When you first saw Lan

Note: Before I post this topic, I want to mention that I'll probably be posting other topics like this about other characters in the future, but if I do, it won't be on a frequent basis. I know seeing too much of the same thing can be frustrating and this is the only survey topic that I plan on posting for the time being.

I've got some Lan questions I'd like to drill y'all on.

How did you react when you first saw Lan:
1. For the first time?
2. Speak?
3. Stop the Subway in the second first season episode?
4. Have trouble with homework and/or be late for school?
5. React over Rush winning the race?
6. Compete in the N1 Grand Prix?
7. Cross-fuse with Mega Man?
8. Refuse to use a dark chip on Mega Man when Mega Man was in a dangerous situation? (I forget which episode it was, but I know the episode was from this season and has been dubbed)
9. With no shirt?
10. Jump into a hot spring that was too hot in a Japanese episode?
11. Narrate part of the cat episode?
12. With his headband off?

Well, while I think some of those questions are a little too pointless and obscure to get any answers out of (who cares what anyone thinks about Lan's expression when Rush won the race?) at least this has WAY more content than your average "What's your favourite" survey topics. I'll actually participate somewhat.

1. Saw Lan? When I first saw Lan my thoughts were not focused on him so much as the role he represented. He was Megaman's little-kid partner. His owner/trainer what have you. It was one of the signs Capcom was hopping on the Pokemon bandwagon. I was probably less enraged about it than some MM fans, but I remember being a little uneasy about it. Of course the first I saw of him was his main BN1 official art where he's leaping with an ecstatic look on his face, pointing his rollerblades forward as if to emphasize their presence and remind us of what kind of kid he is.

2. Heard speak? No real striking opinions upon hearing Lan speak that I can remember. At the time my mind was probably more focused on how awesome it was to see EXE animated. This would have been just a few days or weeks after the first episode of the anime aired and long before REO somebody was kind enough to supply info and downloads for it. I believe it was at Red Draco's forum that I downloaded it. It was a +20 hour download and I didn't bother coming back for episode 2 or beyond. I was satisfied enough with just the premier. And as some of you can guess, the part I liked best of the whole episode was Skullman Bone Stalkering the screen in the opening credits.

3. Subway stop? I found it amusing they printed "2 inches" on the screen to drive the point home. Yeah I chuckled a bit, that's it.

4. stupid and lazy? Just rather predictable character traits for your average Pokemon Trainer knockoff.

5. Rush? I already snarked at this question at the beginning.

6. N1? Just a rather predictable plot development for your average Pokemon Trainer knockoff.

7. CF? Like about 95% of EXE fans, I was thinking "They stole my idea!"

8. No DarkChip? Haven't seen it yet. (!) Although I like to spoil myself and have read enough summaries to know what you're talking about, and I wasn't to surprised about it.

9. Topless? Um...what sort of opinions are you digging for here?

10. Hotspring? Saw the clips. Fairly predictable attempt at humour I thought.

11. Narrating? They needed exposition and they didn't have a regular narrator. Seemed like an obvious course of action to me.

12. Headbandless? What, was I supposed to be surprised they'd show an animated character in anything but the same clothes it wears day in and day out forever?...because I was. The first time I saw him without a headband was in BN1 though, and all that struck me there is that the graphics people went to the extra trouble to make sprites for isolated and unneccessary one-shot instances within the game. A practice which is dying in the more recent BN games since they'd rather fill out their sprite space with more and more recolours of existing sprites instead.

I thought Lan gave a funny reaction. That's why I used that question.

My answers:
1. I took a liking to the character. I saw him as a cool protagonist with a cool personality who was a well-created character.
2. Cool voice. A good reflection of what the character is like.
3. Thought he was the man and I thought that was one of his best moments.
4. Cracks me up.
5. I felt ripped off with the way the end of the episode resulted, but I thought Lan's reaction was classic.
6. Cool concept although not that original.
7. Very cool concept and was a great idea for the series.
8. That was an awesome scene. Excellent writing and really shows how cool a character Lan is and how much respect he has for Mega Man.
9. Didn't think much of it.
10. Cracked up. Very funny moment.
11. Thought that was an awesome scene. They should have him narrate more often.
12. Didn't recognize him. Thought he was a different character at first.

Meh, why not?

1. I honestly thought his name was 'Lance Montgomery', which I found to be a stupid name. I wasn't quite to sure how much I'd enjoy him as a character since he griped a lot in the first episode, and I hate griping (which makes me an unintentional hypocrite at times, sadly...). But over time, he won me over.
2. So that's what he sounds like. (I didn't really care about VA's at that point)
3. "Wow, that was close."
4. I laugh over his school problems, probably because they stem from a hint of laziness.
5. ... I was too angered over Rush winning to have a reaction to Lan's reaction. That ending felt like a severe cop-out.
6. Now that's surprising (/sarcasm). He loves to Netbattle, why wouldn't he?
7. I liked the idea... for about the first ten episodes.
8. He's the hero. He'd never give MegaMan a Dark Chip. -shrug- (Didn't know about the game at that point.)
9. Uh, why's it matter? I didn't think anything when I saw it. He was at the Hot Springs, why wouldn't he take off his shirt?
10. Ain't seen it.
11. He should narrate more often, it gives the Anime a better feel.

11. Narrate part of the cat episode? I don't think I ever stopped laughing that ep
12. With his headband off? YAY! I love it when his headband is off.

1. After being introduced again to megaman about the begining of 2000 I saw this title coming a long way away. I didn't get the ACTUAL game until much later. I saw the first episode on Red Dracko's forums But through something else. I was really estatic. I'm sure I was a part of the forums at that time. I knew nothing about Enzan at the time.

2. Typical voice, I guess...I twas my first Subtitled anime...introduced a wide window to me.

3. Uh.....yay?

4. heh heh....familiar...

6. I'll be rooting from the side I guess...

12. Well...if you wear a headband to much, I guess your hair gets stuck that way...

-I took more note of Blues's reaction... Guy tries to be humble and honest, and it turns out he's wrong. XD I don't even remember Netto's.

-Somehow I just know he's going to win through some miracle(you can imagine how surprised I was when he didn't)
7. Cross-fuse with Mega Man?
-GO GO POWER RANGERS!!

-Would a Dark Chip really help at all anyway? ...

-Can't say I remember this. but I will say this: Seeing him dressed as Aki, it took me a minute to realize who he was(I was like "who is that chick?).

-Don't remember it.

-I don't remember this happening either.

-I believe my exact reaction was "It's not permenantly attached??" ...

I saw for the first time in one of WPP subbed episodes. I thought he was okay. I like the hyper-activeness he often displays.
Speak?
I really like his Japanese voice, but his English va is one of my least favorites.
Stop the Subway in the second first season episode?
I barely remember that episode, actually. ^^;;
Have trouble with homework and/or be late for school?
Typical kid...all that netbattling occupies the time he should be spending on more important things.
React over Rush winning the race?
I was glad, but only because of Blues' priceless reaction afterwards.
Compete in the N1 Grand Prix?
The Grand Prix had it's moments, but I also got bored with it at times. At least the battle Between Netto and Enzan was great.
Cross-fuse with Mega Man?
It's interesting provided they don't keep using it for several episodes in a row (they should have Rockman fight solo sometimes as well).
Refuse to use a dark chip on Mega Man when Mega Man was in a dangerous situation?
That was the episode where Neeldeman and Yuriko made their debute, and it was obvious that Netto would not resort to the chip since he knew it would hurt his navi.
With no shirt? Um...not much to say on that subject.
Jump into a hot spring that was too hot in a Japanese episode? First time it was funny, the second time I was wondering if he and Chiaso suffered from short term memory loss.
Narrate part of the cat episode? I didn't realize he narrated that.
With his headband off? He never brushes his hair apparantly. =P
