Ah, well I wouldn't know anything about said lake. When I saw her english name was 'Sal' and she has Woodman as her NAVI, I assumed the name was a pun on 'salad', which is composed of veggies, plants, wood, you get it. Can't really blame me for thinking that. Also, Tachyon, I think that ken can mean either sword or fist. 'Shoryuken' for instance is a punching technique, plus 'Ryu' can also be used as a word for sword, and dragon as well. Please remember folks, that unlike the EXE sisters and the PMM staffers I don't take Japanese, I only know a few words and a few translations of specific things. Also, that 'list' I made for him up top was made very quickly, and was mostly made from things I remembered from the previous thread as Izumi mentioned.

Hey, never said the English name can be a new pun Razz I think you're right about the "Salad" pun for the English name but not the Japanese one, I mean, look at Fyrefox Razz, Sometimes I wish I as incharge of translating, I want to change Masa's name to "Duff McShark"

On the other thread, you made a lot of good connections with the translated names. Which is why I wanted to see your list.

I don't think Hinoken has a real "meaning" other than being a pun on his own name, (kinda like how I think he's using Match as a nickname in the english translation)

Aright aright, lemme try again then :3

Japanese names:
Netto- Net
Saito- Site
Meiru- E-mail
Dekao- Index
Yai- Based after MML character.
Enzan- 'En' means Burning
Tohru- 'toh' is an acronym for things associated with Ice. Other ice-themed anime characters have it as well, like Tohron and Touya.
Midorikawa Kero- 'Midorikawa' means green pond and 'kero' is the japanese term for ribbit.
Meijin- Famous person
Raoul- the first symbol 'ra' migth be associated with 'Rai' which means thunder.
Daisuke Hayami- 'Hayaku' means Quickly.
Pride- Pride
Laika- Based on a Russian instrument as they've said.
Charlie Airstar- American jokes and stuff, you get it >>
Dingo- Dingo
Jasmine- Jasmine
Barrel- Name possibly based after MML character.
Shuko- Name possibly based after MML character.
Elec Hakushaku- Elec after his NAVI, and 'Hakushaku' means Count.
Hinoken- "fist of fire" or "sword of fire"
Mahajorama- Based after Mahajorama Yema, judge of death in indian Mythology, known as Emperor Enma in Japanese mythology.
Arashi Kazefuji- 'Arashi' means storm, and 'Kaze' means wind.
Magnets Gauss- Magnets >>
Mariko- Based on her haircut style if I'm not mistaken.
Regal- royalty
Inukai- I'm a little skechy on this one, but I THINK it translates to 'Dog world'.
Sunayama- the 'suna' in his name means Sand.
Saiko Rei- I'm SURE this one is wrong, but I percieve it as 'Psycho Ray', it sorta makes sense if you think about it.
Narcy Viddy- Already explained. And yes, the Viddy in the english version is actually a direct translation of 'hide' because it IS actualy the same thing. Why?

The katakanas and hiraganas (I think) are similiar for the ones that begin wtih 'h' 'p' and 'b', and symbols such as those are made to look similar due to them sounding similiar. For those of you who take other languages, words that start with 'v' are pronounced like a 'b'. And the b can also be said like an 'h'. Another example of this is Nihon/Nippon, for Japan.

English names:
Lan- Local Area Connection
Hub- Hub
Sal- Salad
Yai- shortened from Yaito.
Eugene Chaud- Eugene is an Americanized version of 'Ijuin' and Chaud is a french word for 'hot'.
Tori Froid- Tori is an Americanized version of 'Tohru' and Froid is a french word for 'cold'.
Higsby- Americanized 'Higure'
Miyu- shortened from Miyuki.
Mr. Famous- direct translation.
Dave Speedy- Dave is an Americanized version of 'Daisuke' and Speedy is a direct translation of his last name sort of...
Raika- l and r are the same thing in Japanese, or at least sound the same.
Count Zap- Zap, which is a little more unique than 'Elec' in my opinion. The count part is translated from "hakushaku".
Mr. Match- Lighting a match.
Yahoot- No clue o_O
Maddy- It's actually the same thing as 'Madoi', but they pronounced it a little differently. It's after "Mad" which is sort of better described by Color's name change of "Whackoman".

The ones I missed, I have no clue.

This was mentioned before, but no, Hide is not the same as Viddy. Just because the only different between Hi and Bi in kana is a pair of notches in the upper right does not mean they're identical. If they wanted his name to sound like "Viddy" in the Japanese version, they would have used those notches, but they didn't, so it's Hide.

And I'm fairly sure his real name was Yamashita, not Yamada. It was Yamashita in BN4 and I heard Yamashita when Sunayama called him that in the anime.

As Kymera DS and Drk would say after making a giant list "I'm no expert on nihongo, but I couldn't be more Japanese" The kanji can be misread I guess, Heats Mcman told me Yamada.

It's interesting to point out that the Lan/Hub pun works better than the Netto/Saito pun. Why?

You can build a network without an ethernet hub or similar device (like ring networks and mesh networks). Taking out websites (and similar ways to share information) from the 'Net, however, would eliminate a massive chunk of the Internet's functionality.

It doesn't , but atleast he didn't list the 50 top reasons and give small discriptions followed by a pat on the back Razz

They're the same pun in my eyes.

I think he's suggesting Lan and Hub work better because the words as computer terms are separate and independent of one another while Net and Site are one thing made of the other. A pretty strange opinion on the merits of a good pair of name puns, but whatever floats your boat.

It's a music term. It means to play loudly. The word itself is latin for "strong", and written music traditionally uses that word, as well as various other latin words and phrases to indicate how music is to be played at a given point.

Some English names have kept their meanings, like Mayl is still mail. But I wonder where they got "Maylu" from, or even what it means. Maybe it's an Americanized version of saying "Meiru?"

Meijin and Famous both mean pretty much the same thing, so, yeah.

According to Izumi, the conventional Kana spelling for the english word "Mail" is actually "Meeru". So "Meiru" (pronounced exactly the same) is an intentional misspelling of the word to prevent confusion, which is exactly what "Mayl" is to "Mail". I really like how that equivalency worked out. Now THAT'S translation. As for Maylu, they couldn't just rely on different spelling in the anime since the names are spoken, so they had to tack on the "u" to prvent confusing her name with "mail". Probably the same reason they mispronounce "Chaud" and "PET", though I really think the confusion could be easily avoided in context...

CHaud is a french word pronounced "Sho" and PET isn't an acronym

PET becoming an acronym is for the same reason they changed Plug in to Jack in though.

Local Area NETWORK! >_< *sigh* sorry, it was late for me.

Eh, I've always pronounced PET as an abbreviation. Also, you're probably right Rai about the Viddy thing, but you gotta admit that my theory makes SOME sense. Character names can be translated wierdly depending on the situation.

Don Kreig- Don Creek
Valon- Varon
Rild- Rirudo

Yanno, stuff like that. Oh and missed a few:

Ivan Chillski- I think that Ivan is also a Russian name, and like Raika, he's from Sharo. And the Chillski part is a few ice puns to go with Coldman.
Terry Jomon- Terry is an Americanized version of "Terou" and Jomon is the name of the company he's from.

Nazne wrote:

Because Lan can do without Hub. Hub is dead, and that's that. Much more practical.

I suppose that from the Japanese perspective, Netto/Saito would work better, since the 'Net is nothing without the website. Much more poetic.

I don't think they explicitly thought about the finer details of it, but I do believe culture played a role. If you look carefully, it's not hard to find similar subtle cultural differences.

Besides, when all's said and done, the main point of my last post was the *coughnetworkcough* part. I just needed something to fill up the post so I wouldn't get scolded for spamming.

Hinoken- "fist of fire" or "sword of fire"

Shall I help with this one? :]

Actually, when you space it out like below,
"Hi no Ken"
It would mean "Ken of Fire". :V But that's just me. Sad
