Episode 5: Berserk
~ 13 October 200X ~ Morning inside the Warehouse ~ Dentech Port ~
The sun shone brightly through the windows of the building, on Bass’s face as he started to regain feeling in his body. “Mmnnn… Oww, oww, oww, rrk!” he complained as he felt pain all over his body and struggled against his bonds where he was tied in his chair. Alright, who wants their ass kicked? he wondered as he looked around the room frantically, in search of a target. He noticed three figures surrounding a fourth one. Lyne! he thought as he struggled against his bonds again as he recognized her as the fourth figure.
“How’d you get free?” the tallest figure, that looked like a navi, asked Lyne.
“I don’t know,” she replied truthfully in a quiet, fearful, tone.
“You lie!” the tall navi exclaimed as he brought his hand down and smacked her.
NO! LYNE! Bass thought frantically as he strained against his bonds. That guy will pay. He started to feel something familiar and unwanted. NO! I’m human. Stop please, he pleaded to himself as he watched the tall navi grab Lyne’s arm and drag her towards the door. She struggled in her captor’s grip the whole way.
“Khan, can’t you be more gentle?” Toxyn asked, “Alpha will be mad if he found out you ruffed her up.”
“Yeah, Khan,” Seer agreed with her navi.
“Alpha would’ve done the same. Don’t question my actions, and you stop struggling before I smack you again,” Khan said, jerking his captive by the arm and glaring down at her. Lyne tensed at his glare and stopped struggling in the tall navi’s grip, intimidated by his menace. “Much better. Now for your appointment with destiny,” he said as he dragged her out the door with Seer and Toxyn following in his wake, closing the door and locking it behind them.
After they left Bass felt a few more surges of anger rush over him. Lyne, help me! he mentally cried as he felt himself want to change from his current state. No you won’t win over me. No, no, no… he thought as he pushed back the urge.
“*POP*BANG*” a gunshot went off making Bass lose his focus. The shot took out the security camera.
“Who?!” Bass rumbled in a confused, low tone as he searched for the source of the sound. His thoughts drifted back to Lyne in danger. Must protect. Must destroy all who oppose me, “Guahhh!!!” he shouted as he armor activated around him.

~ Outside window ~
“Did you get the camera?” Lan asked DJ, who was leaning into the window.
“Yeah I got it, but I think Bass wasn’t too happy about it,” the gunslinger NetOp replied.
“Lemme’ see,” Lan said as he climbed up to where DJ was at and peeked in the window. “Yeah, he doesn’t look to happy about that, and his armor is active. Wonder why?”
“Don’t know. It happened shortly after I took out the camera.”
“We better get ready Lan,” Jackie said as Lan looked at a chip he held in his hand. The chip’s little picture had what looked like a transparent purple feather.
He then looked back at the struggling figure in the chair below them. I sure hope you’re right about this Nights, he thought as he slotted it in his PET, along with a few others, while Jackie was readying her chips as well.

~ Lan’s Flashback ~ At the Van ~
“Lan, wait a moment,” Nights’s voice called from the monitor in the van. The NetSavior turned back and went to see what the Harlequin navi wanted. “I have something for you,” Nights continued as Lan approached. A battle chip popped out of the console.
“What is it?” Lan asked as he picked up the chip.
“That’s an Angel Feather Chip. Use it if Bass goes berserk. It should protect from him attacking you or your fellow team mates.” Nights e-mail warning suddenly beeped. “Darn it. What’s he want now? Well anyway, use that chip wisely Lan. I have to return to my employer and find out what he wants. I will return,” Nights said as he disappeared from the monitor that he was on.
___________________________
“LAN! Are you ready?” Jackie shouted at him, returning his attention to here and now.
“Yeah. I’m ready,” he replied as he breathed out while slotting in his synchro chip. Jackie did the same as Lan. After they were done, DJ grabbed them both around the waist.
“OK guys, remember what I told you?” DJ asked them. Lan and Jackie both shook their heads ‘no’ in reply. “I’m going to count to down three. On three, shout Cross Fusion while I do a teleport through the DA. Got it?” They both nodded as he started his count down. “3…2…1…”
“Cross Fusion,” Jackie and Lan said in unison with their navis while DJ used his quick teleport ability to enter the DA.
“Uh Oh!” DJ said in shock as he looked at the ground, “To high!” The trio started to plummet to the ground. Lan and Jackie broke away from DJ and landed safely in their cross-fused state. DJ himself was able to correct himself and land safely once the other two were away. After they successfully landed, they approached the struggling figure whose attempts to escape became more desperate, and whose grunts of exertion had developed an unusual tone.
What’s wrong with him? Lan pondered mentally as the trio settled to stand in front of Bass, who had his head hung. He then lifted it and hissed at them. Jackie gasped in horror and hid behind DJ. The half navi’s eyes were glowing blood red in color, and it was very apparent he also had fangs. Curious, Lan reached his hand out to place it on Bass’s shoulder and get his attention, but as he reached out, Bass tried to bite him.
“Yikes,” Lan exclaimed as he quickly withdrew his hand, “Mega is this what the berserk condition program does to navis? It’s like he doesn’t know who I am.”
“Yep. He can’t distinguish between friend or foe in this state,” Mega replied.
“I’m going to try again,” Lan said as he reached out once more.
“Be careful Lan,” Mega cautioned his NetOp as Lan successfully placed his hand on top of Bass’s helmet gem. Doing so brought Bass’s focus directly on him.
“Let go,” Bass rumbled in warning, “Let go Megaman. I don’t want to delete you. Rurrraghhhh!!!” he cried out as the marks on the sides of his face blew off their foundation cover. Lan backed off nervously. Bass hung his head again with his teeth gritted and started to breathe heavily with an edge on each breath.
“He hasn’t gone fully berserk,” Mega commented, “but he thought you were me.”
“He’s already gone,” Flash said, “If he can’t tell the difference between you and Lan, that’s a major sign. The same thing happened to Beastman after too many dark chips. He couldn’t tell me from Shademan. That was rather hilarious actually. But I haven’t seen this kind of berserk condition before. It’s rather frightening with those glowing eyes and the fangs…”
“Hush!” Jackie warned Flash. She then turned to face DJ and Lan. “I have to agree with Flash. This is rather scary. Can’t we just look for Lyne?” she pleaded.
“There were guards posted on the other side of the door last night,” Sonata reminded them, “We can’t risk looking for her yet if they’re still there.”
“He’s right. We need to stick to Nights’s plan,” DJ agreed with his navi, “This is our only hope of finding Lyne.”
“Well then, let’s get ready,” Lan commanded rather nervously as DJ took his position to Bass’s right side and Jackie stood behind the chair. They both activated Small Sword chip programs and got ready for Lan’s signal.
“Wha’ do you think you’re doing?” Bass demanded as he looked at the three navis, “I said leave me alone. I’ll delete you all if you set me free,” he rumbled in an unfamiliar tone of voice. Lan glanced over at DJ and Jackie while nodding at them. Some part of Bass might have understood what was going on and something like a whimper could be heard under his growl. Shortly after that the sound of rope sawing ensued. When the sound registered in Bass’s ears, he started to become antsy and strained against his bonds again. Before DJ and Jackie even got halfway through Bass’s bonds, he broke free splintering the chair in his force. “DELETE!” the now crazed Bass called out as, causing all three of them to scatter and hide.
“Maybe we should’ve listened to what he said,” Mega commented as Lan peeked from behind a pile of boxes at Bass, who was now searching for his three rescuers.
“Guah! E llamsss oiy. Atalad!” Bass shouted in an unknown language as he looked around a box before he broke it in half and started to search its contents wildly.
“Eii!” Mega said as he observed what Bass was doing.
“What did he say? I can’t understand it,” Lan asked Mega.
“You don’t want to know, but I suggest we move.”
“Right,” Lan agreed as he climbed up the backside of the pile of boxes. “Hey, how’d you understand what he said?”
“Don’t worry about it. It’s NaviScript.”
“Oh,” Lan commented as he continued to ascend.
“Arahw aru oiy? Ukub!” he exclaimed as he moved on to another box and broke it as well.
“Ayeiiii!” Jackie screamed loudly from the other side of the box. Her scream caused Bass to stop and stare at her for a second before he came in close to inspect her. “Go away!” Jackie exclaimed as she held her arms out in front of her, trying to prevent Bass from getting any closer.
“Get away from her,” DJ shouted at Bass, getting the berserk navi’s attention. The gunslinger readied to draw his weapon on Bass, who hissed and then charged at DJ. “Uh Oh!” DJ muttered nervously as he spun around and tried to run from the very fast-moving Bass.
“We’d better stop Bass before DJ and Jackie get hurt,” Mega suggested as Bass cornered them and DJ quickly raised his gun to try and ward the half-navi off.
“Shoot,” Jackie squeaked in a frightened tone.
“I can’t. He’s my friend,” he said, his shaking hands unable to point the weapon directly at Bass, who closed in and swatted the gun wielding hand away.
“Ukub. Oiy ukub evun,” Bass said as he lifted DJ up by the scruff of his shirt collar.
“I know that language. E in evun. M’e numoh.”
“What did you tell him? And what language is that?” Jackie asked.
“He thinks I’m a navi. I told him I’m human,” DJ replied as Bass inspected him. “The language is a really rough navi script that is used on the Undernet. It’s called DemonScript, Owww,” DJ exclaimed as Bass roughly threw him to the floor, “Japanese Dialect. Owww! Stop that.”
“Ukub! Evun ukub!” Bass said as he started to kick him.
“Stop it Connor!” Jackie said as she jumped on his back and started hitting his helmet. He flung her off his back easily, then returned his attention to DJ, who was laboring to get away.
“Atalad,” Bass hissed as he slowly approached him.
“Stop Bass,” Lan said as he used an area steal to appear in front of him.
“Megaman. Ukub. Oiy llew ab datalad,” Bass growled when access to his prey was blocked.
“Interesting, he still thinks you’re still me,” Mega commented.
“What did he say?” Lan asked.
“*Cough* He said he’s going to delete you,” DJ piped up as he got into a sitting position.
“That’s nice to know. He always threatened to do that. Bring it on Bass,” Lan said as he motioned him to come at him while he got into a fighting pose. Bass crouched down low, getting ready to spring at Lan, then quickly burst into motion.
“He really means it too, doesn’t he?” Lan asked as Bass approached.
“Lan use that chip Nights gave you,” Mega cried out, trying to stay calm.
“OK. Here it goes. Angel Feather!” Lan called out as he closed his eyes and braced for Bass’s impact. After a few moments, Lan realized that he felt nothing. “Wha?” Lan opened his eyes and saw a single object floating in the palm of his hand. He looked past it and saw that Bass’s still-glowing eyes were locked onto it, and his previously fierce visage had slackened into a dazed look.
“Where’d you get that?” DJ asked as he got up off the ground to go check up on Jackie.
“Night’s gave it to me. I wanna’ try something. Where is Lyne?” Lan asked Bass.
“Lyne,” he replied quietly, “Yhat kiit Lyne. S’ahs ne ragnud. Ukub,” he replied still having that dazed look on his face.
“What did he say?” Lan asked as he moved the light purple feather around with Bass’s gaze following its path. “What did this do to him? He’s not crazed angry, but docile.”
“Lyne,” Bass said quietly and solemnly, not taking his eyes off of the object in Lan’s hand.
“He said ‘They took her.’ and ‘She’s in danger. Baka',’” DJ replied as he helped Jackie up off the ground.
“Hey. I’m not a baka,” Lan protested.
“Try telling Bass that. He said it,” DJ told him.
“That looks like a bird feather, sort of,” Jackie observed, “Maybe it’s from Lyne’s style change, but how would Nights get a hold of one of them?” She held her chin as she thought about it.
“Hum…? Don’t know, but we have no time for that. Bass, who does this belong to?” Lan asked him.
“AEIIII!” came a noise from the other side of the door.
“Lyne’s. Ragnud! Zodiac!” he replied quickly and tried to charge past them, but couldn’t. The feather still had him locked in place. “LYNE!” Bass cried out as his muscles noticeably bristled and tensed against the power the feather held over him.
“What do we do, Lan?” Jackie asked, backing away slightly. DJ looked on in quiet concern.
“Maybe we should let him lose on Zodiac,” Lan said, not entirely sure about it, “He should provide enough of a distraction. That way, we can get Lyne out of here. Besides, they asked for him.”
“Heh, heh. Zodiac. Atalad,” Bass quietly mumbled, almost purring in agreement with Lan as he calmed down. That was before another scream came through the door, causing DJ and Jackie to nod their agreement and Bass to tense up again. Lan deactivated the Angel Feather Program. Bass quickly bolted past them at amazing speed. “ATALAD!” he cried as he teleported through the door.
“Let’s follow him,” Lan suggested as they ran up to the door. He then tried to open it. “Great! It’s locked. DJ, you should be able to follow him.”
“Why me? I can only quick teleport. Not do teleporting like Lyne and he can. Why not AreaSteal through the door?”
“Can’t. Only applies to the area we’re in,” Lan said.
“You know he’s right,” Sonata interjected, “We can do it. We’re just going to keep an eye on him anyway. Right Lan?”
“Exactly. We don’t want to get in the way. And if you can, try to locate my sister and get her away from Zodiac. Aguhhh,” Lan grasped his arm.
“What’s wrong Lan?” Jackie asked as she investigated where Lan held his arm. “He’s bleeding.”
“Serves him right,” Flash huffed, “He was standing in the way when Bass rushed past us. His cloak became as sharp as a razor at the speed he was traveling.”
“Flashman!” Jackie shouted at her navi partner.
“Jackie, take care of Lan. I’ll go keep an eye on Bass and try to rescue Lyne,” DJ said as he too teleported through the door.
“Okay,” she said quietly as she started to wrap some shredded cloth around Lan’s wound.

~ Earlier ~ Hallway outside Lyne and Bass’s holding room ~
“I’m going to check up on Maniac and see what he’s up too,” Khan said as he shoved Lyne towards Toxyn and picked up his pace, leaving the trio of females behind.
“C’mon. Move it,” Toxyn said as she shut the door and locked it while shoving Lyne forward.
“And you were saying Khan was being rough on her. Look at you,” Seer scolded her navi. “You wouldn’t want Alpha to punish you for the same thing.”
“No Seer,” Toxyn hung her head while now gently steering Lyne down the hallway.
“Good, then let’s get her ready,” she said as she opened the door to a room. Lyne tensed up when she recognized what was in the room: a Mind Jumper chair.
NO! Lyne thought as she shook her head and started to back off from the door until she bumped into Toxyn.
“What’s wrong little girl?” Toxyn asked as she started to push her towards the room’s entryway. Surprisingly, Lyne didn’t budge, even though Toxyn was pushing with all her might. “C’mon, get in there,” Toxyn said as she lifted her up from ground as started to rush the door. Lyne stopped her charge by bracing her arms and legs against the doorframe. ”Hey!”
“No, no, no, NO!” Lyne shouted as she shook her head and held strong.
“I wonder… Are you still ticklish in this spot?” Toxyn asked as she poked into Lyne’s side and started to move her finger around.
“NO!” Lyne cried out as her arms tucked in to protect the sensitive spot, leaving her vulnerable to be shoved through the door. She looked back at Toxyn. “Not nice,” Lyne said as she scowled at the Zodiac navi. Toxyn then shoved her into the room hard enough that she ended up in the chair, which automatically strapped her in. “AEIII!” Lyne screamed as she struggled against the straps.
“Don’t worry. This isn’t going to hurt a bit,” Seer purred as she flipped a switch that lowered a VR helmet and typed in some codes on the console. “Can you take care of this while I take a coffee break?”
“Yeah. Go ahead Seer.” Seer walked out the door. “She’s right,” Toxyn said as she adjusted the helmet to fit Lyne’s head, “This won’t hurt a bit.”
“Stop! I don’t wanna’ jump,” Lyne cried out as she started to struggle against her bonds again. “Let me GO!”
Toxyn paid her plea no mind as she flipped a switch on the chair. Lyne screamed as she felt herself drawn onto the Net, disappearing completely from sight. “Huh? Where’d she go?” Toxyn questioned as she looked around the chair, hoping to find any sign of the young, teenage girl’s body.
“Where is she?” Seer boomed as she reentered the room with a cup of coffee in her hand.
Toxyn shrugged her shoulders, “She didn’t even jump into the navi frame we had set up for her. See,” Toxyn said as she brought up a display of a Zodiac Network (ZN) Capture Cell with Lyne in her navi armor, holding the sides of her head, while the generic navi frame they had set up remained immobile.
“This shouldn’t have happened,” Seer said as she flipped the same switch Toxyn did. This caused Lyne to return to the chair, still strapped down with a look of exhausted shock on her face.
“You’re making our job difficult,” Toxyn said as she tightened the straps on the chair, making Lyne grit her teeth so she wouldn’t cry out. “Now be good and stay put,” Toxyn said as she walked up to Seer, who was typing like mad on the console. “Was there anything wrong with the program instructions Alpha gave you?”
“I reset everything and started from scratch. So far I see no abnormalities on the programming. I’ll run a sim on it,” she replied as she had the console test her program out. “Nothing’s wrong with the program. Try again,”
“ ‘Kay,” Toxyn said as she walked up to the chair that Lyne was strapped into and flipped the switch again, ending up with the same result. Lyne screamed and disappeared.
“Woo… Dizzy,” Lyne’s voice came from the monitor display above her chair, getting the female navi and operator’s attention. They stared at the display in disbelief for a sec and then at each other, puzzled about what had just happened. They both then started to fume with anger. Seer pounded her fists down onto the console as Toxyn made a small dent in the wall with her foot.
Khan then entered the room casually. “What’s wrong my beauties? Is that the frame we m… Where is she?” he asked them both as Toxyn walked back over to Lyne’s chair and flipped the same switch as before causing Lyne to return.
“There she is, and this” she replied as she flipped it once more making Lyne disappear from their sight and appear on the monitor above the chair again, “is what’s wrong.” What Khan had thought was the frame they were going to hold Lyne in appeared back in the Capture Cell, now laying on the floor with dizzy circles in her eyes.
“Hum… Odd. This does present a problem,” he said as placed his hand on his chin and stoked his short, pointy, blonde beard. Just then his e-mail warning went off. “Who could that be right now?” He grumped as he opened his new e-mail and read it quickly.
“Great! Rosaline is in my office. I’m jumping out. Khan please take care of this,” a separated voice said as it faded.
“Yes Mystic,” Khan said as he turned his attention back to the navi that was struggling to regain her balance. Now why won’t you cooperate? Khan pondered as he started to scan over the young, female half-navi’s programming.
“Avual rah anilu!” an angered voice muttered in a low quiet tone. Toxyn took notice of two glowing objects in the hall way.
“Uh… Khan,” she said a nervous tone while tapping his shoulder.
“Stop bothering me Toxyn. I’m trying to figure out what you and Seer did wrong.” he said as he started to type in some codes on the console.
“AVUAL RAH ANILU!” the voice shouted louder this time, springing at the two navi’s out of the shadows. “OIY TROH RAH!”
Khan turned to face the charging, angry figure. His eyes went wide with shock as he avoided Bass’s first strike at him with his Dark Blade attack. “Bass! What’s he doing here?” he questioned as he jumped back away from another blow aimed at him while Toxyn and Seer stood there frozen in shock.
“ATALAD!” Bass cried out as he sped in too quickly for Khan to react and stabbed his Dark Blade into the taller navi’s icon, causing Khan to log out of the DA. “Euwiy!” he muttered as Lyne finally regained her composure. She saw him on the other side of the monitor.
“Connor,” she quietly spoke to herself in relief until she saw his eyes. No. He’s gone berserk, “I’m fine calm down,” she shouted at him from the monitor, getting his attention.
“Lyne,” he quietly mumbled as he stared at her.
“He’s off his guard Toxyn. Attack him!” Seer commanded.
“But I’m not nearly strong enough to fight him.”
Seer shoved Toxyn, “Don’t worry about that. I’m going to jump link with you. Now attack him for logging out Khan.”
“Right. Guhaa!” she cried out as she charged at him, blindsiding him. “How dare you attack Khan in that manner you little nuisance.”
Bass shook free from her tackling grip. “Grrrrrr,” he snarled as his focus turned to her.

~ Mystic’s Office ~
“And that is what I’m doing today,” Mystic said to his guest, Rosaline.
“That sound’s wonderful!” Rosaline cheerfully replied as she smiled back at the older man.
“*Cough, cough,* Heyaaah, Mystic!” Khan called out as he returned to his PET, getting his NetOp’s attention.
“Oh my! What happened?” Mystic asked in concern as he noticed Khan’s icon was bisected diagonally. “Lyne did this to you, didn’t she?”
“No. Bass *Cough*, ahhh,” Khan replied as he went into emergency sleep mode, making his repair function activate. After he did so, Mystic heard several loud banging noises outside his office. He rose up from his chair to investigate the noise and his guest also rose from her seat to follow him.
“ ‘Scuse me!” Seer said to Mystic as she opened the door and rushed through to the Jump Chairs in the back of the office.
“Let go you little beast!” came a shout from the floor below as Mystic went through the door and looked down. What he saw was Bass’s mouth clamped tightly onto Toxyn’s forearm while trying to hack at her with his Dark Blade and shoot at her with his Dark Buster. She lithely twisted away from a good majority of his random shots and slashes until she managed to yank her arm from Bass’s jaws. Where he had bitten her started to pixelate. “You’ll pay for that,” Toxyn shouted at him as she got up and charged at him. She tackled him and they started to form a cloud of dust. Maniac, yawning as he entered the room, looked at the cloud curiously.
“Ooo. Yay! A dust bunny! I wanna’ play too,” he said as he jumped inside the cloud of dust, unknowingly joining in the fight. “Hey, it’s a party!”
“Hmm… I guess the NetAgency came through on their promise,” Rosaline commented. “He’s fighting so beautifully, and he’s ruthless. It’s so lovely.”
“Of course my child,” a voice projected from the shadows, “It is amazing. He might be of some use to us after all, especially in that state. Try to have him captured. Preferably unharmed.”
Mystic nodded, understanding completely what Alpha wanted. “Toxyn, Maniac, capture him. Khan is too injured to assist,” he called as the dust cloud dissipated with Maniac holding onto Bass around his chest and pinning the struggling half-navi’s legs with his own. Bass struggled in his grip, snarling at him.
“Look Toxyn. A Kitty! Owie it bit me! Rabies, rabies! Wait, did I have rabies already? This is so cool Toxyn, you have to try this. Angry Kitty, whee, he, he, he,” he said grinning, looking at where Bass was clinched onto his arm as Toxyn palmed her face.
“Good job Maniac,” Mystic congratulated the excited navi.
“Yay! I did a good job!” Maniac said as he threw his hands up into the air. “Oops!” he exclaimed as Bass took advantage of the navi’s mistake, knocking Maniac off and bolting for freedom.
“Idiot now we have to catch him again,” Toxyn said as she charged after Bass, feeling much stronger now that Seer had linked up. “Lashes!” she called out, and five long, whip-like tendrils morphed from her left arm. She swung at Bass, who had his back turned, to try and entangle him, but her battle cry caught his attention and he dropped to the ground, sweeping his leg out to knock her over. Bass pounced quickly when she landed and stabbed her multiple times in her back with a crazed look in his eyes and a toothy grin on his face until the Zodiac navi was forced to log out.
/Jump Connection signal lost/ a voice projected from Seer’s VR Helmet. She flung it off shortly afterwards.
“Drat!” she cried out as she pounded her fist against the armrest of the chair and pulled her PET off of her hip to check it. Toxyn was breathing really heavily with multiple pixilating wounds. “Rest now,” she commanded her navi as she looked over to the chair next to her with Prophet in it. “I hope you can get him Prophet,” she said silently as she turned her attention to the remaining navis.
_______________________
“Ahh, Toxyn!” Maniac shouted with wild shock in his eyes, “No, no, where’d you go?” He lunged forward suddenly with his arms stretched out to where she’d just been. Bass swung out wildly at the sudden movement, knocking Maniac back.
“Ll’e atalad oiy iit!” he shrieked at the remaining Zodiac navi, readying his Dark Buster to fire at Maniac.
“Rrrg, you hurt her. She’s gone, you hurt her, you bastaaagh-” Maniac yelled, and was cut off when Bass fired at him, the force of the shot driving Maniac into the wall.
“Yhaaaaaa! Atalad oiy! Atalad te lluuu!” Bass continued to scream, firing at ceiling, walls, the floor, and then at a large piece of rubble that flew at him through the hole Maniac had left in the wall.
“Rrrrraaaah!” screamed the navi that tore through the hole, following the thrown rubble. This navi had the odd red and green eyes of Maniac, now wide open in fury. The armor’s color scheme was no longer mismatched, but was instead a deep brown for the bodysuit and concrete gray for the solid armor. He had short, somewhat twisted horns projecting from his helmeted forehead and they had a stony, slate gray look. That stony look was repeated in his feet, which had a cloven hoofed appearance, and in his very oversized right fist, which was cocked back and ready to strike. Trailing, deep-brown hair accented his forearms and lower legs. His icon had changed to the Zodiac symbol, Capricorn.
“Yirtsad oiyyy!” Bass screamed, firing away at the charging navi, but Capricorn (Maniac) wasn’t even slowing down. He closed the short distance as Bass was finishing his shriek and struck out with his great stone fist.

~Bass’s former holding room~
“There sure is a lot of noise out there,” Lan commented with a forced casual voice.
“Yeah, and for once, I suggest we stay out of the fight,” Flashman said to him. Jackie had just finished tying a makeshift bandage around the wound on Lan’s arm.
“We’ll have to put a new one on you when you defuse,” the female NetOp said to her patient.
“I know,” he replied, “But that’s fine. The cut’s really not that bad.”
“It’s not good either,” Jackie scolded him, “I would’ve expected a NetSavior to take this more seriously.”
“I am taking this seriously,” Lan protested, “But we’re in the middle of a mission and I can’t afford to worry over a small injury. There are more important things to worry about.”
“Well, yeah, I guess,” Jackie responded, looking away from Lan and letting her head drop slightly, “Like Lyne and Connor.”
“Hey, you treat Jackie better than that!” Flashman suddenly said, “Don’t be so harsh with her!”
“It’s OK, Flash. He wasn’t being harsh. We do have to keep our minds on he mission.” Flashman grumbled slightly but didn’t argue with his NetOp. Jackie looked up again and turned her worried attention to the door Bass had gone through. “It’s really noisy in there. I wonder how he’s doing?”
The answer came quite suddenly when the cloaked navi crashed through the wall. He hit the ground and tumbled a bit, but rolled to his feet when he stopped. “Oiy llew yup rif tuht!” Bass yelled as he charged back at the hole he’d just made. Maniac ran through the hole after Bass, tearing the hole wider and flinging the broken-off piece of the wall at Bass. He fired at the debris, stopping it, then morphed his arm back into a Dark Blade as Maniac charged through the cloud of dust left behind.
“What the heck’s that!?” Lan exclaimed when Maniac charged in.
“Another Zodiac navi,” Jackie answered, “Uhh, Capricorn.”
Huh? It’s eyes look like that other one’s, the crazy one, Megaman thought to himself as he looked at the Zodiac navi through Lan’s eyes.
“Jackie, we should help him out,” Lan suggested and fired his buster at Maniac, who was in a grapple with Bass. The shots managed to get the enraged navi’s attention. He broke his grapple with Bass and pushed the berserk half-navi away. Maniac then raised up his fist and slammed it violently into the concrete floor, cracking the concrete and sending out a shockwave that unbalanced the other occupants of the room.
“Maybe we should stay back,” Jackie suggested as Maniac and Bass struck at each other again. Maniac howled as Bass’s blade cut him, then swung upwards, knocking Bass back again.
“No, he’s in trouble,” Lan said, activating a Cyber Sword and starting forward. He was stopped by his partner’s hand grabbing his shoulder, just before a streak of dark purple energy sizzled by his face.
“Seriously boy, don’t get involved in this,” Flashman warned him. Lan tensed in frustration, but didn’t try to charge again as the two combatants continued to fight.

“How interesting,” Rosaline commented after seeing Maniac charging after Bass, “He doesn’t have a third personality, does he?”
“Oh no,” Mystic replied, “That’s the Vicious personality. Battle Rage is a rare thing for him.”
“That’s trouble though,” Seer said from where she was standing by Prophet’s Jump Chair.
“Why? He’s actually fighting rather well right now,” Rosaline observed.
“Perhaps, but the incompetent fool can’t do anything but fight in a Battle Rage,” Mystic disagreed, “He couldn’t understand capturing his target.”
“Don’t worry now,” Alpha’s voice called calmly, “This should prove, hmm, useful to weaken our Demon. Let us be patient.”
“Yes my Alpha,” Mystic replied and waited for the fighting pair to come back into view.

~Holding Room~
Maniac now looked, if anything, madder than ever. His face was twisted in rage and his mouth was opened as he breathed heavily and with a half growling, half rasping noise. Drool trailed down his chin as he continued to fight against his berserk opponent. Bass continued to be more vocal, shrieking unintelligibly or in the strange DemonScript.
“They’re going to kill each other!” Jackie said as she watched, a fearful tremor in her voice.
“But I think Capricorn’s wearing down,” Lan tried to assure her, “Bass will win this, I’m sure.”
The half navi made a swing at the Maniac with his Dark Blade, but the Zodiac navi managed to grab the blade with his large hand and stop it. Bass tried to jerk the weapon away, but couldn’t free it from the powerful grip. “Tal te ig oiy drutsub!” he shouted and scratched at Maniac’s face, “Llek oiy! Atalad!” Maniac responded by pulling Bass forward and head butting him, horns first. He then swung Bass around by the sword and slammed him into the ground.
“Ah! Maybe he’s not so tired,” Lan said as Maniac began kicking the prone navi.
“Spark Palm!” Jackie cried, sending the attack across the floor. Maniac, distracted for the moment, didn’t notice the attack coming and took the full hit.
“AArrraaaahhh!” he shouted in pain, turning his attention on his attacker an beginning a charge. Despite how awkward the oversized fist made him look, he moved quite rapidly.
“Charge Shot!” Lan called out, bringing his weapon to bear on the charging navi. He shot the powerful blast and, despite the target’s rage, Maniac managed to throw his right fist up protectively, taking the shot in the back of the hand. The pressure of the shot forced Maniac’s charge to halt and actually drove him backward. “Got ‘im!” Lan said, seeing that there was noticeable damage on Maniac’s hand, “Jackie, let’s take him d-”
Lan didn’t get to finish his sentence as Bass, back on his feet, blasted Maniac with a powerful attack that sent him back through the wall they’d entered the room through. “Haa, haa, haa, haa. Oiy aru tsuit oiy drutsub!” Bass screamed out as he rushed after his opponent, energy violently crackling around him.
“Uh, Jackie, let’s foll-” Lan began, but again ended his sentence when the wall, weakened by two holes being made in it, collapsed with a crash.
“Mmm, ahem, Lan, let’s get some of this rubble cleared up,” Jackie said with mild sarcasm as she went to get some of the junk out of the way.
Lan hung his head with a, “Sigh,” and followed the taller girl, “I can’t tell if this mission’s going well or not.”

~ Back Outside Mystic’s Office ~
The enraged, fighting navis crashed back into the room where the fight had begun. Bass had driven Maniac through the wall with a tackle and knocked him to the ground.
“Damn,” Mystic muttered quietly as the two grappled on the ground.
“What is it,” Rosaline asked, “Maniac could still turn it around.”
“Oh, he’s laughing,” Seer said with worry in her voice.
Rosaline glared at the two older people and spoke peevishly, “Well, what’s wrong with that? So he’s enjoying himself.”
Mystic ignored her. “Seer, get ready to force unlink them and jack Maniac out.”
“Yes sir,” she agreed immediately and turned to Prophet’s station. Her brows furrowed in concern when she saw just how erratic and weak his readings were.
“Will someone tell me whaaaa!” Rosaline exclaimed and was pushed aside by Mystic as Maniac smashed into the wall near the door.
“Keep out of the way,” Mystic ordered her, “Questions later!”
“Haaa, hah, hhahh, *gasp*, hah, hah,” Maniac continued to laugh fairly shrilly as he recovered and jumped back down at Bass, who swatted him out of the air as he approached.
“Tohs po dnu AED!” he shouted at the madly laughing navi.

“I’ve got to stop this,” Lyne said as she observed the fight with saddened eyes. “Megawoman, Jack Out!” she commanded herself, but she didn’t. “Huh? Why?” she pondered confused.
“Maybe if you weren’t in that ZN Capture Cell,” a soft voice said behind her.
She placed her hands out in front of her, only to hit a solid surface. “I’ve got to get out. Who are you? Can you help me?” she asked as she looked around her, confused and still not able to see anyone around her except the immobile navi frame.
“Of course I can,” the voice replied, “Just stand still for a sec. ‘Kay?”
“Okay,” Lyne replied and she stayed absolutely still. After a few seconds, she fell forward.
“There that oughta do i…” the voice said as its owner took notice of Lyne sprawled on the floor. “Are you OK Lyne?” he asked as he helped her up off the ground.
“Yeah. Oww,” she said as she rubbed the back of her neck while taking a good look at her rescuer. “Nights! How’d?”
“The security on their network is crappy. Besides, I think my brother has their hands full at the moment,” he said, redrawing Lyne’s attention to the vid window she was looking out of earlier.
“Thank you for freeing me Nights,” she said as she gave the harlequin a hug before she logged out.
“You’re welcome I guess,” he said as he blushed and scratched the side of his face. “Being hugged by an Angel isn’t that bad. I hope Connor enjoys it.”

Lyne appeared off to the side of the mind jumper chair located in the floor of the warehouse where the fight was taking place. “Angel Wings,” she quietly commanded, making two small wings form out of her back. Her sudden appearance caught Maniac’s attention. He stiffened at the sight of her and his eyes widened in shock.
“Feathers,” he whimpered quietly and then charged at her, completely ignoring Bass. “No, no! Aaaahh, no feathers!” he screamed and started flailing at Lyne. She managed to dodge the attacks gracefully until Bass tackled him and started to stab his victim multiple times, without mercy or ceasing.
“Cut it now!” Mystic shouted to Seer, and she quickly complied. Prophet remained where he lay, breathing weakly, and Maniac reappeared in his PET, barely together anymore. After Maniac had completely disappeared from sight, Bass just knelt there with his weapon stuck into the concrete floor, breathing heavily.
“You Okay?” Lyne asked as she approached Bass.
“Attack Barrier,” a familiar voice called out, knocking Bass over. Bass righted himself and faced who had just attacked him.
“Kcub gnebbuts Drutsub!” Bass growled as he charged at Alpha, his newly designated target.
“My, what a foul mouth, and you’re blinded by rage,” he said as he darted quickly from side to side, avoiding attacks. “Perfect,” he said as he charged at Bass’s semi-exposed icon.
“No you won’t curse him or possess anyone again,” Lyne shouted as she used her hands to knock Alpha away and moved in between the half-navi and the evil byte.
Alpha backed off. “What are you doing stupid girl? Don’t interfere,” he said as he morphed into a gloved navi hand and punched Lyne in the face, knocking her over onto the floor.
Bass, still berserk, shrieked in rage and morphed his other hand into a Dark Blade. He charged at Alpha with his swords crossed over his chest, slashing once, then again, separating Alpha into quarters which logged out individually. Bass stood there, shaking in fury after his target was gone. “M’e llets yrgnu. Guuahhh!” he shouted as he started to attack his surroundings.
“Whhaaa!” Rosaline cried as the balcony above shifted and the wall started to crumble, “This isn’t good for the investment.”
“You’re right we don’t have demon insurance,” Mystic agreed with her as he grabbed her hand, “Get Prophet out of here Seer.”
“He’s still unconscious,” Seer replied, “We’ll have to carry him out.”
“Rrr, fine!” he replied and grabbed Prophet by the right arm while Seer got his left, “Well, at least one of us is happy about all this,” Mystic muttered in annoyance and, indeed, the unconscious Zodiac member had a tired smile on his face. They dragged him to the fire escape door and retreated through it.
“Stop it, Connor! Stop it!” Lyne called out from where she was sitting. “Stop it right now!” she shouted at him while standing up trying to make Bass stop his crazed attacking, “Stop it! Please. Wait is that a new attack?” she questioned as she took notice of his two Dark Blades. Someone suddenly grabbed her hand and wrapped another hand around her mouth so she wouldn’t scream.
“Shh… Lyne it’s me DJ. We have to get out of here. This place is falling apart,” he said as he started to drag her off to the room that she and Bass were held in the night before.
Lyne started to struggle and she managed to lower the hand that covered her mouth. “But what about Connor? We can’t just leave him,” she stated as she tried to jump out of his grip.
“He’s gone too far off the deep end Lyne. We have to get Lan out of here. He got injured by Connor.” Lyne huffed at him and then looked at Bass angrily. “But it was an accident, honest. And Jackie is taking care of him right now,” DJ added, getting Lyne’s attention.
“Well then let’s go. Which room are they in?” Lyne asked as she led the way down the hallway.
“That door right there,” DJ said as he pointed at the door directly in front of them.
“Alright,” Lyne said as she as she looked for a doorknob, but there wasn’t one. “How are we supposed to open the door? There’s no doorknob.”
“That’s funny. There was one on the other side of the door. Hey, its computer operated. I know how to open it. This will take a second,” he said as he started to compose an e-mail.

~Outside in retreating van~
The four occupants of the van were trying to calm down after the heavy excitement of only moments before. Seer was at the wheel, driving them away as fast as she dared. “Try to calm down Seer,” Mystic said from the back, “Slow down. He’s not chasing us.”
“He was almost deleted there Mystic. That was too close,” Seer said with stress cracking her voice.
“I know, but he wasn’t. Now calm down. We don’t want to look conspicuous.” Seer slowed her breathing and let up off the gas pedal. “That’s better.”
“I don’t know what you’re so worried about,” Rosaline said, acting like she wasn’t freaked out now that the building was behind them and like Mystic hadn’t had to turn around and drag her from the building (she’d frozen on the spot when Mystic let go to help drag off Prophet). “I mean, if it had been deleted, you could just program a new one. Yeeek!” The van had suddenly swerved dangerously when Seer whipped around to glare at her.
“Seer! Keep your eyes on the road,” Mystic commanded. The driver ground her teeth in aggravation, but did turn her focus back on the road.
“What are you so mad about?” Rosaline complained, unable to keep a tremor out of her voice due to the fresh shock of the swerving van, “It’s not like it was your navi.”
“Rosaline, stop talking,” Mystic ordered the girl imperiously, “You don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
“Well, then what am I talking about?” she shot back at him.
Mystic glared at her, then closed his eyes and took a steadying breath. “Prophet,” he explained, “is a Mind Jumper.”
“I know that already,” she replied peevishly, “He is, you are, she is. So what’s that have to do with it?”
An angry mark throbbed on his forehead as he continued through gritted teeth, “That means his mind is directly linked to the navi and he, like I, can feel the damage the navi takes.”
“OK,” Rosaline cut in, rolling her eyes, “So navi gets hurt, you get hurt, and it hurts a lot if the navi’s deleted. So what? He’s already got brain damage, so no real harm done. Whhaaawoof!” The van came to a very abrupt halt as Seer slammed on the brake pedal and Rosaline fell roughly to the van’s floor. “What is your problem!?” the girl complained, “Oh, as if my clothes weren’t alruurk*”
“Yes, he’s insane,” Seer spat in Rosaline’s face as she grabbed her by the shirt collar, “Nobody can deny that. But when a Mind Jumper’s navi is deleted while the Jumper is linked in, so is the Jumper’s mind!”
“Seer, let go of her,” Mystic commanded, looking at his associate coldly.
Seer complied, although she gave the girl a shove as she let go. “You coddle this brat too much,” she muttered as she went back to the wheel. Rosaline didn’t speak anymore after that, and sat for a while where Seer had left her, shocked when she realized what had been revealed to her. Though the girl got back up and took a seat, the rest of the drive was in blessed silence.

“DJ, this isn’t the time for e-mails. We need to break this door down now,” Lyne said as she attacked the door with her Megbuster. Her attack had no effect on the door. “Huh?”
“That’s not gonna’ work on that navi door,” a voice commented behind her, making her jump and accidentally fire off another shot at the door.
“Perfect timing Kid," DJ greeted the navi, "Do you think you can hack this door? We need to get Jackie and Lan out of here.”
“Sure, piece of cake,” Kid commented as he cracked his knuckles before he hooked up his hack cord, creating a key board panel, and started typing away.

~ Inside the Room ~
*Bang*Crash*Clang*Snap* were sounds that Jackie and Lan heard inside the room.
“Man, it sounds like world war three just started,” Jackie commented as one of the support beams in the room cracked. “Uh Oh! This place is gonna’ collapse. I sure hope DJ gets back here soon.”
“Have faith in him. I trusted him with Lyne’s rescue and he will do it,” Lan said as he pushed Jackie out of the way of the falling support beam. “But you’re right. We have to get out of here.”
Suddenly the door burst open. Lyne, DJ, and Kid entered the room. “Lan!” Lyne cried out as she checked his wound, “are you OK?”
“I’m fine. It’s getting better. Where’s Bass?” he asked as Lyne grabbed him.
Lyne shed a tear, “Don’t ask. Follow me DJ,” she said as she got her Angel Wings program ready to assist in her jump. DJ grabbed Jackie by the waist and got ready to follow Lyne.
“Well I’m glad to be of assistance, but I have to get outa’ here before the network collapses too. Later,” Kid said as he disappeared from sight.
After he was gone, Lyne sprang for the window and DJ ascended what was left of the box piles. As they passed through the window, Jackie and Lan’s Cross Fusions deactivated. Shortly after that, they landed on the ground and made a run for the safety of the black van. Lyne heard a fierce rumble behind her and turned around abruptly as the ground began to shake. The building they’d escaped from collapsed inward with a rolling boom.
“NO! CONNOR!” Lyne exclaimed falling to her knees as it fell. She gasped, tear choked, “No.”
“Lyne,” DJ said trying to comfort her. Lan stopped him and gave his sister a hug as she shuddered at the loss of her friend. Just then a metallic thud sounded off behind the quartet.
“What in the world is that?” Nina asked angrily as she exited the van.
“*sigh* Connor. He made it,” Lyne said in relief as she took notice of him lying on top of the van, exhausted. Somehow, he had managed to teleport out of the building in time.
“Well then he’s fine. Let’s go congratulate him,” Lan said as he started to approach Bass. Lyne grabbed his shoulder, making him stop.
“Look at his eyes. He’s still berserk. I’ll handle this,” she said pointing out that Bass’s eyes were still aglow. She then gently jumped to the top of the van where Bass was lying. He hissed at her as she kneeled beside him and tried to back away from her presence. She placed her gentle hands on him and got him into a sitting position. He shuddered the whole time she touched him as if he was afraid. “Shhh… Calm down. I’m fine. We’re fine. Zodiac’s gone,” she spoke in a gentle tone as she rocked him in her arms.
His eyes dimmed, “Lyne did I…?” he asked as his eyes locked with her gentle gaze.
She bonked his nose, “No you didn’t, but you showed Zodiac and Alpha a thing or two. *sigh* You’re exhausted. Time to rest. Bad Spice,” she commanded, causing a mushroom-like virus with hands to appear in her grasp as her face guard activated.
“Lyne no,” Bass weakly protested as she squeezed the bottom of the capped virus, making a cloud of spores which Bass breathed in. He went limp in Lyne’s arms. She then leaned him into her chest so she could pinch the top of the virus, making it pixilate away.
“He’s fine now,” Lyne said as she got off the top of the van with Bass in her arms.
“You’re mean,” he sleepily protested as she entered the van with him. “I can go to sleep on my own,*Yawn*. Stupid Bad Spice… thing,” his voice faded as Lyne buckled him in the back seat, buckled herself in, and then guided his sleepy head to her lap.
“Follow me. Armor deactivate,” she cooed a gentle command deactivating her navi armor.
“Armor deactivate,” Bass echoed sleepily as he lay in her lap, causing his armor to disappear while everyone else piled into the van, and DJ deactivated his cross fusion armor as well.
“Thank goodness Ken wasn’t on this mission. He’d be jealous,” he quietly commented as Lyne ran her fingers through Bass’s purple hair. Bass groaned quietly.
She noticed that the black streak that Famous had dyed into his hair had vanished. “You’re OK. This won’t happen again, I promise,” she vowed silently to him as she massaged his scalp, lulling him into a deep, dreamless sleep.
“Wow, Lyne really knows how to deal with this. Poor Bass,” Mega commented to the other three navis. “Why would Nights suggest such a terrible thing?”
“Maybe it was the only way to set them free,” Sonata said as he reviewed the damage to the building Bass had caused.
“Sheesh. I wonder if they got out,” Nina and Pyra pondered in unison as they looked at the now destroyed building.
“They did, but Connor dealt the Zodiac navis enough damage to put them into stasis for a while,” Lyne commented from the back as she observed her charge.
“And as you vowed Lyne, this won’t happen again,” Nights voiced from the console system in the back.
“What do you mean, Nights?” Lan asked.
“He was berserk and did a deed of good. That’s a good thing. He’ll never go berserk again. He’s completely free of that condition thanks to Lyne,” Nights replied, causing Lyne to blush and hang her head to hide her embarrassment.
Mega now nodded in understanding, I get it now. Bass’s brother wanted him to be freed from the berserk condition permanently, but I wonder what triggered it in the first place. He was enraged before we got there, and it was different than what Night’s had said, Mega pondered as Nights took notice of his confusion.
“Don’t’ worry about it Mega. Bass is fine now,” Night’s thought as he looked at his sleeping brother. Sleep well brother. I know you can still hear me. You’ve found your Angel partner. Protect her and she will protect you. Her word is bond, he thought to Bass as he disappeared from the van’s internal server. After he left, Nina started the van.
A buzzer went off from Nina’s PET. “Nina you have an e-mail from Mr. Famous,” Pyra piped up.
“Patch it through over to the passenger seat so Lan can answer.”
“Yes Ma’am,” Pyra replied as she followed her NetOp’s order. Suddenly a monitor activated in front of Lan.
“Commander Nina,” Famous called out once he got video on his end, and looked surprised when he saw Lan.
“She’s driving Mr. Famous,” Lan replied to the confused NetSavior Commander.
“Oh, and no need for formalities. How are they doing?”
“We’re fine,” Lyne called from the back, “Shhh… Connor’s resting,” she said quietly as she pressed her finger to her lips, causing everyone to quiet down so that the hum of the van’s engine was the loudest noise.
“When he’s done resting both of you need to come over to NSHQ stat, and Nina, you and your Team.”
“Kinda’ hard when I used Bad Spice on him Famous. He’ll be out for the rest of the day,” Lyne said in a casual tone as she stared at the screen with Famous on it.
“Berserk?” Famous asked as he took notice of his sleeping cousin. Lyne nodded. “Lan… What happened to your arm?” Famous asked as he looked at the blood soaked cloth wrapped around his arm.
“Oh this. It’s just a scratch,” Lan said as he did his best to hide it.
“You are to report to the Med Bay when you get back here Lan. Is that understood?”
Lan hung his head, “Yes Famous.” The rest of the trip was carried out in silence.

~ New Undisclosed Location ~
“Aghhh,” Alpha cried out in pain as his byte form was being repaired by Khan, who still had major repairs of his own to undertake, but Alpha came first. Alpha always came first. Mystic woke him up out of his repair mode to repair Alpha. All three of the Zodiac Mind Jumpers were jump linked to their navis to keep them more stable and to add their human wills to the navis, keeping them going despite their conditions. Khan lazily dragged his arm across his forehead before he continued to fix the quartered byte. Toxyn was working on Maniac, who had suffered the most damage out of the four. After about a half hour of screams and moans, Alpha was fully repaired.
“Damn that Bass!” he exclaimed as he exited the repair chamber. Khan and Toxyn kneeled in his presence as he passed. “Oh get up and repair yourselves. We need to be ready for the next plan,” Alpha commanded, compelling them to follow his command as he angrily fumed while he floated in mid air. That demon is becoming more and more of a nuisance. And today he was berserk. If I remember correctly, the Law of Demos states if a demon did a deed of good in an Angel’s eyes, he’d be freed of the condition, making him of no use to me, and that only happens when… he paused as he thought about what it all meant. He then felt an ancient presence pass over his hidden network. No this cannot be. An Atlantian. That’s a sure sign that they have been linked. They give me no choice now but to start Havoc. “Is Maniac in any condition to talk?” Alpha addressed Toxyn, who had disregarded her repairs to continue with Maniac’s.
“Uh… Yes Master Alpha he is,” Toxyn replied humbly as he floated over to where she was.
“Leave us, both of you,” Alpha boomed. Toxyn scrambled to the exit, leaving the other three behind. Alpha turned a sharp glare on Khan, who was looking curiously at Alpha, wondering what he’d need to discuss with Maniac alone. “Both of you Khan,” Alpha repeated. Khan lowered his head in deference, then left as ordered. After they left, Alpha floated close to the repair table that Maniac was on. It was still repairing him, even though Toxyn wasn’t watching over it. “Maniac my dear boy, I have something, hmm, special for you to work on.”
“Is it a surprise? I like surprises,” Maniac asked in an excited, squeaky tone, making Alpha’s eye twitch.
“I want to talk to the other one,” Alpha rumbled with an edge in his voice.
“Aww… Alpha being no fun.” Maniac crossed his eyes so that his red eye looked over to his green one. “He wants to talk to you,” he said to himself. He closed his eyes and his face slackened. When he opened his lids again, the red of his left eye had receded and the green in the right had expanded.
“Yes Master Alpha,” Maniac said in a colder tone of voice as his eyes focused on the floating byte. Alpha smiled in mild satisfaction.
“I have a special project I want you to work on. It requires your, hrm, ingenious skill,” Alpha said, getting his servant’s attention before he went on, explaining the devious plan to him. Maniac smiled thinly and had a look of joy in his eyes as Alpha finished explaining.
“Your plan sounds like fun Master Alpha,” Maniac responded, beginning to laugh under his breath, “Excellent. I gladly accept your challenge.” As he thought about what he’d been charged to do, his laughter grew in strength and volume, but there was still a coldness to it that made the laughter terrible to hear.
“Good Boy,” Alpha said with a nasty smile as he joined in the laughter, his voice just as loathsome as his servant’s.

~In the van going to NSHQ~
Lyne: I’m so relieved that all that’s over with now.
Jackie: Yeah, that sure was scary. But now, Bass won’t go through that again.
Lan: That’s what Nights said, so no more glowing eyes, no more fangs, no more weird DemonScript… Hey, how do you understand that anyway?
Editor: *Looks back from front passenger seat.* Aha, allow me to explain.
Nina: *Jerks the wheel slightly in shock.* How’d you get in here?
Author: *From behind Lan.* Chapter preview. Rules don’t apply.
Lan: *Jumps from chair.* Yeeeeep! Don’t do that! *Sees black hole closing under Author’s feet.* Rush brought you here.
Editor: Yeah, we borrowed him so we could, heh, heh, PopUp here. *Grins and looks around at everyone.* Hey, get it? Huh, huh? PopUp, battle chip.
*Everyone sweat-drops and palms their faces.*
Author: You’re not allowed to pun anymore. *Sighs and starts explaining.* DemonScript. What you do to translate it is, first: reverse the spelling of the word.
Editor: For instance, “M’e llets yrgnu,” was the last thing Bass said in DemonScript.
Author: So reverse spelling to, “E’m stell ungry.”
Editor: Next: replace letters U with A, A with E, E with I, I with O, and O with U.
Author: So, “E’m stell ungry,” becomes, “I’m still angry.” You see?
Lan: Oh, well that’s really pretty simple.
Megaman: And you didn’t figure it out.
Lan: Hey, that’s not fair to say! I didn’t have time to figure it out in there!
Lyne: OK, stop arguing! Let’s not wake Connor up. *Pets Connor on the head. He continues to snore lightly with a small bubble inflating and deflating from his nose.* So, can we have a real preview of what’s going to happen next?
Author: Oh, sure. You’re going to gym class.
Editor: Gym class? Neat. Say, do high school girls still wear those skirts in gym class. Hey, whoah! Put the bricks down, I’m kidding!
Author: *Eyes clenched shut and holding up tight and shaking fist with angry mark on it.* Rush. Send him home.
Editor: Oh, no. Soreeeeeeee!*Drops down into hole.*
Author: Can’t he ever behave? *Sighs* Anyway, next time on Lan and Lyne S2: Episode 6: Basketball and the Green Eyed Monster. Bye, bye. *Drops through hole.*
DJ: Basketball? Oh, no.
Jackie: What’s wrong with that?
DJ: *Sigh* You’ll see. _________________ "NetAngel Style Change Activate"

That was an awsome chapter, I have never seen bass act like that before. At least they got out of the building and everyone was ok. Well I can't wait to see what happens next. _________________

Episode 6: Basketball and The Green Eyed Monster
~ Bass’s Memory: First Nightmare ~
Bass was running down a dark hallway, hearing multiple screams of terror and pain. He couldn’t stop running, couldn’t stop moving, or he didn’t want too until he came up on a small, female, white armor clad navi, who had a look of terror on its face. He looked into her eyes only to see a monster staring back at him.
“INnnn!” he cried as from the reflection in her eyes, frightened by the sight, “Tuhw avuh E aimcab? U ratsnim?” he questioned himself as he looked back at his own glowing eyes and his face. He had changed somehow and he couldn’t remember why.
“Please stop Connor,” the tiny navi pleaded, drawing his attention once more. “Come back to me,” she grabbed and hugged around his arm, which had a buster activated on it. He calmed down a little as she stroked his buster, though the terror on her own face hadn’t yet abated.
“There he is! Knock him out before he hurts her,” he heard a navi voice behind them.
“No, he’s fine. Don’t attack,” the female navi pleaded as what seemed like ten or maybe more navis charged at them. Bass suddenly flung her off his arm to prepare to meet his challengers. “Owwie!” she cried out, causing Bass to lose his focus for a second, but he quickly turned his attention back to the approaching crowd. He met their charge and attacked the navis. Aurora got up and walked into the fighting crowd of navis.
“Atalad. Atalad oiy lluuu!” he shouted as he sprung forward. The navi he was aiming at jumped out of the way of his shot. Bass’s eyes widened with shock as he noticed who his target was now. “Aurora! IIIIIIINN!” he cried out as his shot clipped her shoulder and sent her to the ground. Next thing he saw was a bunch of hands pulling him into darkness.
______________________________________
“NOOOO!” Bass shouted as he bolted upright in his bed. He was breathing quickly and shallowly as his eyes twitched, looking about the room in a half paranoid state. As his senses came back to him, his breathing slowed to normal. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath as he ran his hand through his hair. “Ughh. That blasted memory again. Why me?” he asked as he slumped back down onto his bed. He looked over at the digital calendar on the wall. It said it was the 19th of October. “Has it been six days already?” he pondered as he remembered the last day he went berserk. His thoughts drifted to the look on Lyne’s face. She was concerned for me, not what she looked like when I went berserk for the first time after I became a navi. Each time I went berserk she had looks of sheer terror on her face. Bass shuddered as the memory of her old expression which had bludgeoned its way back to his conscious mind.
“Connor, I know you’re up. Time to get ready for school. It’s Friday,” Famous called from down stairs.
Bass rolled over and moaned, “I don’t want to go,” before he stuffed his face into his pillow.
“I’m making breakfast,” a sweet, feminine, sing-song voice called out in reply.
Is she here? he pondered as he sprung out of his bed and scrambled his way over to the balcony. He looked downstairs to find the owner of the heavenly voice, and his suspicion was confirmed. Lyne was downstairs in the kitchen. She looked up at him and waved before she returned to cooking breakfast. She had brought Lan, Mayl, and Rush along with her. Lan and Mayl were sitting at the dining room table talking with each other and Rush was playing a game of fetch with Gospel. Famous was reading his newspaper and sipping on a cup of coffee. “ ‘Kay. I’ll be right down,” he said as he left the balcony and started to change out of his PJs.
As he pulled the top of the PJs off, Famous called out, “Shower first, Connor. Then breakfast.”
“Aww Man!” Bass hung his head and slumped forward. He then grabbed the set of clean clothes he’d been planning on putting on right away and entered his bathroom to shower.
“Heh, hah, he, he,” Lan laughed, annoying Bass.
After Lyne heard her friend slam the bathroom door shut, she asked, “Has he been doing better Famous?” with concern in her voice.
“He’s had a couple of nightmares, but he’s getting over it Lyne. I’ve checked over his programming, and Nights is right. The berserk condition program is completely out of his system.” He paused to take a sip of his coffee. “Plus, his recovery seems to quicken each time you come to visit,” he stated getting a smile out of Lyne as she started to plate up breakfast.
Bass came down the stairs, ready for school. Lyne had already served Lan, Mayl, and Famous . He arrived at the table as she was bringing out the last two plates. He eyed his plate with hungry eyes as he examined what she had made. Yum, he thought as he dug into his meal, wolfing it down rapidly.
Lyne smiled at this. Good to see your appetite return, she thought to him as she started to eat. He paused and blushed uncomfortably at her concern.
“Isn’t that cute?” Mayl whispered to Lan, causing them to both giggle at the sight. Bass’s face went even redder, almost changing the color of his purple markings.
“S-stop that!” Bass demanded with a stutter, arousing even more laughter than before. He drew his hood over his head and slumped down in his chair sulkily. Lyne then shot glances at the other table occupants, making them quiet down.
“Much better,” she stated and started eating her meal again, compelling the other’s to finish theirs in silence. After Bass had finished his meal, he bolted back up stairs and quickly returned with is backpack slung over his shoulder, showing he was ready to go to school. “Alright, let’s go guys,” Lyne said, getting up from her chair and slinging her bag over her shoulder as well, followed in suit by Lan and Mayl.
Famous then lowered his paper to look at the departing half-navi’s. “Remember, I’m picking you both up directly after school. I’ve delayed that appointment you had last week, but I can’t delay it any longer. Understood?”
“Yes Famous,” they both moaned before they exited the apartment.
“Teenagers,” Famous scoffed after the door was shut behind them.

“Let’s leave them some space. Besides, I think I can beat you to school,” Mayl said as she sped away on her scooter.
“Hey! Mayl, not fair,” Lan called out after her as he chased after her on his roller blades.
Once they were alone, Bass looked over at Lyne as Nights’s voice echoed inside his head. You’ve found your Angel Partner. Protect her and she will protect you. Her word is bond, What did he mean by ‘partner’ Let alone ‘Angel partner’? I don’t understand. Oop, she’s looking at me, he thought as he blushed and turned away from her, embarrassed.
He was looking at me funny. He’s hiding something, “Connor what’s wrong?” Lyne asked. She finally got him to face her, noticing his face was flushed. She decided to not press for an answer and let him be. They couldn’t even speak to each other, and so continued their walk to school in silence.

“Guahhh…!” Bass cried out as he sent a powerful punch towards Sonata, who was holding up a practice target for Bass to hit. He made contact and continued to hit it multiple times.
“So what’s wrong?” Sonata asked as he braced against the attack.
“Nothing. Rugurhhh,” Bass replied as he kicked his target.
“I can tell. Wassup?” the gunslinger navi asked and then paused for a second. “Is it Lyne?” he asked offhandedly. Bass responded by switching targets and knocking him to the ground. After he did so, Bass just stood there and fumed with anger for a minute as Sonata got up off the ground.
Suddenly Bass snapped at him. “Why do you have to know?”
“You’ve been asking me and DJ to sneak down here for the past week and skip over third period to do this everyday. Something’s up,” Sonata said as he complacently smoothed his clothes down with a frown on his face as his NetOp nodded in agreement on an open vid window.
“We’re your friends Connor. You can tell us what’s going on,” DJ said, staring at his half-navi friend with concerned eyes.
“Grhhh… Fine you caught me. It’s about Lyne. Hughhh!” Bass cried out as he attacked the target Sonata held. Sonata, surprised by the sudden attack, had little time to brace himself and Bass’s hit knocked the target back into his face. “Oops! Sorry Sonata.”
“ ‘S Okay. I wasn’t ready for that one,” Sonata said as he righted the target strapped to his arm. “I’m ready now. Go for it.” Bass started his new charge. “So what is it about Lyne that’s bothering you?”
“I’ve been feeling weird around her since last week, Yetah!” he said as he started a multiple kick attack aimed at the small, padded target.
“Weird how?” Sonata asked, causing Bass to stop his attack to think about it.
He rubbed the back of his helmet, “Mmm, I don’t know. Just weird.”
“Maybe you like her. She’s pretty cute for a navi if you ask me.”
Bass pointed at himself. “What?! Me like Lyne. You’re not serious.” Sonata nodded along with his NetOp.
“Outbursts like that one are a sure sign that you’re in denial,” Kid said as he got up from where he’d been observing the fight. He linked down, curious as to what they were doing in the first place.
“He should know. He’s knows a thing or two about relationships,” Sonata pointed out as Kid walked up to them. “Besides, you’re not the only one. Practically all the guys in the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes, including Ken, like her.”
“Posh! I’m not in denial. Why are you both ganging up on me?” Bass scoffed as he folded his arms over his chest and looked away from the other two navis.
“Why don’t we talk about this later? We have to get ready for PE Connor,” DJ reminded the half-navi that was on his PET screen.
Bass looked at his cyber clock program. It was five minutes before the bell was about to ring for class. “Right,” he replied as he jacked out of DJ’s PET and materialized, sitting beside DJ on one of the locker room benches. “That was a good workout. I wonder what we’re doing today for class,” he pondered, stretching his arms up before he stood and undid the combination on his PE locker.
“Don’t know,” DJ replied as he got up and did the same.
“I do,” a voice said behind them, “Have you two seen Kid? I really needed him in the last class, and he just abandoned me right in the middle of our heated debate over NetLaw in Speech class. He had my arguments with him.”
“Oops,” Kid’s voice came from DJ’s PET.
“I bet that was embarrassing,” DJ commented as he grabbed his PE uniform out of his locker and Bass chuckled as he opened his locker. “He’s in my PET Ken. So, what are we doing in PE today?” DJ asked as he started to change his clothes. Bass took off his shirt, exposing his back, which was bruised in several spots and also had what looked like a tattoo. “Man that navi really beat the crap out of you last week didn’t he?”
“What’s up with the tattoo?” Ken asked, curious as to what it was.
“Those bruises aren’t that bad. The one I had on my chest was even worse. That one disappeared yesterday. My repair system focused on the worst injuries I had after the fight,” Bass explained as he pulled his PE uniform shirt over his head, “And the ‘tattoo’ as you call it on my back is my birthmark. Just leave it at that,” he said in an angered tone as he pulled on his shorts.
“Okay,” Ken replied as he started to get dressed for PE as well.
“You’re lucky. I still have the bruises you gave me,” DJ said as he looked down at his side, which was still a deep shade of purple, as he pulled on his shirt and then proceeded to put on his shorts, “I guess being half-navi has its perks.”
“I guess,” Bass said as he finished putting on his uniform.
Ken then laughed as he finished getting dressed. Bass and DJ looked at him, confused by his sudden outburst. “I know what today is. You guys were asking what we were going to be doing in class today. It’s my favorite day of the whole school year. The last day of basketball,” Ken said with stars in his eye as visions of girls danced in his head.
“No way! That’s today?” DJ exclaimed as Ken nodded with a grin on his face and his hand on his chin.
“What’s so special about the last day of basketball? You’re making it sound like some gaudy event,” Bass asked as he watched the two teens interact.
“Well my friend,” Ken said as he wrapped his arm around the half navi’s shoulders.
Bass narrowed his eyes at him. “I’m not your friend. Get off me,” he growled at him in a low rumbling tone.
“Alright, alright,” Ken said, quickly removing his arm. “*Sigh* Well anyway, today we play the girls PE class in a game of basketball. Oh boy,” he said as he started to rub his hands together, just thinking about the game.
“Is he always like that?” Bass quietly asked while Ken was still fantasizing about the game.
“Yeah,” DJ replied simply as the rest of their class showed up and started changing into their PE uniforms.
“Roll Call!” came a shout from the sensei’s office. Most of the class responded by scrambling to the front of the locker room, many still dressing on the way there. When the sensei, Mr. Lee, was satisfied that his class was mostly there, he started roll call. After roll was taken, he lowered his clipboard and started to speak. “OK guys. Today is the last day of basketball.” He paused his speech as most of the Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores cheered. Bass, DJ, and the Freshmen remained silent, but felt the excitement that filled the air surrounding this event. “Alright, jersey time. Ken heads up,” Mr. Lee called out as he threw a basketball jersey at the hacker. He continued to toss them out.
“What’s he doing that for?” Bass asked DJ, who was sitting beside him.
“Connor!” Mr. Lee called, causing Bass to look at his sensei.
“Yes, Oomph,” Bass replied as a jersey got wrapped around his face.
“Whoever gets a jersey gets to play,” DJ explained as Bass pulled the jersey off his face.
“DJ!” the sensei called once more, throwing another jersey. DJ caught it and put it on.
“Oh,” Bass said as he followed in suit.
“Alright. The rest of you get to take the written test,” Mr. Lee stated as he put the rest of the school jerseys away.
“Aawww…!” the rest of the class moaned in complaint.
“So this is a test?” Bass questioned DJ.
“Kinda’. Be glad you don’t have to take Mr. Lee’s written test. It’s hard.”
Their sensei clapped his hands, getting their attention. “Alright everyone. Out to the gym.” At his command the class filed out of the locker room and headed out to the gym. When they got there, the girls class was already warming up and taking the written test.
“Hey, look who’s playing,” DJ pointed out, getting Bass to look over at the girls half of the court. The girl he saw in particular was Lyne. As he was watching her, he saw a ball coming at him. He reflexively caught it as it came close to his chest.
“Alright jerseys, get out there and practice. Everyone else tests,” Mr. Lee called out to the class.
“C’mon Connor, lets go. Toss me the ball,” DJ said, encouraging his half-navi friend to follow him out onto the court.
“Whatever,” Bass muttered under his breath as he threw the ball in his hands at DJ and joined the rest of his team on the court. Shortly after practice had started, a whistle blew, signaling it was time to get off the court. Bass didn’t quite get this until DJ and Ken dragged him off the court. He got the idea and broke free of the shove quickly, so he didn’t have to feel Ken touching him. After everyone had left the court, Mr. Lee and Mrs. Fong, the PE sensei for the girls class, approached each other on the sidelines.
“I’ve got a real good team this time.” Mr. Lee spoke, “Heh, heh, Solid enough for my fourth victory today,” he said as he beamed with pride.
“We’ll see. You never know,” Mrs. Fong replied. They then started to converse.
“What are they up too?” Bass asked, “Aren’t we supposed to be playing already?”
“Laying down their bets and the rules,” Ken said casually, “They do this every year, Connor.”
One of Bass’s eyebrows rose in amusement. Betting on school grounds, eh? Must be a bigger event then I thought, he thought as Mr. Lee returned to where they were sitting.
“Ken, Cho, Mesu, Lai, and Angelo, you’re my starting line up. Get out on the court,” Mr. Lee said as he pointed at the 5 other male teens on the team. “Oh and Ken, you know what to do,” he said, stopping Ken and getting a nod from the hacker before he allowed him on the court.
“*Snort*” Bass sounded as the rest of the starting line up for his team passed by. “Mesu stinks!” he commented as the teen passed by.
“Whoa! I didn’t think Mr. Lee was going to use Ken so early,” DJ commented as the two teams set up for the jump ball while he relaxed against the bleachers.
“Huh?” Bass turned a confused look at his friend and missed who got possession of the ball.
“Oh! Just watch,” DJ said, compelling Bass to watch the game that had just started. “Besides Mesu’s a great player. Why say he stinks?” DJ asked.
“I’m not talking about his talent. I’m talking about his cologne or whatever guys wear to smell nice for girls. That stinks and he’s wearing too much of it.”
“Oh, but I didn’t smell anything,” DJ watched as the teams started to charge down the court.
“That’s what everybody tells me,” Bass replied hanging his head confused about why he was the only one who could smell the terrible smell that reeked from Mesu.
The boys team was on defense and Ken was guarding the girls starter. She was pointing out directions to her other team mates as Ken prepared to make his move. Once he got her attention, he started to talk to her. As Ken started to do so, DJ quietly counted down from 10. As DJ said “3” the girls starter let down her guard, blushing full bright pink in the cheeks, allowing Ken to steal the ball. “Whoa, new record for LadyKiller,” DJ said in shock as he sat up, startled by Ken’s quick work.
Impressive, Bass thought, actually quite amused by Ken’s performance, and applauded him. This got him an angry glare from Lyne, causing him to stop and look away from her, embarrassed. Why’d I do that? I hate the hacker.
Ken’s antics went on for the first half of the game. The score was boys 35 to girls 3. “Whew,” Ken breathed out, sounding exhausted as he sat beside Bass, who inched away from the sweaty teen agent. “Did you see that last one? She took 15 seconds. Man that was tough,” he said as he wiped his face with his towel.
Bass was about to reply when the sensei spoke, “Good job guys. We have a good lead on the girls team. Your performance was excellent, especially yours Ken. DJ, Connor you’re out next along with Ping, Raoh, and Marcus.”
“Yes, Mr. Lee,” they replied in unison.
“Ken. Bench LadyKiller go,” Mr. Lee commanded.
“With pleasure,” Ken said as he got up and snuck over to the girls side of the benches. He casually took a seat behind the girls team, and started flirting with them, getting instant results. That was until Mrs. Fong came up with an air horn and used it his face.
“Busted,” DJ noted with a wince.
Bass nodded, “Uh huh.”
“Get off my bench you tramp,” Mrs. Fong ordered as Ken made a hasty retreat with his hands over his ears.
“Darn, she was prepared this year for that,” Mr. Lee commented as the buzzer went off, signifying that it was time to play again. “Get out there and show the girls we mean business.”
Due to Jackie’s greater reach and height, she won the tip off for the girls team. She batted the ball over to Lyne, who was designated as the girls starter. She started her charge and the boys team bolted to their side to get into defensive positions. Lyne slowed her charge as she got close to the half court line.
“Connor, you cover Lyne,” DJ said from where he guarded Jackie. Bass quickly obeyed his friend’s command and got into a defensive position in front of Lyne. She stopped at the half court line and shot the ball. It flew threw the air with grace and ease until it hit the backboard and fell into the basket.
The girls team cheered and started dancing around at their bench saying, “10 points. Oh yeah, 10 points.”
Mr. Lee was just standing there slack-jawed as another one of the girls on the team stole the ball and did a lay-up, scoring two more points making the score boys 35 – girls 15.
That was cool! Bass thought, amazed by the shot. Hey! Wait, she should’ve gotten 3 points for that, not 10. Unless we’re playing by… he thought as he looked over at Mr. Lee, who looked saddened.
“Why did I agree to half court point rules?” Mr. Lee pondered aloud as he streamed twin waterfalls from his eyes.
Oh boy! Bass thought as he charged with the rest of his team, who now had possession of the ball. Both teams were doing a good job at defense and were more-or-less doing a back and forth trade of the ball until Ping, of the boys team, stopped at the three point line and shot the ball at their scoring basket. Bass tried to block Lyne from getting to the ball, but she managed to shake him off and knock the ball away from the goal towards Jackie, who caught it.
“Connor! Double Team,” DJ shouted, causing Bass to join him in guarding Jackie.
“Heh, what do you guys think you’re doing? You’re both too small to stop me,” Jackie said in a taunting tone as she dribbled the ball in front of them.
Angered by her insult, Bass mentally sent an e-mail to Jackie’s PET, causing it to go off.
“Hey Jackie! You got an important e-mail,” one of the girls called from the bench.
“What, during PE?” Jackie pondered, losing her concentration as Bass sprang into action and stole the ball from Jackie.
Lyne shook her head as she watched the whole thing. Time to take things into my own hands, she thought as she stopped him at the half court line. “That wasn’t nice,” she said as she gracefully swept around him and took possession of the ball. Before Bass could get it back, Lyne said, “This is what you get for cheating.” She released another shot from the half court line.
“Whoa!” Bass said in amazement as it sunk into the hoop effortlessly.
Jackie managed to steal the ball again. “Yo! Lyne ten seconds!” she shouted as she threw the ball to her. Bass tried to intercept, but Lyne was too quick for him and immediately shot off another shot from the half court line, getting the same result and tying the score as the buzzer went off. Lyne giggled cutely as she returned with Jackie and her team to their bench.
“Of all the lowdown, rotten tricks,” Bass muttered as he stomped his way back to his team’s bench, “How’d she do that?” he grumped angrily at his friend as he pointed at Lyne.
“Don’t know,” DJ said as the PE sensei’ went to talk to each other, standing between the benches.
“Looks like Mrs. Fong wants a one-on-one match. Single shot wins,” Ken commented. Mr. Lee was waving his arms around angrily and Mrs. Fong examined her nails. This argument went on for a little bit before Mr. Lee threw his arms up in the air and stormed back towards the bench. Lyne was sent out by herself.
“Oy, oy ,oy. Man you give that woman an inch and she takes a mile,” Mr. Lee commented as he returned to the bench. He placed his hand on Bass’s shoulder, making him cringe at the unexpected touch. “Connor, get out there!”
“Huh, Me?” Bass asked in confusion as his sensei got eye level with him.
“Yes you. You’re the only one I have her height,” Mr. Lee said as he forced Bass to stand up, “Now get out there. Keep that ball grounded and score when you can. You have five minutes,” he said as he gave Bass a gentle shove out onto the court. It took Bass a little bit to recover from the initial shock of being chosen because of his height, but he met his challenger.
“So Coach Lee decided to have you play. Are you really any good?” Lyne asked as she placed one of her hands on her hip.
“You really want to find out if I’m any good, huh?” he asked as a basketball was tossed into his hands. He dribbled it a little, then twirled it on a finger on his left hand and popped it into the air, catching it, still spinning, on the finger of his right hand. The spectators cheered him on, and their applause got louder as he rolled the ball back along his arms and shoulders to his left hand again.
Lyne smiled at her opponent and clapped appreciatively. “My turn, Show Off,” she said as he tossed her the ball. Lyne picked the ball out of the air with her left hand and smoothly dribbled it between her legs crossways to her right hand, then back and forth behind her back before going into a couple of fast dribbling figure-eights between her legs. Once she’d completed the loops, she bounced the ball hard onto the floor, sending it high in the air, then bounced it off her forehead back at Bass, who leaned sideways and used the back of his heel to kick the ball in an arc over his head and neatly into his hand. “It’s not soccer, Connor,” she said while the crowd cheered on, “I’m getting bored. Let’s quit showing off and play,” Lyne purred as she leapt into action, taking the ball away from Bass, who was showing off more tricks, and charged down the court towards his basket.
Oh no you don’t, Bass thought as Lyne went up to shoot. He jumped up and smacked the ball back to the ground. This actually had Lyne surprised, letting her guard down for a bit, as Bass grabbed the ball and dribbled it down the court before Lyne could recover it.
So that’s how you wanna’ play, Lyne thought as she fouled the shot he tried to make, then flung the ball towards Bass’s goal. They both chased after it, neither of them able to get the upper hand and both of them getting increasingly frustrated.
The back and forth possession of the ball and fouling of shots went on until one of the shots Bass made bounced off the board and back onto the court. Both half navis made a run for the ball and grabbed it from either side at the same time. Everyone in the room jumped as the loud !!BANG!! of the ball bursting echoed through the room. While Lyne and Bass stared at each other in shock, the buzzer timing their five minutes went off with no score on either side, signifying a tied game.
Bass then squatted down and poked the flattened ball curiously. “What happened to it?”
“It just popped, Connor. Great game. You’re learning a lot,” Lyne said as she held out her hand. Bass accepted it, allowing her to pull him back to his feet. “Maybe we should be a little more careful in public,” she whispered as she looked at the ruptured ball.
“Eh, yeah, maybe,” Bass said, rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment. Disgust showed on his face when he realized how sweaty he’d gotten. “How do you humans get used to this?”
“It’s just natural, Connor. Sweat is the body’s cooling system.”
“Oh, but it’s still gross,” Bass said as he started to shake his hand off.
“Showers,” Mr. Lee called out from the side line.
“See ya later. Get washed up,” Lyne said as she went and joined her class. The girls were applauding and patting her on the back.
“Okay Lyne,” Bass said with a smile on his face as he joined his class to hit the showers. Ahh, why do I feel so weird? he pondered, looking at Lyne, while his class congratulated him.

Lyne was sitting on top of one of the picnic tables located under an autumn-colored tree, talking to Jackie.
“So what’s being a NetAgent like?” Lyne asked out of curiosity.
“It’s cool I guess. I’m really nervous about this weekend though,” Jackie replied in a shy tone as she sat down beside Lyne.
“Why?” Lyne asked, confused by her friend’s tone.
“Because…” Jackie paused and looked around to see if anyone was in earshot. She then leaned in close, “NAT 001 is doing a training mission that will last all weekend. I’m on that team.”
“That sounds exciting. I wish I was a NetAgent too so I could join you. I wonder what I’ll do all weekend without your company,” Lyne said as she slumped her chin into her hands, which were resting on her knees.
“You have Bass to hang out with,” Flash piped up from his PET, “Not like one weekend without Jackie is going to kill you Lyne.”
“Oh that’s right. Connor’s free this weekend. Now I wonder what we should do. Maybe the arcade or a movie or the park. Ooooo so many choices,” Lyne said as Bass, DJ, and Ken joined them.
“So wassup?” DJ asked the two teenage girls.
“Oh… Jackie was telling me what you guys would be doing this weekend. It sounds exciting,” Lyne replied with a smile.
“Uh, Jackie, you weren’t supposed to tell anyone,” DJ said in an embarrassed tone, making Jackie hang her head in shame.
“Hey! You be nice to Jackie!” Flash piped up from his PET.
Ken approached the sulking girl. “Cheer up Milady. It’s just a rookie agent mistake. No biggie. Please cheer up,” he said as he wrapped his arm around her and ran his finger under her chin causing her to blush and Lyne to look disgusted. “Question?” Ken asked as he unwrapped his arm from Jackie’s shoulder and wrapped it around hers. “How were you able to pull off those ten pointers?”
Lyne suddenly froze at the question due to Ken’s touch. She wanted to run away, but she was unable to move an inch. As Bass looked at their interaction, he fumed with anger. Taking notice of this, Ken decided to push it further. “C’mon Lyne, aren’t you going to answer me?” he asked as he ran his fingers through her hair. Lyne shot a scared, angry glance at Ken as he did so. Bass clenched his fists at his sides and started to shake with anger. Ken then leaned in close to Lyne’s ear. “I was told to do this by Mr. Lee. Heh, plus, I really like the look on Connor’s face right now. Now tell me how you were able to do those shots?” he whispered his question into her ear, causing Bass to go over the edge.
He activated her Security Program! Bass thought as he shoved Ken very hard off the table to get him away from Lyne. The hacker got the distinct impression of green in Bass’s red eyes. “Leave her alone. You’re making her uncomfortable Hacker!” DJ backed off from the group, along with Jackie.
Ken rose up and brushed himself off. “Oh, Oni, trying to be tough now, huh?” Ken asked as he gave Bass a shove back.
“Don’t call me Oni, Hacker!” Bass shouted at him with a deep scowl on his face.
“What you going to do about it… Oni?” Ken said, egging Bass on.
“I said stop that. I’m not an Oni!” Bass shouted at him as his muscles tensed up against his self-restraint. He glanced uncomfortably over at where Lyne was still sitting. I can’t fight in front of her. She might get hurt, he thought as Lyne stood up.
“Ken, please stop. You’re hurting Connor’s feelings,” Lyne pleaded as she stood between them.
Lyne why? Bass wondered as she stood her ground, despite her security program being active.
“Connor! Don’t you mean Bass? The Net’s Number One NetCriminal. He’s definitely an Oni!” Ken shouted as he stomped closer with every word. “Why have pity on such a foul thing?” he demanded as he jabbed his finger at Bass and started breathing heavily, waiting for Lyne’s answer. Bass scowled at him.
“Ken! Stop it! Bass isn’t that bad. Calm down,” Kid piped up from his PET to try and quell the fight.
“How can I when the school’s most beautiful lass takes pity on an Oni? He’s not even human,” Ken replied in an angered, jealous tone.
Lyne started to become misty eyed. “*Sniffle* He is human. You’re the one who’s being an Oni,” Lyne shouted at him as she got up in his face and poked him in the chest, making the hacker back off in surprise. “*Sniff* Let’s go Connor. Famous is here,” she said in a quieter tone as she gently dragged him off towards a white van that was parked in front of the campus’s gate.
Ken just stood there, shocked that at what Lyne had just done to him. “You know she’s right. That was uncalled for,” DJ said as he placed a hand on his shoulder. “Kid’s right too. Bass has changed and isn’t our enemy anymore thanks to Lyne restoring his system.”
“*Sigh* I know. I don’t know what came over me. Do you think I’m jealous that he has what I lost?” Ken asked as he released his shock.
“Heh, heh. Maybe my friend, but you know he deserves to have a girl like her,” DJ said while he was thinking, What do you mean ‘what you lost’? as Tony and Alexa joined their group.
“Yes, he’s still learning how to be human. Who better to teach him how to be one?” Tony commented as Alexa nodded to his response.
“I have to admit, you have a way with words, Tony,” Alexa said as she hugged his arm in a loving way. “Let’s go. Our ride is here,” she said as a black van drove up to the gate. The whole group got into the van and it drove off.

Editor: *Hands script to Lan.* See for yourself. Careful though. It’ll self-destruct in sixty seconds. *Grins. Everyone glares at him and sweat-drops.* Oh come on. Don’t any of you have a sense of humor?
Lan: Megaman does better jokes with the Humor program installed. *Looks at script.* So, our next episode of Lan and Lyne S2 is Episode 7: Badges and Chips? So what’s going to happen?
Author: You’ll find out at the meeting.
Lan: Hey, could I get a ride there? I’m gonna’ be late if I have to skate there.
Editor: Sorry, but the scooter fits two.
Author: Then you’d better get walking Hon. *Pushes Editor off.* Let’s go Lan.
Editor: Hey! That’s not fair! Why do I have to walk?
Author: You make too many bad jokes. If I see you on the way back, I’ll pick you up. *Drives off with Lan on the back.* And I can be your fangirl if you really want one Lan.
Lan: *Blushes.* Uh, Okay.
Editor: Huh? No! *Chases after scooter.* Come back here! You can’t have my Author! Whhaaaaaaaaaaa! _________________ "NetAngel Style Change Activate"

Episode 7: Badges and Chips
~ Famous’s Van ~ 19 Oct 200X ~
Famous was driving across the Dentech Bridge as he took a glance at his angered cousin. “So… how was school today Connor?” he asked calmly.
“That human deserves to be deleted,” Bass muttered as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Connor! You know that’s not true,” Lyne scolded from the back seat.
Bass looked back at her and narrowed his eyes. “Why should you care? He activated your security program!”
Lyne sat in her seat and shuffled uncomfortably, a little embarrassed that it did activate when Ken touched her. “It’s never happened before when anybody else touched me. Maybe it was the question he asked.”
“Which one!” Bass exclaimed in an angrily.
“They were both the same,” Lyne replied, “He wouldn’t stop asking about the shots I did in PE class.”
“You know, that had me puzzled too. How were you able to do that?” Bass questioned Lyne who just sat there and blushed. Bass eyes went wide with shock as he thought of something. “You didn’t cheat did you?”
“Noo!” Bass narrowed his eyes in disbelief at Lyne. “Honest,” Lyne said as she pressed the tips of her forefingers together nervously, “I just practiced that kind of shot when I went to school in America.”
“Really,” Bass replied in a sarcastic tone.
Lyne nodded as she pulled up a video file on her PET and showed it to Bass, “See.”
He just gawked at the video as it played, showing shot after shot after shot making it into the hoop. Maybe I shouldn’t press the issue further. I almost activated her security program this time. Why does she have to be so sensitive? “School was fine, Famous,” Bass finally replied as he turned back forward in his seat.
“Well that’s good to hear,” Famous smiled as he slowed the van to a stop in front of a building and parked the van. “Alright, we’re here,” Famous said as he got out his driver door and opened both the passenger door and rear sliding door. “C’mon, this is important if we’re going to be on time.” Bass and Lyne looked at each other, confused by what Famous had said. “We don’t have all day. Come on.” They shrugged their shoulders, got out of the van, and followed Famous towards the building. The building towered over them and had a large set of stairs that lead the way towards the doors. As they were ascending them, Famous threw his keys to the van to a person that happened to be descending them. The other person caught them, entered Famous’s van, and drove off.
“Wow,” the half-navis breathed out in amazement as they took in the impressive building.
“This way you two. We’re almost late,” Famous called out to them, compelling them both to follow him inside. Once inside, Famous flashed his PET to the person at the front desk, who then pressed a button that opened an elevator on the other side of the lobby.
“Welcome back Commander Famous,” the desk clerk said with a sweet smile.
“Thank you, and it’s just Famous.” Famous then walked up to the elevator with Bass and Lyne following in his wake. Once inside the elevator, Famous punched in a code on the door that caused the doors to close and make the elevator suddenly accelerate upward. This caused the half-navi’s to lose their balance in shock.
“Only elevators on the net travel this fast,” Bass commented as he regained his balance. Lyne just sat on the floor of the elevator with wide-open eyes.
“That’s true,” Famous said, standing there unfazed by the speed of the elevator, “but this is a state of the art building even though it may not look like it from the outside.” After he spoke, the doors opened. Famous then exited it into a long hallway which the trio crossed and entered a door that slid open as they approached it. “Please take a seat and make yourselves comfortable,” Famous said as he gestured towards two comfy chairs that were in front of his desk. They sat down at his request and waited for him to sit behind his desk. As they sat there, Famous took notice how quiet and nervous-looking they were.
“My, aren’t we silent? Aren’t you both at least curious about why you two are here?” Famous asked as he rested his chin on his hands and leaned forward.
Bass shuffled around a bit before he spoke, “Actually yes I am. Why’d you drag us to this building?”
“Yeah,” Lyne piped up in agreement, sounding just as nervous.
“Glad to see your curiosity has been piqued. Ahem… It is my appointed duty by the International Defense Council to give you these,” he said as he pressed a button on his desk that sent out two beams into the half-navi’s PETs.
“Huh?” they both grunted in confusion as they looked down at their PETs.
“Go ahead and check them out,” Famous encouraged.
Lyne and Bass each grabbed their PETs from their holsters and activated the file they were given. A hologram projected from their PET screens, one that Lyne instantly recognized NetSavior Badges. Cool! Lyne thought with a smile on her face.
Bass looked at the hologram in shock. No way! “But, bua… I don’t deserve this,” he said as he deactivated his and hung his head.
“Of course you do. You’ve earned it, Connor. The IDC didn’t agree with me at first, but after some convincing, they finally did. They even lifted the criminal charges against you, but only if you accept that badge.”
“Connor that’s great!” Lyne exclaimed in excitement. She then blinked twice, “Don’t you think so?” she asked as she noticed the angry look on his face.
“Yeah great,” he replied in a sarcastic tone as he glared at Famous, “You know I don’t like being forced to do things against my will Famous.”
“Consider this diplomatic immunity from the international criminal charges, and a chance to stop Zodiac,” Famous said as he leaned forward again.
A chance to stop Zodiac huh… Bass thought as he looked down at his PET, and maybe Alpha once and for all. He looked back up. “I accept.” Lyne smiled at him as he reactivated his badge.
“Now that’s settled, on with your assignment,” Famous stated in a casually.
“What!? We just got these!” Lyne and Bass burst out in unison.
“Tut, tut,” Famous waved his finger at them. “It’s not a really big mission. It’s a training one. All NetAgents and NetSaviors are required to participate in at least one to become fully certified.”
“But Lan and…” Lyne started to protest before she got cut off by Famous’s raised finger.
“Lan and Chaud are an exception to the rule due to all the chaos that ensued during the Darkloid and Duo incidents. Besides, you both need to experience working with a team and as a team. You’re going to be partners after all.”
“Partners. You’ve got to be kidding,” Bass said as he waved his forefinger between himself and Lyne. Famous shook his head in reply. Lyne and Bass sat there in shock, not sure what to say about the situation they had been forced into. Suddenly a knock came from the door, making them both jump.
“Ahh, and your Mission Commander has arrived. Come in,” Famous called out as he pressed a button on his desk, opening the door to reveal Raika standing there in his cold weather coat. He entered quietly and took a seat.
“How was your trip Raika?” Famous asked his senior ranking NetSavior.
“Home’s cold as always. I’ve come here for the mission portfolio,” the Sharo Officer replied.
“Straight to business I see. Here you go.” Famous handed Raika a large manila folder. Raika took it and skimmed over the material rather quickly before he nodded and closed the folder. He then got up to leave. “Ahem, Raika.”
“Yes Sir,” Raika responded as he turned to face Famous who glared at him, “I’m sorry. Famous.”
“That’s fine. Please take these two with you to the briefing room. They will be participating in your first Command Mission Test.”
Lyne’s eyes widened in shock. “Command Mission Test? No way! It’s way too early for an officer from Sharo,” Lyne commented. “He should be doing this next year,” she commented as she looked down at a chart she’d brought up on her PET, surprised at the new info she had heard from Raika and Famous.
Too early? Too early for what?Bass thought while he just looked at her questioningly.
“Lyne, I got promoted early to First Lieutenant, remember? I’m just doing my Captain Rank Testing right now, and Command Missions are a part of it.”
“Oh right!” Lyne said as she rubbed the back of her neck embarrassed.
Raika got up and stood by the door, which slid open. “Come on you two,” Raika said as he gestured for the two newly appointed NetSaviors to follow him, which they did. Once out in the hall, Lyne suddenly noticed an urgent matter.
“Raika, where’s the bathroom?” she asked as she tugged on Raika’s coat sleeve.
“Right here Lyne,” Raika said as he stopped and pointed to a door off to their left that had a women’s bathroom symbol on it. Lyne rushed inside. Raika then started to walk up the hall.
“Aren’t you even going to wait for her?” Bass asked as he followed him. “She’ll get lost in this place.”
“No, she’ll be fine,” Raika said as he continued on.
“No she won’t,” Bass said, stopping and crossing his arms over his chest.
“Yes she will. I just sent her directions to the briefing room. C’mon, get inside,” Raika gestured at a door he was standing beside. Bass hesitated for a moment, and then entered the room, followed by Raika.
“By the way Mission Commander. Your e-mail is about to come back blocked,” Bass said as he took a seat at the briefing table and looked at Raika in a cocky way.
“What makes you say that, Connor?” Raika asked.
“Oh, I’m saying that I block all incoming e-mail when I go. What says that she doesn’t do the same thing? You know, it’s kinda’ embarrassing to get an e-mail while going to the bathroom,” Bass said as he placed his hands behind his head and leaned back in the chair.
“I guess that would be kinda’ embarrassing, wouldn’t it?” DJ, who’d arrived earlier with NAT 001, commented.
“Yeah,” Bass replied as a beep came from Raika’s PET. “Come on say it. I’m right,” Bass said as he recognized what the beep meant. Raika didn’t reply but instead rushed out to the hall.
“Lyne!” he called out as he entered the hallway. He looked around quickly, scanning for the teenage girl, but found no sign of her. “Great,” he said as he hung his head in shame.

Lyne exited the bathroom, refreshed. She stretched and then looked around, noticing that nobody was in the hall. Huh? Why’d they leave me? she thought in frustration as she looked for a door that Raika and Bass may’ve entered. Darn it! They look all the same except for the bathrooms. Maybe the NSHQ Server will look different, “Megawoman, Jack in.” Lyne digitized and appeared inside the NSHQS. She looked around her surroundings, but couldn’t figure out where she was. “This is the same too. I’m lost!” she cried out as she slumped to her knees and covered her face, hiding the tears that were about to fall.

“Oh, this weekend is going to be rather exciting,” a female navi commented in the distance.
“Yes indeed,” a spooky male voice replied, “Are you one of the evaluators this time?”
“No, just observing for Queen Serenade. Atlantis is also sending observers. I think it’s going to be Nights.”
“Oooo, that’d be an interesting surprise indeed. Do you hear something Blade?”
*sniffle, snob* came a tiny, quiet sound to both navis ear armor.
“Yes Skullman… Where’s it coming fro-” Blade asked as she took notice of a familiar, young, purple-clad, female navi. “*Sigh* I wonder what’s wrong?” she pondered as she approached Lyne. She then knelt down beside her. “Meg, why are you logged on? You’re supposed to be at a briefing.”
Lyne looked up at Blade with tears streaming from her eyes. “*Sniffle* I know, but Raika and Connor abandoned me while I went to the bathroom. *Sniff, sniff*”
“Bathroom?” Skullman asked, puzzled, “but navis do-” he started to say.
“She’s a half-navi,” Blade cut him off as she comforted Lyne, who still looked fairly upset.
“Oh, so this is one of them. Hello, I’m Skullman. What’s your name little one?” Skullman asked a gentle, friendly tone.
The friendly tone made Lyne look at its owner. He looks creepy, but he sounds nice and he’s hanging out with Blade, so he should be cool, she thought as she looked him over.
“My, isn’t she shy?” Skullman asked Blade, noticing her silence.
“She usually isn’t, but I wouldn’t blame her. She’s kinda’ upset still. Plus, I think she’s scanning you,” Blade said in observance of her behavior. “You know, a friend or foe kinda’ thing. Besides, you do look a little creepy.”
“Aw, this is true, but all navis were made different.”
Lyne nodded in agreement, “I’m Megawoman, *sniffle*.”
“Megawoman. Any relation to…” Skullman asked as Blade nodded her head. “Oh.”
Just then a vid window popped up in front of Blade. “Have you seen Lyne? I lost her.”
“*Sigh* She’s fine. Skullman and I are heading towards the briefing room with her right now,” Blade replied to the stressed Sharo Officer.
“Oh good. I thought she got lost in the network too, and thank you Blade,” Raika said as he closed the vid window.
“See, he didn’t abandon you. C’mon Meg, I have a promise to keep,” Blade said, helping Lyne up off the ground.
“OK,” Lyne replied as she wiped the digital tears away from her eyes while following after Blade and Skullman.
“This is the link you want Meg,” Blade said, stopping and gesturing at the link she meant, “We have to use a different one. See ya later.”
“Nice meeting you,” Skullman said as both he and Blade disappeared from her sight. Lyne nervously gulped as she approached the link before entering it. She ended up inside what looked like a conference room. The room was filled with familiar navis.
“Cool, Meg’s here too,” Sandman exclaimed in excitement. “Here’s an open seat,” he said, gesturing next to him. “Owww!” he complained as Scorpion smacked him on the back of the helmet.
“Sit wherever you want to Meg,” Scorpion replied with a smile while Sand was rubbing the back of his helmet and sulking.
“OK,” Lyne said as she nervously took a seat between Searchman and Flashman.
“So I guess you get to hang out with us after all,” Flash stated as he leaned his head on his resting hands.
“Yeah, I guess,” Lyne said as she started to relax a little.
“No, don’t you dare!” came a shout from the monitor that was in the center of the room, drawing everyone’s attention to it. Lyne took notice as Bass disappeared from his seat in the real conference room. He appeared in the digital one, created a chair out of excess data, placed it beside Lyne, and sat down in it while staring back at Raika defiantly. “Oh fine, you were going to have to log in any way,” Raika muttered in annoyance as he rubbed his temples, “Ahem… Now that everyone’s here, we can get started.” He opened the folder he had received from Famous earlier. “This is a training exercise which is a test of your skills as NetSaviors,” Raika said glancing at Bass and Lyne.
“Wow, a NetSavior. Just like your little punk brother Meg,” Flash commented as he glanced over at the two half-navis.
“My brother’s not a punk,” Lyne said in a quiet tone with a slight edge to it.
“And NetAgents,” Raika continued as he glared at Jackie.
“Hush Flash,” she scolded her navi. “That wasn’t nice.”
“Humph, she can’t take a joke,” Flash commented.
“Flash!” Jackie exclaimed, getting her navi to cringe involuntarily.
“Can I continue?” Raika asked. Jackie nodded quickly as she covered the speaker on Flash’s PET so Raika couldn’t hear his protest. “Good. This will also test you working together as a team. Other skills that will be tested are stealth, information gathering, communication, attack planning, and other various skills that aren’t listed on my brief sheet. For some of you, this is a certification exercise. I, being the mission commander, will expect the best out of all of you,” Raika said as he eyed all navis and humans alike while he pressed a button on the conference table, sending Searchman a digital folder.
Searchman opened it up, getting his NetOp’s silent command to start the navi briefing. After he nodded at his NetOp, signifying he understood, he closed the vid link to the real conference room, which made most of the navis nervous.
Shortly after it was closed, Flash couldn’t take it any more. “Why’d you have to do that?” he burst out as he stood up and angrily glared at Searchman.
“Sit down Flashman,” Pyra responded as she forced Flash to sit back down in his chair, “We have a separate briefing from our NetOps, so relax.” Flash crossed his arms over his chest and looked away from her stubbornly.
“Yes. Carrying on with the mission brief,” Searchman said as he made the digital conference table disappear to reveal the projection dome that was underneath it. He took a file out of the folder and placed it on top of the projection dome. “Ahem,” he cleared his digital throat before reading the contents of the folder in his hand, “Mission Situation: World Three has seized a good portion of the Undernet. They have taken Undernet citizens hostage and are planning something. Our mission is to infiltrate the Main Base in this section of the Undernet,” he said as a display of the base appeared from the projection dome, “Gather any information for liberating the Undernet Citizens, find out what they are up to, and either sabotage or destroy it if necessary,” he finished explaining as more target maps were displayed from the projection dome.
Searchman then opened up the folder to reveal a floating chip. “We will be also using an experimental chip on this mission. This chip will be used by our team’s scout: Pyra,” he said as the chip disappeared from the folder and appeared in front of the NAT Commander’s navi.
“Oh I see. This would be the stealth part of the mission,” Pyra guessed, and Searchman nodded in reply. She hummed quietly as she looked over at Lyne and Bass, whose excitedly glimmering eyes were locked on the chip. “We’re going to need a test subject.” The light in the half-navis faded as Pyra looked over at them.
She’s not going to use the chip on us, is she? Lyne asked Bass, horrified at the thought.
I hope not, Bass thought back as Pyra rose up from her seat. If she tries something, I’ll attack!
“Bass, can you do a favor for me?” Pyra asked as Bass got into a defensive position, ready to strike out if she tried anything. “Don’t be like that. I just want you to summon Gospel for me.” Both Lyne and Bass breathed a sigh of relief.
Better him than me. Bass then placed his thumb and middle finger in his mouth to produce a shrill whistle that summoned the virus wolf.
“Arouu!” Gospel howled as he appeared in front of Bass, wagging his tail. Is there anything you want me to attack Dark Element Master? I’ll gladly do it for you, “Growlll.” Gospel got up into an attack pose, ready to strike at anything Bass commanded him to attack.
“No, just sit there,” Bass said, causing his virus to whine and obediently sit in front of him. Bass then smiled evilly, “OK Pyra, I’ve summoned him.” Prya slowly and cautiously approached the virus. Shortly after she started her approach Gospel took notice of a chip in her hand.
Gospel’s attention was caught by the chip in Pyra’s hand, and he took a defensive stance with a snarl.
“Gospel. What’d I tell you?” Bass huffed at his virus for disobeying.
Gospel sat back down,Just sit here.
Right. Now sit and no biting, Bass thought as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Arouu,” Gospel complained while hanging his head in shame.
You’re mean, Lyne scolded Bass as she stared at him coldly.
Hey do you want that chip used on you? Bass replied back. Lyne she shook her head from side to side rapidly. Didn’t think so.
“Don’t worry Gospel. This won’t take long. You’re just going to demonstrate how this chip program works. Your master and Meg are curious,” Pyra said as Gospel glared back at Bass who sweat-dropped in response, but being a loyal virus, he surrendered to Pyra by lowering his head, exposing his neck behind his frill. Pyra inserted the chip into the exposed area. The chip quickly went to work, causing Gospel to shrink to about the size of a puppy.
“Ooooooo.” “Cool!” “Kawaii!” came replies from the other navis. Satisfied that she had demonstrated what the chip could do, she removed it, returning Gospel to his normal size.
“Good boy,” Lyne said as she patted him on the head and gave him a bug treat for his reward. Gospel wagged his tail in response and gobbled down the bug treat. He then jumped up on her to lick her face, causing Bass and her to laugh.
“Heh, ha, ha. Stop Gospel! Please,” Lyne pleaded as she got knocked down to the ground by Gospel’s weight. Gospel continued to lick her more as the group started to gather around them.
“That chip is so cool. Lemme’ see that,” Flash said as he snatched up the chip from Pyra’s hand. “Hey, this is a Press Chip Program. Not an experimental chip.”
“Really? I haven’t seen one of those before,” Sand said as he took the chip from Flash. “Wow, this is awesome!” Sand exclaimed as he gawked at the chip.
“The mission brief says it’s called a Mini Chip Program not a Press Chip Program,” Searchman said in a semi-angry tone, “Give that back to Pyra. That’s an order.”
“Hey! Lemme’ see that!” Kid said excitedly, ignoring Searchman, as he took the chip away from the mesmerized Sandman. “Well looky here. It’s a modified version of the Press Chip.”
“No way! Lemme see that,” Bass said as he snatched up the chip. His eyes went wide with shock as he recognized the chip’s picture. The hacker was right. This is a modified version of the Press Chip, but modified to do what else other then shrink things? “Huh?” he grunted in surprise as Kid snatched it back from him. “Hey! I wasn’t done analyzing that,” Bass growled at him as he took it back from Kid.
“And I wasn’t done either,” Kid said with a glare at the half-navi as he claimed it again.
“I wanna’ see it again,” Sand said as he took the chip, starting a fight among the three navis.
“HEY!” “OWW!” “NO FAIR!” “WHO’S BITING ME!?” “MINE!” came various shouts from the cloud of dust that started to form around the three.
“Boys,” Lyne commented as she Pyra, Sonata, Flash, Scorpion and Searchman sweat-dropped while Gospel started barking and dancing around the cloud of dust, obviously cheering his Dark Element Master on. “Are we going to stop the fight?” Lyne asked out of curiosity.
“No, but if they break that chip, they’re going to get extra duty. I don’t like trouble makers and they’ll learn that,” Searchman replied.
“Oh,” Lyne said as she hung her head. Suddenly, the chip slipped out of the combatants’ hands and flew up into the air.
“Get that chip!” Searchman commanded, causing everyone to scramble about to try and catch it. The quarreling navis continued to fight as the others frantically tried to catch the chip with them underfoot. Pyra had it until she bumped into Sonata. Flash then caught it after her until he tripped over the cloud of dust and got dragged into the fight inside it. It was now Lyne’s turn to try and catch it.
It slipped out of her hands a couple times before she caught it. “Whew,” she breathed out as she dragged her free hand across her forehead. “Here you go Pyra,” she said as she held it out to the commander. Before Pyra could reclaim it, Lyne got bumped from behind, causing her to fall forward. She managed to catch herself with her hands, but felt choked and started to cough. Help me, she pleaded in thought as Pyra and Sonata came to investigate what was going on with her.
Bass heard her plea and shoved the other navis off of him to go to her aid. “What’s wrong?” he asked as he knelt down beside her. Lyne could only cough in response. “C’mon Lyne. Tell me,” Bass pleaded as Lyne started to shudder and shake.
“*Cough, Cough,*” Choking. Help me! Lyne thought as she continued to shake, shudder, and cough.
“Oh, that’s easy,” Bass said as he got ready to smack Lyne on the back.
As he swung, Pyra called out, “Wait she might have the chi-” Bass made contact with Lyne’s back, causing the obstruction to disappear.
“Better?” Bass asked, noticing Lyne starting to breathe more easily.
“Yes, thank you,” Lyne said gratefully, and started to shrink.
Bass’s eyes went wide with shock, “Uhh, ha, ha. What were you trying to say Pyra?”
“That she might’ve had the chip in her mouth. One of you guys bumped her as she was giving it back to me,” Pyra replied as she glared at the trio of fighters.
Lyne started to look confused as she noticed the others stare down at her. It didn’t take long for her to register something was wrong with her. She ran up to Bass, who now towered over her, and cried into his cloak, making him uncomfortable. He then got an idea.
Lyne felt a sudden rush as Bass snatched her up, flipped her upside down, and started to shake her. Come on, reject it! Reject it! he thought as he started to shake her harder.
I’m trying! Stop shaking me, “Ughh... You’re making me feel sick,” Lyne complained, helpless to stop Bass’s antics.
“That’s the point. C’mon reject it!” he said, not giving up on his idea.
“That’s not going to work Bass,” Kid commented, “The chip got inside her programming and it’s probably installing right now. Fat chance getting her to reject it now,” Kid finished stating, causing Bass to stop and glare at him and Lyne to become misty eyed.
“I don’t wanna’ be small,” she cried out in a tiny voice as she started to break out into streaming tears from her eyes. Then the shaking caught up with her, giving her a sudden dizzy spell. “Ohh, whoah. I wanna’ ge’ big again.”
“*Sigh* The briefing is over. You’re dismissed,” Searchman sighed as he palmed his face. “Bass, Kid, Sandman.” The trio winced when their names were called out. “I want to talk with you.” The three male navis hung their heads as stayed put. “Scorp, take Meg with you and wait outside the link to this site.”
“Yes Sir,” Scorpion replied as she gently took Lyne from Bass’s hand and left the digital conference room along with Sonata. Pyra was providing aid to Flashman, who was left unconscious from the fight. Searchman paced in front of the three navis for a minute, seeing that they knew they’d done wrong. “You three aught to be ashamed of yourselves. Fighting is not tolerable behavior amongst NetAgents and NetSaviors. Neither is it for navis,” he said as he glared at Kid and Sand, “or half-navis,” he added with a glare at Bass. “Your antics injured one team member,” he gestured at Flash, who was starting to recover, “and caused another to carry a great burden she might not be able too. Meg has now become the scout.”
After he finished his speech, little black auras of shame hung around he trio, Bass’s being the blackest of all. “I don’t tolerate troublemakers. Kid, Sand, you have extra duty tonight. That means you both will be going over these files for the mission.” They both nodded as he handed them both 10 100KB files each. “Now get started,” Searchman commanded, compelling them to link back to their PETs.
Bass still stood there and hung his head in shame. “Bass you also have an extra duty,” Searchman said once they were alone.
“Yes Searchman,” Bass said quietly.
“I outrank you Bass. You’ll address me as Sir when you’re receiving an order. Understood?”
“Yes sir,” he replied just as quietly, still thinking about what he helped do to Lyne.
Boy he’s taking this hard, but that’s no excuse for his misbehavior, Searchman thought as he got ready to give Bass his extra duty. “You will be watching over Lyne to make sure she doesn’t have any problems with the Mini Chip Program.”
Bass looked up in surprise, “Wha? Bua-”
“Would you rather explain this whole mess to her father?”
“No,” Bass replied hanging his head again. He knew how unforgiving Lyne’s father, Yuuichiro Hikari, could be.
“Well then, get watching,” Search said. Bass started off towards the link. “And,” the military navi added, bringing Bass to a halt, “Don’t forget. You both need to be back here by 0800 tomorrow morning for mission start time. Try to be early.”
“Yes sir,” Bass replied as he teleported away.
“Did someone get the name of that truck,” Flash moaned, holding his hands to the sides of his head while Pyra and Searchman sweat-dropped in reaction.

Sorry I had some testing all week for school so I fell behind on the reading. For ch 6 the basketball game was pretty cool and I wanted to kick kens a$$ for being annoying. For ch 7 the briefing was straight out funny. I could only amagine all that trouble that happened in there. _________________

Wow, it's been a LOOONG time since I've been here. (Blame it all on Neopets for being so fun![and time-consuming!] )
Anyway, Chapter 6 was great! Hilarious and great to read about, though I could say "watch" because of this imagination of mine....
Chapter 7 was funny too. Especially the squabble over that Press Chip.
This is a LOT better than playing on Neopets-! :D Oh yeah-! Keep up the good chapters! _________________ "When it rains,it pours. When it pours, get out of the rain." -quoth me!

Episode 8: Installation
~Outside Briefing Room ~ 19 Oct 200X ~
Bass stopped in front of Scorpion and slumped his shoulders forward. She was a bit confused, seeing the half-navi act this way. “Is she Okay?” he asked in a solemn tone.
“Uh… Yeah, but she’s still a little dizzy from you shaking her so roughly,” Scorpion replied as Lyne moaned in her hands. “You have to be careful with small things. They’re fragile and could break with rough treatment.”
Bass lowered his eyes, feeling even more ashamed. “I have to watch over her. It’s my extra duty for fighting in there.”
“Oh. Here you go,” Scorp said as she gently surrendered Lyne over to Bass, “Remember to be gentle, OK?”
“Yes, Scorpion,” Bass moaned sadly as he took Lyne from Scorpion and walked away from her with Gospel following behind him. Bass walked sluggishly along and hardly seemed to be paying attention to where he was going. His canine companion whined in his concern and leaned against Bass to get his attention. I almost hurt her again, like when I was berserk, he thought as he stopped and hung his head. Why do bad things happen to me?
Gospel rubbed his head into Bass’s free hand trying to get his Master to scratch his head. This wasn’t that bad Master, Gospel thought as Bass absentmindedly responded to Gospel’s prodding, It could’ve been worse, he added. Bass stopped scratching Gospel’s head and the virus wolf sat down by his side. Bass took a seat as well and sighed.
I guess you’re right. How was she supposed to know she had the chip in her mouth? She thought she was choking and called for help like a normal person would’ve. That’s probably what I would’ve done.
Nah,Gospel thought as he scratched his chin with his hind paw, Knowing you Master, you’d not tell anyone until your face turned all purple.
Bass grimaced at this and turned away to hide an embarrassed blush. He knew how stubborn he was about wanting assistance and he felt awkward at his companion pointing this out. I’ve always been a loner. I’ve never needed help before. Except last time. He looked down at the tiny half-navi in his hand. I needed her help to stop me from being berserk, and she helped me even though I didn’t ask. I hate going berserk. I lose control. He looked sharply away from Lyne.
“Never again. Nights promised,” Lyne piped up, startling Bass enough that he almost dropped her.
“Wait. What did my brother promise?” Bass asked as he brought her up to his face.
“That you would never go berserk again. He said you did a deed of good while you were berserk last time, which freed you of the condition. I want down. Please?” Lyne pleaded.
“But I’ve always had that problem. It couldn’t just simply vanish,” he said as he placed his friend down on the ground beside him.
Lyne nodded in agreement with what he had said. It was rather odd that it would simply delete itself from Bass’s system. “Ask Famous,” Lyne suggested, “He said it was gone too this morning while you were taking a shower. *Whah* I don’t like this!” she cried as she looked herself and her surroundings over, “Why couldn’t I reject that chip program. Did my system think it was food?”
Bass shrugged his shoulders, “Don’t know. Maybe my relation can fix the problem, so you’re not forced to be the scout.” This caused Lyne to stop moping and glare at Bass.
“Huh? And when were you going to tell me about this?” she growled loudly despite her tiny voice.
Bass rubbed the back of his neck, “Well I thought you knew since Pyra was supposed ta’ use the Mini Chip, and that Searchman mentioned that she was going to be the scout because of it,” he finished with a sweat drop forming off to the side of his helmet.
“Your cousin better be able to fix this. He’s the one who programmed the chip,” Lyne commented as she brought up a download window that had all the chip’s information on it.
“That’s good to know. Let’s go to his office and talk to him,” he said as he picked up Lyne while he stood, getting an uncomfortable moan from her. He then linked over to Famous’s Work Page. Once they arrived, he noticed two out of three of Famous’s navis were conversing: Gateman, and Punk.
“Ahem,” he cleared his throat, “Is my relation in his office? I need to talk with him,” he said as he hid his arms under his cloak and Gospel appeared by his side.
“What about?” the spiky headed Punk replied in a rather sharp tone.
“None of your business,” Bass replied as Punk rose from where he was sitting until Gateman stopped him, causing Punk to return to his seat while Bass blew a razzberry at him and Gospel growled.
“That’s uncalled for Bass,” Gateman said, making Bass stop his antics and Gospel quiet down. “Famous is back at the apartment. He got off early today.”
“Thank you for your cooperation,” Bass said in a grateful tone as he disappeared from their sight along with his virus wolf companion.
“Why’d you stop me from wiping the floor with that little punk?” Punk asked angrily of his fellow navi, “He was hiding something under his cloak!”
“Call it intuition my friend. Let’s get going. We have a mission to prepare,” he said as he rose up from his seat.
Punk sulked for a second before he gave in to Gateman’s request and also rose. They both left Famous’s WP to the exercise site area.

~Famous’s Apartment Server~
“Are we there yet?” Lyne asked in an impatient tone. The distance to the server seemed further for her since she was smaller.
“Yes we’re here, and …” Bass replied as he opened up a vid window to look for his relation, “he’s here too. C’mon, let’s jack out and tell him the problem.”
“But… What if?...” Lyne piped up, “What if the chip affects me as a human too?” she asked as her eyes misted.
“I’d be more worried about that then you should be. I only have one DNA Matrix, you have two of them, and so there shouldn’t be a problem. You should switch over when we jack out,” he said as he looked over at Lyne, who was seated upon his shoulder.
“Okay.” She calmed down a little and nodded, signifying that she was ready to go.
“Jack out,” he commanded, causing them both to materialize in the real world, up in his room. Bass opened his eyes as he deactivated his armor.
“Connor!!!” Lyne called out to him, and Bass looked around for her.
“Lyne! Where are you?” he asked as he felt something latch onto the back of his leg. Bass gritted his teeth and squeezed his eyes shut while whispering a little mantra of, “Please no. Please no. Please no…” He turned his face down to face the something on his leg and cautiously opened one eye. Sure enough, Lyne’s height hadn’t changed, but he was right about the matrix switchover, and luckily her normal clothes had shrunk to fit her current size. Understandably stressed at the situation, the miniaturized teen had drops of moisture forming at the corners of her eyes. “Oh boy,” Bass commented nervously before calling out, “Famous!”
“Oh, you’re home. How was the briefing?” Famous called back, but received silence in response. The scientist’s curiosity was sparked by the lack of reply and he wondered what could be wrong up in his cousin’s room. He quickly ascended the stairs just in case Bass was hurt. Once up the stairs he noticed something rather odd. An unusually (well, impossibly) small human latched onto Bass’s leg. “I’m guessing that briefing went bad?” Bass nodded. “Well let’s see if I can do something about this,” Famous said as he bent down and tried to pry Lyne off Bass’s leg. “C’mon Lyne. Let go of Connor,” he said as he gently massaged her hands.
Although reluctant at first, she finally let go so Famous could carry her down the stairs with Bass following in his wake. When they arrived downstairs, Famous flipped a few switches, activating a terminal and a diagnostic chamber (DC). Once they’d fully powered up, he gently placed Lyne down beside the DC. “Jack in Lyne.”
“OK. Megawoman, Jack in,” Lyne said and digitized into the DC.
“Now relax. This shouldn’t take long,” he said as he activated a few programs on the console, which scanned Lyne and brought up a diagnostic window. Famous put his full attention into studying the information, making the occasional, “Uh huh… hum… uh huh… uh… OK… hum…” This made Lyne start to feel nervous and Bass feel uncomfortable.
After a few minutes, Bass couldn’t take it anymore, “Can you fix it or not?”
“Nope,” Famous replied as he continued to look at the program.
“Why not?” Bass asked in irritation.
“The chip is too far into the installation process. Removing it now will hurt her system, possibility even delete her.”
“Oh,” Bass commented quietly as he looked back over at the DC, seeing Lyne hang her head.
“The thing that bothers me is how she ended up with the chip inside her programming in the first place,” Famous said while tapping a pencil on the screen. “This shouldn’t have happened if it was equipped to her.” He glared at Bass coldly, making him gulp nervously. “Tell me what happened, Connor,” Famous commanded in a calm tone.
It took a little coaxing, but Bass finally told his guardian everything that happened at the briefing and the extra duty he’d been assigned because of it. He ended his explanation with a heavy sigh and hung his head.
“That’s what I thought I’d hear since I already knew about this,” Famous said as he closed out the windows on the console, “Raika had Searchman e-mail me about the situation.”
“Wha? Then why ask me what happened?” Bass burst out at his older cousin.
“I wanted to see if you were going to be honest with me. Which you were,” Famous replied as he finished closing the windows, “I can see you really didn’t mean to be party to what happened and you’re willing to take your punishment. By the way, the package you ordered last week came in today. It’s up in your room and Lyne gets to help.”
“My T.V. Yes,” Bass said as he pumped his fist, “Huh? Wait, Lyne can’t help.”
Famous turned away from his console, “Why not?”
“ ‘Cause she’s to small to be of any help,” Bass replied as he crossed his arms over his chest in protest.
“I’ve added it to your punishment.”
“But…”
“I’m your guardian I can do that. Now get up to your room and get your TV straightened out with Lyne’s help,” Famous said pointing up at Bass’s room. The half-navi silently turned and walked to stairway leading up to it.
“Hey wait for me!” Lyne cried out as she logged out of the DC and rematerialized in the real world wearing her normal clothes, and in her normal appearance, before teleporting over to sit on Bass’s shoulder.
Bass stopped when he felt her land on it. “Get off me. You can walk,” he snapped at her.
Lyne looked down at the steps. She then shook her head, “No way am I climbing these stairs on my own. I’d waste too much energy.”
“OK fine, but I’m not carrying you around my room.”
“Thank you,” Lyne said in a grateful tone as she hugged the side of his face. Famous chuckled at the sight and Bass practically ran up the stairs to escape his cousin’s notice.
Once he reached the top, he came to a sudden halt. “Stop that! You’re embarrassing me,” he hissed as he pulled her off his face and placed her on the ground.
“Why are you being so mean to me? My current problem is mostly your fault,” Lyne huffed as she looked up at him while he walked up to a box. “Plus, you’re supposed to keep an eye on me.” She watched him open the top of a fairly thin box. “And why’d you have to order a TV? Your cousin has plenty of them. He could’ve given you one,” she stated as she gestured down at all the television monitors that lined the far wall of the studio apartment.
“Don’t you think I asked? ‘You can’t have one of these ones. They’re for navi research’,” Bass said, mimicking his cousin’s voice.
“That’s right,” Famous called up the stairs, “and stop copying me, Connor.”
Bass rolled his eyes in response before he continued to open the box. He pushed the sides down to reveal a plasma TV. “Wow! This is neater then any of those ones!” he exclaimed as he looked it over. “Now where to put it? Hum…” He looked around his room, rubbing his chin in contemplation.
“There,” Lyne piped up as she pointed at the ceiling in front of the couch, “It has a wall mount.”
“But I don’ wanna’ put it on the ceiling. It’d fall off.”
“And how would you know?” Lyne asked as she placed her hands on her hips.
“…I’ve already tried it with my last TV,” Bass replied uncomfortably as he hung his head.
“You have no luck with appliances do you? Let’s see… you blew up the microwave at my house, three toaster ovens, those were all Famous’s, and your first TV. You’re on a roll.”
“Microwave was Lan's fault not mine, and you know it."
"Yeah, yeah, but you still broke a good quality TV like that one," Lyne pointed out.
"SO! I don’t plan on breaking this one. I don’t have a guarantee on it. Uh… Why not place it here?” Bass gestured to the wall in front of his couch.
Lyne hummed as she thought about this. She climbed onto his couch, using Gospel as a ladder, sat down on it, and looked at the wall. “That’s a nice place. Don’t forget to use the wall mount.”
“Right,” he said as he picked up the mount and placed it on the wall. He then let it go, letting it crash to the floor. He glared at the “uncooperative” device, then tried to attempt to do the same thing again, getting the same result. Lyne shook her head as she looked around and saw Famous’s tool box. She hopped off the couch and walked up to it.
“That won’t work,” Lyne commented after the wall mount crashed to the floor for a third time. “You need to attach the mount to the wall with screws, preferably on studs.”
“What are screws and studs?” Bass asked confused as to what his tiny friend had suggested.
Lyne pointed at the small bag beside Bass’s feet on what was left of the TV’s shipping box. “Those are screws,” she said and Bass picked up the bag to look at it.
“Oh I see. So that means I need my relation’s screw gun or a screw driver.”
“Screw gun; it’s faster.”
“OK, but what are studs?” Bass scratched the top of his head as he looked down at the bag of screws, “Are they in here?”
“No. They’re solid beams inside the wall. We have to find at least one to get a good mounting place for your TV Connor. There should be a stud finder in the tool box,” she said, jabbing her thumb back behind her at the tool box. Bass kneeled beside the tool box, opened it up, and started to search its contents. He found the screw gun but no ‘stud finder’ and frowned in mixed confusion and frustration. “I’ll find it,” Lyne said as she peeked inside the box, standing on her tip toes. “Umm… That’s what you’re looking for,” she said, indicating a small, black, plastic bar about as long as her arm.
Ok maybe I was wrong about her not being of any help, he thought as he picked it up, She seams to very knowledgeable about human tools. “How do I use this thing?” he asked as he examined it.
“You place it against the wall and it will find the studs,” Lyne said, pointing at the wall.
“But you said studs were inside the wall. Wait…” he paused in thought, “This little thing can see through the wall.”
“Kinda’. Why not give it a try?” she asked in encouragement.
“OK,” Bass replied as he stood up. He walked up to the wall and placed the little black bar against it. “Now what?”
“There should be a button on it. It should be in the middle.”
“Yeah.”
“Press it in and then drag the stud finder across the surface of the wall.” Bass followed her instructions to the letter and slid the little bar along the surface of the wall. He suddenly stopped.
“What does this mean?” he asked as he pointed at the stud finder that now had a solid red light on it which Lyne could barely make out from where she was standing.
“Cool. It found one,” she exclaimed as she bounced up and down excitedly, “Mark that spot so you don’t have to use the stud finder again.”
“I don’t have anything to write with on me,” he said as he glared down at Lyne.
“Oh,” she said quietly, “Stay here, I’ll find you something,” she said as she ran off in search of a writing implement.
Bass started to chase after her when he realized if he moved, he’d lose his spot. “*Sigh* Fine,” he breathed out as he stayed put, “There should be one on my desk.”
“Okay,” Lyne called back as she ran up to his desk. When she got there, she looked up to where the top of the desk was. That’s really high. I might have to teleport up there. She tried to, but it didn’t work. She didn’t have enough energy to do a full teleport to where she needed to be. She bit her knuckle, trying to figure out what could do without asking Bass to leave his spot. Maybe I can still activate my armor, she thought and called it up. Yes! Now Angel Wings, activate. The small wings sprouted from the back of her armor and she crouched down to ready herself to jump. Suddenly, she launched upwards towards his desk. She glided faster than she had anticipated, but realized she hadn’t put enough power into her jump as her momentum died. No, she thought as she reached out for the edge of the desk while flapping her little wings rapidly to keep her somewhat aloft. After all her efforts, she had managed to grab it. She then hauled herself up on top of the desk. “Whew,” she breathed out in relief.
“Can you hurry up? My arm is getting tired,” Bass called over to her in complaint.
“Hold your horses,” she said as she walked up to his pencil holder.
“I don’t have any horses.”
“It’s an expression Connor,” Lyne called back as she pulled a pencil out of the holder, “Got it. Here I come.” She left the pencil holder with her prize and walked towards the edge of the desk. “Eeiii!” she screamed as she tripped over the mouse cord and fell off the desk. Bass, ignoring his previous task, swiftly caught her before she hit the ground. “I could’ve landed just fine,” Lyne grumped as she sat in his cupped hands, still holding onto the pencil she had acquired.
“That chip program wasn’t going to help you from that fall. It deactivated as you fell. You know it wasn’t designed to prevent you from falling after you trip over stuff. Heh, he,” he said as he brought her back to the wall in front of the couch and placed her on his shoulder.
“You’re mean,” Lyne huffed, even though she knew he was right about the chip.
Bass restarted his stud search and this time it didn’t take long for Bass to operate the finder. “There, I found it. Now mark it,” he demanded, getting a cold glare from Lyne. “Uh… um... Please?”
“Much better,” she replied as she turned towards the wall with the pencil raised. Bass leaned his shoulder toward the wall so Lyne could reach the spot she needed to mark. With a little difficulty, Lyne managed to mark the wall centered on either side of the stud finder. When she finished, she let go of the pencil, letting it drop to the floor, and slumped to her knees in exhaustion. “Oop!” she exclaimed in shock as she lost her balance, but she was caught quickly by Bass.
“I think I can handle it from here. You get some rest OK.”
Lyne rubbed her eyes as he brought her over to the couch. “I’m fine. I wanna’ keep helping you, *Yawn*,” she protested sleepily as he put her down on his couch.
“Just listen to yourself. You’re low on energy, and tired.”
“I’m hungry,” Lyne burst out, completely ignoring what he had said and looking like she was about to cry.
Whoa! That was a major mood swing, Bass thought as he backed off from Lyne, expecting her to attack. “Uh… Gospel can you get her something from the kitchen.”
Sure. Anything for Light Element Master, Master, the virus replied as he left Bass’s room to descend the stairs to go to the kitchen
Man, it’s going to take me forever to teach that mutt not to call her that. I’m lucky I got him to finally call me just Master, he thought as he started to work on the wall mount. He realized that Lyne was right about using the screw gun driving the screws into the wall making his task take a few mere seconds. After he finished putting up the mount on the wall, he lifted his TV up to slide it into place on the mount. It went on with ease. “Okay, it’s not gonna’ fall. Now to get it to work,” he said as he plugged it into the wall. He smiled to himself and looked up at the screen, but his expression became puzzled. “Turn on!” he shouted at it. Nothing happened. “What’s wrong with it?” he asked as he turned to face Lyne.
“TV’s have buttons on, *Yawn*, them,” Lyne sleepily replied as Gospel returned with a small snack in a Ziploc baggie. “Ooo, a roll. Gimme’,” Lyne pleaded as Gospel brought it over to her. While she fiddled with trying to open the bag, Bass’s finger stumbled over the power button. The screen went from all black to glowing blue in color.
“Cool, but now how do I change channels?” Bass said as he looked over the buttons on the front of the TV. He found the channel up button and pressed it. The screen blinked, but was still blue. “Huh?” He pressed the button again, getting confused when he got the same result.
“You don’t have cable hooked up to it or the internet,” Lyne commented before she stuffed the last piece of the roll into her mouth.
“No problem. I’ll do that,” Famous said as he entered Bass’s room, carrying some cords over his shoulder. “Lyne, your brother dropped these off for you,” he said as he pulled out a pair of small PJ’s from his lab coat pocket and handed them to Lyne.
“My Barbie PJs? Why?” she asked as she accepted them, “Wait, does Lan know about this?” She looked up at Famous in shock.
“No, I didn’t tell him anything. He was just as confused at my request as you are right now. You’ll be spending the night here for observation purposes due to the current circumstance. I didn’t think you brought any with you.”
“*Scoff* You still have Barbie dolls? Buha, ha, ha that’s funny,” Bass said as he buckled over backwards and rolled on the floor.
Lyne became misty eyed at his comment and action. “It’s not funny,” Lyne shouted at him as she absentmindedly hugged the small PJs to her chest.
Famous picked up his laughter-filled cousin off the ground, “She’s right. Now pull yourself together and help me with installing your cable. And apologize to Lyne.”
“Why do you have to be on her side?” Bass asked, sobering up rather quickly.
“You want to change channels or not?”
“OK!” Bass surrendered, knowing that he had lost the argument. “I’m sorry Lyne for making fun of you,” Bass apologized, hanging his head.
Lyne smiled in approval and accepted his apology and Famous said, “Much better. Now for us to install the cable while Lyne gets ready for bed, and then you.”
“But it’s not even 9:30 yet. It’s 7:50,” Bass moaned as he looked at his wrist watch.
“Oop! The Running from Rain Concert will be on at 8:00. I’d better hurry,” Lyne exclaimed as she jumped off the couch and ran towards the open bathroom door.
While she was changing, Famous handed the cords slung over his shoulder to Bass for him to hold. He grabbed the ends of two of them and plugged them into the back of the TV. He secured them and then unwound the cords so he could plug them into the wall. Making double sure that he had the correct cords for the separate cable connections Famous plugged the cables into the wall and secured them. After that, Famous got up off the floor and dusted his hands.
“That’s it?” Bass questioned Famous who nodded in reply.
“Now your TV will do the rest. I suggest you get ready for bed, and you might want this,” Famous said as he tossed a little magazine at Bass.
Bass clumsily caught it, bending some of the pages, “What is this?”
“A TV Guide. Have fun,” Famous called as he descended the stairs.
Bass looked at the small magazine for a second before he threw it onto the couch, disinterested in it. He then changed into his black PJs with yellow cuffs and purple borders. Shortly after he’d finished changing, Lyne walked out of the bathroom, rubbing her eyes. After she exited, Bass went in to clean off the makeup that was still on his face. Some of it got smudged off while he was in that little brawl with Kid and Sand. Thankfully, this weekend he wasn’t going to need to hide who he was. Once he finished cleaning it off, he wet his face with water from the sink, dried it off, and brushed his teeth. After he felt all refreshed, he returned to his room to find a peculiar site.
Lyne had the TV guide open and was standing on top of what looked like a small black board with buttons. “What is that thing?”
“This is your TV’s remote control,” she said as she pressed a few buttons, “I’m changing the channel with it,” she added as she finished imputing the channel she wanted, smiling as the concert appeared on the screen. “There we go and in plenty of time.”
“I didn’t know you liked this group too,” Bass said as he sat down on his couch while Lyne nodded. “Hey, are they performing live in Dentech?”
“No. They’re on tour. This is their American Concert I think. Whoophf,” she exhaled as she sat down and pressed the info button on Bass’s remote. A little paragraph appeared at the bottom of the screen with information on the concert they were watching. “Yeah, I thought so, and it says they’re the first female navi band. Awesome.”
Bass picked up the remote and inspected it as the paragraph disappeared. “How’d you do tha’?”
“Shh… It’s starting,” Lyne hushed him as she settled into her seat beside him while the RfR began to play. The band had a mixed sound between Evanescence and Avril Lavigne; a calm haunting melody at times and then a switch to a punkish edge. After RfR had played a few songs, Lyne drifted to sleep and leaned against Bass’s thigh, drawing his attention making him feel uncomfortable.
He then looked up at the clock on the wall, 8:30… Hum… Maybe I should go to sleep too. We do have a mission tomorrow. Watch her Gospel, Bass commanded as he gently rose up from the couch causing Lyne to slide off his leg, walked up to his TV, turned it off, and walked over to his bed. He stretched before he crawled underneath his covers. Shortly after that, he was asleep as well.
Gospel then jumped onto the couch and settled into a comfortable position. He picked up the tiny sleeping figure by the scruff of her PJs, getting a quiet moan of complaint. I’m sorry Light Element Master, but you’re going to freeze without some warmth, he thought in apology as he placed her between his front paws. After he finished placing her down, she snuggled up into one of his front legs and drifted back into a deep sleep. Satisfied that she was sleeping once more, he settled down to go to sleep as well.

That was a nice chapter. Very nice.
Oye, they went to sleep earlier than I do, normally. (But a lot of people do...)
Anyway, I don't think it'd be Gravityman as the fan request, though it'd be good. Me look forward to next chapter! :] _________________ "When it rains,it pours. When it pours, get out of the rain." -quoth me!

Episode 9: Exercise, Exercise, Exercise
~Morning of 20 October 200X ~ NSHQ Server ~
Megaman was bristling with excitement. He and Lan had been invited to come early to meet the observing officials and evaluators. Rumors around NSHQ were that some of them came from a server called Atlantis and some come from Brightland. Lan was hoping that it was his dear friend Poipu Pride, who ruled Brightland.
“I thought I’d never see an Atlantian navi before. This is so exciting,” Mega exclaimed as he followed Protoman into the officials’ observatory.
“Hey, do you see Knightman?” Lan asked as he noticed Mega enter the room on the server.
Mega looked around for any sign of his friend. “Uh… No. I wonder who they sent from Brightland?” Mega pondered as he scratched his head.
“I haven’t heard,” Protoman offered, “I don’t think Chaud has either. Maybe it’s supposed to be a surprise.”
“My, my, aren’t you enchanting?” Mega overheard a navi start a conversation behind him. He turned around to see a tall, male navi in red, black, and sliver grey armor talking to a female navi in sea-blue and white colored armor. “Where are you from?” the red armored navi continued.
“I’m from Atlantis. My name is Disk. Hmm, the rumors are true. You are kinda’ cute without that demon mask, but you’re way too young for me to date,” she replied as she bonked him on the nose and was escorted away by another male navi with white hair and red and orange armor.
“What do you mean too young?” the blonde-haired, red clad navi called out to her in annoyance.
Disk motioned her partner to stop. She then faced the angered navi, “E-Mail me in a thousand years, and then we’ll talk,” she said before she turned away and continued to walk away with her escort.
The Blondie hung his head, deflated from being dumped so harshly by the female Atlantian observer. Mega walked up to him, curious as to who he was.
“So… That’s one of the Atlantian Navis,” Mega said, getting a nod from the rejected navi. “What country do you represent?” Mega asked as he bent over to try and look at the navi’s face. “Hey, wait a minute… Zero is that you?” Mega asked, causing the red navi to look at the smaller, blue clad navi.
“Megaman? I thought I’d never see you again this soon,” Zero replied, surprised by his old friend’s sight.
“Yeah. Well my friend, what brings you here?”
“Official business. My NetOp and I are representing Princess Pride and Brightland.”
“*Soft whistle*… So you finally got a NetOp,” Protoman noted, “How’d it happen?”
“Well it happened like this,” Zero began, “Sometime after we parted our ways, I was traveling the Brightland area, hearing of a mutation in some of my viruses causing havoc. I found an infected navi destroying pieces of the Net in Brightland. With a swift slash of my Z saber, I deleted the navi at the hurt cry of his operator. I contacted the operator via e-mail and apologized for the mishap. “It was my fault he went berserk,” I said. “That virus originally came from me.”
“The operator turned out to be pretty sympathetic, having a life he didn't originally want. “My father died recently,” he replied, “So I came to Brightland for his funeral. Now I've lost my father and my best friend.”
“I, hearing the boys words, immediately thought of my first friends Lan and you. I decided to do what you guys would’ve done. I offered to become the boy's new net navi, having destroyed his other one."
“ “My father left me some money,” the boy said.“So my mom gave me permission to travel the world, so long as I had my navi with me.”"
“ “That should work out well,” I responded. “I myself have traveled around the world and would be a great help.” "
““That's good,” the boy said, “What's your name?”
““I am known as Zero.exe. And you are?”
““My name's Leon. It's a pleasure.””
“And thus the partnership our begun,” Zero finished his explanation.
“So you’re in debt to this kid for deleting his navi? Didn’t think you a softy,” Protoman scoffed.
“Hey, I was trying to clean up my mess. In fact, that is why Famous called me here.”
“Huh? To do what?” Mega asked.
“To make viruses for the exercise mission,” Zero replied offhandedly.
“These ones won’t go insane will they?” Protoman asked with a little edge in his voice.
“Oh no, no,” Zero chuckled, “They won’t. I promise. Navi’s Honor,” he vowed as he crossed his arm diagonally against his chest. “Besides, I wanted to see something for myself,” he said as one of the huge observing vid windows opened up. The room pictured on the vid window was of the exercise navi briefing room.
Navis started to appear in the room shortly thereafter and took their seats. Zero took notice of one in particular: Bass. “So the rumors among the NetAgencies are true. You guys tamed the Black Shadow.”
“Uh…” Mega sounded nervously as he shuffled his foot and looked over at Protoman with a look that asked ‘should we tell him?’ Protoman nodded in response. “Well no we didn’t.”
“Wha’? But if he’s as wild as ever, why’s he working with you?”
“Oh, no,” Megaman argued, waving his hands in front of his face, “He’s tame…”
“Sort of,” Protoman added.
“Uh, yeah, just not by us,” Mega finished, scratching the back of his helmet and grinning sheepishly.
“Then who tamed him?” Zero asked perplexed at Mega’s response.
“My sister did,” Mega said as he beamed with pride at her accomplishment.
“You have a sister program?” Zero looked at his friend with an even more shocked expression on his face.
Mega nodded as he looked at the vid window. “Yep.” He looked around on the screen and frowned slightly. “Unhh, but I don’t see her.”
“She’s there Megaman,” Protoman said as he pointed at the screen, “Look at Bass’s left shoulder.”
Mega looked at the screen, squinting his eyes. Sure enough, there was a purple-clad navi sitting there. Mega’s eyes went wide with shock, “What happened to her?”
“She’s the scout,” Protoman replied.
Mega opened up his old e-mails and started to file through them until he found the one from Famous to Lan concerning the exercise and opened it. “But the e-mail says Pyra’s the scout.”
Protoman shrugged his shoulders. “I guess plans change.”
“Hush…” Zero hissed at his friends, “They’re about to start the briefing.” He pointed out as the rest of the navis arrived and took their seats and Searchman started the briefing. Mega and Protoman didn’t pay too much attention since they were players in the exercise.
“So Zero,” Protoman asked casually, “Since you’re in charge of viruses, what does that make you, an observer or a participant?”
“Participant. My NetOp is the observer. Please pay attention. As you said; plans change,” Zero growled at Protoman for breaking his concentration on the briefing.
Mega and Protoman snapped to attention when they heard that Searchman was going to be an active participant in the mission.
“That’s cheating! He’s supposed to be Mission Commander,” Mega burst out in complaint.
“Megaman, you’ve directed missions before and were really active in them. Why would Searchman be cheating if he did the same?” Protoman asked for an explanation to his friend’s outburst.
“Well, he’s got that Search Ability. That’s grounds enough for cheating,” Mega grumped.
“You have that ability too Megaman,” Protoman reminded his friend, thinking of his Search Soul. Mega hung his head, defeated.
“He might not use his ability like you might think, but if need be, have it as a backup plan if their first plan fails,” Zero added, “We better get into position. It looks like they’re about to start,” Zero said as he linked out of the observatory. Mega and Protoman shrugged their shoulders at each other and linked out as well.

~Outside Target Exercise Area~
The scene was silent as Searchman was scoping the situation at the fortress from his team’s hidden location. The fortress looked like a smaller version of a high security prison crossed with a castle. The other members of the team heard him muttering, “Zoom in…… Ah… Check Point…,” while they waited for the battle plan.
Bass and Lyne both looked bored and were sitting in the same position: legs crossed over each other, shoulders and backs slumped forward, chins propped on hands, and elbows resting on knees. The only thing odd about the scene was that Lyne was sitting on Bass’s leg, just behind his elbow. Their attention was caught when a wild mettaur with an arrow in its helmet wandered into view. Bass thought the decoration was a little unusual, but quickly lost interest and let his eyes lose focus again.
On the other hand, Lyne’s curiosity was raised. She jumped off Bass’s lap and started to tail it. She shot a few shots at it from her Megbuster, but they bounced off its helmet. Lyne then activated her Cyber Sword and jumped up to make a strong slash attack. Her sword shattered when she made contact with the protective helmet. She paused and looked at the shattered blade, then puffed her cheeks in anger and started flailing on the mettaur with her fists. The NAT 001 navis started to snicker as they noted Lyne’s behavior.
“Lyne, don’t waste your energy on that thing,” Bass scolded, getting her attention, “It’s not worth it,” he said as he picked her up by the scruff of her armor, letting her hang there limply.
“But I thought I could delete it,” Lyne replied as she hung her head, ashamed that she wasn’t as strong as she used to be. Then she suddenly flailed in Bass’s grip and shouted out, “Ahhhh! I’m the size of a mettuar! That’s not fair.”
“Height,” Flashman corrected, “Not size. ‘Cause then you’d be this big arou-” Flash said as Lyne managed to get out of Bass’s grip to jump kick Flash in the face. She then went back to Bass, sat on his left shoulder, and crossed her arms over her chest. Bass cracked a smile at her action.
“Man she still packs quite a wallop,” Flash stated as he rubbed his cheek.
“That’s what you get for doing fat jokes Flash,” Jackie scolded Flash from a vid window.
Sandman, Scorpion, Sonata, and Kid were now playing with the mettuar, curious as to what it was doing there. Searchman rose from were he was and returned to where the others were located below the bluff he had used as a look out point. He stopped in the middle of the quartet of navis that were using the poor little mettuar as a soccer ball.
He stopped it from rolling about and then picked it up by the helmet to examine it. “Hum… Looks like we’ve acquired a new team member. Meg, this little guy will sneak you inside the fortress.”
“How? I’m as tall as he is,” Lyne piped up from her perch on Bass’s shoulder.
“By hiding under his helmet. There’s plenty of room for you underneath it,” Searchman said as he ran his hand underneath the mettuar’s helmet. “Plus, with this arrow in his helmet, you should be able to hang on.” Searchman then put the little virus on the ground.
Lyne jumped down off of Bass’s shoulder to investigate this for herself. Once she was on the ground she peeked under the virus’s helmet. “Wow, it is roomy in here,” Lyne breathed out in awe.
“Meg, pay attention,” Searchman called down to her and heard a !Thwonk! come from inside the helmet. He shook his head as Lyne came out from underneath the helmet, rubbing her head and moaning. “Now for the rest of the plan,” Searchman bent down and started drawing a basic map of the fortress in the loose, fine, sand-like data that covered the cyber ground.
“There are three elemental areas along the sides and the back of the fortress. The area in the front has no element, but plenty of cover. This area here is a molten plane,” Search pointed to the left of his diagram, “Pyra, your abilities should come in handy here.”
“Yes, Sir,” Pyra replied, understanding her position.
“There’s a desert area located here, behind the fortress. Sandman, this is your position.”
“I’m going to love this!” Sand exclaimed as he jumped up and down with excitement.
“And a lake here, to the right of the fortress. Scorpion, this is your position,” Searchman said as he pointed at her position.
“Roger that,” she replied, paying full attention to the plan.
“Flash, take position here, behind these rocks at the edge of the lake and the neutral territories. From here, you’ll assist Scorpion with her attacks.”
“Interesting,” Flash said as he placed his hand on his chin.
“Sonata, Kid. There’s an unguarded access panel located here,” He pointed to the front of his diagram, “at the front of the fortress. Kid, you will provide technical backup from this point, and Sonata, you will cover him.”
“Got it.” Sonata nodded.
“Sweeeet!” Kid breathed out in excitement.
“Hum… Nice plan Searchman,” Bass looked over at Searchman, “and Raika, but where do I fit in?” Bass asked out of curiosity.
“You’ll be right here,” Searchman pointed at a spot in front of the fortress, “behind these rocks. When we have need for your Darkness Overload attack, it should have a clear shot to knock down the front gate and make a decent size access route to our objective, but only if we have need to destroy it,” Searchman explained as he drew what he was talking about. “Plus, you’re going to set the mettuar free from this position. And you, little guy,” Searchman addressed the little virus making it ‘eep’ and form a sweat drop on the side of his helmet. Noting he had gotten its attention, he continued, “Will enter the front gate with Meg under your helmet, and try to make it look natural as possible. OK?” The Mettuar jumped, skipped about a little bit, stopped, and then looked back up at Searchman. “I guess that’s OK. Oh, and Meg, once inside, use your Stealth Bomber Style Change. I don’t think they’d expect that from you.”
“Since when do you have another style change and didn’t tell me?” Bass growled at Lyne.
“I’ve had it about as long as my Net Angel Style Change. I just don’t use it as often,” Lyne replied. “I got it, Searchman,” she replied to her commander’s order before she crawled underneath the virus’s helmet. Bass then picked up the mettuar and held it under his arm.
“Alright, now that’s settled, let’s get into position and wait for the signal to advance, and remember to use the encrypted e-mail channel for any communications amongst ourselves.” Everyone nodded in agreement before they all separated to go to their positions, and Bass teleported from sight with his cargo. Searchman returned to his position on the Bluff to watch his team get into position and cover them if need be. Once they all were in position, he opened the audio channel, “OK, let’s make this mission fun for opponents. Bass, release the Mettuar.”
Bass nodded in Searchman’s direction. He placed it down on the ground and stared it down without letting it go. “You better not lose her or I’ll delete you,” he growled at the virus before letting it go. The frightened virus took off in a panicked scamper.
“Great, Connor,” Lyne moaned as she was being bumped around under the helmet of the mettuar. “Calm down little guy. Act natural.”
The mettuar stopped. But what about you? it asked in concern, If I lose you, the Black Shadow will delete me, the virus thought as he looked back at where they had come from.
“Don’t worry me. I’m fine under here,” Lyne replied as she pet the Mettuar under his helmet. Its texture was surprisingly soft, like a peach. The Mettuar started to move again, this time jumping about as if nothing was wrong.

~On Outer Fortress Wall~
“He’s back up there again,” Punk commented as he looked through a set of navi binocs at Searchman’s location. “I hate doing Raika’s test missions. He’s always three or four steps ahead of us.”
Gateman nodded. “I’m returning to my post inside. Have fun,” Gateman said as he saw his replacement, Zero, arrive.
“Sure,” Punk replied rolling his eyes before he looked through the binoculars again. “Hum… wonder what’s wrong with that virus?” Punk pondered, “Is that one of yours Zero?”
“Let me see.” Punk handed him the binocs. “Where is it?” Zero asked as he looked through them.
“Down there in front of the gate, hopping around.”
“Oh, I see it now. Nope it’s not one of mine. Must be a wild one. Nothing wrong with it,” Zero said as he lowered the binocs to look at Punk. “Metts have more of a personality than other viruses do, and this one’s personality is quite apparent,” Zero noted as Megaman walked up to them.
“What are you guys looking at?” Mega asked.
“That little mettuar down there. Looks like he’s enjoying himself,” Zero commented as the pointed down at the little virus. It was closer now, making it more visible. Mega looked down at it, recognizing it right away due to the arrow in its helmet.
“Oh, that’s my friend from the Mettuar Village.”
“The one on the frontier of the Undernet?” Zero asked.
“Yep,” Mega nodded, “Let’s invite him in. We could use him in the exercise as a virus.”
“Sure, the more the merrier,” Zero agreed. “Hey you!” Zero called down to it. It stopped suddenly and ducked under its helmet. “Don’t be afraid. You’re welcome here. Come inside.”
“That’s not going to work,” Mega said as he was about to jump over the wall, before Punk stopped him.
“Are you sure it’s not a trap?” Punk asked, thinking about Searchman watching them.
“Yeah. I’m sure,” Mega replied as he jumped over the wall and landed on the ground in front of the Mettuar. He then walked up to it and tapped it on the helmet. In response, the Mettuar peeked out from under its helmet to see if it was friend or foe.
Suddenly the Mett jumped up at Mega. “Mett, Mett, Meeett!” it chirped with joy as Mega caught him.
“My, you’re a little heavier then I remember,” Mega commented as he held his little virus friend. “You need to lay off the bugs for a while.” He looked up at the wall, “See, no trap. I’ve got him. Can you open the gate please? I want to get inside before Searchman sees me as a threat.” Punk granted Mega’s wish, but only opened the gate wide enough that Mega could slip through.
_____________________________________
Once inside, the Mett jumped out of Mega’s arms. “Hey where are you going?” Mega called as he chased after it. However, it managed to give him the slip fairly quickly. Mega stopped and scratched his head. “Where’d it go?”
Once deep in the shadows, the Mett stopped. We’re in now. I’m dropping you off here, it thought nervously. Please get out. You’re itchy, it complained as it started to stream tears of discomfort from it’s eyes.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Lyne said as she slipped out from under its helmet. “Cool,” she said as she looked around. “Thank you. Oh actually, can you keep my brother distracted so I can scope out the situation?” Lyne asked the Mett.
Sure. Who’s your brother? Lyne pointed at Mega, who was searching for the Mett. “Eep!” Him! He’s my friend. I couldn’t possibly, the Mett replied.
“Well look at it this way since you’re both friends you can play with him right?”
The mettuar blushed bright pink at the cheeks. OK. I can do that! It bounced and skipped out of the hiding place up to Mega. “Play! Mett play!”
“There you are,” Mega replied as it bounced around him.
Lyne watched from the shadows. “Encode… I’m in. Beginning Stealth Mission,” Lyne said as she audio e-mailed Searchman.
“Copy,” Searchman replied before Lyne closed her connection.
“Play! Mett play!” the Mett said as Lyne peeked out from the shadows to look for some decent place to hide. As the mettuar bounced around Mega, he noticed something move out of the corner of his eye. Responding to instinct, he activated his buster and aimed at the movement.
“Freeze!” he commanded. Lyne stopped right where she was. Mega looked down at what he was aiming at and recognized who it was. “Lyne?” he asked as he bent down and picked her up off the ground.
“Let me go!” she moaned in complaint.
“Play! Mett play!” the mettuar said as it leaned into the back of Mega’s boot.
Mega just stood there in disbelief for a second before he unmorphed his hand to cover the laughter that was about to come out. So he wants to make fun of me does he? Lyne thought as she morphed one of her hands into a cyber sword. “I said let me go!” she shouted as she stabbed it into his hand. He let go of her instantly allowing her to escape.
“Owww! Jeez, that hurt… Lyne get back here! Hey, where’d she go?” Mega asked as he looked around for his tiny sister, seeing no sign of her. “She’s gone,” he breathed out as Punk came to investigate why he’d cried out in pain.
“Lan, I need a recovery. Sis did a major number to my hand,” Mega requested of Lan as he looked his pixilating wound over.
“Sure thing Mega. Recovery 10 chip in, download,” Lan said as he slotted in a battle chip.
“What happened?” Punk asked as Mega shook his hand while his armor returned to its normal state.
“Looks like we’ve been infiltrated. I had their scout, but she got away,” Mega replied as he hung his head.
Punk patted him on the back. “Don’t worry about it. Gateman set up a bunch of his Remote Gates, so she won’t get far. See,” Punk said as he pointed down at Mega’s feet. Mega looked down and noticed what Punk was pointing at. He was standing on a remote gate.
“*Gulp* Oh boy,” Mega nervously gulped as it opened up and dragged him through it, along with the Mettuar.
“Maybe I should’ve warned him about that earlier,” Punk pondered as the remote gate closed, “Oh well.”
______________________________
On the other side of the remote gate, Mega appeared in the Mettuar Village.
“I hate Gateman sometimes,” Mega huffed as he tried to find a way back to the fortress. The search had about zero chance of success though since the gate dropped him off in the middle of the village square and it was sale day.
“Great! Lan do you have a link back to the exercise area? I’m getting tired of wading through Mettuars.”
“I think I have one. I’ll check,” Lan replied as he started to search through his links. Mega made his way to the edge of the square with his Mettuar friend following close behind him.
“Hey Mega I found it… There,” Lan said as he activated a link back to the fortress.
“Mett!” his little virus friend called out to Mega as he was leaving.
“Stay here my friend. I’ll come back later with Roll, Okay?”
“Mett, mett,” it responded happily as Mega left through the link Lan had opened for him.

~Exercise Fortress~
Lyne hummed quietly in thought as she observed Mega’s return from the shadows. “Encode… Searchman is Kid in position? I need him to check something for me.”
“Yes he is. Just a sec. I’ll forward you over to Kid and Sonata… There, go ahead, Meg.”
“Thanks. Kid, are you hacked inside the system yet?” Lyne asked the hacker navi.
“Yeah. I’m so bored. You got something for me?” he replied with a hint of excitement.
“I think so. Check the system for Remote Gates.”
“On it… WOW! The fortress is covered in them. It looks like some of them are quick routes to get around the fortress, and others go to places on the Net.”
“Hum… Is there one that I can use to get to our objective?”
“Um… Searching… Yeah, but remember you need to look for hostages too.”
“She already knows that Hacker. Where is the gate?” Bass interrupted as Lyne was about to say the same thing.
“*Gulp* The gate you want is located inside the fortress, second level. Be careful. There’s a moving remote gate on that level too,” Kid warned Lyne.
“Copy. Going Stealth,” Lyne replied as she silently activated her stealth armor.
“Be careful Meg. I can’t detect your movements in that armor. Plus, keep e-mail silence while inside. Understood?” Searchman said over the audio e-mail.
“Yes, but how am I supposed to report if I find anything?” Lyne asked.
“You know she’s got a good point,” Bass said in agreement.
“Text me if you find anything. You don’t speak when you text,” Searchman said in an angered tone over the audio e-mail.
“Oh, that kind of silence,” Lyne replied in realization. “Copy. Closing e-mail,” Lyne said as she closed her audio connection with the rest of the team. She then sent a test text message to Searchman. Receiving a confirmation that he received it, she closed her e-mail again and went in search for the entrance to the inner fortress.
After hopping from shadow to shadow, she finally found the entrance. Alright, she thought as she climbed to the top of a stone cube so she could get a better look at it. Darn, no shadows. How am I supposed to get in now? Lyne pondered as she heard some voices talking behind her. She hid behind a digital box that was on top of the stone cube. She then peeked out from behind the box to see two navis approaching the fortress entrance: Megaman and Protoman.
“I don’t know who I hate more at this moment. My sister or Gateman,” Mega boomed angrily as he passed by, causing Lyne to sulk further into her shadowy hiding spot.
“So what if she got the better of you? And it’s not like Gateman set up his gates to go anywhere dangerous. All the ones that leave the fortress end up at the Mettuar Village. You know this is an exercise,” Protoman reminded him.
“Yeah, yeah,” Mega huffed as he continued to charge towards the door while Lyne observed the second navi approaching her position, specifically noting the black colored sections of his armor.
Alright, perfect, she thought as she slinked her way over to the edge of the stone cube so she could descend it. Once over the edge she climbed down to about Protoman’s boot height and waited for him to pass. Suddenly Protoman stopped just short of where she was waiting for him. Oop, she thought as she hugged in closer to the edge of the stone to become less visible. Did he see me? she pondered.
“Speaking of Gates, you’re about to step on another one again Megaman,” Protoman said as he pointed down at a remote gate. Mega stopped, looked down, and cautiously stepped over it.
“Thanks. I didn’t want that to happen to me again. Let’s get inside. I’m ready for a data break.”
“Right,” Protoman replied as he started moving again.
Well it’s now or never, Lyne thought as she gently eased her way onto Protoman’s boot rim when he passed by her hiding spot. She felt a slight twinge of panic when she started to slide a little. Why do his boots have to be slanted? she pondered as she grabbed onto his side armor so she wouldn’t fall off. At least his armor is black around here, and he didn’t feel that, she thought in relief. Protoman caught up with Mega, unknowingly with a hidden guest wrapped around his leg.
Lyne was hanging on for dear life as the door opened and they passed through. Once inside Mega stopped and looked down at Protoman’s leg for a second, thinking that he saw something. Nah, must be the lighting, Mega thought as he shook his head.
Lyne looked around, noticing that she’d made it inside. She then jumped off Protoman’s boot, down to the floor.
“Hey!” Protoman cried out as he stopped abruptly. “Something hit me!”
“Oops,” Lyne squeaked as she hid behind some junk that was lining the right hand wall.
“I thought I saw something. It was wrapped around your leg,” Mega replied.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?” Protoman shouted back at Mega in a stressed tone.
“Hey! I thought I was seeing things. Besides it was black like your side armor. Maybe it was one of Zero’s viruses.”
“It better not be. Grrr, Where’d it go?” Protoman shouted as he started a search through the junk in the hall for the unknown thing. Mega joined him in his search.
Oh boy. I definitely don’t wanna’ get caught now, Lyne thought as she laid flat against the cyber floor and started to high crawl-low crawl (military term) towards the stairs that lead up to the next level. As she crawled along, she found a fragment of a stone cube’s data that was small enough that she could throw it. She smiled as she picked it up and got up off the floor. She then threw it behind Mega so it would skip off into the shadows on the other side of the hall, causing Mega to jump.
“It’s over there!” Protoman growled as he followed after where the noise skipped off to. Lyne laughed quietly as she made a run for the stairs and started to ascend them as her brother and his friend were distracted, scrambling about and looking for a supposed virus.
Once up the flight of stairs, Lyne laughed at their plight before she remembered about the moving remote gate. She paused and did a quick search for it before proceeding down the vast hallway. As she walked down the hallway, she heard muffled voices followed by laughter. Those might be hostages, she thought as she approached an open doorway. She then peeked her head in through the doorway. Inside were two female navis, sitting on the ground, who Lyne recognized right away: Serenade and Roll.
“Ha, ha. You can’t be serious,” Serenade laughed.
“Yep! I think Lan is gonna do it this year,” Roll replied, wetting Lyne’s curiosity to listen in on the conversation. She decided to sneak in closer so she could listen better.
“It would be about time considering all that they’ve been through, but I think he’s still gonna’ wait until he’s ready to ask her,” Serenade said as she stretched.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Hey, is it true what I’ve been hearing in Netcity? Is there really a King of Atlantis Server? Mega even said he heard mention of it.” Roll leaned closer towards Serenade, waiting for her answer as Lyne hid behind Serenade and also waited for an answer.
“Heh, heh. Yes, there is,” Serenade said as she reached behind her back and grabbed Lyne from her hiding spot. “Don’t think you can sneak up on me Lyne,” she said as she brought her hand back to her front with a small, black armored navi in her hand.
“Huh? That’s Lyne? But her armor is purple,” Roll said as she came in close and poked at the tiny navi in Serenade’s hand.
“Hey! Let me go!” Lyne shouted as she struggled to get her arms free from being pinned down.
“Chill, Lyne. We’re not going to hurt you. We’re the hostages. You can take a break,” Serenade cooed, calming Lyne down.
“Okay,” Lyne breathed out as she deactivated her Stealth Bomber Style Change. Satisfied Lyne was calmed down, Serenade placed her down on the ground.
“Wow! What happened to you Lyne?” Roll asked as she scooted closer to Lyne, and the miniaturized half navi edged closer to Serenade for protection.
“Heh, heh. You can go ahead and tell her Lyne,” Serenade encouraged her tiny friend.
“I’m participating in the exercise as the scout for the other team. Oh, I’ve got to send a text e-mail. Just a sec,” Lyne said as she went to work on her text message. Shortly after she was done with it, she sent it off, getting a confirmation that her info was received.
“Hey, did you see Mega on the way up here?” Roll asked as she watched Lyne finish up with her e-mail by closing it.
“Yeah. He spotted me downstairs. Well kinda’. He thinks he’s looking for a virus right now.”
Just then, Protoman stopped in the doorway with his back turned, looking down the hall. “Hey! Could it be in here?” he called back down the hallway, getting the other navi’s attention as Serenade quickly scooped up Lyne and held her at her chest to hide her. The Undernet Queen muttered a few quiet words which Lyne couldn’t make out and she felt odd after Serenade finished.
“Oh, Kawaii! Let me hold” Roll squealed as Lyne felt herself suddenly snatched up and hugged like a rag doll.
Roll, please stop, Lyne pleaded as she saw Mega and Protoman enter the room. Roll paid her plea no mind, apparently distracted by cuteness.
“Serenade, have you seen a little black thing wondering around?” Mega asked as he started searching around the room behind some junk that lined the walls. He then looked down at the object that Roll was coddling. “And what is that thing?” he asked as he pointed at it.
Thing?! Lyne thought in indignation, I’ll show him, she thought as she tried to move, but remained limp. Huh? What did Serenade do to me? Lyne pondered in confusion.
“Oh this,” Serenade said as she gently took Lyne away from Roll, getting a whine from the navi in pink. “It’s a present I’m making for your sister. I think she’ll like it. Being a hostage is boring and gives me time to do stuff like this.”
“Yeah Mega,” Roll agreed with Serenade, “Can’t you think of something for us to do?” Roll pleaded and batted her eyes at Mega.
“Uh…” Mega started to explain but was interrupted by Protoman.
“Not really ladies. I couldn’t find it in here Megaman. Whatever it was, it’s gone,” Protoman said as he left the room, “Let’s go on break.”
“Well, since you said it was a little black thing, it might be one of my little viruses checking up on me,” Serenade called to them before they left, “They usually get so lonely when I’m not there and seek me out.”
“See Megaman? Nothing to worry about,” Roll agreed.
“Fine. Let’s go Protoman,” Mega said, hanging his head in defeat as he left the hostage room.
After they left Roll giggled quietly. “That was funny. What did you do to her anyway?”
Yeah! Lyne thought to Serenade.
“Calm down Lyne. What I used was an Anti Damage chip on her. Deactivate,” Serenade commanded, and Lyne felt normal once more. She was then placed on the floor. Lyne moved her hands around and walked about.
“What kind of chip is Anti Damage? I felt like a limp noodle. I couldn’t even move at all,” Lyne asked as she looked up at Serenade.
“Well… Actually, the chip I used was a modified version of Anti Damage. Usually you disappear and end up somewhere else and are replaced with a plushy of yourself. In this case, you became the plushy,” Serenade explained.
“Weird, but cool. Thanks Serenade. I’ve got one more objective and I’m done,” Lyne said as she smiled with pride.
“Well then, get going,” Serenade said and shooed the miniature scout towards the door.
“Have fun Lyne,” Roll called out as Lyne reactivated her Stealth Bomber Style Change and disappeared from the doorway.
She snuck down the hallway quietly, leaning up against the wall. She paused before every entryway to make sure nobody was in the rooms. Towards the end of the hall, she saw her objective and stopped to look around for guards. Perfect! No guards, she thought as she eased herself off the wall and walked down the middle of the hall towards her objective. As she approached it, she slowed down. She felt like something was not right, but she couldn’t put her foot on it. As she continued on, she ascended what looked like a ramp to help her reach the Remote Gate at the end of the hall. Her unease grew more intense as she continued. She stopped abruptly to try and figure out what was wrong. Suddenly, a click sounded off underneath her. “Wha?” she sounded as something flung her into the air. She was too surprised to react while she plummeted towards the floor and through a hole that had just appeared.
After she disappeared, her ramp sat up and stretched. “*Yawn* That was a good nap,” Gateman said as he stood up off the ground. He then looked down at his chest, “Huh? Who stepped on my chest?” he asked aloud when he saw that it was open.

~Outside Exercise Fortress~
“Uh Oh!” Kid said over the audio e-mail as he monitored the remote gate system.
“I don’t like the sound of that Hacker,” Bass rumbled over the e-mail, “What happened?”
“Um… I think Lyne’s been captured,” Kid squeaked timidly in reply.
Everyone could hear Bass fuming with anger at this news, “Calm down Bass. We’ve got the hostage coordinates. Get ready to start the attack.”
“Copy,” Pyra responded.
Bass cracked his knuckles, “With Pleasure.”
“You don’t get to attack just yet,” Searchman scolded over the e-mail.
“Gurrrr,” Bass grumbled in response.
“Roger that commander,” Sonata replied.
“Should I move?” Kid asked in a worried tone.
“Duh, that way you don’t get hit Kid,” Flash responded.
“I’m ready! Let’s bring on the pounding,” Scorpion replied happily.
“Duaaa dah. Duaaa dah na. Dun na, dun na, dun na, dun na, dun na…” came a voice over the radio that perplexed everyone.
“Sandman,” Searchman addressed the voice’s owner.
“Yes sir,” Sand replied.
“Quit playing sand shark and get ready to attack.”
“Okay. And I was having fun too,” the tan armored navi finished quietly.
