Ok, I haven't drawn in... about 4-6 months, and I whipped this picture up a few minutes ago. The main parts I need help with are the nose, the eyes, and distinguishing male and female characteristics when drawing a person. (Notice how my person could be a female, just as easily as a male? You have to block out the hair to see it better)
So I need some critiques on his eyes, nose, general body structure, etc. and I would really appreciate it if you could give me tips on defining female and male characteristics. Thanks.
P.S. I think the girliness has to do with the eyes; how should I change them to make it more masculine? |

Let's see...the shape of the chin can help you tell whether they're female (usually round or pointed or whatever) or male (usually more square-ish looking or whatever you call it), and the eyes don't really matter, besides the size. Girls tend to have bigger eyes in some animes and mangas and stuff. But not all the time. _________________ Never call me a midget or else something will happen..to you!

IT's GINJI WITHOUT HIS JACKET OR GLOVES!!!
but yeah... The chin tells the gender and stuff... The eyes do tend to be bigger on girls to make them more "cute-sy" but if they're serious, they lower the eye size...
ex. Watch Bleach...
Orihime is a "cute-sy" girl so compare her eyes to someone like that one fireworks buidler chick... _________________

Great picture! Just a couple suggestions to help you out:
-If it's a guy, the neck is usually a little thicker. Girls are usually drawn with thinner necks in the anime style.
-Bring the shoulders in a little more. The arms do appear slightly off alignment with the rest of the body. Either that, or if you're going for a more muscular look, you can try making the chest wider and making his stomach area thinner, as well as thicken his arms. Basically, more bulk in the far upper body.
-If the shirt isn't meant to be tucked in, you may want to make the bottom of the shirt hang down a little bit lower, perhaps halfway between the crotch and waistline. Otherwise, he looks kinda weird, as though he's trying to expose his belly, and most guys do not swing that way.
-The face looks good and overall seems well in proportion with the rest of his figure, except maybe his shoulders. Try making the outline of his face a little thinner so it doesn't seem like he has overly long sideburns...but if that's the look you're going for, awesome!
Overall, there are a variety of styles you can use for this guy or any male specimen, and it seems you picked a winner. As far as looks go...hey, as long as the proportions are pretty close to correct, the rest of the design can be left to your imagination. There are also a variety of anime style drawing books you could get at comic stores...although I don't know too many right now. Overall, keep improving, and good luck! _________________ I know the guy who lives next to me. The arms are not seperated from the body in real life, you need to make his arms against his body, make him look relaxed. If you get what I mean that's good cause I'm confusing myself too! |

Thanks for all the replies! (I used to barely get any... >x<) I changed the eyes, but realized that they look a little... retarded (Sorry for the inappropriate word, ladies *Ahem*) so I'm going to work on it during school tomorrow. I think I'll make him look relaxed, like you said with his arms, and for his shirt; I was going for a "tight" muscle shirt kinda thing, except he's not very muscular >>;. As I go along, I'll add a jacket, some more accessories, and I've added a very premature form of pants and legs. Got to go, its real late and my dad might come out. See ya.
P.S. A square chin? Gotcha. |
