Has anyone heard about this?

Quote:
The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It's a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video.

Instantly, I thought of my little plug-in PET toy (btw, I got messages from Mayl and Chaud, and I figured out how to battle viruses. I really only use to see what time it is, lol).

The OS for the Pi has to be loaded from an SD card and can run Debian, and any other ARM distro (*not* Windows 8 though, slightly different ARM architecture).

You can find more information here. Did I mention that it is only 30 bucks? I should also mention the worldwide wait time is quite ridiculous as well (people who pre-ordered one in February are *just* now getting theirs).

I have found 3.5" LCD TFT touchscreens on eBay and related sites for relatively cheap (less than 10 bucks). Once I am able to actually *purchase* a Pi (the best you can do at the moment is register your interest on distributor sites), I want to get a 3.5" VGA (640x480) screen to test ideas/GUI designs on.

In regards to merely customizing a Linux flavor to look/act/feel like a PET OS (I am not opposed to this), I would rather have something built from the ground-up, but I am no software engineer. However, Mozilla (the people behind the Firefox browser) has created a proof-of-concept open-source OS called, "Boot to Gecko".

Boot to Gecko's apps are written in HTML5 and CSS3, languages I *do* understand. Seeing as how their first phone works on an ARM-based chipset (Qualcomm), I think the same would work for my little (ambitious) project (the R Pi's chipset os from Broadcom).

I don't have any sort of project page up yet, as I have a bad habit of jumping from project to project (which most of you are witness to by now, lol), I have created a new Twitter account to kind of document my progress/findings/revelations.

Thoughts? Ideas?

P.S. I should also note that I came across an interesting post in the R Pi forums, where the idea is to have some sort of MMORPG game, just for R Pis...and, each Pi would host an unspecified amount of the online world based on where they are geographically.

In my adaptation of this idea, maybe it would be cool to have your own hosted homepage (like the ones Netto and the gang have) to start with. The whole "3D representation of the 'Net" thing can come later. Anyhoo, these are all things that have occupied my brain space for the past week or so.

EDIT: I forgot to add a link to the AppJS framework, which allows you to build native desktop apps for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

That's interesting. So it's like a tinier version of something like the Macbook air?

Hah, more like super tiny in comparison to the Air. I'm still reading through the MMORPG idea thread on the R Pi forums to extract ideas from (and to figure out dependencies and such).

I've changed my mind regarding the first part in the P.S. section of my last post. The 'Net would be hosted on a central server somewhere, but everyone's personal homepage would be stored on their PETs.

Ooh, what were the results of that conversation? I'm always interested in what people plan/wish to do with this nifty lil' gadget.

sorry, maybe i didn't make myself clear :D
i have a 3 minutes high-tech news space, so there's no conversation, and moreover i have to keep myself neutral :D

anyway, whan i'll get my hands on one of those ARMiracles, I'll turn it in a media center Wink

Aw, that sucks.

I hope to get a couple of these for other experiments and such. I also want to create a media center of some sort.

EDIT: I got my RasPi! I also have 2 PETs! I'm taking apart one PET and seeing what I can do about customizing a Linux distro to look like the anime's OS, but it seems easier to do that with Mozilla's Boot To Gecko sourcecode. Ahhh, so many possibilities!

EDIT 02: The three Linux distros on the RasPi site are too bulky and slow for what I need so I am going to see what I can do about porting Damn Small Linux or something similar to it. I've ordered a 3.5" display at 640x480 resolution as well. I hope to share the fruits of my labor soon.
