Whoa, hold up. I am about to hijack the thread and steer it into a realm of biology, but I promise to bring it back.
I tried to look up "parthogenesis," but I found nothing. The closest things I found dealt with the course in which a disease runs, which is known as "pathogenesis." I wish I was better with Greek and Latin roots...
Planty, I think what you are referring to is mitosis, or the process in which somatic cells copy their genetic material and divide into identical daughter cells, barring mutations.
From what I gathered from the summary of Stream 32, the way that ShadeMan reproduced his set of navis is probably a modified form of cloning, and not full mitosis. If the latter case were true, then ShadeMan would have to get his "parent navis," and they would fission off of each other to keep the population of navis growing at an exponential rate.
What would be more plausible is if he just outright cloned them. It takes a small scrap of data, and with the right instructions and sufficient resources, theoretically one can make an unbounded amount of them.
I hope that was enough to steer it back on track... _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! But they'll have to avoid the Whammy, as they play the most exciting game of their lives! From Television City in Hollywood! It's time to 'Press Your Luck!'--Rod Roddy

That's what I was talking about. Parthogenesis. Which is just a little bit like the biological version of Athena springing fully-formed from Zeus' brow... _________________ I win because I love my enemies. Do you love your enemies? |
