Having finished Netto, I'm off to go be unproductive for the next three months. Alternatively, I could keep working and burn out, but that sounds like a bad idea.
Hikari Netto
And this is how the three were supposed to be arranged.

Woah! That looks amazing! Great job on all three ^_^ I showed the Laika one to a friend of mine who's crazy about him and she would want it if she could, haha XD
I might try my hand at sculpting again. Got a haul of clay lately, so why not? ^^ _________________

I was thinking of having a go at Forte or Gospel, actually. Gospel would definitely be a change, since I'm getting pretty tired of making people for the moment. D:
Mona Risa: What sort of clay are you using? Polymer, air-dry, stoneclay...? And are you sculpting them over a wood mannequin base?
Neo: They're definitely real...um. Did you mean official? The moment you find any official models of the EXE human operators, you let me know. |

For the first two figurines I made, I used a wooden mannequin but unfortunately chose modeling paste, which is a really lousy medium to do this sort of thing with. For the third (the Dingo one) I used regular clay that dries in the air as I thought it would be risky to use Fimo and stick the mannequin in the oven.
Right now, I have a bucketload of Fimo clay and a package of regular dries-in-roomtemperature clay and some wooden mannequins. _________________

What kind of clay are you using by the way? It doesn't look like the standard one that tastes like sand. _________________

no, Cloud. Duo's a bitch.
Malik - I'm still using Super Sculpey. I've never tasted it, but it's apparently plasticized, so I'm going to assume it doesn't taste like sand. Are you talking about stoneclays? (and what do you use, actually?)
Mona - interesting choice on the mannequins. I would have thought they were too...inflexible for detail work, but if they work /o/
I still prefer polymer clays, though, since there's more flexibility in general to mess things up and redo them. The clay's tendency to squish whenever put into layers is annoying, though; I need to learn how to build better aluminum foil bases. |

I worked with more traditional clay for earthenware. That's... probably why it wasn't that great for tiny details XD _________________

Something a little different; R-Searchman action figure, since I had the ball joints lying around, and regular sculpture was getting a little boring. Mattel R-Rockman there for size comparison.

Holy-
That ball joined Searchman is going to be killer. Can I ask where you got the ball joints at, and what exactly they're made from? That sounds like a really cool project I'd like to try. _________________ My art blog: http://annamariacoppi.blogspot.com/

Basically these: Hobby Base Ball Shape Joints
If you use HLJ's search function and look for "Hobby Base", you'll find different types of joints by the same manufacturer. They're the most easily available to me at the moment, and I think they work well - check the sizes before you start a project, though. And allow for a few weeks for the joints to actually arrive; HLJ is not fast unless you're willing to pay loads for shipping.
(Also, it's R-Searchman/Laika, but that's just being nitpicky) |

Oh wow, those look like they'd work out great! But it does look like they're made out of plastic though, right? I only know how to use Super Sculpey, so I'd have to put that into the oven to cook... and Plastic+oven heat=hot melted plastic. ): They do look interesting though, so I will definitely have to look into them some more, so thanks. _________________ My art blog: http://annamariacoppi.blogspot.com/

Yes, the joints are plastic, but using oven-bake polymer clay isn't a problem so long as you actually make each individual body part separately and attach them together after baking. This is what I've done here, with Fimo - which I recommend for action figures; it's a lot sturdier and smoother than Super Sculpey after baking, albeit a little less pliable in the working process.
All you have to do is make sure there's peg holes to put the joints in the right places. Of course, this also means you have to be really damn careful about proportions and positioning, but you should be fine with that. |

Adding details slowly. Now that the body proportions are mostly correct, have started working on his head; will do that, then hands, then smaller details such as kneecaps, feet, and the like.
(am also waiting for translucent orange Fimo clay to come in, to be used for the helmet visor. Fancy, I know.) |
