It should be noted that most Japanese cartoons will save time by having less frames animated, especially talking sequences which are just flaps to the mouth.
Compare this with shows like animaniacs. Rockman EXE, though it has fluid animation has less animated characters, and more stills, with value detail added on. Animaniacs will have less detail in value, but more fluid animation because even with the lack of detail or plot, the show has more time for frames.
So in a way, yes there are names for anime styles when you are using the correct term...but if you're using the fanboy americanized term that's used for commercial reasons...then no. |
