Yup, I agree with Julia.
The price is reasonable enough for everyone. Hell, I bet a 9 year old kid can buy a manga with an allowance of 15 bucks a week. 10 bucks is not alot of money, you know. Also, if you think about it, manga in japan is like 5-7 bucks, untranslated and unedited. Now, if you paid someone (Tokyopop, Viz, etc.) to translate and import manga to your home, think about the following:
1. how much shipping will cost
2. how much hiring translators and editors, possibly a whole crew to translate, edit (not a whole lot of editing, btw) and finalize a high quality, translated manga from Japan.
$10 bucks a manga is a freaking good deal. Think about it.
Save up those coins, bills or whatever and just be glad manga doesn't cost $20 a volume. |

I love the price, but I feel that "you get what you pay for" is too true...
in the case of the Initial D Anime... it's too much for crap
A "tricked out" version with (c)rap Music and "rock" music from garage bands no one will care about... Not only that, but still wince they want to make so much money, they will have only three episodes for $60 just so people will pay that much for the treasure of the classic version instead of the crap they put in... Like making the awesome looking races with fake car sounds and making it look like a bad 80s music video...
DAMN CORPORATIONS WANTING TO MAKE SO MUCH MONEY!!!
Thank you Quentin Tarantino! You showed that anime is an art form!! _________________

I agree. 10 dollars is a great price. Viz used to be $15 >: o for just 196ish pages! God, everyone is so spoiled by the cheapness of Shounen Jump manga -_-;. I would think it would be pretty cool if the price of all manga decreased to $7, though. Meh, for now I'll keep buying my manga =P. *Cuddles his entire closet of manga ^^* _________________

10 bucks is the greatest! _________________

I don't see why they feel they have to put rap music into anime. Mabey it's to appeal to the hip hop crowd or simpily because they think it will appeal to black people but that's stupid. I'm black and I like it in it's origional form. |

Yep...
that's exactly what I hate...
I don't know why, but still, mostly teens (except for people like me) listen to rap...
and yet they aim the how at "kids"
Isn't it ironic?
What's wrong with eurobeat? What's up with (c)rap? Whay put (c)rap music in? Why take out music that pretty much gets you into a good emotion and change it? _________________

We also have those idiots to blame for the crap they have on MTV and VH1. >_< Basically, an idiotic attempt to sell well.
And while the mangas are at a decent price, it's a decent price for absolute CRAP. It's $10 for something I wouldn't even pay $5 for. See my previous post for what I mean by crap. Plus the anime DVDs are complete highway robbery for even worse garbage. $60 for 3 episodes of Initial D, with a total of 39 episodes in First Stage and Second Stage combined, adds up to $780. And need I mention that their edits rival NT Crappior in terms of stupidity? Or $30 for 2 episodes of Rave Master (the first Tokyopop dub I found other than Initial D), with a total of 51 episodes, adds up to $750 plus whatever they do with the last episode. Which will probably be on a seperate volume, knowing those idiot executives.
To be blunt, the best deal on Initial D stuff in the US is a used Arcade Stage machine. Go to your local Namco-owned arcade and ask how much they want for it. It's bound to be a better deal than anything Tokyopop releases.
And by the way, when the translators think the company's doing a bad job, there's a problem. And yes, that is true of Tokyopop and Initial D. I quote, from the letter from the translators to the anime and manga community: Tokyopop translators wrote: | We talk to bigwig network execs who want all the kanji removed from the logo and the car, who want to change tofu delivery to pizza delivery, who are utterly mystified at our insistence on retaining the original Japanese sound effects and printing the manga right-to-left, and who want us to refer to Takumi as Jeffrey “because it would be easier to pronounce”! |
Quote: | We’re thinking of shrink-wrapping the ‘nicknames’ version of the manga with a bottle of White-Out and a felt-tip pen so that fans can make their own name-changes as they see fit [...] |
Quote: | [...] And some of those [fans] WILL go on to become true fans and go through all the evolutions of appreciation that we all know and love so well [...] and learning to speak and read Japanese themselves so that they don’t even have to deal with our choices. |

AMEN!
Yeah... The game is about 3m times better (except for that they still use the Tokyocrap names...)
I get to play for 50 cents!!
and you are right.. Just because kids think being from the "hood" is cool, and think that the only cool cars in the world is from that crap show "Pimp My Ride"... At least the ID gang take pride in how their car performs not how their car looks...
WWC: OMG LOOK AT THE FLAMES WE PAINTED ON!! YOUR CAR LOOKS LIKE CRAP! LET'S TURN IT INTO A SUPER SLOW RICER!!
Takumi: Hmph... Let's see, you payed NO attention to the inner workings, no change of brake fluid, The ECU is still old... This car is still not safe to drive...

Tokyopop's manga are okay, not excellent, but certainly not crap. .hack//LEGEND, G Gundam and Magic Knight Rayearth, as well as Ragnarok, are pretty well translated and almost totally devoid of re-names.(G Gundam's manga uses the same names as the US version of the Anime... Shadow Gundam instead of Gundam Spiegel... Ugh.) I've only seen their versions of .hack/LEGEND and Rave, and those aren't so bad at all.
4Kids is another story entirely. I tolerate them solely because I happen to like some of their voice actors, and because without them, I'd have nothing to make of come saturday morning. _________________

This is just my obsevation, but isn't that the stuff fans hate? As for nicknames, I've come to the point where Takumi is much easier to pronounce than Jeffery. I still don't see how hard it is for some people to pronounce things correctly. "Tah-koo-me" I don't find that very hard >.>;. Something like "Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu. Amaka Kakeru Ryuu no Hirameki" is much more difficult to pronounce =P. _________________

I actually never thought 4Kids was that bad really. I liked Pokemon and Fighting Foodons. Kirby and Sonic X are pretty good too. The only ones I didn't like were UltraMan Tiga (Cheesy battles) and F-Zero GP Legend (It just wasn't that great). Otherwise, I don't think 4Kids is as bad as you think. :] _________________

Sad, because it happens so much, eh? Pretty pathetic, if you ask me. Japanese companies should research the fanbase of America before they act. Many changes in anime happen due to the Japanese companies(unless it's ShoPro or 4Kids). _________________

They do. 4kidsTV is one of the worst episode dubbing company I have ever seen. I have no opinion on Tokoyo pop for I have not seen anything with the trademark of that. _________________

I only have one problem with 4kids (besides the main thing wrong with them). When they dubed the sonic adventure part of sonic x they gave the E-series robots horrible voices. They're supposed to sound robotic like th origional and the game not worse then those two dumb robts he has with him. That's really my only real problem with them because the
E-series are my favorite characters in Sonic Adventure 1. |
