I've been having fun around the Japanese IME I downloaded recently, trying to write down the TV size OP and ED sequences of the Rockman EXE animes as they are shown.

Anyway, can anyone out there pronounce the kanjis in these pics?

Yes, I know that there are kanas written above the kanji, but they're just too small for me to make out

By that, I mean if you see ロックマン you would pronouce it as 'rockman', 光 as 'hikari', 闇 as 'yami', etc

Oh, and for the second picture, I know that the bottom says '[spoil:8841c8abe4]Program of Light and Dark[/spoil:8841c8abe4]', but I can't make the kanji they use for 'program' appear. I've been looking for Japanese translations of the word, but all I come up with is its kana - プログラム

The first pic's furigana seems easy enough to make out on my end.

Jaaku na Dennouseimeitai

Nebula Grey Shidou.

The second pic's too blurred though. I wouldn't think they's HAVE any kanji for "program". That's definitely a borrowed word. Must be a pun or something that just sounds like Program.

But there should be an actual Japanese word which means 'program', right?

As far as I understand it kanji's pretty antiquated. Somehow I doubt any new kanjis have been invented for the computer age.

On more than one occasion, I've seen kanji used that isn't pronounced the same but means a similar thing and used for that anyways. In other words, they pronounce it プログラム but are writing some other kanji that mean something similar just to be fancy.

And while no new kanji characters have been invented, there have been new combinations of old kanji characters to mean something new, e.g. dennou (電脳) from the kanji for "electric" and "brain".

After some searching, I think I've found the Kanji in the one picture: 遺産

If I'm right, the usual meaning is inheritance.

This is a really random question but it has to do with Japanese and the Computer age. How does a Japanese keyboard work? In order to type in Japanese wouldn't you need tons of keys? Or is their written language not as complicated as it looks?

They probably use keyboards similar to ours, but I'm not sure how they input text. They most likely type it in Romanji and use IME or something, which automatically translates it for them.

Their keyboards are shaped like ours, but have Japanese kana on them instead.

Really i thought there was too much kana to fit it all on a keyboard. And if they learn how to romanize it wouldn't that be the fourth written language they have to learn? If they do that then I as an American feel quite inferior.

Uh, there aren't too many katakana characters. A lot of them are other kana with daku-ten and han-daku-ten, which are the two lines and the small circle added to the top-right of the characters. They have both of those as keys.

Yeah, there are a lot of Japanese characters, but there are a lot of Roman characters too. For instance, there are only 26 letter characters on your keyboard, but there are actually 52 letters we use on a regular basis. That's what the Shift key is for. There are also alt key codes. Like by pressing Alt+222 I can get the "Þ" character. So really on any keyboard you have access to many more symbols that are actually shown. So the Japanese keyboard doesn't have to be THAT much larger than ours.

Actually, there are two types of keyboard input methods in Japanese. (Most programs default to the first method, except silly Microsoft Office which defaults to the second but allows you to select the first.)

The first kind uses a keyboard identical to an American one, with Roman letters on it. Hiragana is just phonetic, and hit Enter/Return after you're done. (a i u e o ka ki ku ke ko etc.) Then, for kanji, just hit space to bring up a list of every possibility and choose from that. (No choice automatically gives you the most commonly used choice from the list, making it easier much of the time.) For katakana, you can manually specify it with about 2 mouse clicks before you begin typing the word, or hit space after typing it and it'll be in the list with the kanji.

Second method seems to assign a kana to every key or something along the lines of what the others said, but I have yet figure out how to type anything except あいうえお using that method.
