I've always been a DBZ fan, personally. For me, it's always been the characters that have drawn me in. For instance, Vegeta fits the archtype of villain-turned-hero, but with a twist: he never completely converts to the "good side." There are always hints or shadows that, yeah, he's evil, and probably always will be. Plus he's not the annoying guy whining about the crimes he's commited and wanting atonement, which is a plus. Also, the fight scenes can be quite amazing, when they don't last for ten episodes at a time.
But like most people are saying, that's just me. Like any other television series or movie, everyone has their own personal taste. If someone chooses not to like something because it's popular or mainstream, then they have issues extending far beyond personal preference of anime. ;P I'm not a huge fan of One Piece, but I know plenty of people who love it. What the hell gives me the right to get on their case because it's becoming (semi) popular on Fox Box?
I like DBZ, and Digimon, and Naruto, and I'll be damned if I have some anime snob look down on me because of it.
