Okay, if you want the game to be 3/4 cutscenes. |

For someone who was so excited to announce the idea of a seemingly impossible community project, you sure are pessimistic about it. _________________ Avatar by Tabby (of my NetNavi, GuincoolMind.EXE) : : :

Pessimistic? No, I just don't think the story should be that involved. The idea is good, but if we use it, we'll just have to have the central concepts.
I've seen smaller stories kill projects. First we need a gameplay prototype, then we can worry about weaving in whatever story we have. |

I also think you should focus on planning the game before the story. all contributions are of course welcome but games are prone to omit large parts of the story as the scope of the game itself is subject to change. I'd personally not want to see a "don't trust anyone" one man show, as a world like that sounds pretty barren. _________________ hi mom. |

*Is late to the topic. I is sorry*
This seems like a pretty interesting project, and if you still want to go into the 3D realm with this, I do know how to 3D model/texture with Maya, so I know just how long it takes to make something in 3D, especially if it's just one person doing it. It also depends on the complexity of the character/object, of course, so the simpler the characters/objects, the faster it would take to make (but that should be kinda obvious). Just something to point out for whoever would be making any concept art for it, since time would be extremely important for something like this.
Not too sure though if I'd be available to help out with something like this though, since I'm extremely busy with school and stuff (plus I really don't want to commit to anything and then turn around and surprise you with a "can't do it, too bad"). BUT if you really do have trouble finding someone to do any modeling, I can certainly try my best to help out. _________________ My art blog: http://annamariacoppi.blogspot.com/

True enough, but the artistic direction also needs to be set fairly early on, if not at the outset. The later you start to work out the art and integrate the story, the more likely it is to feel like a tacked-on afterthought. Hence, I tossed out some ideas instead of churning out a whole novel.
Quote: | I'd personally not want to see a "don't trust anyone" one man show, as a world like that sounds pretty barren. |
I was thinking more along the lines of a small group taking on a faceless corporation in a world that's largely neutral, populated by people that just want to get on with their lives. It'd only be in the latter stages of the storyline that things would go to hell for the protagonists. You know that idiom, "It's always darkest before dawn."
I figured some cyberpunk could naturally precede the EXE series' lighter cyberprep attitude, and a lightening of the story as the Hikari family takes center stage is rather fitting. (Loved that parody box art, by the way. Thanks for the laugh.)
Saito-kun wrote: | Side question: Where'd you get Geni? |
I was playing the Feros mission in Mass Effect 1 one night and figured ExoGeni had a nice ring to it and would lend itself well to having sister companies. Then "BioGeni" popped into my head, came up with a logo - something of a cross between an enso and a crystallogram of DNA - and then kinda pigeonholed the idea, mostly because it's not original.
This thread reminded me of that idea and I imagined something in between a 1960s American conglomerate and a 1980s Japanese corporation would be fitting.
Quote: | Though I get the feeling that with our current potential pooled skills and interest, story is a bit beyond the current set of goals. |
That's overwhelmingly likely, yeah. I figured I'd post it anyway and see what would happen.

I do appreciate the praise, but I'm inclined to agree with Equilibrium on the quality and Saito-kun on the scope. It's not that good, and it's way too big.
Quote: | Geni Group = Google [idk if they're really evil though, but they sure have a good amount of power for a search engine company] for one. |
I was thinking more along the lines of a cross between Monsanto, Halliburton, and the Microsoft everyone loved to hate back in the 90s. They're bastards and they have done reprehensible things, but we use their goods anyway.
Quote: | The Blender Group, for example, has their Open Movie Project, which has released a couple of really really great [and good quality] 3D films. |
The thing with the Blender is that it has a large and enthusiastic community, two things that are frankly lacking here. Beyond that, projects like Big Buck Bunny were headed by people that do that sort of work for a living. If I recall, BBB in particular took 10 professionals half a year of full-time work just to churn out a 10-minute video. _________________ *placeholder* |

after one month the only thing definite is that whatever it is it's going to be in 3d.
This could take a few years. _________________ hi mom. |

I wasn't even aware we were actually going to try anything since only a few deemed it possible. :O |

It hasn't even been decided what sort of 3D it'll be. Axonometric or perspective? Open or constrained? First person or third person? How much of a role will physics play?
None of that has been answered.
"Could," only if it means you're acknowledging it's not even off the ground yet. "Will" is more apt if we're running with the assumption that any work will be done here. If this goes anywhere at all, it'll probably follow a development cycle similar to a Herman Miller chair. That is, spending years thinking about what specifically should even be thought about before any serious design work is committed.
Not to say that it's a bad thing. _________________ *placeholder* |

Wait wait, when did we decide it was 3D?
I think it would be cool to start something. It was my intention to start something. My last post said "only a few deemed it possible", which implies posts after my initial post.
Saying I wasn't aware we were going to do anything doesn't mean I don't want to. |

Maybe you should work like all the Sonic fangames do. Although Megaman games aren't as maligned as Sonic. |

Ack! I almost had a heart attack.
And then I did, of sadness, when I read your last line.
Seriously, it's awesome. You should make a game. You should. |
