Eh, I read somewhere that anime and manga artists intentionally draw their characters to look as un-asian as possible. One reason given was that, seeing as so many asians look so much alike (small eyes, dark hair, etc), they wanted to make characters that would look different, i.e. large eyes and colorful hair. It's been awhile since I read it, though, so I may be wrong.

Mangas always have a non realistic style, that is what make them different, for a realistic style we have the American comic. About the eyes, I think that there are lots of characters in mangas that looks Asian, take a look in Naruto for example.

The eyes express emotion so they have to exxaggerate them a bit to let people notice the emotions. As for hair color and the more cocassion looking anime characters, I heard from someone else (not saying who) that asians just like the way europeans look ^^;; or they like different, not same. ^^;; notice the hair? many characters have brown or black hair, but some have red hair or blue or blonde.

Maybe they were trying to stop the whole "dots for eyes" thing.

Not always. They tend to vary the eye shape and size of the eyes from one person to another, mainly eyes can represent part of the personality of the character. Not just for detail since many eyes in the anime/manga aren't really 'detailed' for the most part but serve another purpose.

The eyes are part of an element to determine the character's personality and age or trick us into believe what a character is like based on the eyes. For example you'll see things like... Enzan having much bigger eyes as a little child when he received Blues then his pre-teen/teenager eyes. Denoting the difference of ages and also his personality changes. Or your pretty hero with narrow eyes and angular face and you can almost determine his personality from his face shape and eye shape.

As for features hair color and eye color are hardly an asian feature, Europeans can be black haired just as much as Asiatics, Latin-American are mostly black/brown haired or red haired. Usually the hair color is also used to denote personality and/or stereotypes. You can see many brown haired heroes while many heroines tend to have light brown/blonde hair color, all depending on the personality traits.

You'll notice they use and abuse the 'blonde blue eyed heroine that can't be any more dumb' stereotype. They do tend to use a lot of stereotypes and to create many more. They not necesarily want to create an estilizated reality, but to have no bounds to what they can do, so if they want to give variety to the world they can easily create characters with unusual hair styles and hair colors and eye colors.

I don't think it was something that started in Japan though. I'm sure there were european and american comics already giving strange hair colors and hair shapes to their human characters. A manga doesn't necesarily aims to be realistic. In many cases they want to break off the reality.

Planty draws big eyes. @_@

My guess was actually that they just do it so they can fit more expressions into characters. Realistic eyes are boring. :stonecube:

Manga that takes place in Japan usually have the eyes, unless it is comical... I don't really see why it matters >.>;. It's their style of drawing =P. I personally like when they have good sized eyes. They look sort of akward when their eyes are too small.

In my opinion, Enzan's eyes look kind of Japanese. That's just me, though.

I think it's a good that that anime characters don't look asian. That way everyone has a unique style to match their personality. It also allows us to distinguish them, whether it be personality-wise or appearance-wise.
