Lark, I think, is the second form of the virus that drops the WideShot chips. I don't know about its name either...seems strange for a water virus to be named after a bird... _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! Hoo boy. I've been trying to sort out all the virus names into the form of a gallery. There aren't really any good places for this as far as I know. You've got GameFAQs, PMM, and Sprites.INC, all with virus names listed in some form, all with shoddy romanization or incompleteness. I started piecing this togther and it's hardly halfway done. It has all the viruses from EXE1 and 2, plus Boomer, plus the other recolours that appear in later games, up to what Sprites.inc has for EXE4 at least. I could use a little more input on this. Specifically, what's the name of the AquaTower VorkerGear? And what does "Honki" or "Honkino" mean? According to Sprites.inc the red Rush is "HonkinoRush".
The names listed here are the english names on top and the Japanese ones underneath. If there was little or no change then there is no top name. I'm thinking of adding another line to some of them for alternate interpretations of the Japanese names, like changing "ChaMush" to "BrownMush".

Hm, they did the same thing with the HardHeads when they made them elemental. I just listed their BN3 names even though the BN1/2 versions were technically different. They had the same pallette though, so I consider it a replacent. Hah. The same will go for the Handies. |

A triple post may be stretching it...but what the hell, I think I actually have something interesting this time.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/RaijinK/viruses1.gif
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/RaijinK/viruses2.gif
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/RaijinK/viruses3.gif
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/RaijinK/viruses4.gif
A few notes about the interpretations I made: (some old ones I'm only mentioning now)
-Fishy2, could that really be "Birdraft" instead of "Bad Draft"?, it seems "bird" fits the theme better. I think there may be another bird's name hidden in Kiorushin, so all three versions have some kind of bird in their name maybe?
-Josu didn't mention these in his post, probably because they're too obvious, but just in case, "Ammonicule" is derived from "Ammonite" (a kind of shellfish), which is what the virus is, and "ArbalBoy" is derived from "Arbalest" (a mechanical bow n' arrow), which is what that virus is, partly.
-Yeah, I made up some english names for the bn1 viruses, but only to translate the more obscure Japanese ones, like Jiira -> Miner. I know that's not a direct translation, but if a good translator for the game were to go for something true to the original meaning, that's probably what we'd get. A better example is the Drain Virus. I figured since "Chiqurito" combined "Chibi" and "Mosquito", a good english equivalent would cross "Mosquito" and "Itty Bitty". :P
-As you can see there's a big gap in the WindBox family, see the EXE4 help thread to find out why. Note how the StormBox of EXE2 and 3 gets renamed "VaccuumFan3" in BN4. I guess you could consider them entirely different though since the EXE4 version is smaller.
-Twinsest sounds too much like Twincest...ew.
-For Viruses that were in both EXE3 and EXE4, the EXE3's "SP" version became EXE4's "3EX" version. For example, in EXE3 the grey mettool is called "MettoolSP" while in EXE4 he's called "Mettool3EX". This is true for most of the viruses except for the Lala guys. For some reason instead of using the grey SP pallette they used a new green one for their LalaPappaEX. The grey colour went to LalaMute, but it still had different colour eyes and bottom, so I could't count it as a rename. So the Lala family sorta has two SP versions, the one in EXE4 I labeled as "1EX", simply because it doesn't have one otherwise.
-Josu, are you sure that's Dhardara? I'm pretty sure that was a "ru" at the end.
-As for Arachy, I know "tsu" and "shi" look really similar in katakana, but the game text makes it clearer by having the two little things on the tsu vertical while the ones on the shi are horizontal, and I'm pretty sure the ones in Kumogeitsu where vertical. I'll chack again and get screenshots after this.
-Finally, the BombBoy family. Here I think the english version got it right by making them "Boy", "Wrk", and "Lab", i.e. Boy, Worker, and Labour. "Raver"? That's just like in Command Mission where they interpreted "Dig Labour" as "Degraver". :P
Edit: Got the screenshots. Or rather one screenshot because I managed to find a battle with both of them.
So I was wrong about Dhardara, but right about Kumogeitsu. |

One thing I was just musing on, but probably shouldn't take too seriously, is the idea that the Gear family could be Bonne references. Right back to EXE1 I thought that virus bore a striking resemblance to the Bonne Family insignia, but I didn't take it too seriously until I knew the virus's name, or rather what the name meant. This Flamenvorker is an old german artillery device? Well it just so happens all the Bonne mechs were either named after German artillery or some kind of German word as well. That combined with its Gear-Skull appearance is leading me to think the similarities are intentional.
I wouldn't know how to add that "reference" to my list though. What would I do, list "Bonne Insignia" along with the Legends characters? |

Well, I suppose if it gets grouped in with Mayl's Kobun doll and Lan's Legends2 poster then there's no point. The list only concerns characters, really.
Oh, I did manage to find a sprite of Vaccuum2 after all...in EXE5. :P If I woulda just remembered EXE5 had the same six-virus system as EXE4 I could have saved myself a LOT of trouble, dangit.
Once I'm done with the sheet for the EXE5 viruses I'm putting all those sheets on the Viral Infection site. Seems like the best place for them. |

I threw together one more list besides the EXE5 one. It's the list of "viruses" in Network Transmission. XD
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/RaijinK/virusesnt.gif
You can tell I didn't put as much effort into making sprites for the NT Viruses as I did for the NT navis. I just used their 8-Bit counterparts and made one tiny alteration to one by recolouring a Gabyool sprite so that it was red (ooh, major work there) just so it corresponded to the Gabyool colours in Transmission.
I probably could have replaced Pierrobot's gear with a ball like he has in Colourman's stage, but meh, too much work. Oh, and do you think his name should still be Pierrobot when he's not a robot?
You'll notice I didn't count some of the traps seen in various stages, like the retracting ceiling needles in Needleman's stage, or the Quickman Lasers, or the Elecman zappers, since I consider them parts of the terrain and not viruses. Beak and Tunneler (real names, please?) make the cut since they can be "killed" like normal viruses, and Ladder Press...well it was listed as an enemy in one of the GB MM games, plus it moves around, so I guess it's a virus and not just a trap that's part of the terrain.
And yes, I just made up "YoMomma". I didn't think that mid-boss had an actual name, but if it does I guess I could swap it in (much to my dismay because I love the name I gave it). I was originally going to call it "YoMotherShip", going with the Yort naming theme (Yacht, Ship...uh...Land-Rover?), but realized the shortend version would be much funnier. |

Made a few lil additions to Junky's list :3
光 熱斗 Netto Hikari - Lan- The pronounciation of Netto is clearly a pun on the word "internet" or "network" while the kanji has a seperate meaning. Lan is trying to convey that same pun LAN stands for local area network
光 祐一郎 Yuichirou Hikari - Yuichirou translates to cheerful helper
光 遥か Haruka Hikari -
光 ただし Tadashi Hikari - Tadashi literally translates to "Right" so if you translate his name literally you get "Right Light" ... you know who XD
光 彩斗 Saito Hikari - Hub - The pronounciation of "Saito" is a pun on the word "Site" while the kanji has a seperate meaning, some people in Japan call websites "Net-sites" instead, which is what you get if you put both names together. Every LAN has a HUB
櫻井メイル - Meiru- Mayl - a pun on the word "Mail" the english version makes it more obvious with a literal romanization.
小山デカオ - Dekao Oyama-Dex **
綾後事やいと - Yaito Ayanokouji-Yai-Shortened Yai **
伊集院 炎山 - Enzan Ijuin- Eugene Chaud- Enzan literally transaltes to "Burning Mountain" Chaud means hot, Eugene sounds like Ijuin
伊集院 しゅうせき- Shuuseki Ijuin -unnamed
大園 まり子- Mariko Oozono-Ms.Mari - the "Mari" in Mariko is a pun on her hair style
氷川 せいじ- Seiji Hikawa- Dr. Froid - Froid means cold, Hikawa means icy river
サロマ- Saroma - Sal - Shortened Saroma"Ro" is replaced with an L Salad
黒井 みゆき- Miyuki Kuroi- Miyu - Shortened Miyuki
緑川ケロ - Kero Midorikawa - Ribitta- a pun on the noise frogs make, like Kero, Midori is also the word for green.
ミリオネア- Millionaire - Ms.Millions
名人-Meijin - Mr. Famous "Meijin" means "famous person"
荒駒 トラキチ-Torakichi Aragoma - Tora
火野 ケンニチ「ヒノケン」-Kenichi Hino"Hinoken" -Mr.Match 'Hi no ken' i beleive means "fist of fire" and Matches light fires
色綾 まどい - Madoi Iroaya - Ms.Madd Mad, insane, 'whacko'
マハ・ジャラマ - Maha Jarama - Yahoot Mahajarama is from "Mahajarama Yema" (King Yema/Emporer Enma from DBZ/YYH) the judge of souls in Indian mythology.
ジャック・エレキテル「エレキ伯爵」 - Jack Electel "CT.Elec" - CT.Zap Elec and Zap, they're associated with electricity, A-DUH.
日暮 闇太郎- Yamitarou Higure - Mr.Higsby - Higsby is a fun pun on the word Higure
アネッタ - Anetta - rules - j00
ゴスペル首領 - Gospel Boss Shuryou is a word for "commander"
帯広シュン - Shun Obihiro - Sean- They rhyme
逸見 ダイスケ - Daisuke Hayami - Speedy Dave- Speedy is a literal translation of his last name, Dave is an easy way to replace "Daisuke"
ダーク・ミヤビ - Dark Miyabi - Mr.Dark-
五十嵐ラン - Ran Igarashi - Lilly- Lilly is one of the many ways of translating "ran"
てるお じょうもん - Teruo Joumon - Terry - Teruo easily changes to Terry
アツキ 炎 - Atsuki Homura
イワン コーリスキ - Ivan Coolisky - Ivan Chillsky - Coolisky is hard enough to translate as it is >.>
Bold Text means additions.
** = already been answered.
Others:
Arashi Kagefuji- the "Ara" in his name is sort of like a pun on "air", and the "Kaze" in his name means wind.
Raoul- the RA part of his name is most likely from "rai" which means thunder.
Raika- Raika's a real Russian name if I'm not mistaken.
Takeo Inukai- i think Inukai means "dog world"
Saiko Rei- Psycho Ray...BEST. NAME. EVER. "Saiko" also means "powerful" or something along those lines.
Narcy Hide- the "Hide" is actually just a Japanese way of saying "Viddy" his english name, since the symbols for 'b', 'p' and 'h' in Katakana are similiar. |

They're similar, not identical. If his name was supposed to be "Viddy" the katakana would probably be "Bide". Just becuase the only difference between "Bi" and "Hi" is an itty bitty " mark, that doesn't mean you can take it or leave it. I think Hide means something else.
I'm wondering now. How is it some people can get the foreign text to show up in a post and others can't? What's the special secret code to get that to work? |

Good work, Zetto! I like how you explained the translations as well
Okay
Arashi Kazefuki- Arashi means "Storm" Kaze means Wind, and Fuki means lawless ness, basically "Crazy Wind Storm"
Raul- His Japanese name is "Raul" "Rauru"
Laika: A musical instrument called a Balalaika, it's kind of like a guitar(This is stated by the character designers themselves.)
Rei Saiko(Ray Phsycho) I always thought this was a pun on his special style... you know, Flashman's hypnosis was kind of a..... Psycho Ray? XD
Narcy Hide: Pun on the Japanese pronounciation of "Video" Which happens to be "Bideo" Hide is also short for his real name, Hidenosuke Yamada, but Narcy Hide is an assumed name.
Appreciate you for leaving ANetta there :3
Miyabi = "Elegant"
主領【しゅりょう】 head; chief; boss; leader.
Didn't knw about any Mahajaramas out there X_X good woik!
Hinoken is just a pun on his two names but of course could mean "Emperor of Flame" or something along those lines.
Meijin means Master, Expert and the like, not Famous.
Saroma is named for a lake of the same name in hokkaido

Also, it's probably obvious and possibly has already been mentioned, but the "Narcy" part also sounds like it's supposed to based on the word "Narcissist", which is definately one of the first things that comes to my mind with Narcy. |
