That is true. In general, for the people who never touch a DarkChip, you can find the DS copies in BlackEarth. I think this includes just the navis in that version of the game, but I am not sure, as I haven't picked that game up in a LONG time.

| The DS chips for all the navis except soul navis are found just lying around Black Earth, then you get the ones for the Soul navis of your version when battling the mirrors. That just leaves the soul navis of the other version, and you might as well trade for those since you have to trade for the SP and regular chips too. |

Not necessarily. I think I only traded navi data, and I was able to acquire the SP and regular navi chips for the navis exclusive to the other version. Nevertheless, I am still looking for the DS chips of the other exclusive navis, and I can't seem to find them anywhere. i guess it is up to trade. Sigh.

Dark chips are chips that greatly increases a navi's power, but in exchange it loses it soul and goes crazy/evil. In the game, if you use a dark chip, after the two times when your only choice is to, you will permanetely get 1 hp taken off your total hp for the rest of the game. So be wise.

Plus you lose control of your navi and cannot soul unison

Simply put, Darkness allows you to reduce your health to near-nil and gain what seem to be 'extraordinary' powers, while being Light makes your soul pure, allowing for Full Synchro and Soul Unisons.
EDIT: Misspelled extraordinary.
